I feel another Oils frenzy coming on. Every year or two I just go back and run through every album, single and concert to relive the power and unique talent represented in this awesome Aussie band. Hell, or I could just watch Peter Garrett dance all day and night. He's a totally unique character and watching him swing his super long spindly arms around is classic. Paint him blue and stick him on Pandora and we have Avatar.
How I miss the REAL Australia Still viewing in 2019 and Hirst's drum solo!!!! Excellent musicians. That playing is tight. Peter Garrett, always on top of things! He is awesome! Absolutely brilliant!!
Peter Garret , what a hypocrite , the lead singer of Midnight Oil , whose ideologies made him join the Green Party which he abandoned for The Labor Party & ended up in the Federal Government of Australia as Minister for the Environment . Where he was completely incompetant and his actions in the " Pink Batt fiasco " killed many young men which he never apologised, plus resulted in other disasters imposed upon the people of Australia. He did more harm than good . He should have stuck to being a Rock Star .
@@sondradupree8709 Rubbish, Rudd knew all about the insulation scheme fuckup because Garrett warned him it was unsafe in writing numerous times. Totally thrown under the bus. Why do you think he left when Rudd came back after the second ALP leadership spill?
Long before the far-right embedded the culture war into weak minds that made them overreact to anything vaguely political that didn't directly align with their agenda. Midnight Oil went nearly 40 years accepted as a strong voice for a moral message, now the brainworms have cooked people's heads from the inside and they'll shriek about how they're 'woke' and 'snowflakes'. Midnight Oil didn't change, the whiners did. And they'll yell at me now for this post.

So powerful! I had to watch some old Oils after watching The Hardest Line Its still so relevant. The power and the passion of the Oils... a beacon of hope and light. Cheers for the memories boys, you have inspired generations.
saw them on the same year (1985) in britanny - gueheno (france)..amazing gig so intense together with the clash...unforgettable (i was 21 and it seems like yesterday)
41 years ago I saw Midnight Oil at The Royal Antler Narrabeen. I have to thank the boys from The Strand house at Dee Why for taking me to the gig. It was late 1979, a warm night, people pouring jugs of iced water on each other and Peter Garrett's head, steam coming from the Lead Singer's bald cranium. Their music and especially their lyrics have made THE OILS one of the most important Rock bands in history. This new song ' Gadigal Land' is an instant Oils Classic. Words cannot describe how much I love this track. Sydney Radio station MMM played it every hour yesterday, so credit to them for that. Before they played it the first time I was thinking " oh, I hope it's good " I loved it from the opening chords, the thumping Drums, the throbbing Bass and Garrett's vocals delivering every word that is punching the Colonial invaders in the face. Well done boys, this is excellent!
This is just one of the most perfect things ever. The location, the time, the atmosphere, the sound, the lighting….it’s just all there. I’m 52 and seen so much music but coming back to this is really peeling back my recent cynicism. I play guitar , drums ,bass and keys since a little kid but can’t sing to save myself. Very broad musical tastes. This is such perfection It’s just enough to make me wanna cry.
This American has been an Oils fan since I first discovered them in my college days during the late 80s/early 90s. My biggest regret is I never saw them live. This helps a lot though.
THIS BAND HAD ME DISCOVER ROCK AND ROOL WHEN I WAS A CHILD...SO THINGS TO REMEBER SO PROUD OF THE OILS .. THE SONGS THE MESSAGE.. THE OILS FOR EVER THE BEST BAND FOR ME !!!
Forget about all the politics etc. for a moment. This is absolutely masterful Rock 'n' Roll and art. It's tight, intense, passionate, a little bit dangerous - you would have to search very hard to find an artistic performance as good as this.
For sure. I think people sometimes forget (because of the band's well-publicised politics) how brilliant and compelling they are musically. I have met a lot of musicians and most of them would give their souls for a chance to play in a band as musically devastating as this.
Peter dances like a member of the Aussie Parliament! Viva la oils! Another of my favourites! I dance that way too, but he makes it look cool lol! Frank.
seen them the first time in Melb at the "Ballrooms" in St Kilda...then new years eve on Gold coast(1981)...as always ...Hirst,s solo Ha he fkn smashed it......
What amazes me is that even in 1982 they had a fucking amazing back catalogue to play from and even if you agree with their political leanings or not: truly great band
Ummm... Have you ever heard it without the brass? Doesn't work nearly as well - they're going full-throttle already, and CAN'T kick it up for the ending, because there's no more to give. But with the brass: The original, album version had that horn part in the coda. And while you're entitled to your opinion, those big-band blasts at the end MAKE the song. Or at least I think so. Evidently the band did as well, since they went to the trouble of getting and rehearsing guys to play it.
Dare I say, one of the greatest live performances ever.
It's up there, especially for mid 80s
I watch tons of live stuff over many years. I agree with you
He is still kicking ass at live performances today. What a legend!
the best rock band in the world, the best singer, best dancing, BEST DRUMER, best bass man, UP THE OIL`S!!!!!

Jim and Martin are so good as a duo on guitar.
Rob Hirst's drum solo must be one of the best ever! Oils at the top of their game.
So so true after watching him at Newcastle last week. That corrugated drum he’s using shows how talented he his. Shame this could be their last tour😢
Ever heard of Sheila E?
This is one of the songs that taught me that drums and bass were not the least important.
The theatricality of Garrett and Hirst are what give the Oils their colour. The rest of the guys are still awesome in their own way, though.
Still the best fucking drum solo I've seen or heard. 30 years ago today!
You've clearly never heard moby dick live at the royal albert hall in 1970

Simply incredible. The most sweat-drenched performance of the most serpentine song by the mightiest band of them all. Behold the mighty Oils, in awe.
Just awesome...Their best line up (Gifford/Hirst especially). Real horns on stage instaed of keyboards changes everything.
Brilliant band, best we ever had and what a concert!
I wasted away on paradise.. Lived in sydney since 2009 till 2018..miss it everyday
Still one of my favourite bands of all time ...excellent Peter garrett brilliant front man to a band of superb musicians
