It’s rare to see a reactor who doesn’t immediately start ripping into Floch during his breakdown. Him acknowledging it as lament in a time of desperation and fear rather than whining and actually showing some sympathy shows way more maturity than a lot of other reactors these days. Thanks for dropping all 3 at once!!
I always kinda agreed and felt his pain in that moment.
fr and very realistic as many young people go into the army or into service with false hopes and end up with a fate that , to them , could be considered meaningless and i think it's very important to have that mindset shown in its own right instead of it being looked at as whining

As a subordinate there will be many times where you will be given orders from you superior without any explanation behind them and for new recruits especially, this is something that is incredibly terrifying. They’re fresh meat in a horrifying situation, a mission marked by unprecedented carnage, and almost guaranteed failure and they are being expected to place their complete faith in a superior whom they barely have had any time to build trust with.
So Floch’s eventual panic due to
not understanding why the commander kept insisting that they prioritize protecting the horses even when it was almost certain no one was going to be left to even ride them, was very realistic and completely understandable.

this 3 episodes back to back are what made me say "man this is great anime" to "man...this is one of the best TV shows ever wtf?"
and it still got even better in season 4 !!! For me, who has seen, game of thrones, shogun, breaking bad, star wars, mcu, harry potter.. This show is the best thing that's ever seen the light of day. There's absolutely nothing better then this, not even the big 3.
Luckily for you, youre able to binge watch all these episodes. Imagine us having to wait years in between 🤣

I love how deeply you look at this show because I 100000% think it deserves it as a masterpiece.
Two amazing parallels in these episodes:
1) Erwin and Armin ofc but the manner in which they chose to give up their lives specifically-both sacrifice themselves but one has to be told, another has to hide their intent to sacrifice; one clings to their dreams, drunk on them like Kenny said, another seems free of them, capable of relinquishing them
2) Floch and Marlo (MP soldier who joined the scouts) - Floch says every scout probably felt fear as their last emotion; yet Marlo dies with a smile on his face thinking of a girl whom it is implied he loves
Also love the way Hange restraining Mikasa becomes a hug towards the end.
Such perfect and wonderful episodes. And it only gets better :) there really are also a ton of allusions and it will all be much clearer as you go on.

in spite of AoT's amazing soundtrack, Isyama choosing NOT to include ANY in the Midnight Sun episode makes it by far one of the greatest episode ive ever seen. Every scene is so captivating and enthralling in its emotion that, even though having a soundtrack could have elevated the scenes much higher, the Eeriness of the quite space makes it that much more impactful.
I'm not sure of it was his call or not. every episode has its own director. He probably had some input but the final call is usually the episode or project director.
so insane to say that EVEN AFTER these 3 amazing episodes it only gets crazier and more unpredictable
Honestly the combination of Perfect Game and Hero, probably make the best TV show episode of all time. For me this is when AoT went from a good anime to one of the best TV shows of all time. I remember watching it for the first time and really believing it was all over. This is probably the 20th time I've watched it and I still get chills in the spin watching Armin's hero moment. The writing, music, tension & monologues were all perfect. This is when the show peeks and stays this way till the end.
These episodes is what changed the show imo from a great anime to a great show. I remember watching that Levi vs beast titan moment and had to literally pause I was getting so hyped.
What if I told you...that for a significant portion of the fandom, Season 4 Part 2's run equals or goes beyond this run of episodes? Honestly, as someone who considers Midnight Sun the best 23 minutes of storytelling I've ever witnessed, even I'm conflicted on which one is better. And that's the beauty of this story, just when you think it can't get any better, it goes above and beyond. True masterpiece, in every sense of the word.
Season 4 is amazing narratively
i know i even the three ep run in s4 part 1 is amazing
And if we were to count Dawn of Humanity to part 1 special to finale special
Then that is also another trio of masterpiece episodes.

I’m glad you enjoyed these episodes because they are peak anime, prepare yourself emotionally for S4 because you’re about to understand everything that you’ve been asking questions about and it’s going to make you feel waves of different emotions

A brilliant move on Isayama's part. Levi didn't choose Armin over Erwin, he chose that Erwin deserved the peace of death and the story had perfectly set up this to be a reasonable decision for him.
You NEED to react to the soundtracks of this show. Cinema level.
The fact that there was no music in the last Episode, only when Armin was revived..just to feel the intensity of the situation, makes it even better
The shot of eren taking down the colossal titan is one of my favorites in the entire series

So much happened in this sequence. Took a while to take it all in.
This trio (the whole arc really) is like the Rubber Soul, Revolver, and Sgt Pepper of anime, no, of tv. It's one of the few intersections of genuine boundary pushing artistic excellence for all of time, and of overwhelming public favor. Sometimes, only sometimes, things are considered this great because they actually are this fucking great and things will never be the same after.

Finally at peak
LOVE your analysis of the show, I agree that a lot of this part of the show feels like a war movie. Something like Saving Private Ryan. You become attached to the main characters and you get final charges and speeches to rally the troops. This is where I fully fell in love with this whole series.
ive just binge-watched your reactions xD im 42 and i watch anime since 1988. from time to time a gem pops up and stands out shining bright above all others. AOT is one of those. glad to see more people enjoying anime

I've seen a fair bit of anime, these 3 episodes are probably the best I've ever seen.
The ending of episode 18 combined with the outro song "Sayonaraaaaaa" it just makes me cry. Erwin is legendary... this anime is a masterpiece. And yeah you're right when you said this will spoil all other anime for you but not just anime... this goes beyond its genre. My favorite show of all time has been Breaking Bad until I saw Attack on Titan.

JD I was sort of in a similar boat as you, I've seen anime before but not a proper one. I started with Attack on Titan and then Jujutsu Kaisen and branched off from there. They've all been enjoyable, while AoT is probably one of the best, JJK for example is my personal favorite, as you'll see as that series progresses. Love the content! Love the journey!

I'm exstatic you think and feel all of the same things about this show, I was cut to pieces after this "arc" and what you've said along with seeing your eye's glint, tells me you felt the same way. I don't want to say that you've peaked with Attack On Titan but.... you've peaked, there's no two ways about it.. this show is the bollox, nothing else animated or live action gives me the same feeling. Thrilled to see a true G like yourself gettting well into it and not only giving credit where it's due, but the understanding behind the layers of story telling going on here. I could gush all day long about it but anyone this far into the show by now knows, AOT is the GOAT.

my greatest gripe with this arc is the action. when you said you thought eren was bigger compared to the colossal titan, he is. they just animated him significantly smaller to make him seem super small compared to the colossal. another thing is reiner getting his head destroyed twice and surviving, and I also think the way levi just spins of the beast's arm, may be super cool but just doesn't make any sense. obviously still an absolutely amazing arc, but it does things that peeve me

This was also my first anime im 2018 I've rewatched everytime a new season came out. Best show ever hands down
Erwin's struggle for me is top tier and never seen anything like it before or so well done. A commander wrestling with the fact that he has been sending his soldiers to their deaths for so long, and now its his turn. How he struggles with the two opposing motivations for what got him through it, one to beat the titans, but also his personal goal that helped him cope with the guilt, to find the secrets. He was tempted to forsake his duty to pursue his personal goal, but knowing that would be betraying all those he sent to die since they did what he would be refusing to do. It would be easy for a man like Erwin to fall in love with his own legend, to believe he is special and its okay for him to avoid sacrificing himself. In the end though, he does what needs to be done and proves to his fallen comrades that he wasn't just using them. He was one of them.
Every now and then I realise I forget just how good this show is.

Yes this is peak storytelling, this is one of several peaks the AOT story reaches throughout its run. Yes this is a story that is elevated by the anime medium and stands amongst the top tier of available stories to consume within the Anime medium.
The feelings I had when finishing these particular 3 episodes when they aired was a hollow sense of victory. It cost so much was it worth it? Obviously we wanted to win over the great enemies but it wasn’t satisfying and just really sad with a bitter sweet reprieve of getting back Armin.

YMMV but as peak as the writing is in these three episodes there's actually a three piece set in season 4 part 2 which I think managed to top it. 4x19, 4x20, and 4x21. Strong arguments can be made for both trios.
AOT really is the greatest show ever. It’s just so far and away better than any other anime I’ve seen to date. Not just anime too, I’m talking tv series in general. Those people who won’t watch anime because of the stigma have no clue what they are missing. I genuinely feel like sharing this show with people who haven’t seen it is akin to sharing the gospel lol 😆
AOT is amazing, but I do think the original Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and Serial Experiments Lain, are even more amazing. Check them out some time; if you watch LotGH, watch the prequel movie first: My Conquest is the Sea of Stars, followed by Overture to a New War, then start with episode 3 of the series. It's weird, I know, but best way to watch imo. Serial Experiments Lain is only 13 episodes if you wanna try something more concise.
