- We take a less then Quicklook at the visual quality difference between the new GoPro Hero4 Black, the GoPro Hero4 Silver, and the GoPro Hero 2014 edition (which I often refer as the "Basic" model). We put these cameras head to head to see how they handle in day light, low light, and night conditions across several resolutions such as 4k and reaching up to 120fps. We also test the cameras out under water, see how well the focus level holds up this time around and see what issues we can make pop up.

The Hero 4 black is nicer than the regular hero but it certainly does not look $500 better!

Danny Blocher Only happened in the beginning section. Goes away when I move from that area. Didn't really notice it during the edit process but it's a person talking to me while I was recording. Sorry about that.
Mark, 120fps is going to be noisy compared to 60fps because the ISO is being raised to compensate for the shorter exposure time. I believe the black /silver share the same image sensor and lens which would explain their remarkably similar outputs at matching formats. Thanks for your wonderful comparisons.

Very nice review! One last things that would remove all "silver vs black" doubts for me would be a video quality comparison of both cameras @ 60FPS 1080P. I hope it will be included in your new vids. Overall great work! helped me lean towards the black.
I'll see if I can pick up some stuff if I grab new footage for a dedicated Black vs Silver video but I assume they will be very similar. I think our underwater section does some 60 on 60.

Great video! Really informative! Exactly the kind of info I want to hear before I spend money on a product like this.
The reason why Silver edition has the same video quality as Black on 1080p30fps is because the processor and image sensor are the same for both. Both are running the same Ambarella A9, but frequency on Black edition is a bit higher - that's why it is capable of 4k 30 fps and consumes more power.

I was on the fence about the Hero4 Black but yeah, that 4k stuff is super sharp. Look out for out new video going up soon here. Just having issues getting it to render.
Just to note that when you say 'bit depth' you actually mean 'bit rate'. Bit depth is stuff like 8bit, 10bit, and that represents colour values and the quality of colour capture.

One question: I use my gopro 3+ to make still images out of 1080 video mode with some print screen programs. Because i want to upgrade in gopro 4,which one do you recommend (black, silver) and in what settings. I use it for snowboarding, mtb, surfing and kitesurfing and had some great still images out of videos i took. Thanks and keep up the good work!!
4K still while good aren't the best level of photo quality. With both the Silver and Black you could switch to the mode that takes a photos and records video at the same time.
That being said hard to beat 4k photo stills but the Silver's screen makes doing a lot of things easier.

Great job again! Your comparisons are so professional and accurate :) Can you tell that is the 4 BE's image sharper than 3+ BE's in Full HD in daylight situations and is there more reasons to buy 4 BE than the long exposure photograph mode?

Why haven't you uploaded it in 4K?
Also it sounds like you don't need a SDXC card to record 4K which tells me that there is no high bitrate.
Since you have multiple cams now - have you ever thoufght of filming in (side by side) 3D and uploading it to TH-cam?
Last but not least I want to know if you stillhave to buy the GoPro cameras, or if they send them to you for free.
I wish your friend good luck with paying the medical bills - sadly most of the americans are against a healthcare system like in germany for example.
4K will get it's own dedicated video so I don't overscan videos to match it. That'll come soon.
Hero4 Black writes up to 60Mbs with Protune 4k enabled.
I had planned on filming with the Hero3+ Black with the 3D case but then dropped my original Hero Black in the ocean a week before I got my new one. Need 2 identical cameras with exact settings so your eyes don't get fatigued

I just wondered because you need a SDXC Card for the AS100 to record 50 Mbit/s and now here they can record 60 Mbit/s with a normal class 10 SD Card...

I think the Silver is better (if you do not mind not shooting in the space/memory hungry 4K format), because of its LCD (which makes it ok for everyday use, not just for action), the battery is slightly better and... it's $100 cheaper...

Great review. Question: I'm a skydiver and I like to try and get stills as well as video from one camera. The 3+ black had a mode "simultaneous stills + video" - does the 4? GoPro touts capturing "like 8mp stills" from the 4k Video - but this isn't a true still! and will sacrifice bit rate - perhaps you could compare a still from the video, compared to the photo mode to see what quality difference their is? I'd be very interested in this!

Has 4k at 15fps similar to the Hero3+ Black. Not really 4k usable footage. To much stutter for traditional use.

What do you mean by Color Grade Gopro? Is it a gopro feature on pro tune settings? Or is it something that you do in post production?

It's a setting in ProTune. You have two choices. Flat (which is basically the full spectrum of Black and Whites with now values adjusted) GoPro is the second options which Crunch down those values to a more eye appealing image. So richers Blacks, Brighter Brights, and a good amount of color.
I am looking at getting the Hero (basic) and using a clip mount with the skeleton back door to use it as a body cam. How would the audio be? Would I be able to clearly hear what I was saying and what the people I am talking to were saying?
In the audio section I have the Hero Basic camera with the Skeleton door talking to it. Would sound like that.
I was really hoping the Hero would fare better. It didn't.

1080p, 24fps, ISO 1600, GoPro Color Grade. Wont be amazing but best I've worked with so far.

Hi! I have a question. Could you compare AS 100 and Go pro Silver 4 and Go pro Black4 ... Picture quality is one of many features we should reconsider while buying sport camera (4K in Black4 is great, but it drain battery very quickly). So taking all basic features that sport camera should have: like Battery life, picture stabilization, many recording settings, camera shape, water housing durability..which one of this three will you recommend?

I have as100, but sony support isn't able to send me oredered water housing with flat lens...i am waoting over the month. So I spoke with shop where i have bought camera and i can return it and buy go pro4 silver or black....but is it really worth paying extra money? If yes, which one choose? Black is of course more expensive but you get a lot video options, but those video features drains battery very quickly...in silver you get 3+black with lcd screen. In both, there is no stabilization, no handy wrist remote:( ...but maybe in overall one of go pro camera is still better than as100. Thx for your reply:)
It's a big price difference that's for sure. I'd consider returning now and wait till Thanksgiving if you are in the States for a sale but if not I should have some better impressions in the next day or two.
I didn't plan on doing an all 4 camera comparison but was finding it hard to do 4 or more separate trips for these videos I wanted to do. Anyway hit me up in a day or two. I'll be starting a lot of the edits for these videos starting tomorrow. You should see them trickle out as we go into the weekend.

I'll have some videos up around Saturday (just need to record an underwater part) but for the most part same as last year. Sony has some compelling features and GoPro has some compelling features. Will just come down to which is most important to you and what your budget is.

4k is sharper, H4 Black is faster and offers higher frames per second but personally sounds like you might be looking for something else. H4Black+Batteries+MicroSD card adds up faster. I'd check out the Hero4 Silver has it's LCD screen makes it feel like a really good upgrade to last years Black plus I think it's the funner to use of the 3. There is also some options from the Guys over at Sony and we just threw together a ton of videos this week on them.

Techincally yes. It has the potential to playback footage at a higher resolution while having more FPS. That being said the iPhone6 can do 240fps at 720p. The Hero4 Black can't.So there are cameras that can do better but yeah right now the Hero4 Black does the best at higher resolutions.
Whats up with the audio?
Would the Silver look much sharper at 3:15 with the new firmware update? Would the Silver be almost as sharp as the Black with the new firmware?
Yes, check out our Dive Comparison below. Both cameras are running the post launch patch. It's not as through as this video but gives you a good idea on the quality increase. I should have an update version of this test in a week.

I love my Silver. It's a lot of fun with that LCD screen. Black is awesome but really hoping next years Hero4+ comes with a built in screen too.

What exactly does he mean by "grain"
Grain, noise, artifacting. Basically when the camera is trying to boost the images brightness but individually telling each pixel to go brighter. The video can appear very noisy and seem mosaic or poor.

So it's a New Moon night and the Observatory does this hikes near where I was coming down. I think I had an audience of 40+ people watching me climb down the side of the mountain with an iPhone flash light and weird rig for about 20 minutes. There was a small clap when I reached the bottom.

why would anyone buy a Hero basic, when a Hero 2 is better and they are all over Ebay? All this is well and good. But what percentage of the General Public who buys a Black gonna do or know what you know.....Not many! I know too many that bought the Hero 3+ Black and never use it for it's abilities. There's a new sub-set of users. Ones like you (small percentage) then the rest of us. It's all about having, T-I-M-E.
haha I have no down time. My work days are insane, trust me. But this channel is here to help speed things along for people. Most important thing to a good adventure is not letting the camera take over. My rules personally are 1: No cameras before lunch. (This way everyone warms up and loosens up a bit. Including yourself) 2: Plan a shot or 2 to test out that day. Try something new but again just enjoy the day. Eventually you get comfortable with the new things you try and your edits keep getting better... or something like that ;)
