    I feel like people who only stan singers and belittle the importance of vocal technique sometimes ignore the freedom and creative abilities that being a vocalist allows for, especially when it comes to making music and songwriting. The ability to use your voice and vocal abilities to enhance your songs/albums is extremely important imo. Being a well-rounded vocalist or having many vocal skills under your belt allows a musician to be more creative with their melodies, to express emotion without having to worry about going off-key, to create an entirely new mood solely through vocalizing. If you can only comfortably sing 1.5 octaves without much agility, how interesting can your music be really?

    It's interesting how fandoms takes some critiques personally as if singer wasn't a profession like any other. I mean, yeah, some people will use valid point of critique in order to attack an individual, but you can identify it analysing the context. People are flawed and there's always room for improvement. I think it's not okay to tell someone they can't be a singer because they're not great vocalists, but it's totally ok to say it'll be good for them to improve their skills. Music itself it's bigger, vocals are just part of what makes a great song. Taylor is just a singer, but she's an artist when it comes to songwriting, and she doesn't need to sound like Beyoncé to be an artist in her own right, and Beyoncé doesn't need to be a songwriter either. You can compare their abilities, but you can't say, industry wise, that one is more deserving than the other because what they can or can't do at their job (of course I'm not talking about race and privileges here).

    Pro singer here! I want to point out too, that certain expert vocalists can still have major technique issues, BUT still sound amazing because of their natural SINGING ability. Take Ari, one of my all-time favorites: she manages to have incredible soft palette placement despite that fact that her melismatic articulation (aka riffing) looks like she’s eating the air when she goes for any run. You’re supposed to let the jaw hang & just let the notes fly when you riff, so to see SUCH bad technique on her and her STILL get those notes she does just shows how naturally gifted she is at singing itself. Super interesting who can get away with this and who can’t!

    • @AlexisDimes
      @AlexisDimes 2 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      It’s also important to remember that these singers are not just trying to sing properly but trying to also make sure their voice sounds unique and is recognized on the radio or in the store when people are shopping. Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande were taught by their vocal coaches to sing in a way that makes your voice unique so they all have these quirks but they are taught to do this without damaging their voice.

    A singer is someone who sings. A vocalist is someone who SANGS. Not all singers are vocalists but all vocalists are singers.
    EDIT: Lmao 7:35 was great and so true! That’s why a lot of the better judges on singing competition shows (and even music critics who give reviews for a living) don’t or can’t sing well but nonetheless provide great constructive feedback. You don’t have to be able to sing to know if something sounds bad; you just need a good ear lol. And just because someone can sing, doesn’t mean they make great judges, just like how someone great at math doesn’t mean they’re good at teaching it. In fact, so many of the singer/artist judges are often too nice like they’re almost afraid to give out criticism when it’s called for perhaps bc they don’t want to upset fans of the show and potentially hurt their singing career.

  • @clemandneck
    @clemandneck 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    YES ! A lotof people tend to forget that vocal chords are an instrument. Singing is like playing the guitar : some people are better at it than others because they have better technique. The thing is, you can have the best technique in the world, if you can't put emotions, nuances, and everything that gives life to what you're playing, you're not a good musician. Because music is an art. So, my opinion is that you might be a good technician because you know how to use your voice perfectly right, but if you can't make the music sound good, you're not a musician. Some singers have both, some have neither. And that is, to me, the objective way to see it. What ppl don't get is that you can like smth that isn't good, and not like smth that is. It's not a bad thing bc you're entitled to your own taste. But that doesn't mean that good and bad don't exist. So, in a nutshell, I think you're totally right, like always haha.

    Ariana is also a perfect example of being both:
    as a singer she can deliver a very emotional performance which happens more than it should to her after all what happened to her, so she can really put her emotions out naturally so it sounds so real and raw (ofc)
    as a vocalist, she just has it all now
    - agility
    - tehnique
    - support up to F5
    - resonance on mid belts
    - good lows for such a high pitched voice, she can change the tone as well (like in Save Your Tears)
    - creativity (litteraly every single Sweetener Tour performance has at least 20 new vocals, her songs are way better live vocally (breathin's Bb5s and C6s, no tears left to cry's A5s, god is a woman's Bb6s, G#6s and F#6s, Be Alright's G#5s and way more)
    - she has the range (from C#3 (i think, bc a lot people heard in some of her songs to belting up to C6(she was playing with her voice but still) to Eb7 (she probably can go higher)
    - she knows her voice extremely well
    She she does all those hard songs and vocals while constantly dancing and moving, for hours...
    ...and even better is that she is constantly improving and working on her voice which is also proven by the fact that she is even better after all these high notes live over the years instead of losing her voice

    Singer is the whole job - doing the recording, promoting the songs, doing interviews, captivating the audience, and building a following. Whereas vocalist is a specification in that job.
    Some people are good vocalists but suck at establishing a following. I think that's partly because their songs are too vocal focused. Nobody really enjoys too much belting or runs today. Nowadays, a song that you can vibe to everyday is the recipe for a successful single. To most people, that is simply not a song with lots of belting and vocal agility.
    Plus the average music listener is not vocally talented enough to keep up and sing with a song like that hence why they turn to singers with less vocal focused music but are much more enjoyable maybe in terms of the beat, the vibes, the lyrics, the "singability" of the song.
    With this, you can sort of get why more vocally oriented singers are less popular. Taeyeon and Ailee comes to mind. Taeyeon has a much more listenable music compared to Ailee. Of course, Taeyeon is a good vocalist too but I feel like she knows how to make music better by not oversprinking them with too much vocals. She keeps it simple and incorporates other things to make her songs interesting.

    I agree when you said Mariah is both a singer and vocalist why?
    1. She uses her emotions to sing
    2. She knows how to arrange the song in the best way.
    3. Her vocals always fit the songs she's singing
    4. She always deliver the vocals in the best way depending on the song type, genre and style.
    5. Speaking of style she always styles out everything (her runs, melody, tone, belts and vocals)
    6. She's always focusing to have a spectacular and amazing vocals.
    7. She's always been technical to all of her belts, Whistles and any other part of her vocals.
    8. She had a great breath support, resonance, support, projection, runs etcand she always try to be tension free as much as possible.
    9. she is a a very well rounded vocalist and singer
    10. She knows how to sing and to sustain her voice (sure her vocals might not been as great as her prime but she still can pull off soemthing impressive vocally also she went through alot of things).
    Also anothe thing I wanna say is. Mariah is a very versatile singer/vocalist she always had alot of singing style while being very distinctive, she sung almost all of the genres (Pop, House, Country, ballad, rock, Blues, Soul, Gospel, Dance, Latin pop, Rap, RnB, Christmas, Hip-hop etc.) and her being versatile is probably her most underrated things for her.

It grinds my gears when people downplay vocal technique whenever comparison discussions come up. Average / good / amazing vocalists are determined based on vocal technique simply because it is the most objective. Whereas emotions and expressions are very much subjective which can be interpreted differently from one person to another. E.g. We can objectively say whether a singer is singing with dynamics or not but we can’t say the same about how much the singer is conveying their emotion. I could say Adele’s singing never moves me but another person would disagree and the debate would be never-ending.

    I stan vocalists. I will never discredit singer-songwriters like Taylor, Adele, and Mariah, but there is NOTHING more impressive than a live vocalist. Kelly Clarkson is perfect example of being both a outstanding singer AND vocalist. For me, a vocalist is able to sustain notes comfortably with controlled vibrato.

I feel like you give an objective point of view and you present the reasons for your arguments which leaves us your viewers open to disagree with you and present our own arguments if need be. I feel like the general public has lost the value of what great singing actually is, so we need commentary like yours to sort of place things into perspective. It's not a measure of someone's worth as a human being whether they sing well or not or are stronger in certain areas than in others, it's simply a testament to their skill and what they are good or bad at. And we can discuss these things in a respectable way without bashing anyone. I sing myself and am always analyzing the technique of singers I listen to, it's fun for me so videos like yours are super fun to watch and learn from! Keep them coming!

    About the belting and high note thing, Lauren can do riffs and runs decently, her lower register is great, she delivers the songs with good emotions, yet Ally is usually considered better because of her upper register and belting.

    • @matteobuda9430
      @matteobuda9430 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      the beginning of the video should help you out in this: Lauren is (debated) a better singer than Ally, but Ally is a better VOCALIST for sure since she has more technique to her. And this is objective. Objectively, Ally is the better VOCALIST in 5H: she has the biggest supported range (G#3 up to E5, while Lauren is F#3-A4), the biggest range overall, the widest mixed voice range (mixes with vibrato up to C6!!!), she has the best vibrato in the group, a very solid falsetto and head voice and she is versatile.

      Lauren is a singer. Ally is a vocalist. I’d say they’re both pretty exclusively limited to those terms and I feel like ANOF explained that concept in this video, but I’ll explain as well. Lauren has a strong lower register and decent agility. She also has a very appealing tone and is especially emotive in her singing. However, her technique is extremely flawed and always has been. An example of this is the slow degeneration of her upper register to the point where she can now belt higher than she can go in head voice/falsetto.
      Contrast this to Ally, who’s emotiveness and artistic expression in her singing has slowly waned over the years, but her technique has always been the best out of the 5H girls. The skill in which she can project and support her voice, combined with her strong head voice is proof of her being technically competent. That’s why she is often considered the better of the two.
      Out of everyone from 5H, Dinah encompasses the point made about Chloe and Perrie. Dinah is not quite as technically competent as Ally, or quite as emotive as Lauren, but she is the most well rounded out of all of them. She has adequate technique, incredible musicality, a strong belting range, a strong upper register, a good lower register (not in 5H, but as of the last 2 years), and excellent agility and creativity. Ally is a good vocalist, Lauren is a good singer, Dinah is both a good singer and a good vocalist.
      As far as the other two members go, I’d say Camila is both a decent singer and decent vocalist, and Normani is an average singer and inconsistently decent vocalist since her technique and creativity outside of her belting range can be adequate.

    • @iosashes2087

      @@noahlol14spinach95 she has! She was able to support up to C#5 in the group’s early days, but her voice declined a lot further into the group. She and Dinah can both now support F#3-C5 and Ally from G#3-D5-G5 (HV). Camila supported G3-C#5 and Normani F3-Bb4 at their best but I’m not sure they still can.

      I’m not 100% familiarized with these voices but my #1 rank would came from these 3 girls (not sure about the positions)
      #3 Chloe Bailey: Looove her, my favorite from this gen bc of her tone/style. kinda of classic approach but doesn’t seem to have a wide developed voice and not that consistent (such as high belts above D)
      #2 Faouzia: I’ve only seem one or too performances so not that familiarized, she seems to be a lil inconsistent and have some tension going on bc of her tone modification (which annoys me bc sounds like a cartoon sometimes, like AVA max does and I personally hate) but she’s REALLY strong and has an amazing control and vibrato
      #1 Rachel Zegler: Shes SO good, did not watched that much from her too but she’s from theater so she’s is SO developed, her belts, vibrato, her voice is so free (besides some close vowels that she didn’t mastered yet like E) and imo she’s the most consistent BUT since she’s from theater lacks personality in her voice bc her focus is technique
      RECOMENDATION: The Wizard and I th-cam.com/video/6G0Ed-tzgCI/w-d-xo.html and No One Mours the Wicked (bc of her head voice) th-cam.com/video/vHuRUBLYriw/w-d-xo.html

She’s not comfortable exploring a wider range of vocal pallets yet, but from what I hear the foundation of technique is there more so than it is with Adele and WAY more than Halsey. Oof that last bit I feel that with my soul
    I remember during the get weird tour
    Little mix performed lightning and if you know that song you know the extremely hard note perrie has to hit
    And In the beginning of the tour she did it flawlessly and it sounded great but a little bit past the middle it started to sound like she was in pain forcing out that note
    I commented that maybe perrie should either dodge the note or have all of them harmonize together so it’s not as hard on perrie because that could damage her voice (and low and behold it did thank god she got enough vocal rest but still)
    So then you have toxic mixers coming along saying shit like “you can’t do any better so shut up” or “you’re just mad she’s better than your faves” (even tho little mix is my favorite gg of all time) and like you said my favorite “I bet you sound like garbage she could ousting you at her worst and you at your best” ( no doubt she could but fuck me for being concerned for her voice ig)
    People like that are the reason why vocal criticism is always seen as an attack

    I’m going to go ahead and disagree that Chloe is a better vocalist than Perrie and that’s not because I’m a Little Mix Stan. Perries voice is so dynamic and has a lot of power to it. She can range from Beyoncé to Broadway. Look up her videos without Little Mix she isn’t just a belter she has amazing technique. I feel that she isn’t recognized as much as Chloe. I love Chloe’s music and I hear it everywhere because we are in the States. Not a lot of people here have even heard of Perrie or Little Mix, but you can find a lot of people who know Chloe. I think once Perrie is officially solo, then we can really figure out who’s the better vocalist. To me, Perrie reminds me of Kelly Clarkson. Both powerhouse voices who have such range.
    I feel like Jade would be a better comparison vs Chloe. But I would choose Jade too because I’m a ride or die 💅🏻😂

    Same with singers. Taylor has improved SO MUCH it's unbelievable, but imagine if one day she just decided to stop taking her voice seriously. No matter how much natural talent you have, you need consistency to improve. It's okay to be good, it's okay to suck, what matters is that you work hard towards being better than you were yesterday.

Sorry not sorry but she's probably better than half of those pop singers right now but I guess she won't get worldwide fame because she's a Filipina and I do believe that somehow the international scene is kind of racist towards Filipino singers eventhough they proved their worth, this already happened to Charice Pempengco Jessica Sanchez and probably a lot more that I could not remember. The only Filipinas I know who did make it in the international scene are Lea Salonga and Rachel Ann Go but they're on the performing side of music which is the broadway.

    I had an argument with some people about
    singer vs vocalist
    there was a video of Chris brown and Avery Wilson and other rnb singers
    and I commented Avery Wilson would sing all of them under that table
    they didn't even give avery enough screen time ☠️ that's why I said that
    and people kept going back n forth with me
    saying but Chris brown is rich and famous and has a lot of hits
    and I said yes
    But Avery is a better vocalist

    That’s because Mariah Carey’s mother was an opera singer. That’s where she had gotten some of her training from. When it comes to Christina Aguilera over sings her songs. Kelly Clarkson was on American Idol. And they probably had some of the best vocal coaches on that show. Beyoncé Knowles was singing in the church choir. And she had an good vocal coach. So did the rest of the members of Destiny’s Child. All of the Destiny’s Child members were singing in the church choir. Most of these younger singers don’t even have too much musical training because they had gotten rid of that part from the record companies. Nowadays, the record companies just look for who is the most popular singers and performers on social media

    Ok im going to be completely honest here… I think at this point in her career unless her vocals prove me wrong on her masterclass, current Mariah is a better vocalist than singer. I mean let’s think about it; her vocal abilities are obviously still there as she still has a solid technique, incredible agility, creativity etc. but her tone now just is not great. On the big latto remix for example… her tone on that fantasy verse was very shrill and nasal sounding… but she was able to showcase her ability to do everything that she did with her voice on the original fantasy record. If her tone on this master class is like it was on the remix, then I’ll have proven my point. I also think that if her tone remains this way, that it may be a sign for her to retire the singing aspect of her career (or at least the higher belting) because like I said about if her tone is still shrill sounding, then it just doesn’t sound good anymore.

    • @takemyhand1988
      @takemyhand1988 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually right now she's a better singer than a technician. The tone is because she's hiding her natural tone. Look up stay the night live. That's closer to her actual tone now. But Mariah doesn't open her throat enough to allow that tone to come out.

    • @krissy9128
      @krissy9128 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree that her tone is not the best right now. It was so much better between '18-early '21.
      I think Mariah is still an excellent vocalist who simply cannot do upper belts and super high keys anymore. That's all - she must let it go.
      If she lowers the keys to her songs and rearrange the vocal arrangements, she can pull them off. Also, the creation of more songs using her lower to mid range would allow her current voice to shine so much more.
      Like Toni Braxton/Brandy level keys and vocal arrangements for example...I think she would do great here

    • @Number-ek1hf
      @Number-ek1hf 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@takemyhand1988 I think her Hero/Joy to the world performance is more of her actual tone than anything. It sounds so much fuller and nothing sounds nasally. However I definitely agree that she doesn’t open her throat enough.

    • @lightning0506
      @lightning0506 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The reason behind her tone alterations is actually very simple:
      Mariah is mostly changing her approach in order to sound like she used to, when she was younger but she can't do this due to both, voice damage and natural voice lowering (most probably due to pregnancies and miscarriages), Mariah is aware her voice isn't the same but she's trying to save the day with high larynx and nasality, hence her tone sounds extremely weird and unnatural. She's basically a mezzo-soprano now, trying to apply same principles as she did in 1996. But during Daydream era her voice wasn't damaged and sounded relatively natural, bright, girly and free, while her current tone is constricted, nasal, shrill and annoying (at least for me it is), I'd rather prefer Mariah singing with her more natural tone aka 2017 and Vegas rather than trying to restore what's completely gone for now OR restore her voice completely via undergoing vocal surgery and vocal therapy for, like, a year or something. She has her options but she's not gonna do it in my opinion. But who knows, she might one day...

      @audreyf9092 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@lightning0506 So true, the whisper singing and nasally tone she put on during daydream era is not working for her anymore. She sounds really good when she sticks to mid belts and doesn’t do too much whisper singing.

    The problem with music today are the consumers who keep paying for marketing instead of quality. It's seems to be more about listening to what's "in" or "now" instead of how good it is. Quality artists are not marketed unless they sell their souls or find their way to the In/now crowd's consciousness. The lack of musicians in music today also hurts the overall quality of singing also. Vocal gymnastics and runs are often judged for their inclusion instead of their quality just as too often, a lack of gymnastics is often judged as lacking quality

    I grasp the difference between a singer and a vicalist, but I hate the use of ‘better’. ‘Better’ is very relative and the idea that one is ‘better’ because they’re more varied is also relative. Each person must decide for themselves what they think is ‘better’.

      Unfortunately the general pop music is more rhythm oriented for the last 15 years than melody. I create music that is melody driven and I think it's rare in pop. But there is plenty of amazing vocalists around, most are just not commercially successful.

    I understand that some people might feel irritated and question why you're making videos in which you compare singers, vocalists, etc. but c'mon.. this is entertainment and you speaking your mind. There's nothing wrong about with it and you simply share your knowledge. I watched 3 videos by now and there wasn't any bashing or putting one on a throne just to shove others through dirt. If people don't like this content, they don't need to keep watching. Just keep going and do your thing! :)
