As an avid cricket follower loved that story. Nice to get my sporting hero Mike Atherton on the show to discuss other cricketing scandals. Hi Phil, another really interesting chat. I have always thought that instead of fighting wars, they should have a test match ! The cricket I grew up with (my grandfather was fanatical) seemed to be for only the very brave - shine pads and finger padded gloves didn’t seem to offer much protection! The comment about a randy mole was hysterical! Like another of your posters, i too remember Imran Khan!!! I will never forget coming out of a corner shop, that days paper was in one of those pay to get the paper out of the box things… I stood looking at a photo of Imran delivering a blistering bowl… OMG what a BEAUTIFUL man AND he was, at that time, captain of Sussex - my home county - I literally stood mesmerized for a few minutes. LOL - I was going to email you to say “ my mug is now a collectors item”!!!! - Keep up the great channel
What a lovely comment and yes I think many women - and a few men - discovered a love for cricket by gazing adoringly at photos of Khan back in the day!! Glad the mug found a good home too! 😊
The more I hear about Diana, the less I like her. Even after the chilling encounter with Al Fayed, she continued with Dodi. And with her children no less! Indeed, Harry appears to be his mother’s son, albeit without his mother’s street smarts.
Nothing too chilling took place initially - the fayeds could be generous and fun hosts by all accounts. But it’s clear she was warned about the family’s darker side.
@@philmcraigI’m no Paul Burrell fan, nevertheless his detailed account of an incident with Dodi’s father has a ring of truth. He was close to Diana. Perhaps you could address it in a future episode.
Is there any evidence that Diana cared much about people as individuals? She was good at bringing attention to worthy causes - hugging children with AIDS etc - and I'm not saying that it was entirely performative, but would she have cared if Al-Fayed was abusing his employees so long as her own needs were being met? It seems that his being considered not quite respectable might have been a plus in her eyes - another way of sticking it to the Royal Family. Your chats with Shauna are always interesting so I look forward to that.

@pollyparrot I agree, if Diana was getting what she wanted would she have cared about 'shop girls'? Your point about Fayed's being a bit of an outlaw rebel appealing to Diana makes sense. She was on the outs with the Establishment, so two fingers up and sand in their faces might have been a bonus.

Hi Phil, You mentioned Bradman and Australia playing England! I met Arthur Morris and his lovely wife Judith through a friend of my husband and I. Arthur as you would know, was a part of the Invincibles when they won 34 games against England in 1948! (Psst. I only know the last part as Wiki told me so!) At that time, Arthur and Judith had retired in the Hunter Valley at Cessnock. A funny story. When Arthur was having his first consultation with our friend, an Opthalmologist he asked Arthur what had he done in his past career. Arthur replied that he had played cricket. The doctor thought Arthur had hearing problems so let it go and went along with it. As an aside, the doctor said, he too had played cricket when he was young. Arthur asked him which club did he play at. The doctor replied that he hadn't been very good at cricket so played C grade at a club in Paterson. (Paterson is a little township near Maitland.) He then returned the question to Arthur. You can imagine his shock when Arthur told him who he was! It was very long consultation! Arthur loved telling his many yarns on his past cricket days. I think it made him feel relevant and special. Which the elderly often times don't feel this way.
What a lovely story. My Dad saw the Invincibles when they toured England in 48 and everyone kew they were watching the last act of an incredible cricket story. I visited the Bradman museum in NSW last year - a real shrine for me! Tho apparently he wasn't always loved by his team mates

Re Dodis behaviour and what Diana & the RF knew: I expect that the Queen knew because she would be briefed by MI5 & MI6, who would naturally look closely at anyone involved with a member of the RF. Its obvious that Fayed was using Diana for his own purposes, Dodi was his pawn, and Diana was probably thinking it would be a terrific Up Yours to the RF. Prior to her death, her behaviour was distinctly unstable, lots of very unwise impetuous decisions being made. I imagine that nobody wanted Diana to marry into such a corrupt family. Re the conspiracy theories, about murder of Diana, I find it hard to believe anyone would try to take Diana out, but I would not be surprised if soneone tried to eliminate Dodi. The problem is, even if Dodi died, who would she have taken up with next? Like Jackie O, she needed someone super super rich who could give her luxury and privacy. Not an easy thing to find. I dare say the Kennedys were appalled by Onassis too.
Pretty sure the Queen and those around her made sure she was never linked to Fayed in any way. He was desperate to be part of the British establishment, and for many years before Diana and Dodi were a thing. I think Diana was free to date whoever she liked at this time, but that she did feel the weight of being mother to the future King which she took seriously. My gut feeling is she simply enjoyed their hospitality and that is all. I v much doubt she would have married into this family. It is Fayed who wants us all to believe this was going to happen. We also know now she was experiencing paranoia for a long time, a big contributing factor was Bashir's manipulation, meaning it's highly likely a lot of her decisions stemmed from fear and were thus not the best. She fired her personal secretary, someone who was always loyal to her, so time now shows us her judgement could be poor.

I have often found people discount the fact that Diana clearly wanted to continue the lifestyle to which she had become accustomed. Why wouldn't she? I certainly would. She was used to Royal Air Force planes, the Royal yacht. Invitations from other Royals to vacation homes and Royal Residence. Staying at Royal properties. Mixing with very wealthy friends. Being hosted by them. Suddenly she was the divorcée. Effectively shut out of those connections. After the divorce she received the largest settlement that Charles could manage. Sorry Andrew isn't there, but very glad you're back, Phil! Savile and Al Fayed were both defanged long before they died. Diana had the upper hand. Harrods wasn't the only store in town. Why didn't Diana just stop shopping there? Freebies? I don't know if I agree with Lady C that she was serious about Dodi. Since Savile could clearly be seen groping girls right on TV, I think there's some sort of enabling that goes on. Is this the treacherous side of indulgence? Bobby Charlton! My sister and I were fans. ⚽️
The peak of my interest in cricket was when I was 16 and doing my "O" levels (1983). I had a massive crush on Imran Khan and was almost late getting upto school for my history exam 🤦. With regards to Mohammed Fayed, I can't understand how this didn't get out until now. Very much like Jimmy Savile although as a kid I was always creeped out by him.
Khan was another example of the 'playboy cricketer' who had many very glamorous relationships, but then found God it seems (or a political career anyway). But what a player in his prime!
Thank you, very interesting once again. Regarding Harrods, another sad revelation about how people can act when the power balance is tilted massively in their favour. Can only conclude it must be more difficult to resist doing it if you have the opportunity, and those who are in positions to do it but choose not to should be highly praised. Fantastic job of trying to describe the enigma that is cricket in a limited time. Those familiar at least a little bit with baseball will have a reasonable idea. There's lots of similarities along with the differences, and the "vibe" is the same, especially when listening on the radio. What's less obvious is that it was set up with playing the game in mind only, and only relatively recently made any concession to the audience and as a planned business model. The longer versions of the game still seems absurd from a contemporary view of prioritising viewing figures and making money. Didn't know much about Bill's life. There's an incredible amount of characters who've played the sport from all places and backgrounds. I'd suggest his attitude might partly stem from the fact that as scary as facing a fast bowler would be, especially without modern PPE, it's nothing when compared to 88mm shells flying around your head! Not raining in Bristol as I write amazingly, another four flies to the boundary. Hopefully those Aussies will be ground into the dust, in the nicest gentlemanly way possible of course!

Phil, Paul Burrell has spoken and said Diana had told him Al Fayed snr had made advances towards her. If this is true why then would Diana go on holidays on his Yacht and then connect with Dodi?? 🤔 Looking forward to you and Shauna disgusting this further.
Paul B always seemed opportunistic and shameless to me. I don’t doubt there’s credibility to the accusations against Fayed, but Paul B lacks credibility IMO.
I think Paul puts his own spin on the past with certain conversations as Diania isn’t here to say differently. I’m sure she could turn a blind eye to things ….
Am I going to battle to get your book as well in South Africa? I do have an appointment with our bookstore for Andrew's book for next year to try to get.
I wonder how Henry is going to deal with the halo of his mum slipping. Diana had no qualms using her children to cover her affairs, one in particular. Having her lover give her boys riding lessons. Then she took her boys on holiday on Fayed's yacht, all of them taking full advantage of the luxurious freebies. For all of Charles' faults, he never exposed his children to his lover.
That' true but Charles and his spin doctors did deploy 'the boys' to attack unfavourable coverage, and ex courtiers who took Diana's side, whilst allowing their preferred journalists and authors to have special access. Another reason - I would argue - why Harry came to believe that the system is rigged.
Phil why in heck would Diana ever get herself involved Fayed family & bring her sons into it ? Diana read every american glossy like vanity fair People magazine Vogue Cosmoplotian
Thank you once more for your podcast. I consider myself clueless on cricket matters. As a child I would bat a pretend cricket ball around the garden with my neighbour Nigel and later in life admire the spectacle from a train of stationary figures in a field clad in white as I went to work in London. I would see the same figures on my way home in the afternoon looking very much as though they hadn't moved an inch. It's therefore interesting to note that there's more to this sport than meets the eye. As for Al Fayed, will just have to watch this space, but disgusting as his behaviour was, I don't think he was in the same league as Saville; Saville was an absolute demon. Are there any experts out there on Oriana Fallaci? She was quite a character, would love to hear someone talk about her.
I wonder if Paul Burrell is jumping on a handy bandwagon? He has always traded on Diana this gets him back in the world's eye, maybe another book in the wind. 100 + women must have a solid basis Given the ethnic attitude to women, the vast power money brings and the rumoured arrogance no surprise, but did he risk loosing connection with Diana,? She was his ticket to the royal family. Diana was street wise, and her boys most important, would she allow him access to influence them if she knew what he was like? She would, I think have run for the hills and taken them with her, Dodi may have been important to her but not compared to the boys, I think he was just a warning to the royal family, a look at what I can do if you push me hard enough
Some people claim Diana was trying to make Dr. Khan jealous by cavorting with Dodi. Harold seems to have inherited her poor judgement. I have little respect for adult victims who wait until the alleged predator is dead to speak up (feminism requires women to have agency--you can't have power without responsibility). It sounds too much like a shakedown. But there seem to be separate justice systems for the favored few and the connected nowadays, so the police or CPS may be the ones at fault for not acting when he was alive. What I've heard of the Rotherham scandal is appalling. Have you mongered that yet?
Meg did not have fight to get anywhere, her uncle got her an internship, which her father paid for, in Rio. Her father got her bit parts is shows he was working on then her husband helped get other roles then she met the Dimwit Prince. The only work she did was as a yacht girl on her back.
I can't stand Meghan, but to be fair, I reckon she had to work very hard indeed to get work, because she lacked sufficient talent. I suspect she had an easy start due to her father, but after that she had to hustle, and push her way in. And use others as stepping stones. Like her first husband, the celebrity chef in Toronto, and then Harry. It how she operates, because she still lacks talent, and is still having to hustle. Marrying Harry didn't solve her problems.
Phil. Came back to say could when u talk to Shauna could u go into how Mohommed el Fayed made his money and who his wife's family were. It has relevence to all things Fayed related including RF and Diana. Thanks❤
I've read that Dodi Fayed was engaged to Kelly Fisher when he died. Do you know if this is true?... On the subject of Harry & Meghan, I don't like them at all, but I appreciate that others have a different opinion of them.
Fisher believed she was engaged but then she got very quickly dumped after Diana appeared on the rivera that summer - but only after a bizarre week when Kelly was on one yacht, Diana was on another, and Dodi was shuttling between the two!
Kelly appeared on TV, weeping, with her lawyer, showing her big engagement ring, claiming she was engaged to Dodi, and that he had broken his promise of marriage, i.e. she wanted to sue for breach of promise, damages etc. I recall thinking at the time that it was shades of 'The French Lieutenant's Woman'!
I wonder if you could interview Anthony Scaramucci on the American election..He offers a different view than what many English reporters give. He knows Trump and is worth listening to. He’s on a programme “ The Rest is Politics. US .” With Katy Kay. You’ve only got one month to get him.
I think there are always suggestions of people cashing in with stories like this and yet - with this one - it turns out that there had been numerous complaint, up to and including the police, for two decades - and it's also true that back in the 90s people were more easily intimidated by private security, powerful lawyers and the offer of NDAs. Plus you could argue that 'lower status women' making allegations about very powerful and well connected men were just not believed in the way that they are now after METOO.
Dear michael cole...has had alot to say on the royals of late.........but now he has disappeared.........THE RIGHT HAND MAN?ENABLER.......FOR DECADES......HE IS UP TO HIS NECK IN THIS....HE SHOULD BE PROSECUTED FOR HIS INVOLVEMENT...........HE DIDN T MIND BACK THEN DID HE!
Thank you so very much. I am surprised that the people are shocked. I live in Southern Germany but even I had known about Fayed a "dirty old man"...also Inhad known about Jimmy Levine and Domingos and Domingos Entourage! But i think its much more interessting what happend with the former German Minister of Health and his parties, or the Stories about dear Elton John! I mean, I know a Lot of women who used her bodies and Talents to step Up the ladder...and dont want to start from the gay Scene and their "little and dirty Secrets"
No need to apologise for personal subjective likes and dislikes. Of all the sports I love, there seems more valid reasons for people to dislike cricket than all others combined, IMO!

Appreciate that Liz and thanks so much for watching
Regularly, viewing from New Zealand.
Good evening Lynnette! Grey wet morning here in London (as usual!) 😊
There had to be a strong reason that Fayed was never granted British Citizenship.
Very good point Penny !😊
He wasn't doing anything the RF aren't doing. Maybe they didn't want the competition.
@@TaraSykes3 😂
The peak of my interest in cricket was when I was 16 and doing my "O" levels (1983). I had a massive crush on Imran Khan and was almost late getting upto school for my history exam 🤦. With regards to Mohammed Fayed, I can't understand how this didn't get out until now. Very much like Jimmy Savile although as a kid I was always creeped out by him.
Khan was another example of the 'playboy cricketer' who had many very glamorous relationships, but then found God it seems (or a political career anyway). But what a player in his prime!
@@Summerhouse-z7n as an Aussie... Dennis Lillee was my crush. 🥰
Yes, please don't stop.
Thanks for the great comments Jim and yes bring on the next ashes and - maybe - a different result down under to the usual one!
@@philmcraig We can but dream! Something magical about listening to the action in the clear cold winter nights.

@@jimb9063 very happy childhood memories of the radio in the chilly English bedroom and the commentators talking of warm summer days and exotic animals ( and I don’t mean Lille and Thompson)!
Next week Boris Johnson's 800 page memoir Unleashed is with us. Narrated in a Billy Bunter banter style he likes, I read. Go on Phil, pull some strings and get the controversial former PM on the show 😊. Apparently it is peppered with antiquated wordage and Latin. Golly gosh !
No nothing about cricket but that was very interesting, love the fascinating characters !!☘☘
sorry should have " Know " not No !! 🙄
Thanks for giving it a chance! 😊
Phil, Paul Burrell has spoken and said Diana had told him Al Fayed snr had made advances towards her. If this is true why then would Diana go on holidays on his Yacht and then connect with Dodi?? 🤔
Looking forward to you and Shauna disgusting this further.
I'm very sceptical about Paul B - tho we can't discount anything now and he was, for a while, very close to Diana
Yes, I heard that from Paul too.. Also looking forward to hearing your talk with Shauna. From Australia.
Paul B always seemed opportunistic and shameless to me. I don’t doubt there’s credibility to the accusations against Fayed, but Paul B lacks credibility IMO.
@@susanpook58 I am not one who believes everything Burrell says, but in his interview he does seem to be credible on particular matters.
It seems that Diana didn’t appear to know the truth about anyone or anything.
She lost her path.
Could the religion, if she'd married Dodi, have caused issues for the heir?
Not many knew the truth about Diana either, thanks to Harry, her skeletons are coming out, one stink after another.
@@janwhite6038 bingo !
Can’t wait to delve into Fayed with you for our October chat Phil. Your opening enthralled me!
@SusanMarg above had some interesting ideas for us too! 😊
Love you guys...

Thanks so much Debbie, and Steve!! 😊😊
Has anyone spoken to Michael Cole recently?
That could be interesting
Phil why in heck would Diana ever get herself involved Fayed family & bring her sons into it ? Diana read every american glossy like vanity fair People magazine Vogue Cosmoplotian
It's an excellent question and - much as I remain a fan - it does go to her poor judgment in the final year or so.
Hi Phil from Queensland Australia 🇦🇺 😀 I enjoy your show don't always agree but that's OK too. Keep going ❤😊
Hiya Sue - thanks for watching and for your very encouraging message!
Thanks Giovanna. It always does look very picturesque from a train!
Raine Spencer was Diana's mother??!! I am sure you know that Raine was her STEPmother, and that this was an inadvertent mistake!
Oh don’t I say step ? My bad. And yes I do know all about how ‘acid’ came into the Spencer family life!
She would, I think have run for the hills and taken them with her, Dodi may have been important to her but not compared to the boys,
I think he was just a warning to the royal family, a look at what I can do if you push me hard enough
yes - she v much enjoyed sending a message to the Palace like that I think!
Is there any evidence about Phillips view on the Al Fayeds?
Some people claim Diana was trying to make Dr. Khan jealous by cavorting with Dodi. Harold seems to have inherited her poor judgement.
I have little respect for adult victims who wait until the alleged predator is dead to speak up (feminism requires women to have agency--you can't have power without responsibility). It sounds too much like a shakedown. But there seem to be separate justice systems for the favored few and the connected nowadays, so the police or CPS may be the ones at fault for not acting when he was alive. What I've heard of the Rotherham scandal is appalling. Have you mongered that yet?
No but the grooming gangs scandal is certainly on my list!

Meg did not have fight to get anywhere, her uncle got her an internship, which her father paid for, in Rio. Her father got her bit parts is shows he was working on then her husband helped get other roles then she met the Dimwit Prince. The only work she did was as a yacht girl on her back.
😮
I can't stand Meghan, but to be fair, I reckon she had to work very hard indeed to get work, because she lacked sufficient talent. I suspect she had an easy start due to her father, but after that she had to hustle, and push her way in. And use others as stepping stones. Like her first husband, the celebrity chef in Toronto, and then Harry. It how she operates, because she still lacks talent, and is still having to hustle. Marrying Harry didn't solve her problems.
not Rio---Argentina, if you are going to gossip, then get the facts straight

I'd call it Gourmet Gossip. Rather delicious.
Phil. Came back to say could when u talk to Shauna could u go into how Mohommed el Fayed made his money and who his wife's family were. It has relevence to all things Fayed related including RF and Diana. Thanks❤
Yes very good idea 😊
Wasn’t raine the stepmother aka ’acid’ but apparently rather a nice lady
Yes she was - should have been clearer! Very fond of Harrods hospitality 😊
I recall thinking at the time that it was shades of 'The French Lieutenant's Woman'!
the rich......it's a sliding scale, isn't it?
7 lady Colin said its her doctor and its perfectly normal!
Why have they waited till he is dead, and cannot deny or confirm the claims
Thoroughly enjoy your program with or without Andrew, but I was wondering if you will continue solo or will Andrew return later? From 🇨🇦
Hi Marie - I’m going to experiment with guest hosts and Andrew will do the occasional cameo too! But basically c’est moi (as they say in 🇨🇦)😊
Sounds great!
I wonder if you could interview Anthony Scaramucci on the American election..He offers a different view than what many English reporters give. He knows Trump and is worth listening to. He’s on a programme “ The Rest is Politics. US .” With Katy Kay. You’ve only got one month to get him.
A quick shout out to the cricketing legend Graham Thorpe who left us a few weeks ago. Too soon.
Why now after his death? Makes no sense to me🏴
I think there are always suggestions of people cashing in with stories like this and yet - with this one - it turns out that there had been numerous complaint, up to and including the police, for two decades - and it's also true that back in the 90s people were more easily intimidated by private security, powerful lawyers and the offer of NDAs. Plus you could argue that 'lower status women' making allegations about very powerful and well connected men were just not believed in the way that they are now after METOO.
People around these sickos need to speak up not the victims their little sick cover up anything ones

Thank you so very much. I am surprised that the people are shocked. I live in Southern Germany but even I had known about Fayed a "dirty old man"...also Inhad known about Jimmy Levine and Domingos and Domingos Entourage!
