Agreed! I also think Rotsey's guitar work is under-rated too (eg Bus to Bondi etc). And Andrew James bass lines from the first two albums. Giffo's radical use of fretless basses. One day people will start to see their individual brilliance.
I dunno about that. The Oils were/are one of the greatest live acts around. They've had more than one night at the top. This was a great example, but by no means the only one.
agreed 1000% not only is he brilliant on drums, his high range vocals are sensational......that's why the oils are so loved............great song wrighting and they can all sing.............
One of the best live performances by the mighty Oils!!Love the magnificent guitar work by Jim Moginie,Martin Rotzy,& Peter Gifford, & the great work of Rob Hirst.
How great is this song, and the whole concert for that matter? I mean, it is just stupendous. The guitar tones,, the vocals, the rhythm section, everything. Even the lighting and overall atmosphere is breathtaking.
"Overall", you say? The pink one which one of the brass guys is wearing during this show, right? 😄😉 Seriously, though: This is truly amazing stuff indeed, as is the rest of this show 🤩 Even that massive ship travels past just at the right moment! 😃
At 17 Rob had every beat of my heart - he was fit - in every way. Decades on I'm in awe of Jim's song writing gift, for without him the soundtrack to a large chunk of my life would not exist. Ta Mr Moginie.
I was 12 years old when the Oils played this gig. Australia was truly a great country to be in. Fast forward to 2020 & I often find myself in tears knowing that the Australia I grew up in & loved, no longer exists. Thank you Midnight Oil for making Australia in the 80s such a special time and place.
How many groups can you name with this much individual talent? Rob Hirst, as an example, is surely one of the greatest singing/ song-writing drummers ever. Lucky (little) crowd... I'd have given both eye teeth to be on Goat Island for this. My brothers and I watched it at home in Brisbane as a live telecast.
Bought it in '85 for 2 songs that got airplay here in California, turned out, as I listened to the whole album - it was fantastic! I listened to it today 31 years later, it's still a beautiful masterpiece
Absolutely!! It often gets overlooked for both earlier albums like 10 to 1 and later albums like Diesel and Dust, but it was Red Sails that seemed to have both the art rock of their earlier years, with the folk rock of their later years, with a good dose of eccentricity, yet so tight. It's just so haunting.
To me, this was always their best lineup. And this concert was one of their greatest. When you are doing songs in concert that actually sound better than the album recordings, as they did many times on Goat Island, you know you've transitioned as a band to something truly remarkable. These five guys were something special; great musicians with incredible stage presence. One of the greatest musical acts this country has ever produced.
no end to the hostility damn it still rings out shame on you who went out jan 6th 2021 thanks peter and the band for great music in my youth I still dance with you guys
Damn thats tight. compare to just a few years before at beach in Sydney where they were rough and raw. The players, all of them are razor sharp and the arrangement gives everyone their part to shine including, excellent bass touch. This whole concert was just perfect.
The dancing lesson starts at 2:48 Y'all thank me later :-) God I love that man, reminds me so much of another great man from my country (Canada) : Gordon Downie
Washing dishes right now has never been so much fun!! pumping up the music and seriously you guys absolutely rock!!! I’m looking forward to doing a one off reunion gig or two !!!!!♥️😀😀🎶🎶🎶🎶
saw them last Sun then again tomorrow.. men at work on 21st . Australian Rock punch well above its size. Very privileged to grown up with these fantastic musicians and human beings. rockers with a sense of real justice and compassion.. was driving back on a high from Manchester..
The first concert I ever went to was Midnight Oil with UB40 and Burning Spear at Red Rocks in 1985. It was incredible. The album this was on was released in 1984, so a lot of their set was songs from it.
Thanks Peter & the Entire Gang, I had no idea who Kosciuszko was... Tadeusz Kosciuszko was a skilled engineer with a military education by the time he arrived in the American colonies from Poland in 1776. Offering his services to the revolutionary cause, he masterminded a key British defeat at Saratoga and oversaw the building of military fortifications at West Point. At war’s end, he returned to Poland and led a valiant but ultimately unsuccessful uprising against the nation’s partition by Russia and other foreign powers. After several years of imprisonment in Russia, Kosciuszko returned to the United States, where he was welcomed as a hero and counted Thomas Jefferson among his close friends. With Poland still under foreign control throughout the rest of his life, Kosciuszko never returned to his native land, and died in exile in Switzerland in 1817.
Yeah well that one that looked like it had a couple of buses in it was full of Holden Monaroes, Commodores and EH Wagons! Brand new and ready to sell in Sydney's car show rooms. Wow I wish I had a time machine.
Funny how Jim and Martin are listed as "guitar" but really mostly Jim does more lead and Martin sort of does Rhythm guitar but they also have many lead bits back and forth and unique like this sort of duelling guitars. Also you listen to Cliffords bass even in this song where he textures the notes and does little runs varying the volume; hes just that good and makes the melody so much better, HUGE asset...
The masterful Jim Moginie quietly weaves his magic into every song heard. Possibly one of the most under rated musician in Australia
Agreed! I also think Rotsey's guitar work is under-rated too (eg Bus to Bondi etc). And Andrew James bass lines from the first two albums. Giffo's radical use of fretless basses. One day people will start to see their individual brilliance.
Agreed!
@@dolphinberserk Martin Rotsey sigh…….
What a band! So tight yet so musical.
The quiet genius.
Keith Richards said that on any given night any band is the greatest in the world. This was Midnight oils turn.
Yeah it was!
Awesome guitarests
What a brilliant concept. I saw Outline in Sydney in 1980 and on that night they were the best band in the world.
I dunno about that. The Oils were/are one of the greatest live acts around. They've had more than one night at the top. This was a great example, but by no means the only one.
@@Taurencowpew - I just saw them at the Palais in Melbourne and they were amazing, legendary .....
They were The Oils.
Ten points to Rob Hirst : perfect vocals, bashing out on the drums, and keeps a serene smile on his face
xiphocostal genuinely nice bloke too
How good is he
Bloody oath. All of those fellers were and are absolutely integral to Midnight Oil. R.I.P. Bones.
God of drums.
AWESOME DRUMMER!
This is definitely the BEST version of Kosciusko EVER...
Have to agree m8, I was pleasantly surprised... It tops the LP one. Never seen this footage before. Must have been awesome to be there.
Couldn’t agree more! Giffo is massive!
With out a doubt, never gets old
Wish they still did this arrangement of it live rather than the half acoustic version they do now.
Chris Campbell I can confirm it was the f#n best concert I have ever been to this point in my life still. I was 12 at the time. Love the oils
that performance still stands up more than 35 years later - amazing
Best ever probably
Brilliant performance by the quintessential Australian band!!
If someone watches this and doesn’t think this is one the greatest live bands they’ve ever seen then they don’t know shit about anything.
@Sean Bayley it’s hard to argue against that. I’d say of all the live shows I saw the records definitely paled in comparison
here here
Giffo ! Australia's most underrated bassist/musician !!!!
Rob Hirst demonstrates he is a Triple Threat: passionate drummer, vocalist and fashion maven. . . Respect sir!
oftenlucid legendary
agreed 1000% not only is he brilliant on drums, his high range vocals are sensational......that's why the oils are so loved............great song wrighting and they can all sing.............
Rob Hirst the drummers drummer nuff said :)
The whole band was tight. Martin is absolute beast on the guitars.
Rob told me that his biggest regret of that gig was the pink overalls 🤣
that is how a band should sound live, clean and tight, great vocals, guitar, bass and drums. classic Aussie Pub Rock!!
Well said, @jay230836. I’d like to buy you a beer, Sir.

Absolutely agree!
I'm still pissed off at my parents for not letting me go to this concert. Me being only 9 months old at the time is no excuse. I would've loved it!
😂

Rob Hirst is flawless here on lead vocals and drums!
Red Sails - what an incredible album!
The best Oils album.

Peter Gifford smashing a P bass through a SVT is a thing of beauty..
