I once heard someone say that the angriest people in the world are optimists, as one myself I've always agreed; and I think Dimitri is a really good example of why that is. When you're always thinking about the way the world should be, you're frequently disappointed by all of it's problems, especially since you know it can be better. Furthermore, seeing bad people make life worse for everyone else and getting away with it is especially frustrating because you blame those people directly for the problems in the world you feel could be fixed easily if it weren't for them. In Dimitri's case he's driven to madness by this constant disappointment because no matter what happens the world will never be the way he wishes it could. Even if he avenges his family he'll never have them back, even if he kills Edelgard and wins the war he'll have at the same time killed a childhood friend he used to care about deeply. He's frustrated by the injustices in the world he knows he can never fix, and so his only coping mechanism is to make the people he blames for these injustices suffer as much as possible, as the closest thing to ending those injustices he can do is making the people responsible for them suffer as much as those they've harmed.

My brother, watching as Dimitri slips into madness: Why is he your favorite? Me, thinking about how I mercilessly pursued Kronya after she killed Jeralt, and how much overkill I did against her and Solon: I just think he's neat.
this is also why I love crimson flower Felix. In this route, He admits that he has become like the boar. He's one of the people (if not the most) who understands Dimitri especially his dark side. He also shows the most emotion in this route :(
I have such a hard time recruiting Felix. It makes sense (and he's an amazing unit), but all his non-AM endings are so miserable, and you can tell how much he regrets his actions.
I still find it funny that Dimitri says something like "I'll tear your limbs of so you will experience intense pain before I finally allow you to die" and the other Blue Lions just stand next to him like "Yup, that's a completely normal thing to say"
Dimitri’s dialogue has that anger that just feels too real to be taken lightly. Legitimately a great descent into madness that should be used as an example for other similar fall from Grace stories
Don't forget Chris Hackney's phenomenal performance. I deadass forgot for a split second on a few occasions that Dimitri was a video game character and not an actual teenager who was actually furious as all hell.
I remember Dedue talking about how the reason Dmitri turned insane is because of how kind-hearted he is, especially to the dead, which really made me like his character overall
In the post-timeskip Dedue says "He has always had too much compassion for the dead and the weak" to be a king, but later he says that "It is also why I choose to follow him".
He does it in his support with Sylvain. "You're out late, Sylvain. Is it safe to assume you've been wildly carousing with women? I'm afraid that behavior simply will not do."
This is personally why Dimitri is my favorite house leader his spiraling decent from a strong optimistic leader to a more fallen hero like structure. It's great how in the game it shows he feels guilty towards those he has killed too since he calls himself a monster it makes me happy Byleth can pull him out of the abyss of his own unresolved truma.
I think it’s important to remember that Dimitri is basically the Hulk. His crest makes him insanely strong, so much so that he breaks things by accident just trying to use them normally. So yeah, dude who can literally rip your head from your shoulders going into the depths of PTSD and insanity is pretty terrifying.
That he so often says he wishes Dedue would talk to him as a friend and equal, yet one of the few times he does so he hits him with a "Who do you think you are?" is...unflattering.
fortunately someone in the comments section pointed out this is a localization/mistranslation problem. Watch the scene again and look at his portrait. It doesnt match his tone of voice. It was meant to be a in a disturbed joking tone its kinda a bit out of character for Dimitri. He never once mistreated dedue so it really doesnt make sense. Dedue dying is even one of the reasons for him going insane.
the localisation is a bit iffy, the og japanese text had him be overly cheery in the two months before the flame emporer reveal. he was actually saying "who are you, my mom?", which is much more light hearted and jokey
God Chris Hackney killed it, he was able to clearly demonstrate the change in Dimitri with his voice, and he has an "insane" voice to rival Robbie Daymond.
very bad ptsd, a dose of psychosis, only really medieval levels of understanding mental health, the world he knows crumbling, the only person who fully understands his pain as well as the last of his family wanting nothing to do with him, and a blood magic canonically capable of giving him superhuman strength? yeah Dimitri was a ticking time bomb. I'm glad in azure moon he begins to recover, but it's sad you don't get that chance on verdant wind
I really am glad there wasn't a $20 "best possible route" DLC for this game like Revelations for Fates. Aside from Claude, you really can only save one of these Lords, and while the Silver Snow/Verdant Wind paths really are better for Fodlan in the long run since you dismantle the dubstep mole people... it always feels like you could have done more. You can save Fodlan, but not Dimitri, who arguably needs salvation more than anyone.
Chris Hackney's performance is off the freaking scales with Dimitri. I remember playing Blue Lions for the first time and actually having to put my switch down because I was getting emotional over seeing Dimitri go from this earnest and hardworking young man to someone who is literally unhinged. Chris Hackney portrays that slow descent to madness so convincingly.
i noticed her/his dialogue choices reflect their personality. There are 2 sides to byleth: the cold responses (ashen demon) & the kinder ones (academy byleth)
Something I dont see anyone talking about in the cutscene though that's amazing is the piano, it's very sporratic and uneven, very well audibly representing Dimitri's rapid mental descent upon seeing the Flame Emperor Unmasked, you can feel that feeling of shock and anger and crazed laughter through the music alone, it's incredible
As a schizophrenic myself I can say that his behavior was pretty spot on for a nice person who is schizophrenic. Growing up I tried to be a nice guy, whilst carrying all problems I had by myself. Eventually it seemed like it was one thing after another. Nothing in my life was going right. I felt like I was losing control of my life. I became irritable and delusional. I started threatening people similar to the way Dimitri did (actually got sent to the school counselor for threatening to tie someone to a ceiling fan by their veins). Until I eventually went completely insane and began hallucinating and could not think straight at all. I became very self-destructive and developed a crazy laugh that sometimes would happen uncontrollably when I was doing something immoral. Eventually, my best friend managed to get through to me and I became a better person. The road was long and hard to try to right the wrongs that I did and it took me a long time to forgive myself. Part of the reason I loved Blue Lions so much was because of how much I could relate to Dimitri. I have a feeling a lot of people who have suffered with mental-illness can relate to him to. Mental-illness can cause people to go into a downward spiral where they are not even themselves anymore and it is hard to get out of that hole.
Glad to see I’m not the only one who relates to Dimitri. The way he processes his grief harkens back to how I processed my own when I was younger. His portrayal of survivor’s guilt is damn near perfect in accuracy.
true! many people often miss that part!! (i put in another compilation because i found its funny) its funny to me because at first, Byleth is the one who wants to charge in. his support ups but he stops you. then they mention duscur, this time its him who wants to go out there lol
That cutscene where Dimitri goes feral and destroys those soldiers - *one of my favorites.* Dimi slays and I always thought it incredible - in a *this man's powerful* kinda way. But *this* reminded me of the conversation he had with Edelgard after and his reaction to entering the Battle of Garreg Mach, and I subsequently remembered *just how terrifying he can be.* Not the guy you want to fight. *At all.* *_Ever._*
Everybody in the comment section acting like Dimitri is a villain but I still think he is the most good of the house leaders, he's just the only one that goes actually insane for a period of time. Despite talking a lot about killing people, Dimitri in the end really had a vision of a world rid of the the rampant murder and injustice that it faced, where the weak and vulnerable were protected. I can see an argument for someone saying Claude is more good, but really Claude's vision is just to change the fabric of society and get people to understand each other, where as Dimitri is a bit more concerned with actually confronting evil forces in the world. (Not to say that Claude isn't interested in that, but Dimitri is also interested in making a more understanding and fair society, particularly for the people of Duscur.) Anyways, glad I played the Blue Lions first. Their campaign is awesome and the stakes in it crank the plot up to 11.
Chris Hackney is just too underated. He did such an amazing job! And it's not even the best of his work here! With timeskip Dimitri, he really gave his all.
Dimitri and Claude shows really well the duality of men, one is just chill and wants to end racism, and the other evolves into a cold blooded psycho to kill hot hitler
they're both amazing characters ❤ Claude is the most chill of the three and the most reasonable. Dimitri, his extreme sense of justice becomes too warped that he kills in cold blood....but at least, in the end he changes his mind and becomes compassionate again (but only in azure moon ☹️)
@DarkEternal6 He wanted to kill Edelgard because she started the war. You can't claim that Claude and Dimitri would have started a bloody war for any reason. And the idea that the sword of the creator would be used for a war when he is literally the smallest territory is dumb. There are hundreds of reasons to use the sword other than an all out war. Don't project Edelgard's ambitions onto them.
Because of byleth's impression at the prologue and the trailers, i thought he was gonna be a villain but he ended up as the tragic hero in his route and my favorite lord. Not your typical prince charming >,< also, can i please get a link or copy of your dimitri & byleth icon???? ;D

This is why I always recruit Felix in every route. The dude is practically the only one who knows what he's talking about.
this is also why I love crimson flower Felix. In this route, He admits that he has become like the boar. He's one of the people (if not the most) who understands Dimitri especially his dark side.
He also shows the most emotion in this route :(
Don't get me started we he engages battle with Dimitri, That conversation was just as unbearable to listen to as Mercedes and Annette.
I have such a hard time recruiting Felix. It makes sense (and he's an amazing unit), but all his non-AM endings are so miserable, and you can tell how much he regrets his actions.

Dimitri : Ok, Edel... I have a question.
Edelgard : Ok well--
Dimitri : That's crazy bro, but I don't remember asking.

Explains why I like him so much, tbh.
So you think Dimitri killed some Empire Younglings during the timeskip.
Maybe if they were thieves, or as he called them, rats.
Fallen hero Eh? *looks at feh*
I love how Dedue is just looking at him like “bruh calm down”.
I'M ALWAYS IN CONTROL PROFESSOR :)
dedue: you seem...unwell
Dimitri: IM SO HAPPY I CAN HARDLY CONTAIN MYSELF :)
same energy as IM COMPLETELY CALM katara
I think it’s important to remember that Dimitri is basically the Hulk. His crest makes him insanely strong, so much so that he breaks things by accident just trying to use them normally. So yeah, dude who can literally rip your head from your shoulders going into the depths of PTSD and insanity is pretty terrifying.
Chris Hackney's the best. That's all.
It was meant to be a in a disturbed joking tone
its kinda a bit out of character for Dimitri. He never once mistreated dedue so it really doesnt make sense. Dedue dying is even one of the reasons for him going insane.
I think the line is less referring to his position as prince, and more dedue telling him to disobey his family.
yeah I wish they hadn't changed the translation on that one.
@@ShinoaKoucho
And Dedue returning is one of the earliest signs that Dimitri's original self is still in there deep down.
the localisation is a bit iffy, the og japanese text had him be overly cheery in the two months before the flame emporer reveal. he was actually saying "who are you, my mom?", which is much more light hearted and jokey

3:21 ok but imagine if he hadn't missed. It was a stationary target, so there was a pretty decent chance of him just ending the game right there
very bad ptsd, a dose of psychosis, only really medieval levels of understanding mental health, the world he knows crumbling, the only person who fully understands his pain as well as the last of his family wanting nothing to do with him, and a blood magic canonically capable of giving him superhuman strength? yeah Dimitri was a ticking time bomb.

I love how one of the response choices is "What is wrong with you?"
i noticed her/his dialogue choices reflect their personality. There are 2 sides to byleth:
the cold responses (ashen demon) & the kinder ones (academy byleth)
This is the type of sweet cute child that behaves good but you shouldnt let any knife on his reach cause he gets stabby.
Byleth "Dimitri, What do you have?"
DImitri "areadbhar!!!!"
Byleth: "NOOOOO!"
He honestly terrifies me but I still love him
Same, and that’s the perfect example for perfect game design…
"I have a headache, but that's just from lack of sleep" Lack of sleep from the voices in your head, Dimitri???
I am so happy you are better now.
And I am so happy that friend of yours helped you. Really, your comment almost made me cry.
Thank you for sharing your story! I'm so glad that the Blue Lions route could speak to you on that level.
Glad to see I’m not the only one who relates to Dimitri. The way he processes his grief harkens back to how I processed my own when I was younger. His portrayal of survivor’s guilt is damn near perfect in accuracy.
At the end, it's funny how he keeps getting cut off.

This poor sweet boi....
(Not to say that Claude isn't interested in that, but Dimitri is also interested in making a more understanding and fair society, particularly for the people of Duscur.)
Anyways, glad I played the Blue Lions first. Their campaign is awesome and the stakes in it crank the plot up to 11.
I love him 💕

Dimitri and Claude shows really well the duality of men, one is just chill and wants to end racism, and the other evolves into a cold blooded psycho to kill hot hitler
they're both amazing characters ❤ Claude is the most chill of the three and the most reasonable. Dimitri, his extreme sense of justice becomes too warped that he kills in cold blood....but at least, in the end he changes his mind and becomes compassionate again (but only in azure moon ☹️)

I mean you’re not wrong
@DarkEternal6 Except that's wrong. Edelgard is the initiator of the war in every single route.
Not your typical prince charming >,<
