Some thoughts I had about the impossible choice that was made this episode: Erwin was the strategist, Armin was the tactician. Erwin was the heart, Armin was the mind. Erwin was the leader, Armin was the dreamer. But most importantly, Erwin was motivated by the past, and Armin was motivated by the future.

Armin said (and multiple others have too) "those who can't sacrifice anything, can't change anything", Erwin letting go of his dream of the basement allowed for humanity being able to take a step forward. Armin letting go of his dream of the sea made it so he was able to defeat the colossal titan. Letting go of what made them a "slave" (like what Kenny says)

Brilliant reaction. I had never so directly examined how the guilt over sending soldiers to their death is tied to his guilt and feelings of responsibility he has over his father's death, and how his charge allows him to forgive himself for both. He deserved to rest.

  • @merdufer
    @merdufer 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

Erwin was driven by his obsession to find the truth. He put on a show and said everything was for humanity, but in the end, he was really sending soldiers to die for his obsession, and it weighed on his conscience. The show sprinkled hints of that throughout multiple seasons, with his conversation with Zachary, his reaction when he found out the titans were people, him seeing himself standing on a mountain of dead soldiers, Kenny's last words to Levi, etc. In the end, Erwin gave up his dream and sacrificed himself so humanity could have a fighting chance, and in death, he was finally freed from his obsession (freedom being the biggest theme of the show). I think Levi was the only one who fully understood that Erwin wouldn't be the same person once he found out the truth.

      @Nioxre 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

i think because he became self-aware at that, and very few protagonists in this genre have that kind of self-reflection unless prompted to by the story. when he said that line it felt like he was thinking on his own, like he was his own person outside of the main plot. and i really appreciate that from eren. it brought him so much more character depth

Hange is one of the best written characters throughout this entire thing as well. How many times has Hange said or done something that would qualify as "abandoning your humanity", and yet still managed to hold onto it?
Everything from how she spoke to Annie about how she was going to interrigate her, to the many, many hard choices she has made in combat situations, to torturing the interior police guys, to her choices regarding Reiner in this episode.
Yet she never loses her humanity the way Bertholt did. It's always in there still, even when she goes full brutality mode like when they fought Kenny's people in the crystal cave.
Ad to that her way of viewing the titans as a scientist, and you got one of the best characters ever.

Erwin in last breath knows they won the battle and even tho he wasn’t able to reach the basement himself he still got to know the truth about their world through his father in the afterlife so Erwin still accomplished his dreams meanwhile Armin wants to see the sea and see more of the world which he hasn’t got to do yet and he wouldn’t be able to explore their world in the afterlife so I think they made the right choice by picking Armin

Your analysis of Bert’s arc is really thought provoking, I never pictured it that way. I saw it as him gaining resolve instead of doubting himself. I figured he did still hold Annie dear to him, he just wasn’t gonna linger on that subject.
But you’ve really made me think about his position compared to everyone else. I think he really was ready to go down a pipeline of thought that had no room for turning back. Kind of what you imagine when you think of a hard military general who knows he’s not doing what’s right for the people, so long as he can survive this hellhole.
But FUCK that’s the thing, this is also about life or death for him and his comrades, it’s hard to say that such commitment is actually evil

To make a defense for Erwin, we have already seen plenty of Armin's capabilities and, although we have not seen the entirety of Erwin's career like Levi and Hange, we have seen a lot of his capabilities in the previous seasons. The only true difference is their experience as not just a strategist, but as a leader. And for the uncertainty of what will come after reaching the land and possible sea beyond the wall, Erwin is a safer choice than Armin. Whatever is the truth that will affect the fate of humanity, we are not sure if we would have the luxury in nurturing Armin's talent that could be equal to or greater than Erwin's. It is simply uncertainty
Also, Erwin is still quite young compared to Pixis (who we also saw as an excellent leader and strategist). He is disabled, but him becoming taking the colossal would make that irrelevant. And I did and still do prefer Armin to live for the sake of the story.

In an episode filled with poignant moments (this whole arc is, really), my personal favorite moment is Eren's plea, where he acknowledges how beautiful Armin's curiosity is, along with the self-awareness to recognize the violent hatred in himself. It's unfortunately prescient, and convincing Levi to choose Armin is ironically one of the last choices he makes while he thinks he's free.
This episode also sets up Floch pretty well for the next arc. We understand now that revenge is his primary motivator, he even says himself that he wants to bring hell to to people he perceives as having sought to harm him. I'd completely forgotten the line about dedicating himself to bringing back the devil. All great narrative storytelling.
For the most heart-breaking moment though, I think Bertholdt perceiving his fate gets that award. Not only does he have the cruel, momentary thought that his friends are going to save him, he also meets the same fate that he left Marco to - the quiet, smart one being eaten by a titan while the people he used to think of as allies stand by a watch, because they think his death is necessary.

You should re-evaluate which would have been the right choice (Erwin vs Armin) after watching the whole show. IMO, the choice was for plot reasons, which undermines plausibility a bit.
    *** SPOILER ***
Later, the Scout Regiment rebuilt under Hange's leadership (with Armin's aid) falters and betrays the command, which would have been unthinkable in Erwin's organization. Recall that during the coup d'etat, not a single scout member fell out of line, because all the scouts trusted Erwin more than their government. They were all willing to lay down their lives for Erwin.

My dear friend, would you be interested in reading and reacting to a Webtoon called Purple Hyacinth?
Its themes are similar to Attack on Titan (forgiveness, redemption, learning to live with guilt, humanity can be beautiful). The artwork is stunning, it has original atmospheric music (and sound design!), it’s set in a pseudo-Victorian era (the wardrobe is gorgeous) and its genre is a very stressful, suspenseful mystery. I honestly think you’d really enjoy it. Not only is the plot very intriguing, the characters and their friendships are very preciously written.

In this conundrum, Erwin is a better choice. He is more experienced, more tactical than Armin, who is just an inexperienced albeit clever and have an eye for the future. Another thing, Armin is selfless, capable of sacrifice himself for his comrades but Erwin? The man is ready to shed his humanity, his dream and himself to become the ultimate evil for the greater cause.
The problem is like what Levi said: You dont order a suffering man to give up his dream and his life to become Hitle and finally find his peace only to just bring him back into this hellish cruel world and to forced him to take on the mantle of evil again

I find it interesting that the only choice for you was Armin. For some reason, I'd thought you'd pick Erwin. I also wanted Armin to live, but objectively speaking, I think Erwin was the pick that makes sense. You could argue that Armin has the potential to be the next Erwin or even better, but he only shone thanks to Erwin. If it was another one of those dumb commanders, Armin wouldn't have had the chance to stand out and share his theories and out-of-the-box ideas. So, in my opinion, Armin's brilliance was also one of Erwin's achievements. You're judging the situation from a fictional pov, saying that Erwin's arc is completed, but Levi is judging it as any human being would; so what if Erwin achieved his goal to see what's in the basement? Does that mean that's it for him? Couldn't he have a new dream or objective afterwards? And I think that Levi is also considering the possibility that the basement wouldn't have all the answers they are seeking, so maybe Erwin's life goal is not achieved after all... Anyways, great stuff, brilliant writing, this was my favourite episode of this season, and somewhere in the top 5 of the whole show.

Doesn’t matter lol he’ll find things out on his own pace, acting like Season 4 doesn’t explain everything anyways.

U tripping if you think armin is more valueble than erwin here. Erwin has the experience and has shown time and time again that he is the BEST guy to make plans and strategize and he IS young i Don't know where that "expiration date" thing you said comes from but armin did do smart things here and there but Erwin ALWAYS had the plans and smarts he has experience and will keep getting more experience it's not just armin that has potential erwin still can get more experience. I don't think its any doubt that Erwin was the better choice for humanity

I think the point he is trying to make, is that choosing Erwin doesn't make sense from a narrative and thematic standpoint. His "expiration date" is actually something that the show directly addresses, referring to the end of Erwin's dream. Erwin is obsessed with finding the answers. With proving his father's theory. He is a a slave to the truth. That's why his ultimate goal is the basement, as it represents the answer to all our questions. So it's fair to say that the basement is also where Erwin's dream ends. And as Kenny said, "Everyone has to be drunk on something to keep pushing forward". That's why the Kenny flashback goes through Levi's mind before choosing Armin. That's why we see the flashback where Erwin says that he has no idea what he will do after they go to the basement. Cause why would he? The basement is everything he wants. After that, he'll have nothing left to pursue. On the other hand, Armin's dream doesn't end with the basement. He wants to see the outside world and whatever lies beyond. His dream will take him much farther than Erwin could ever get with his own. That's what the show tells us and storieswithstyle picked up on that.
This debate was never about "armin better then erwin haha", but rather the fact that it is in line with Erwin's character to die here. We've seen Erwin show incredible guilt for his actions as a commander multiple times and the phrase "dying would be far easier" has been attributed to Erwin's path as a character. He is shackled by his dream and burdened by the overwhelming amount of agency he has over other people's lives. Which is why in his final moments he leaves the choice up to Levi. He makes Levi choose in order to free himself from the burden. "Give up on your dreams and die". Erwin doesn't respond with sadness. Or regret. He responds with a smile and even says "Levi, thank you". I don't think I have to spell everything out for you (even though I basically did), so perhaps you get the point.
The story was written for Erwin to die here. Not because he is "worse" than Armin. But because it was his time to go. And also his time to finally rest.

This part is one that i dont agree with the creator, yes i like Armin, and i know he is a main character. But when you look at what the choice is made BY LEVY that dude is the hand of Erwin, a military member who follow orders. The Comander with years of missions vs a Cadet with 4 MONTHS! working with Levy, remember they call it. I dont like it, maybe make Jean or Eren took the choice and use it. but comming from Levy... idk one of the few desitions i dont agree how was delivered.

Its hard for me to watch this episodes knowing how awful the ending of this anime was. AoT was such a good series and for the author to destroy all the good work he did for years on a couple of final episodes is painful.
And this is not spoiler, i not saying what the ending is, but just my opinion about it.

I would have picked Erwin. seem to be forgetting his feats and how supremely capable he was as a leader and tactician.

He never argues against Erwin's capability. The primary thing that sets Armin apart from Erwin is that Erwin's kinda.. done? He has nothing left to fight for. Armin has the entire world as his dream- the discovery of what is "outside" the walls (literal and metaphorical).
Erwin's dream lies in a dilapidated old basement.
Regardless of how good Erwin is as a commander, what ultimately sent him forward (and what got him to send people to their deaths) was his own selfish ambition.
