@@faded1146 It isn't. The primary reason Edelgard "gave the dagger back" to Dimitri was to provoke him into killing her. The war would have continued until she was dead. It's actually a pretty fascinating move from her. She basically is entrusting everything to him as the victor. But after playing through her path, I'm quite positive that's what she was doing.
On a side note, this is why people have such different perceptions of these characters based on the routes they played. Different information gives them different opinions.

Edelgard did what morally right. She purposely aimed his shoulder to force him to kill her. She fought for her vision which costed thousands of lives. It would be selfish of her to surrender and have her life spared. She either achieves her goal or lose everything.

There is so much that I love about this cutscene.
    >Dimitri and Edelgard being in the same position that he and Byleth were in during their reunion, showing how he has moved on from his trauma and wants to guide Edelgard through confronting hers.
    >The light shining on both of them signifying the second chance that Edelgard is being given, as well as the contrast with Dimitri's reunion scene showing that he has chosen to walk in the light with Byleth and his friends instead of being a slave to the dead.
    >Edelgard using the very dagger that signified their close relationship in a last ditch effort to kill him, and the pain on Dimitri's face after being stabbed/having to kill her being possibly both physical and emotional.
    >Edelgard's body becoming shrouded in darkness as she falls over, signifying her desicion to stay in that dark path until the end.
    >Byleth guiding Dimitri into the light one last time, pulling him back when he tries to look back into the darkness and essentially telling him that he can't let himself be chained by the past any longer.
    >The voices of all of Fodlan cheering for their savior as he takes those crucial steps into the light and guides them to a brighter future.
All of these things communicated with only one word and incredible cinematography. Some of this is personal inference and others might see it differently, but this feels to me like the perfect example of how to direct a scene in any media.

      @kylepangilinan9075 ปีที่แล้ว +30

This is an old post so sorry for the necromancy, but another subtle interpretation of the dagger attack could be a way of Edelgard telling him that it's time for him to cut his own path for both himself and Fodlan, while her story has to come to an end; by forcing him to kill her, she makes Dimitri stop dwelling on the past and begin looking onward, all while giving him back the very dagger that held significance to both of them.
I love this game so much.

I don’t think she tried to kill him, she just triggered his defensive instinct because surrender was impossible for her. It’s the reason why she chose death, she couldn’t live in a world where her goals were not fulfilled.
I feel like a part of the lyrics from Edge of dawn are specifically for Dimitri:
“Open the door and walk away, never give in to the call of yesterday”
(There is also the sentence “the blue moonlight cuts across our sight as pure and clear as the ringing bell, reaching for us in the night” but this one is obvious)

  • @misspurdy27288

The saddest part is that from before this battle even began, Edelgard’s death is the only ending that would not lead to ruin.
If Edelgard accepted his hand, Dimitri would instantly lose the faith of his people.
If Edelgard won without Byleth she would have nobody to abdicate to and her rule cannot sustain long term due to her being seen as a Tyrant.
So knowing this, Edelgard throws the dagger, but in such a way as to not kill Dimitri (Edelgard could definitely have hit the neck if she wanted to) in order to force his hand and get him to make the right choice. That smile is knowing that her job is done and that she’s succeeded.
But lets not ignore that no matter who wins this fight, Claude will hunt down the CEO of racism.

If you actually played the game and payed the slightest attention to the various routes, it’s clear Edelgard (while possibly mentally broken and likely insane) is still cognizant of, and single-mindedly focused on, her initial goal. Despite Edelgard literally starting a war, trying to take over the world, and killing anybody who stands in her way, Dimitri still extended his hand despite all of the history and darkness of Edelgard. Dimitri is the best lord with the best character arc when played through the BL route. Claude was great too, but not nearly as in depth as Dimitri. @WarrickAuthor 4 ปีที่แล้ว +100

@@verdantmischief7092 first off, I do not give Dimitri's past actions of murder a pass. It is wrong through and through.
I have empathy for Dimitri because he made an effort to change and proved through his actions that he was changing for the betterment of humanity as a whole. While Edelgard didn't ruthlessly slaughter EVERY person, she did slaughter most of them unless they bowed down before her and her power. I have no sympathy for a leader who kills people they disagree with in the name of world betterment. I do not think that Dimitri or Claude fall under that category of leader (based on how the stories are presented) because their killings are reactionary, not proactive. Are you really bettering the world by killing people who are willing to live alongside you, granted they have different beliefs, experiences, and views?
If you knew that I held no hatred in my heart for you, thought positively of you, and was willing to live alongside you (granted I saw the world differently), are you justified if you were to try to kill me? Does the harm that a bad person caused you in your past justify you hurting and potentially killing others in the present/future?
Edit - Honestly, I have a massive bias towards the Blue Lions because I experienced the pain that was caused at the hand of Edelgard. I felt like she betrayed the world for selfish reasons. After rethinking these types of topics, I can always find a way to justify an action. I understand why people think that Edelgard is the most sympathetic/empathetic lord in three houses. I really do. I just don't think that causing harm to innocents and starting a whole war in the name of ideals is good. But that is just me though. Anyone is welcome to disagree.

To the people saying Dimitri is the worst because his plans are stupid Dimitri had it the hardest of the three, yes Edelgard was used to do experiments only because of her crests and that is definitely something hard to go through but Dimitri lost his parents and every one he loved in a brutal incident and was left to the brink of death and then seeing that Edelgard worked with the people that caused the Duscur tragedy he becomes a monster that can only be saved if byleth is by his side. At first he just wants to kill Edelgard but then sees the bigger picture he was the one to end the war and that is something that people don’t seem to get Dimitris route isn’t exactly about killing Edelgard its about ending the war that has brought Fodlan half a decade of suffering and torment. That is the purpose of the Azure Moon.

Dude, use some fucking commas. Also, it’s arguable on wether Dimitri’s is worse seeing as Edelgard not only went through extreme physical torture, but also saw her siblings be tortured and go insane in front of her, which could very well have more psychological impact. However, I’m not gonna argue semantics on that, since that’s all a bit murky, but what I am going to argue is that... no. That’s not why Dimitri fights the war up until Rodrigue dies. After this and a rushed redemption, then it becomes about ending the war, but up until that point azure moon is dealing with Dimitri’s fragile mental state and relative lack of planning and leadership, which means his plans were legitimately stupid, or at the very least egregiously rash and rushed. Not sure what him having it the hardest of the three means in terms of his plans being stupid regardless

Words cannot express how much I love Dimitri. He has done questionable things, yes, but only because of his trauma, from a terrible past that he had done nothing to deserve. All he needed was one warm hand; someone to reach out and give him a little help and guidance. I firmly believe that if Byleth hadn't fallen into a coma and stayed by Dimitri's side, he would've never descended into madness, at least nowhere near as bad as it was by the time of Byleth's return. The second Byleth reached out, Dimitri's condition started to improve (granted it was slower than a snail's crawl at first)
His ideals aren't as grand as Edelgard's or Claude's. But that is part of his appeal in my opinion. Take away his crazed side (which was resolved in his route) and he is basically just a simple man. All he wants is to carry out his duty respectfully, to be a king worthy of his people and not the other way round. A king who is actually *the* most sensitive to lives lost in battle because that's how dear he holds everyone around him. When Claude's and Edelgard's classmates die in routes other than their own, their voicelines convey stuff like "I'm sorry it had to be this way" and "I'll make sure your sacrifice is not in vain". But in GD route during the battle at Gronder Field, Dimitri couldn't bring himself to string any of those parting words. All he could muster was their names, and when it came to Mercedes, his pained grunt broke my heart. Pretty sure they only added to his survivor's guilt, and the souls of the dead he believed he was being haunted by, and that caused his final suicidal dash towards a retreating Edelgard.
I hated Edelgard at first, but watching Dimitri forgive her and attempt, on two occasions, to pursue a future where he and she could walk the same path made me want that more than anything else, too.

However, war is war and she knew she couldn't just acceot Dimitri's hand and act as though nothing happened. At this point, Edelgard needs to die if the fighting is to stop. The way I see this ending, Edelgard smiling at Dimitri shows that she is proud that Dimitri has changed. Once he was a lost soul thirsting for revenge eagerly wanting to kill her, but in the end he guided himself back to the caring Dimitri she once remembered. I myself was deeply sadden in the end we had to kill Edelgard, knowing the past experiences she endured when she was young and the past she had with Dimitri to me she was someone who you once considered a friend (depending on if you got support ranks for her or not) and for Dimitri family.
But at the end when she throws the dagger she is showing you that the Edelgard you think you've known is no longer there. She is an entirely different person than the Edelgard you once remembered her as. A good comparison I have to her is Anakin Skywalker aka Darth Vader. Both characters are remembered as sweet or humble, but drastically change over time, and that memory you had of their past self makes you mournful knowing the person you just witness dying was someone who you remembered as...a dear friend.

Edelgard is the one on her own route who achieves the good, while Dimitiri is the one who remains on the path of revenge. None of the endings are really canonical. So depending on the route, the one in darkness and the choice of house leads the respective leader to the good side. This applies to Edelgard as well as Dimitri.

I don't think Edelgard was trying to kill Dimitri here. I think this was her way of saying "no. I have lost. Kill me so this war can be over".
In Silver Snow and Verdant Wind, Edelgard accepts defeat and lets Byleth execute her with no issue after the chapter is finished. In this chapter, the last thing she would've needed to do after uniting Fodlan (killing the Slithers) is already done. But war doesn't have a happy ending. War is brutal, and every participant loses. Edelgard knows this and knew that her taking Dimitri's hand there would be her cowering from the consequences of her actions.
Edelgard may be the primary antagonist, but mad respect to her for accepting defeat when she's beaten.
