I was fortunate enough to see the Oils last week at Newcastle Entertainment Centre (23/2/22) on their farewell tour and it just blew me away how good they are. Almost 40 years since this concert and they still sound the same, absolutely amazing band!!!
Very cool, Andy! 🤩👍 I'd first heard their name that same year, but it would be another two years before I'd actually hear what they sound like, via 'Beds Are Burning'. It was only in January 2016 when I'd come across this awesome show here on YT (all in one single video, which now is no longer around).
I reckon there are several! 😊 Including 'Kosciusko', 'Short Memory', 'Read About It' and 'Best Of Both Worlds' (which in *my* book is the best show opener across YT) 🤩
@@nope-z5y - Yes, absolutely amazing! 😃 I love how Peter Garrett pretty much becomes a backing vocalist in 'Kosciuszko' and Rob the lead singer with Peter Gifford providing harmonies in the verses 😊
2:00 Rob forgets the backing vocals-the look he then gives the bass player/guitarist lol. Still the tightest most passionate band i ever saw. Aussie Legends.
@therealisation This was a HUGE Concert, it was 2JJ's tenth birthday and The Oils decided to give them a gift for giving them a break when the commercial stations didn't want them. The audience all got their tickets for free off the Radio. IIRC they asked all Oils fans to phone in and they were told to be at Circular quay or somewhere on a certain date. When they got there they were taken out to Goat Island, where the Band was waiting and ready to play. I remember watching it.
Listeners were invited to send a postcard to the radio station listing their three favourite acts. I put Midnight Oil first, I think one of my others was Brian Eno (I have diverse tastes), and I can't remember the other. Winners received a letter asking us to turn up at The Man-O-War steps on Circular Quay at a specific time. A small ferry came and picked us up. Once the ferry was underway the surprise was announced and passes and t-shirts were handed out. The event was supposed to be a surprise, but I had I pretty good idea of what was coming. It was going to be the radio station's (2JJ/2JJJ) tenth anniversary celebration, I'd seen in 'On The Street' that The Oils had been rehearsing but no shows had been announced. It didn't take a genius to put two and two together. I think there were about three hundred people in the audience, I've seen various estimates. The show was on a Sunday evening, and the broadcast the following Saturday evening. Actually a simulcast - on ABC televeision, and simultaneously in FM stereo on 2JJJ. Of course I got it on VHS, and also on reel-to-reel tape from the radio feed. Still have the reel.
It was ABC fm in Melbourne ,I recorded the concert on betahifi videtape back in the day,I recorded the audio from the fm broadcast, brilliant show and jj or jjj did a magnificent job,the audio stands up.
A stupendous track, from a phenomenal album. Just another incredibly talented band from an amazing era of Australian music. Red Sails is an incredible follow up album to the "10 to 1" masterpiece.
The 'Oils at their best! Before Garrett came to the realisation that to get anywhere in politics you have to conform to a major party, with that comes the selling out of your own views. Get the 'Oils back together Pete, and get out there and express your views to make people aware, you will achieve more than you did with the Labor party!
The Faceless men of the of labor party. Put they Peter to the sword and blamed him for all their shortfalls in their policies and their new implementations especially their roof insulation fiasco. I really think they used Peter to get votes at the start. I wished he was still in politics but cant blame him at the end for getting out. Who would want work for someone who wouldn't listen. Like renewable energy like solar the is better than filthy coal. ho cares about the future generations?
Need thus band more than any other time in their history to speak for the people coz you won’t be able to Read About It .... news is censored We don’t wanna be the ones to stand in line
@@nivioalves É que o primeiro trabalho deles que chegou com mais força ao Brasil foi o disco de 1987 "Diesel and Dust". Acho que esse disco é o mais famoso da banda no mundo inteiro. A música Sleep é de um disco anterior - Red Sails in the Sunset (1984). Eu tinha um em cassete cheio de ruído, de tanto regravar, o conteúdo desse LP mais antigo.
@Putin6655: just nothing to add... great fantastic song of a marvelloes australian band, that musicwise hasn't been beaten yet (my personal meaning). Thanks pet, thx midnight oil! thank you for having been there!
Looking for the live concert version from France,or maybe it's Canada? Dunno, but they show it on Rage every now & then. The best version i've heard imho.
Are the Oil's really coming BACK????? PINCH me, i've must have died and gone to heaven or somewhere!!!! thank god or whoever!!! there is NO aussie band better to see live than the Oil's in FULL FLIGHT!!!!!!!!
I rememember "Oil" with the old base player 461 years ago at "Macy's Bar" Melbourne - That Labour turncoat Garret described it as "Ita Buttrose's Bedroom" - ROB HIRST = AUSTRALIA'S GREATEST DRUMMER EVER - 2nd Favorite to me world wide - next to "Neil Peart" rob was the new "Keith Moon" : )

I watched this gig live as a 15 year old, loved it then & now

still the greatest bass player in one's life to witness. genius. then the horn section comes in and lifts the song higher. what a team.
Giffo is the best rock bass player Australia has turned out.
Chapman Stick God on this one......
This one just might very well be the highlight of this show, but it's just so hard to decide. What a magical concert.

for this gig alone, the trumpet player in pink is an australian legend
@therealisation - One of the Midnight Oil guys wears the same one in the clip to 'Read About It' :-))

I am 16 and I've loved midnight oil since I was 10. I am happy to know I am not he only person of my generation to love midnight oil.
Me to! Such a great song I'm only 15 as well. Glad to know I'm not the only one who listens to dubstep

Even better than the LP version; excellent, very Rundgren-esque modulations around 2:51-3:24
ADORO ESSA BANDA

I have put in a request for this to be the last song at the Hordern, so we can all just dissolve in tears.

I prefer this version to the album version actually funnily enough.

***** Yeah, a long time ago, but its name has since escaped me :p
It's a Chapman Stick.
Chapman stick its a touch bass really hard and technical to play which makes it even more impressive that he sings while playing it
@whitewolf15770 You need to have a better look. Ive got 10-1, Red Sails and Head Injuries on CD.
@Jake Jive : Giffo plays a Chapman Stick...and sings...
Thanks mate!
