Madonna had a cool voice. The production on a lot of her stuff was wanting though. You can legit hear things like the bass falling behind the tempo (along with everything else) and it always takes me out of it.
So much of it is attitude. What she didn’t have in vocal training she had in that.

i think younger people have no idea how controversial, risqué and boundary pushing this woman was in her heyday. Like true revolutionary stuff. And the amount of hits she had, the length of her career and way she influenced popculture is incalculable. i’m not even a madonna stan but I believe in giving credit where credit is due and we would have none of the female popstars of the last 30 years without the trail she blazed.

Right? Listening to her controversial songs now, they sound so conservative. Note that in this song, abortion is completely off the table as something the character would consider doing, and the proposed solution for this pregnancy situation is a shotgun wedding. Similarly, in "Like a Virgin," the best sex is the first time; it isn't obvious in the lyrics, but the video it seems that it is not just the first time, but that it happens on the wedding night. We have "Like a Prayer," which at the time was considered blasphemous, in which the metaphor used for love is religious ecstasy; one wonders why Madonna used St. Martin de Porres in the video (not "black Jesus" - note the Dominican habit) rather than St. Theresa of Avila (well, not really; its clear that the former was used to have an anti-racism message).
She was an accomplished dancer before her music career, and the dad in the video was an amazing actor
Danny Aiello. And yes, he was. My personal favorite role of his was as the chiropractor in Jacob’s Ladder.

In the beginning of the video, and at the end, you can see the Twin Towers in the background. Gives me chills every time I see them in random videos like that.

After this song started playing on MTV, I remember watching an interview one of the VJ's did with a female pro-abortion activist where she complained about the pro-life message of this song.
The late, great Danny Aiello (Moonstruck) played the dad. Alex McArthur was the boyfriend. One of my favorite Madonna songs, besides Get Into The Groove, Live To Tell, and Crazy For You!
A catchy pop song but with clever lyrics and an amazing intro it was loved buy so many people in different ways

Madonna was raised in a large Catholic Italian family and her mother died of cancer when she was young. Her relationship with her dad was very important as you can see in her choosing of this song.

Live to tell, is another one of her best songs. Madonna was awesome in the 80’s. She was it, the queen of pop in the 80’s. It’s crazy how she changed not only her look and style but her music changed drastically as well. Papa don’t preach let us know she could do more then dance pop music.

It goes without saying but that's Danny Aiello, one of the great actors of the '80s who played a prominent part in the Spike Lee movie Do the Right Thing which you two should watch. It was Spike Lee's coming out party.
She initially planned to be a professional dancer & was training in NYC when she started singing w/a group to try to make ends meet; &, the rest, as they say, is history ( it kinda worked out for her)
Madonna back in the day was the very definition of risque, lol! This was the look that had the boys drooling, lol. Brad picking up on that "this could happen to our daughter one day" is truly a man in father mode. You'd never probably think about it otherwise.
My hubby did genealogy of our families.. more than 50 percent were 6 month babies.. long happy marriages all of them. All baby's were loved and spoiled by grandparents.

Madonna came from a large Catholic family (6 children) and was very close to her dad. She was only 5 years old when her mother died. My mother worked for years with her father Tony at General Dynamics and my parents played Bridge with her dad and step mother on weekends. Tony was very proud of her but would get a bit embarrassed when male coworkers would come up to him with risqué pictures of Madonna and ask that he have them autographed by her. You have to understand it was a very different culture back then and Madonna was considered a bit controversial at times. Especially coming from a devote Catholic family. This song clearly expresses both how close she and her dad are as well as them dealing with things that weren’t always indicative of her religious upbringing.

@BloodyJasonMask Definitely. I think that’s true for many artists, regarding pure voice. I sort of compare it to athletes, who typically is at their best from say 20 to 35 or 40 years of age. An artists performance is much more than just the voice of course, but it’s evident for so many artists that sings their old songs that when they’re in their 60s they often have problems with their most demanding songs.

Here in the UK in mid 1980's when this was released it was being talked about all over the media.
Unmarried mothers, abortion etc were hot topics in relation to juvenile delinquency which was a huge issue then and now.
Maybe you mean singers weren't talking about it, but there were many artists covering risqué topics from the 1960's onwards.

I’ve always felt this is more of a call from a daughter… an almost primal need from her, needing her daddy to just love her and help her, not to judge and yell and preach. I don’t know that we ever grow out of that, either. The need for acceptance and love from others ❤️

Some people think this is just a song about choosing “life”. I’ve always thought of it perfectly capturing the teenage idealized vision of the world. When you’re young, you think “we could make it together. We’ll just work, raise our baby, and make family together.” The real lesson is that life is so much harder than that. That’s what the dad knows but she doesn’t. She hasn’t learned the harsh realities of raising children, especially when starting so young. This song sounds so simple but turns out it’s very complex. Gotta love 80s Madonna!

This was really controversial when it came out. It opened up a lot of discussion. I just cared about the musical treatment which was great. Into the Groove and Dress You Up were my favorites by her back then.

I've always loved this song, mostly because of the writing and groove, but the lyrics are pretty deep for a pop song and Madonna did a really good job with the vocals (I'll also admit that whenever see the end of the video, I get a little "misty" 😭). Madonna technically isn't the greatest singer (although she improved over time), but she's very smart and she was motivated and laser-focused early on about how she wanted her career to proceed.
This was a very young Madonna at the beginning her career. Songs like this , I believe, are why some parents didn’t like Madonna. I was a teen when this one was released and I loved it.

This was on the radio all the time and we sang along pretty much just enjoying the music and the beat, and the fact the lyrics were a little risqué! As a teen it was like- I sure don’t want to have that conversation with my dad! The song prob brought awareness to -“you better be careful!”

The brilliant thing about "Papa Don't Preach" is that the lyrics can have multiple interpretations. At its base, the song is about a young woman dating a man her father doesn't approve of. It's also possible that the woman has an unplanned pregnancy with the man she's dating, and there's pressure for her to "give up" the baby via adoption, or even abortion, but she's making the hard decision to keep the baby instead.

The actor Danny Aiello played her father, he was in the films The Protector (1985) with Jackie Chan and The Professional (1994) with Jean Reno, Natalie Portman, and Gary Oldman. Another classic Madonna song. Her "Live To Tell" is another good one.
She should have won the Grammy for this song but the award was given to Barbara Streisand who's music wasn't even on the radio as much as Madonna's song if at all.

That was Madonna. Riskey,edges. While doing a world tour in the 80s. She did a routine on a bed.In Canada, she was told if you do that routine you will be arrested. She did it anyway. Didn't get arrested but I think came close. She did things her way. No matter what other people thought of her.

I had forgotten or never noticed that the bass slaps so hard in this song. The whole way through. Still not a big fan of her music but, can't argue about her talent and success. Her acting wasn't half bad in the few movies she did either.

the video and song were very controversial, but she was praised for bringing this issue to the forfront and making people start talking and doing something about teen pregnancy. Also correction for RobinT Madonnas mother died of cancer when she was only 5 years old
Great reaction! If you're sticking to 80s stuff, I would recommend "Like a Prayer" and "Express Yourself." Very different from her earlier stuff vocally and lyrically. And then 90s is next level.

A cousin 8 years younger than me became pregnant when she was in her early 20s. The male involved told her he wanted no part in the child's life & for her not to expect child support because it was HER fault to have gotten in that mess. She told her parents & her dad stepped up in the most beautiful loving acceptance. My cousin went on to find a wonderful, divorced with two kids, guy who she married & had a son with. That son is now 21/22 & his parents are still together & they are grandparents by his previous children. It CAN work out & it WILL be hard.
