The Oils are the most important band to come out of Australia. Incredible musicians and the tightness of the band is incredible. Absolutely amazing live. They sang about issues in Australia and the world that are still relevant today. Great choice

The lead singer, Peter Garrett, has a long standing commitment to environmental issues and Aboriginal rights, and in 2007 was elected to federal parliament and became minister for Environment, Heritage and the Arts in the Labor government. He left parliament in 2013, and the band reunited for a couple more albums and a final world tour last year, which concluded by performing for numerous outback Aboriginal communities. Always passionate, but also every band member is outstandingly talented. More Oils please!👍👍
One of the best bands ever - every musician amazing and Pete Garrett phenomenal front man. And they were pretty wholesome healthy well educated boys. Definitely watch the whole “oils on the water “ concert from start to finish It’s my fave fave live concert I never get tired of watching

Rob Hurst ,is the drummer ,did you know ,they screw his drums to the stage ,because he hits them so hard. Without doubt the Best Australian band ever. They go at that pace for up to 2.5 hours .
It's so unusual to watch a southern belle watch this in 2023. A band that was so huge to me as a 10 year old. The music in the context of the time and place is difficult to explain.. Fantastic track 👍

I'm very very lucky to be an Australian who lived in the time of Midnight Oil - the best and rockest socio-political band Oz has ever produced. I saw them live 4 times, and every performance was like this - 100% dedicated. Also, Peter Garrett, lead singer is probably twice as tall as Michael Stipe. 🤪
I only got to see them once, performing at Womad with Peter Gabriel. They had an amazing set, and even performed a didgeridoo solo that was so loud and deep that you could feel the sound waves rippling your skin😄 Such a great high energy band. Thanks for sharing!!!

Just discovered your channel and loved watching your reaction. That’s one of the beautiful things about music: the joy of “discovering” amazing music that’s 40 years old! The video from their “Oils on Water” gig is some of the best concert footage I have EVER seen! I “discovered” these guys when a show in Toronto called “The New Music” covered them in 1983, following the release of their “10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1” album. While they are revered in Australia, I don’t think they got the recognition they deserved from the rest of the world. One of the great rock and roll bands and Blue Sky Mining is one of THE greatest guitar rock albums EVER!
Bassist is Peter Gifford, drummer is Rob Hurst, Peter left quite some years ago and bones hillman took over for Peter, they are one of the best Australian bands to make it big.

So glad to see what a great time you had watching The Oils. I feel sorry for people who didn't grow up with their music. No, not a jam band. They were very edgy, especially in their earlier days. Too punk to be rock n roll. Too rock n roll to be punk. Too Midnight Oil to be categorized. Check out their early stuff. My favorite three Oils albums are Head Injuries (which Stand in Line is on), Place Without a Postcard, and 10, 9, 8, ... Got a bit commercial for me after that. But it's the following albums, Red Sails, Diesel and Dust, Blue Sky Mining, that were their most popular in the mainstream. I urge you to check out more of their music.
Not only do the Oils rock, no other band as been as commercially successful in writing songs about social, environmental and political issues. The lead singer, Peter Garrett, is a true modern Renaissance figure, he is a lawyer, activist, musician and politician (he was elected to the Australian Parliament and became a government minister (for the environment, then education), the equivalent of a secretary of those portfolios in a US administration, the only difference is that, in Australia, those holding such positions in cabinet are elected politicians and not presidential appointees, so they don't have to be ratified by the Senate). Garrett has received awards from the French government and the World Wide Fund For Nature.
Every band in those days were jam bands. That's just a natural occurrence when you are playing live shows together for years and have to be tight as hell to survive a very competitive bar scene. Back then, bands were primarily discovered by record companies showing up at live shows. These bands earned their chops.
the difference between the live version and the recorded version is quite remarkable, the live version is a whole different beast. Midnight Oil's music boasts originality that few bands .can match.
Probably the most exciting band ever to come out of Oz. Exciting and a serious message could well have been the mission statement if they were one of those looting corporations that we have too many of here.
The random bloke is just someone from the crowd who got on stage and started dancing with the lead singer. Back in Oz, in the early 80's it was still very laid back. He wasn't bothering anyone, the band was sweet so he stayed on stage. Never happen nowadays.
Make sure you go see the new doko out in a few weeks/months worldwide - Midnight Oil: The hardest line - just premiered to sell outs at the Sydney Film Festival - in fact it opened the 2-week festival!
Must be time for another Midnight Oil song? ;) If you want something calmer then try One Country or Bedlam Bridge or upbeat then Forgotten Years or My Country.
The lead singer Peter Garret's highly energetic performance is not due to substance abuse or alcohol as he is a teeotaling christian, but I suspect he may have consumed a lot of the holy spirit!
A thing that you can assume with a Midnight Oil song is that it will probably have political commentary / content in it, varying in scale between global and local to Australia. The band "broke through" to a broader audience in about 1982 with the (fabulous) 10-to-1 album which featured Power and the Passion as a big radio hit. John and Jimmy actually do a duet together called “when something is wrong with my baby”. They sing this live on a show that was called hey hey it’s Saturday so you will need to search for “John Farnham and Jimmy barnes hey hey it’s Saturday singing something is wrong with my baby” Jimmy also sings duet with another great band called INXS. They sing “good times” John has sung with Olivia newton John (RIP) tom jones and ray charles and many others Jimmy also sings a great cover of “knocking on heavens door” with other aussie legends And he also sings cover of when a man loves a woman Jimmy as lead singer of cold chisel sings “wild thing” Both John and Jimmy have alot of catalogues of songs to react to but probably start with something is wrong with my baby John also sings a legendary performance of Beatles song help which will blow your mind Other reactors have said John and Jimmy are best singers they have heard of and are surprised they didn’t crack the US market. Strongly agree. Not a huge Chisel fan growing up in the 80's, but Bow River LIVE really is something ! I do think Forever Now is one of the great Australian songs though. Mossy's guitaring, Barnes' incredible vocals, beautifully written by the drummer. Pity the clip on YT is in such poor quality.

Three of them were Head Injuries, Place Without a Postcard, and 10, 9, 8 ... I know exactly where each of them are. One is usually in the CD player in the car.

Every band in those days were jam bands. That's just a natural occurrence when you are playing live shows together for years and have to be tight as hell to survive a very competitive bar scene. Back then, bands were primarily discovered by record companies showing up at live shows. These bands earned their chops.

the difference between the live version and the recorded version is quite remarkable, the live version is a whole different beast. Midnight Oil's music boasts originality that few bands .can match.
Probably the most exciting band ever to come out of Oz. Exciting and a serious message could well have been the mission statement if they were one of those looting corporations that we have too many of here.
Not a "jam band"... for how intense this song is live, it's very very close to the original album recording.

The random bloke is just someone from the crowd who got on stage and started dancing with the lead singer. Back in Oz, in the early 80's it was still very laid back. He wasn't bothering anyone, the band was sweet so he stayed on stage. Never happen nowadays.

The lead singer Peter Garret's highly energetic performance is not due to substance abuse or alcohol as he is a teeotaling christian, but I suspect he may have consumed a lot of the holy spirit!

A thing that you can assume with a Midnight Oil song is that it will probably have political commentary / content in it, varying in scale between global and local to Australia. The band "broke through" to a broader audience in about 1982 with the (fabulous) 10-to-1 album which featured Power and the Passion as a big radio hit. Incidentally, Peter Garrett (the rather arresting lead singer) was elected to the Australian House of Representatives and served as Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts, & Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth.
Serious brains in that band and it sounds like heart as well.

They sing this live on a show that was called hey hey it’s Saturday so you will need to search for
“John Farnham and Jimmy barnes hey hey it’s Saturday singing something is wrong with my baby”
Jimmy also sings duet with another great band called INXS. They sing “good times”
John has sung with Olivia newton John (RIP) tom jones and ray charles and many others
Jimmy also sings a great cover of “knocking on heavens door” with other aussie legends
And he also sings cover of when a man loves a woman
Jimmy as lead singer of cold chisel sings “wild thing”
Both John and Jimmy have alot of catalogues of songs to react to but probably start with something is wrong with my baby
John also sings a legendary performance of Beatles song help which will blow your mind
Other reactors have said John and Jimmy are best singers they have heard of and are surprised they didn’t crack the US market. Cold chisel meet with music exec in US but was treated badly so they left US and came home an wrote one of their songs “you got nothing I want”
Cold chisel in Australia is considered the number one band by many people ahead of AC/DC and INXS so that just tells you how popular they were..Jimmy singing with Michael and rest of INXS band is fantastic and Michael seems in awe of jimmy’s

No, they weren't really a "jam band". When I saw them, they were always tight and rehearsed. Any jams would have been given a planned spot.

Also one of the best live bands you’ll ever see. That entire“Oils on the Water” gig that this track is taking from is legendary.

I do think Forever Now is one of the great Australian songs though.

I left Austalia 20 years ago, took ten CDs with me. Three of them were Head Injuries, Place Without a Postcard, and 10, 9, 8 ... I know exactly where each of them are. One is usually in the CD player in the car.
