Agree about little mix. Perrie being the best vocalist is never an insult to the other girls as they can certainly hold their own. They ofc all have their strengths but how people are still trying to downplay perries talent I will never understand.

I have noticed this, when there is a post or video appreciating jade, Leigh Anne or jesy(before)... Comments are filled praising them, focusing on them specifically.
But when it's about Perrie, there are always people saying "jade is also good, Leigh Anne is best, make a video on jesy".. They just can't let a post be all about Perrie, appreciating her and letting her take the limelight for once

    • @skayles4716
      @skayles4716 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

But at the same time male vocalists are really judged unfairly.
Men have thicker vocal chords to work with, have to relearn basically everything post puberty and have - in general - an harder time accessing their mixed and head voice ( while female singers tend to struggle with pure chest and lows, except nobody cares much about lows ). People in the vocal nerds communities are especially critical of tenors for struggling with their head voice when - though they have higher and lighter voice - they have the hardest time reclaiming their mixed and head voice out of all male fachs. Thicker vocal tracts also a lot harder for men to get used to giving the adequate amount of force for riffing and running.
While most men regardless of fach can produce a head voice up to A5 - D6, most of us really struggle to find the right coordination to break the F5-G#5 point, because we're naturally engaging in a lot more TA action than women do and thus struggle to allow the CT muscles to do their work. But then people are still gonna give you flack for not being able to replicate Ariana's Eb6s.
Fore more or less the same reasons, people expect male singers to be phrasing verses in the F4-A4 range and belting choruses in the Bb4 - Eb5 range like the girls do ( and most of them end up doing just that and giving you thin vocals as a consequence ) when even high tenors should realistically stay in the D4 - F4 range most of the time, and having their climaxes in the G#4 - B4 range.
A lot of male artists are just coasting, true, but there are also a lot of them going HARD and unnoticed because y'all are judging them to females standards.
Like I see people constantly trashing on Justin Bieber's vocals, but even if he can be thin at times, the dude is often phrasing in the G4-Bb4 area, which is no small feat. This very channel ( no offense, I like the videos, just aknowledging the bias ) also somewhat clowns some of his runs, to then praise worse runs coming out of a female singer, even though _it should be harder for Justin to execute them_.
And then very few people in the vocal nerds communities take the time to appreciate some good Shawn Mendes, Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, Michael Bublé, John Legend, Zayn Malik, Chris Brown, Jason Derulo, Usher, Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake, Avant, Ney-Yo or Treyz Songs vocals... y'all don't even *take interest* in the plethora of good male singers out there, and then have the AUDACITY to clown them every time they crack.

@@skayles4716 you made some great points! I personally was talking about the quality of music not vocal abilities. Their music just doesn’t hit like it should nowadays. But you are 100% right on the judgement of the male vocals

    • @skayles4716
      @skayles4716 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

@@dantesworld Pop music's main market is young girl, so being a handsome male individual just helps coasting more easily.
On the other hand when you have :
      > the bias towards female voices
      > the easier marketability ( even for mediocre products )
      > the masculine image to somewhat uphold ( which can be limiting for artistry )
being limiting factors on the quality of male singer's pop projects.
Why would your label pump money in your art if they get better results for pumping it in marketing ?
Why would the good producers fight to be on your records if even the niche population of musically inclined people isn't gonna appreciate how production and vocals complement themselves ?
Why would the good designers make real efforts for your aesthetic if they are gonna be creatively limited compared to what they could do with women ?
Sadly, the business is harder on women, but the art is harder on men.
In the end everyone loses :(

It does get too much sometimes.
The problem arises when people are like, "Oh my goodness, she is so good! I don't understand why she has to be in a band when she can be a solo artist with her skills." That is rude and disrespectful to the other girls and Perrie herself.

The thing with Mariah's agility is that she actually makes you believe all the runs & riffs that she does are actually part of the song. It's not there for the sake of being extras but rather serving some purposes. That's how accurate she is. Re: Tori vs Mariah’s riffs and runs. Speed and agility aren’t quite the same thing. While Tori definitely can riff faster, I don’t think she covers quite the same range that Mariah has with some of her riffs, or is as inventive. Mariah is influenced not just by gospel and R&B but also jazz and opera.
Calling Mariah a “studio singer” is harsh because even outside the studio most of her peers couldn’t do what she does on the stage live, let alone in the studio. It’s kind of implying she can’t sing or perform at all outside the studio, when we all know that’s not true. I’ve yet to hear a credible cover of so many of her songs, even some old classics from her debut era like Vision of Love (which she has never lip synced) and Love Takes Time. It doesn’t help that maybe only two or three people can whistle nearly as well as she can AND sing well in their normal registers.

I actually think Tori's musicality is at least somewhat comparable to Mariah. I would never compare a singer like JoJo, who is quick and precise, but lacks in musicality and creativity to Mariah, but Tori is a different case.
Being a "studio singer" has nothing to do with how your peers perform in comparison to you. Mariah is still great, but lambs know best that there are many vocal moments she hasn't recreated live. Her 2014 album was an absolute peak of that but there are many moments before that as well. If you consistently record difficult, demanding vocals in the studio which you don't recreate or most of the time, don't even attempt live then being called a "studio singer" is kinda expected.
What cannot be forgotten is that Mariah has always been a great live singer nonetheless.
I also think Caution was a step in the right direction in terms of adjusting the material to her current consistent voice.

I think Leona’s agility going unnoticed is just because the use is subtle rather than showy. It’s one of the two things (the other being the way she uses her head voice) where I can hear an obvious (Daydream/Music Box era) Mariah influence.
Edit: in fact before I knew Mariah’s music I actually used to think Leona Lewis was the one singing Fantasy whenever I heard it being played somewhere or another.
Edit 2: I couldn’t quite find the clip for the Mariah interview about her keys (other than I knew it was in the rainbow era) but I do remember her also saying something similar about You Don’t Know What To Do and she said something “I don’t want to make music that will make you sleep”

Mariah being a "studio singer" is true. She built the songs to be rich in textures, melodies and experimental positions of her instrument. She create music to be appreciated in the way it was thought, produced, and basically "done" in the studio. If she sang songs from caution more, she would've had no problems at all. She's also been trashed so harshly with the smallest fails and was constantly written off, which probably had a toll on her confidence and which subsequently affected her singing that sounds like she has a bit of discomfort. She's way more willing to take risks at home and do some belting at home, evident from this quarantine. She has an image of a vocalist that she has to preserve and people has been trying to take her down, but let's see in the next era what she has to offer again

Loved the video, however, do need to point out some things about Twice. As a longtime Kpop fan (almost 10 years), it is horrible how nasty Korean neitzens can be. The k-netz killed Twice’s confidence when it comes to singing live. In their earlier years, like ITZY, Twice would sing live and sound decent (I’m not the vocal coach here, don’t take my word). The constant backlash killed them. That’s why they look so scared during their encores. You can look at Twice’s behind the scenes or V-Live videos to hear the members singing live and sounding a lot more comfortable. Also, encore stages have changed. Encores used be a time for fan service where the idols would do funny challenges. Now, they have to sing. It’s not fun anymore. That being said, Twice is a senior group in Kpop, 6 years. With six years, there hasn’t been noticeable changes in their vocals to fans. It’s disappointing. They need to work on their vocals and confidence.

I agree that most in Twice are average vocalists except when it comes to Jihyo. Seeing how she was during pre-debut & debut, she is (or at least was) a very good vocalist. Not amazing but definitely good enough to be the main vocalist. Her technique is a little over average, but she has her own style of singing and has really good emotional delivery. Her versatility is also quite good too. Vocal technique is the most important and it needs to be at least decent no matter what, but there are other things that can make you a good or better singer. The only thing Jihyo really lacks is confidence, otherwise she would be a great singer. Nayeon & Jeongyeon would be good, & the rest of twice would be decent if they all had confidence and had continued improving. I hate knetz so much.

I have a few opinions even though no one asked for them:
Currently, there's no popular singer that can match Tori Kelly's tastes for melismas and runs. She doesn't overdo them, she has superb pitch control, and she also somehow manages to intertwine them into the melodies of the song. No one comes close. NO ONE.
Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera have perfect voices for jazz. They should sing more jazz. Their lower-registers while strong as hell, aren't barely used at all in their songs. Christina goes for the strain, and Mariah goes for falsetto. Sing jazz! Keep it low, warm, soft, and jazzy. I would a 100% listen to whatever full jazz albums they release.
Most Kpop "singers" are dancers and performers first, singers second. It's quite hard to find a group or soloist that truly delivers an A-tier performance on every department. The groups and singers that used to belt it out are almost all disbanded, or their popularity doesn't keep rising due to being too skilled when compared to their shiny co-workers. It's a shame, but unfortunately, most of them can't sing. Sorry.

Present-day Mariah whispers far too much for my personal tastes, and while she dabbles every now and then into her lower-register, she sings most of the songs in her whispy falsetto.

My opinion is my opinion, and your opinion is your opinion. I don't get how I'm ignorant for pointing out an obvious observation that a lot of people can see with the records she has put out past the 2000s, specially nowadays-Mariah.
      We're talking about 2021, not the 90s.
How am I wrong in saying "she was the best"? Are you saying is low-hanging fruit? I mean, but it's still true, or is it not? Mariah has been singing for over 30 YEARS! Yes, she's a legend and her music will continue to inspire thousands of singers for years, and touch millions of souls every single day, but her prime days are over. She established herself as one of the best singers of our time, but there's not much she can do now if we compare her to her legendary times.
I never once demeaned her or reduced her to nothing. I simply stated that her current voice would sound amazing in jazz music because she could showcase her robust lower range that she used to display in the 90s. She has acquired more warmth, weight and huskiness that could be perfect for jazz, but instead, she goes for the higher a/o falsetto ranges, which is also true if we listen to the last few albums she has released. If we compare her newer material to her 90s vocal arrangements, we can also hear the lack of lower-register singing in that she used to explode during her prime-days that set her apart even more from her contemporaries. You could say that her lower-register is "barely used" in her songs, unless you count the background singing, the melody adlibs, or the vocal layering; regardless, it's under-utilized, which is a shame because her lower register is almost unmatched.
I hope this provided a clear explanation.

Mariah's transitions, vocal switches & utilization of multiple textures with her vocal agility (and in such a short amount of time) are essentially unparalleled in mainstream music. Oh man TWICE is 🤦🏾🤦🏾🤦🏾. This is a great video cause I have alot of unpopular opinions. Definitely agree that Whitney in her prime was the best belter. The male singers need to get their stuff together. Its so crazy cause back in the day we had Elton John, Luther Vandross, Barry Manilow, Freddy Mercury, Stevie Wonder etc. Now most of the male singers I see that are vocally great are either broadway style or RnB. I haven't seen one in pop music that knocks me off my feet lately. Some of my unpopular opinions would be as far as technique Beyonce probably has the best out of the singers of today. As far as vocal divas; in my opinion none of the singers out here today (mainstream) are on that level of diva status. I feel like the vocal trinity set the bar high when it comes to pop vocal divas. I think the last vocal divas came out around the 2000s (example: Beyonce, Jill Scott, Christina Aguilera, Ledisi, Jennifer Hudson, Jessie J, Jazmine Sullivan). I will give props to Shelea Frazier and Morissette. They have potential. Again great video.

Twice do sing live, especially on their earlier years. However, after multiple fails and then them being attacked by like, every fandom ever, their confidence deteriorated. The lowest point being the I Can't Stop Me era which came after the More & More era, which had the infamous Momo and Tzuyu encores.
Just try watching these encores before the infamous incident.

You can here everyone sing during the Fancy Era.
    th-cam.com/video/2IDgTYm_-Js/w-d-xo.html
You can clearly see them enjoying encore stages during DTNA era. And era's before that. They even sing live on radio shows without bacning vocals. Now the stage you showed was ICSM. That was after the period wherein they were bashed so much, they became frightened of encore stages because they know every mistake will be pinpointed (which is so unfair considering some groups don't even sing live on their encore). Momo, especially, was so bashed to the point where she hides from the camera during encore stages.
I know Twice are not the best vocalists but their concerts show that they can sing.
They are like Mariah where when on live TV, performances are not the best after years of being on the receiving end of hatred. However, when on concerts and tour, wherein they know their true fans are the ones watching, they are at their best state.
I'm not comparing Mariah's vocals to Twice's, just their confidence.
Your opinion about their encore stages is not unpopular, especially now (I mean most encore stages are meh now) but the reasons you gave to justify them are the one that are false. Research more before saying things like they didn't practice too much etc etc. I'm not saying their voices doesn't need work but it's not the main problem, it's their confidence. Watch concert videos!
Of course no one believes they are singing live on ICSM stage you've shown. We know when they are singing live and when they are not, duh.
Again, watch other, especially older videos. Ughh, this is the only time I disagreed on your opinion. And I fucking hate it. The basis on this one was really shallow and not well-read into. Smh.
    Just compare.

yeah I agree, twice should be more professional in encores, nerves shouldn't get the best of them, no matter how much hate they get. And it's interesting with twice cuz they can do 3-4 hour concerts with hard choreos and live singing, but they can't seem to be able to sing an encore without shaking. It's sad, but they need to gain confidence. Also I don't know why they do hard choreos with hard songs if they can sing them live only once or twice, cuz they used to sing live all the time up until 2 years ago. But I also do think they practice their singing, they've definitely improved over the years, and when they sing live with backtrack they seem to do well, but then they do bad in encores. It's literally just a matter of confidence, and not giving hard parts to non vocally proficient members.

    1. I agree with Tori being in the same lane as Mariah in terms of agility coz honestly, the girl is fast af! It's just that Mariah has more dynamics in her voice than Tori coz of the different genres she made in her music.
    2. Mariah is built for studio and she already said that in the past. She loves the process of making and writing songs more than actually performing them live.
    3. Xtina should use more of her agility coz she never lost it, she just tends to oversing in her belts but honestly if she just pull her vocals back to just use short but intricate riffs or runs, she would sound better.
    4. Xtina's natural tone in her belting sounds beautiful and healthier but she would lose her sound and identity if she pulled back to her natural sound without straining (coz I do think she just does it coz ppl recognize it as hers.) Say Something is a great example of her natural sweet and pleasant tone and she should've used that tone more the moment she showcased that in the whole song to reinvent her sound.

Tori has great precision, but her musicality and skill do not compare to Carey’s.

I'm glad you mention Kelly Clarkson & Leona Lewis, especially KC whose techniques shouldn't be ranked inferior to Christina Aguilera's.
I may not agree with the Celine Dion part (of her lacking skills in the upper belts). I think her resonance & support in the upper register is great (her Diva Night show with Aretha Franklin is iconic). Nasal replacement is different from nasality. She's underrated a lot as well, with her piercing resonance, power (as a lyric soprano), agility (speed & complexity) & fluidity in head voice. Listen to more of her ballads & you will know how she's often underrated in those rankings.
I may not agree with Mariah Carey's one either. Listen to some of her mid-90s to 2000s runs & riffs, especially _Lead the Way_ if studios versions count (as you play Tori Kelly's MV here). That's another level.
(P.S. Please listen to her singing _We aren't making love anymore_ with Michael Bolton live in her 20; _Vanishing_ MSG 1993 live show as well, not the more popular SNL rehearsal one)
TK's clarity here actually reminds me of CD's runs. Fast, precise & crystal clear. MC's melismas are always in between her transition which could be airy. That's why her runs are often not "straight" with higher complexity. You have to slow down the clip to catch them up. If we only talk about clean, chesty inflection, Whitney Houston comes to my mind.
Beyoncé is also an expert in this department. I wanna know your thoughts on her.
