There's a subtle detail in this episode that you miss if you don't speak Japanese and I thought you would really like to know it. For the entire series, Erwin has referred to himself using the term "watashi" which is how you refer to yourself if you are an important person. But when he sits down with Levi and tells him how he really feels in this episode it's the first time he's referred to himself using the term "ore" which is the normal way of referring to yourself. So his vulnerability in this moment is even expressed in his word choice. It's amazing.

"Watashi" is a formal form when referring to yourself. "Ore" is used in a more casual way.
Erwin use "watashi" because he is a commander and need to address himself and other in a formal manner. He use "ore" because in this scene he talks to Levi not as a commander, but as a friend.
it's more about being formal and "correct" vs being informal and very casual, you're not saying "I'm important" when you use "watashi"
It's formal versus casual, not level of importance. He's talking to Levi as a personal friend. And he addresses the scouts as a commander.
shame on english and other western language that dont have variation of calling people based on fomalities and seniorship. instead of those important stuffs, west language have variation about GENDER. Like.. really?!?

Until this episode, I had never seen any show that actually made me feel so much for side characters that never even had a voice. Erwin’s final speech to them had me wrecked. I felt so bad for them all, and I was honestly scared for them too. A truly incredible episode from a truly incredible show

You were 100% correct in thinking there was some connection to this episode and No Regrets.
In your No Regrets Part 2 Reaction ( th-cam.com/video/DMFXiENLDh4/w-d-xo.html ) Erwin says to Levi "Memories of regret will only dull your future decisions. And then you'll begin to let others make your decisions for you. All that's left for you then is to die."
Then in this episode, Erwin starts to have feelings of regret. Levi says to Erwin "I'm making the choice. Give up on your dream and die." I just think it's amazing that foreshadowing came full circle all the way back from No Regrets. Incredible storytelling. Great reaction and analysis as always, btw.
Isabel and Farlan were also there in the background when Erwin was talking about their fallen comrades

One of the absolute best episodes of Shingeki one of my favorite reactions of yours as well, easily. Its no wonder why it ended up in the top 3 of Imbd because the sense of dread and tension is so palpable its not even funny. Then followed by an incredible payoff at the end I mean my God it made me want to join in on the charge!! Only Erwin Smith could manage to do that, to die alongside that man would be a privilege lmao. Can't wait for the rest of your reactions cause we still got plenty of amazing moments to come!

I've been watching reactions all week waiting for yours. It's really frustrating how, literally, 99% of reactors are like "wow nice episode, let's move on", barely paying attention to all the details. We are really fortunate to have you in the community, the ONLY one who appreciates every single thing, even the smallest details, the only reactor out there who is able to make us relive the episodes like the first time we saw them, and that means a lot man, as cliche as it may be. What frustrates me is people seeing this episode and coming to the conclusion that Erwin is a useless, selfish monster who doesn't care about anything and thank god for Armin... Like it hurts so much. :( So many people seem to have problems with basic comprehension or seeing under the surface.

Yes, I knew this moment was coming and it hit like a truck. "Perfect Game", "Hero" and "Midnight Sun" really are three banger of episodes one after another. Not to mention the last ones.
Erwin's final speech and character ending it's so well done, he finally died putting aside his dream and prioritizing humanity. Hands down one of the best characters of SnK.
Little fun fact about the start of this episode:
the subs (official subs) completely missed Connie's joke. The translation is indeed "Eren's house is eavesdropping!" or "That could be Eren's house!" if I remember correctly, but when Connie says the line, in japanese it sounds just as if he said "That could be Eren's Yeager" (Eren no Yega!) because of the pronunciation, hence the pun and Connie stupid laugh.
In the manga they adapted it has "Eren how does it feel to have your own roof over your head again?" which is kinda smart and funny lol

Great catch of the Japanese pun. "Eren no Iye-ga" sounds like "Eren no Yeager" --> Eren's House is "Eren no Iye". "Eren no Iye ga" adds a question mark at the end.

Erwin and Levi's relationship is most definitely one of my favorites out of the entirety of the show. The amount of respect shown towards one another like you mentioned. Levi getting down on one knee and telling Erwin to lay down his life and die.. I cried as well. Also the music amd willingness of Levi to try and take out the beast Titan himself truly shows his character. The direction this episode was phenomenal as well. The sounds and shots of the bell being destroyed, the colors, that absolutely beautiful shot of Levi overlooking the charge was stunning. I'm so glad you notice these things, and isayamas great story telling and are able to appreciate it just as much. Amazing reaction!
True. I love Levi, Erwin and their relationship so much, I can't even put it in words. Easily my favorite dynamic between two characters of all time.
Let's not be afraid to say it: it's respect and love. Homophobes or 'shiphaters' don't have to be afraid, love can take a million forms. He was Levi's liege and most important person according to Isayama, after all.

Your breakdown of Levis and Erwins relationship literally made me cry. I love them so much.
Actually in No Regrets, Erwin tells Levi that regret will dull his future decisions so that eventually he'll let others make choices for him and all that's left for him then is to die. And I really love the detail that now in this episode, Levi reflects these words on Erwin, saying to him "I'm making the choice. Give up on your dream and die."
Levi and Erwin's convo is one of the greatest things in this series.

It's honestly amazing and tells mountains about how much you understand this series at 8:20. Most people would get emotional at 'Midnight Sun' but I think your understanding of Erwin's character and his feelings, emotions in this moment was so cool to see and sincere. His speech was ... breathtaking. I think another reason you teared up so early was because, since you're so good at reading narratives, you knew this was Erwin's last scene, his final moments. I still hold this as one of the best peaks of AOT storytelling. Loved your reaction!

The entirety of the return to shinganshina arc is full of banger episodes tbh. This arc and the upcoming season 4 is what made me put attack on titan as my favorite show ever

Years later and this is still one of the greatest lines in fiction to me. It applies to everyone, soldiers and civilians alike. Death equalizes us all but we can still act in rebellion against this inevitable horror

oh wow. that's a pretty accurate analysis you got there. the author himself said the same thing; that in that moment Erwin had to stop being the kid following a dream and become the adult humanity's counting on. he just needed someone to give him the final push, and that was Levi telling him to abandon his dream and die

I’m genuinely impressed that you can recall specific episodes so easily. I’ve been watching/reading this tale from the beginning and I can only recall the names/episode numbers of a handful. Good on ya, brother. The ride continues.

It’s really the attention to detail and all of the small subtle things, that make AOT such an incredibly well developed and realized world. In a totally different way than the vast majority of other anime.
I rarely hear reactors mention some of those things but they really flesh out the world and make it’s characters as genuinely human as possible.
2 fantastic examples this episode:
- when Erwin paused for a second in his speech after, “would you say that of our fallen comrades? We’re their lives meaningless?” with his head faced down, and then he visibly takes a deep breath and looks up at the recruits to finish with, “No they weren’t!...”
- the sheer look of terror on Erwin’s face during the charge. Because he knows that he doesn’t have to put on his brave commander act while at the front line, since there’s no one ahead to turn back and see it.
Simple choices in storytelling like that are what set this series apart.
And if you even find those to be good, try watching the video for the OST song Apple Seed. There’s one that someone made and it’s got the scene playing from last episode with Bertholdt, where the OST actually plays and has the lyrics on the screen.
You’ll be AMAZED. The OSTs lyrics match up as an almost perfect reference to what’s going on as it’s playing, line for shot.

The name of love(ed of s3 p2) is very much like the current arc in the manga right now those are my favorites but i don't know if there's more
What makes this show so great is how it naturally evokes so many emotions. If you are in a war you have to have someone to make the ultimate call, even if it means their own life. That's the consequence. The reward is what is on the other side, both for those that live and for those that were going to die. Can't say enough about Erwin. A leader until the end...in speech, in deed and in action.
An amazing episode and an amazing reaction/review. This is the content I live for.

Erwins mindset is what I call perfection. He isn’t afraid to lead his soldiers to death for victory and his own ideals. He gambles it all because he hates to lose and that’s exactly what makes a legendary commander. And people don’t seem to realise how intelligent Erwin is. At the end he gave up on his mentality for the sake of human kind. He knew when to draw the line and to do what was rational for humanity. Absolute perfection of a mentality
"rebel against this cruel world" is an apt way of putting it. This world is out to fuck them. Every human is weak and alone and has little to offer in the grand scheme of things in this world. So even while they rode into hell, helpless to do anything to prevent their own deaths and only benefitting in the form of a distraction, those soldiers fought to the very last second against more than unbeatable odds. Until the last second, they rebelled against this cruel world and spat in the face of unfairness-
Real Men cried
I remember, this season came out around the same time as S8 of GOT, all i can say it THAT is how you do a battle, there are stakes and there are real strategies. Both sides are making good decisions, smart decisions and both coming back with incredible counterattacks. You also feel like there are actual consequences to this battle, you know there will be casualties and losses but also that the winner is going to have an incredible upper hand going forward - Just absolutely fantastic!
Now this is a spectacular performance, direction, writing, and adaptation. AoT hits on a different level. What's crazy, is that Isayama is just getting started.

After Vinland Saga I've been catching up on your Attack on Titan series and it's been a blast.
This episode was as cathartic as I had hoped, maybe more. Commander Erwin Smith is probably the only person that could've gotten me to willingly give up my life,
just to ride to my death beside him. Not to mention he has one of my favorite voice actors with Daisuke Ono. Nothing makes me feel as alive as witnessing these great pieces of storytelling.
If he's so messy at this episode, he will be more messed up Inn the next episode. Hero. The most emotional episode so far.
Midnight Sun was pretty damn rough too.

I just found your reaction series. But this by far is my favorite episode. I love to see i was not alone by having this reaction. Erwin will always be my favorite character. He became a demon because we needed him to be one.

you got the "cruel world" point very well
One of the best AoT episodes, right alongside the next two. Erwin said his dream was more important to him than humanity and now it's just within an arm's reach... And yet he still goes out there and charges ahead, right into certain death. You can see that he's absolutely terrified just like the new recruits but they still don't stop. That scene always gives me chills, one of the coolest scenes in the whole show. I love how well they animated the expressions this episode. Erwin's terrified face and his bittersweet smile when Levi tells him to go ahead with the plan... Speaking of Levi, imagine how hard it was for him to make this decision. He joined the Scouts because of Erwin, he said following him is a decision he'd never regret, he trusts him with his everything... He even threatened him to stay home because he was worried about him dying, and yet, in that moment, he tells him to give up on his lifelong dream and die. And although losing Erwin is a huge blow, it would've been much worse if he stayed home. If it wasn't for him, nobody would've made it back. Nobody. Everything was possible because of all those people's sacrifices. And especially Erwin's. He just had to be there, nobody else could've come up with that insane plan and the recruits wouldn't have followed anyone else to certain death. But there's just something about Erwin that makes you want to trust him and follow him no matter where he goes. He was such an awesome character and this was a perfect heroic ending for him.

This was such a hard-hitting episode for me. Throughout the entire show, Commander Erwin was like a mess of puzzle pieces for me, and without a doubt one of my favorites. His mind is so complicated, and he's one of those people whose morals and actions are really twisted by the world they live in. I think the saying is, "The road to hell is made with good intentions." I think it fits him perfectly, unfortunate as it is.
