Hello Phil, you are a good, kind man. Your chats each side of the interview are fine with me. Your interview with Maureen was very compelling. She is so coherent and convincing. I am old enough to remember JFK and how he was the great hope of the age. I remember his tiny son saluting in the cemetery after his death. Later sadly we did find out about his feet of clay. I remember Chaopaquiddick and, like many others, still recall how shocking it was and how disgraceful was Ted Kennedy. Maybe it is a qualification for great office that people are in some ways appalling.
What a generous and lovely comment! Thanks Sally that really is nice to read. And yes a certain ‘edge’ and selfishness can take a politician far it seems. Tho in that family it went rather further than that ! 😊
I have listened to Maureen interviewed many times on her recent book. The accounts have been shocking to hear and I’m sure painful to read. Courageous to write for sure. Not to mention Joan Kennedy. Ethel has been recently canonized in her passing. Phil, your shows singularly have been very interesting. Thanks.
What a fascinating interview. Having been brought up here in Scotland, the product of a mother who was 100 per cent Irish, I did rather idolise the Kennedy family (my mum and her sister thought JFK was wonderful). I read everything I could about the family and belatedly had to accept they were not to be admired! This book is one I need to buy.
Dear Phil - thank you for a wonderful podcast. I appreciate your insight and comments which always provide food for thought. You are one of the few commentators I have heard mention that this government has a majority yet not a majority of votes as the right wing vote was split. Indeed we have probably the worst situation possible, with the second lowest turnout for 100 years, and Keir Stammer getting 2 million votes fewer than Jeremy Corbyn, a large number of MPs are inexperienced and have the arrogance of thinking they carry the will of most of the country. I am going to buy Maureen's book - and I was so pleased you mentioned The Five to her. Thanks again. P.S. You are very good but we miss Andrew
@@jessie4954thanks so much for the lovely comment and the generous donation Jessie. I’m enjoying the solo life but do miss my mate Andrew as well. I hope you can catch David Hooper on Sunday because he really does have something to say about Fayed, the law and the police! 😊

Thank you for this great interview, Maureen fires with both barrels! I've listened to two youtubers who serialised and commented on the book and I'm afraid the Kennedy curse is actually a curse on the women who have the misfortune to get involved with them. There's no doubt they are charismatic but they're best admired from a safe distance.
Maureen is correct. It's sad that these women were abused and vilified, then ignored. It still happens and no one seems to care. There were plenty of rumors about Martha Mitchell being murdered because she knew things about Watergate. I'd like to know the truth about that too.
Fantastic interview, Phil … and a very interesting guest/topic. It‘s amazing how one is fed myths about historical events, which just goes to show how important historians and honest reporters of past and current events are! Otherwise, how is society to learn and to maintain any sort of freedom?
Any look at the relationship between men and women over the millennia would show this behavioral fall from decency and respect. It is not new. And it is horrendous. Hopefully, more men will show respect for their women counterparts and this world becomes a better place. Thanks for the interview, Phil.
Hello Phil, loved this interview with Maureen recapping her book with you. I had listened to this book, read by Cheere Denise, which had me a-gape & a-gasp at the misbehaviour’s of these Kennedy men…🤯🤯🫣 so, seeing the author discussing this with you was a treat. I appreciate her forthright, non-apologetic stance. Looking forward to when the time comes,(and it will) the P-Diddy/Diddler down fall. ❤️❤️
Swift clearly needed the blue light, but the aftermath exposes the 'mindset', if they accept the small stuff it makes you wonder what else? The Mones are a good example here - still not been made to pay it back as far as I am aware. Yes this sort of stuff goes on in business, but it shouldn't in government. In the NHS there is a policy of no expensive benefits, only a small token gift is permitted like a box of choc or flowers, but that is all. In local gov you can not be related to anyone in the council when putting in a tender or when applying for a job. It would be best practice to have a blanket policy for accepting 'nothing'. Look to America at what happens when we let it slide, the pharmaceutical companies buying congress votes, leaving millions unable to access medicine, and now the Trump and Musk affair - sadly, there are many, many more examples.
When I was at the Aussie state broadcaster we were not allowed to accept free lunches or any gift costing more than 5 dollars! They never found out about that Ferrari tho! 😊
Just learned Edna O'Brian died last July. Would you consider doing one or more episodes about her? T'would be a good subject for you and Shauna. Many thanks for your consideration.
This book left my jaw on the floor. Also LOVED The Five. I listened to a podcast of the book where Hallie explains how vilified she was for writing the book. Why am I still shocked by these things?
Extraordinary. What a great woman! Thank you so much for that interview. Good to see, that you are one of the good guys. Like every week….of course I already ordered the book. Also I don‘t see a problem with you chatting for a few minutes at all. I do appreciate your remarks every time, if somebody is in a rush, just forward. I do remember reading about Chappaquiddick at the time in German papers. I did not realize how horrible it really was. And how unfathomably irresponsible he behaved, just worried about himself and his privilege. I applaude Maureen for bringing all this to light. Kudos to her! Looking forward to getting the book.
@@philmcraig the more I think about it, the more angry I get. I cannot believe, that anybody would complain about Maureen‘s book being „angry“. What kind of a person manages to not be outraged by all this? I can only imagine, and the images I get are not good. How on earth was it possible, that Ted Kennedy walked away from all this and suddenly he was an honourable person again? Oh my, now I am wary of reading the book, I will be furious.
Cheere Denise read the book on her podcast, and she was sobbing at the end of the chapter on Rosemary, as were a number of her listeners, including myself.
I've read Maureen's book. It was a real shocker. I had to take a break from reading the book a few times because I was quite sickened by some of the chapters. I did finish the book but it stayed with me for quite a while. Recommend the book but it was very upsetting so be prepared.
There were also factual inaccuracies in it and it didn't come across as objective for me. John Jrs and Carolyn's burial details were incorrect. I think it is easy to forget what JFK's election meant to the Irish and Roman Catholics. It was similar to Obama and what that meant to Black people.
Didn't Rosemary have issues because the obstetrician who was supposed to deliver her was running late and the nurses made Rose try to delay giving birth until he got there. Rosemary's story is just so painful.
She certainly had a troubled life before the lobotomy, then no life afterwards. And no family visits either until after Joe died many decades later. Gothic!
This should be entertaining! Lately, I have been on the trail of info about Ethel Kennedy. So, hoping for that, but I am sure the site will be fun regardless.
Amazing podcast, I see reflection of this in what happened with Diana. She was also labeled eccentric and unstable, ditto stories here and the story about Diana obsessively calling seems so fake, somebody must’ve hacked her phone and made the calls.
I appreciate a person finally telling the actually well-known truths about the Kennedy family. I despair of her attempt to connect Trump to it. Clinton, yes. Trump has zero ‘scandals’ since his affair that ended his first marriage. Lawfare must be counted when women want truths to be faced.
