    I loved the 4k comparison with 2.7k , in a 1080p video

      Not 100% sure if you're being sarcastic but if you are here is a similar response to the 4K in 1080p debate.
      Not all of the modes involved with our production are 4k. The nice thing about 4k in a 1080 environment is you can still showcase all the differences. 4K with a scale 50% will show 100% of the 4K shot in a 1080p window. It'll also demonstrate sub pixel density. So you can split the screen vs another plate and be able to compare the difference. Now if you scale the 4K footage to 100% it showcases very similar to scaling up 200% in a 1080p WITHOUT any quality loss. Since the native footage isn't stretching past 100%, we aren't degrading the footage. It is also a good way to showcase key areas I want viewers attention such as edges or fine detail that is often easy to see through TH-cam's own compression.

      Such a sentences :
      "4K with a scale 50% will show 100% of the 4K shot in a 1080p window..." are simply not true, you see 1/4 of the pixels of the original picture.
      Your picture is downsampled. Your both side looks the same, you see no details.
      Go and buy a 4k display, and watch a 2160p video first , then watch a 1080p one. You really think that there is no quality loss? Are you serious ? If this theory were true, you could be able compare the 4k cameras even lower resolution. 1280x720, or maybe 320x200...why not, you have got 100% of the picture as you said, haven't you ?
      You can't compare 4k or 8k cameras neither with a 1080p downsampled video stream nor on a fullhd 1080p display, because you can't see the details, and that would be the most important to compare. How is this not obvious.

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a few ways you have to look at it.
      Let's start by looking at 4K on a 1080p screen like I've done here. Now what I am doing would be similar to if we have a 1x1 window and I was moving a 4x4 towel behind the window. Our towel has a simple design on it where each 1x1 box is a shade of blue. So we end up have 4 similar blue squares each taking up one corner of the towel. So as I move the towel behind the window without shrinking it, you see some part of all 4 edge's various shades of color. This is how I am displaying 4K in a 1080p window. You see all the information there but it's bigger then the window can show all at once. So no loss in quality just field of view for the time being.
      Now let's say you want to see all 4 of those squares, 100%, all at once. I have the ability to shrink that towel's information down to the 1x1 screen but to do so I have to lose the 4 different shades of blue and form them into 1 new color. (breaking away from window example for a second) Now if we are filming with a real 4k camera, it's capturing more pixels in the same region than compared to a 1080p camera. So more pixel density = more information to work with. So when we scale down the 4K image, YES we are losing 4 shades or color and making them into 1 or 2. Compare this to what a 1080p camera captures natively though and that same 1x1 square only had 1 pixel of information to determine it's color while we had 4 to average out that same space.
      Now I know you're probably on your end of the computer clapping and going "told you so!" but scaling down is non-destructive. Sure watching on a 4K TV will show you all 4 individual pixels but scaling down 4K footage to a 1080p is still a better source file to work with because it offers more information when being scaled down. (Provided the camera isn't cheating to get 4k) Similar to how a photo on your phone looks awesome but when you get it to a bigger computer monitor it might look like garbage all of a sudden. A lot of the rough edges that didn't blend super well together are all of a sudden averaged out and looks better.
      Now if you're watching my 1080p content fullscreen on a 4k tv/monitor, then chances are you're upscaling and that's pretty destructive. The player will make assumptions when duplicating the pixels and that's not going to always be accurate. Now if TH-cam or a new codec could change resolutions and frame rates on the fly, I'd be heaven but it doesn't work that way here nor did it 2+ years ago when I made this video. If our project file was started at to 720p we could still show you all the accurate differences when the footage is at its native 100%. The window is smaller for the large piece of information behind it but the data doesn't change. I could scale it down to fit the frame but our pixels start to average multiple shades of color into 1 shade.
      Feel free to call out whatever grammar mistakes you find. I don't think it's the best way to go back and forth on this though but I am also too lazy to put the time into many snarky insults on TH-cam. That being said, you aren't the first person to express they want 4K raw content in both TH-cam or download form. I've started doing that a lot more in 2016 so viewers like you can download/stream the videos and come your own conclusions. I might have taken your comment a little too personally but it is more feedback asking for 4k content. So despite my night being spent writing this reply, thanks for taking the time to leave feedback. No sarcasm.

      You phrase the things in bit overcomplicated way. Paragraph 1 with towels is a simple zooming in.
      Paragraph 2-3 with 4 shades of blue to a new blue, this is a kind of comression method. If you think this is the best compression, I won't argue, you can have your own opinion about compressions. But a compressed image is not the camera's own image (also compressed though).
      I think you lost in wood of principles, and you overcomplicate the things. Actually your own youtube video is the best proof.
      You know if I watch a 3840x2160p video and then a 2704x1524 video (on a 4k display), I can perceive the substantial difference. This is not so surprising, the difference is almost the same as 1080p compared to 720p.
      What can we see on the above video : we can't make difference between 4k and 2.7k picture, both looks the same. The cameras both give an excellent 1080p quality, but indistinguishable picture. The left side is not more detailed at all ( 4:30 ) , than the right side. And actually this is the expected result. Do not overcomplicate it with silly principles. We don't need to buy 4k camera because its the same as a 2.7k. But then we don't want 2.7k because it must be the same as 2k. So on. This is what your video could prove. This is why this test is not perfect (that was sarcasm again) And I don't understand one more thing. You could upload 2160p30 video. Why do you choose 1080p to show the quality of a 4k camera ? And you are mistaken, I didn't insult you, this is criticism, not the same, don't take it personally. I didn't call any grammar error neither, probably I have more, I'm not a native English speaking.

      MarkHawkCam Without a computer that can handle 4k or even 2.7k, I cant convince myself that the Black is worth the extra cash. I hope to replace the 2009 MB Pro sometime next year, but manual setting and long exposure are calling my name! We love our 3+ BE but it really seems like I wouldnt be missing out on anything usable by going with the 4 Silver. Thanks for putting these videos together. Let me know if youre ever shooting in or around Laguna. We might even be able to send the new Heros up on a drone if youve got a video idea for that. I covered a lot of these topics in our Hero4 Comparison. The issue while diving with the Hero3 Dual case and 2 different cameras is we are locked into the settings we added when we were out of water. After 3-4 dives we are out of time. But I will try and cover some of these things in later videos. It's just tougher in water and would recommend out Hero4 Comprehensive Comparison if you haven't seen it.

    Great video. Perosnally I never feel a gopro is a good choice in the low light difficult condition of Scuba - you want a bigger sensor. Sure you can add a lighting system but with the cost and size may as well use a bigger camera. Is the 4 vs 3+ coming along Mark? Really interested to see the video stills capture vs photo mode on the 4+ also!

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Now that most of the AZ1 and AS100 stuff is filmed my attention can go back to some Hero3+ Comparisons. Hoping it should show up next week.
      Also low light will always be the small sensor's biggest enemy. I don't disagree with you that something like a Canon 5D Mark III would be amazing but the idea of that flooding or something going wrong can get in the way of just enjoying the experience. The biggest mistake when filming events with friends is letting the camera get in the way to much. Made up a set of rules to avoid this sometime ago but man, if I brought a DSLR to an event like this it suddenly starts to hold this whole new weight over mny head during the adventure. idk. Different discussion I guess.

    I really couldn't tell the difference, except with the saturation of the bag. With over an $100 difference, is the hero4 black worth the extra money?I will generally be using it for diving, dirt bike riding, sky diving, hiking, snow boarding etc. and therefore want the video to be sharp and focused. I'm not too worried about capturing pictures, but having said that I'd prefer one with a touch screen (not one of the session cams). What would you guys recommend? Or would it be better to just go straight for the hero5 black?

    Great video. What about using Go Pro Silver 4 screen underwater? I know that it is possible to use touch funcionality only with special back door down to 10 feet - which I actually dont' care much. My question is - if it is possible at all to turn off and on the screen undewater (not to keep it turned on for whole dive - to save battery). I know that camera have special button on the back to turn the screen on but the underwater case seems to not have any coresponding sealed button at the back (at least at the photos).

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no backdoor that interacts with that button. You can only set timers for how long the screen will stay on once the cameras been powered up. Other then tapping the screen awake with the low depth case you're out of luck I'm afraid.

      MarkHawkCam Thanks for reply! Does it mean that if I want to use screen to check what is in my frame I am only able to set screen to stay on for example for maxium time and every time I'll power up camera underwater then I'll be able to see what I am shooting? What is the maximum time I can set the screen to be awake after turning camera on? When choosing Silver than Black I thought that the goal is to be able to see what I am filming :)

    Do you think, I must use a Red filter ?. I red also that the image quality will decrease when you use this filters. Do you any experience with filters ?

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not a huge amount. For pretty clear water I would avoid a filter. Might ruin your footage. For Teal water you'd want a magenta filter but for deep blue waters you'd want to use a Red filter. I think the trade off in color eliminates any issues with quality loss. It's pretty minimal but my experience with underwater footage is too.

      I would highly recommend picking up some of these solar power USB chargers you can strap onto your back pack. Other then that you are looking at sub 1 hour for 4k and around 1.20 to 1.30 hours for 1080p. However the power save mode will help it last for 6-7 hours of on again off again shooting (maybe 3-4 for 4k)

      +megasif You get a 3-way pivot arm, 1 flat adhesive mount, 1 curved adhesive mount, 1 battery, 1 waterproof housing, J-arm mount, normal mount, camera, manual, 1-2 mounting screws, and mount lock.
      You need to pickup a Micro SD card yourself. I suggest the Lexar 633x series.

    Hi, this is a great comparison,thanks.here is my question: I shoot 1080p at 24 fps mostly and sometimes higher fps for smooth slow motion (hero3+black).From your experience with black and silver 4 editions are there any noticable differences at image quality at these resolution?The sharpness is the same? (from ytube videos i dont see much difference).thanks again

    Are you utilizing the dive housing as well? Or do the latest models not require it with their flat lense?

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Flat lens is a must. Both the Dive and Normal case that ships with the 4 uses a flat lens. The Hero4 special Dive case uses the Hero3 designed cases which offers better pressure support at deeper depths. If you are short on cash, I suggest picking up the Hero3 cases new (avoid used just to have know your seal is solid and not worn/neglected) off Amazon if you want best peace of mind on your dives.

    • @benthon368
      @benthon368 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      MarkHawkCam Thanks! I bought the Hero4 Silver, but wasn't sure if the only advantage on the dive housing versus standard was now depth, as previously it was a huge upgrade due to the flat lens.

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd personally got 1440p 30fps. 30fps allows a lot of extra light to enter the camera but still doesn't it down so slow that you get a lot of motion blur. 1440p allows you to have some extra field of view at the top and bottom of the frame so you don't miss capturing something on film. You can always choose to crop it down to 1080p later and not lose any quality.

    Hey Mark, thank you for the comparison! It looks like the 4 is much smoother than the 3+, but I haven't found any info about built in stabilization for either. Was the 4 somehow shock mounted, or is there another reason that it's footage is so much smoother?

    @Sa Mo Your privacy settings are setup in a way where I can't respond to you directly. I don't know what the exact laws here are in California but the group of Divers that I lend our GoPro to are just diving and practicing with that lift bag. The Spear divers are with another group I believe but can't confirm. I believe the group involved with this video is just students / others looking to improve their diving skills. Sorry if that's not 100% helpful but it's about all the facts I have.

    Why aren't you comparing 1080p Black at 120fps and Silver at 60fps? Throughout the video the image quality like you said is almost unnoticeable between the two. Won't the difference between frame rate capability make a difference in quality?

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Didn't go over this because I went over this a bit 2 other videos. There is a notable loss in quality when you go to 120fps plus if you're in a low light situation you lose a lot of light at 120fps. But bottom line is I was limited to 3 dives this day. We could only change the settings when we got out of water with the rig I had setup.

    which choice is better , 1080p 60fps with super view or 1080p with 120fps ?

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +mohammadkwt Kind of depends on what you want. The higher the frame rate the more the quality dips in a few way. It's very subtle though, so don't let that stop you from using it. I'd suggest starting with 1080p 60fps (1440p 60fps if you get the Black). Superview is good for tight spaces or shallow depth of field. So if you were in a tight space or had the camera facing you, but you wanted to get the environment in there as well, SuperView could be cool. 120fps could drain the battery faster and degrade the footage a bit but if you want super slow motion later, you'd want to film at 120fps.

      dylan That's correct as the project was edited in 30fps. 30fps is a big part of this feature 2 mins and 30 seconds in. The 60fps sections are converted to playback 30fps to showcase the quality you'll achieve recording at that frame rate in these conditions. I also believe at the time this was upload, 60fps wasn't a native option any users could display on TH-cam.

    So really if you bought an LCD BacPac for the Black edition, it would cost you a total of $579 compared to the $399 of the Silver. This is a $180 difference!

    • @MarkHawkCam

      Heat sinks are the reason you can't have the LCD screen on the black. 4K produces a lot of heat. Battery tech needs to get better or we need to accept bigger cameras. Image sensor is the current reason the Hero4 cant do 240p but possible with a better sensor.

    I think the Silver is better (if you do not mind not shooting in the space/memory hungry 4K format), because of its LCD (which makes it ok for everyday use, not just for action), the battery is slightly better and... it's $100 cheaper...
    When I was choosing between the 2, I found this article quite helpful:

    Hope it helps...

      After weeks of using both, I have more fun with the Silver. Black is better but that screen makes a huge difference.

    Silver is much better, you can't even see 4K on TH-cam without a 4K monitor which are pretty scarcely used anyway.

    if you cross your eyes at the split-screen you have 3d for poor

      +Kalle1854 Filmed using the GoPro 3D case. In theory on the right tv, you can enable 3D mode for this to work but it'll strain your eyes because its not 100% proper 3d filming technique.

      Ah but the 4K looks so good! But the Silver is a lot of fun. You can also turn the screen on under water by pressing the button on the side and it can stay on for 1-3 mins. Really good way to check framing from time to time.
