Aside from the Lightning’s miscalibration for the BMS and complete failure to pay attention to the correct Superchargers, the Ford crew is having the absolute easiest time of it.

I think the answer to that question comes down to human factors. The best road trip experience is not the fastest one, but one where the needs of the car and the human are aligned. That is, when you are tired and need to go to the bathroom, that is when the car needs charging, and when you're hungry, that matches the point in the trip where you need a deep charge. And, conversely, when you're refreshed and have the energy to drive a long time without stopping, the car also has enough charge in its battery to be able to drive a long time without stopping. Because every human has different needs, there is no one answer to the question of whether it's better to have more shorter stops or fewer longer ones. It all depends on the people, and even the same person, it might very depending on how tired you are that day, and what time of day you are getting out (which influences how the charge times will align with meal times). I personally like the pattern of going 200 miles on the first leg of each day, with 100-mile stints for each segment thereafter. On my most recent trip, I did followed this pattern as much as I could, but I had one section where, due to lack of charging infrastructure, I had no choice but to charge to 100% and cover 175 miles without a charge stop. Yet, my body still needed bathroom and rest breaks, and I found myself stopping multiple times on this stretch anyway, even though I wasn't charging.
@@ab-tf5fl I've heard that perspective about more, shorter stops echoed a lot more frequently in the last 5 years, and it makes me wonder whether it isn't more about people adjusting their expectations to match the needs of the car. To me, that's still being tethered to the charging infrastructure, and it's very much a Tesla-specific experience/perspective. Yes, people in the past sometimes made a half dozen stops in a 175-mile stretch, but that was because they wanted or needed to. The car's needs never really factored in. Heck, I still do that in my Bolt EV today, but those extra stops are almost never about charging. Those short stops are definitely welcome sometimes, but they shouldn't be every stop. And in this case, it's showing a real weakness on the part of the Cybertruck. Assuming the Silverado Team can find full-power charging (which appears to look unlikely on this trip), a 10-min stop in either truck will produce the same results in terms of adding range. The difference is, if the Silverado stays for 20 or even 30 minutes, it is doubling or tripling its gains, while the Cybertruck starts suffering from serious diminishing returns. So regardless of your personal preference, the Silverado works fine for either. The Cybertruck on the other hand only really shines for those who want to make numerous short stops.
@@ab-tf5fl i partially agree and would correct it with, the car needs have to align with human needs, not the other way around, and that's why gas car are still very popular.
Agreed. I think all participants and especially Kyle are failing to factor in just how much time it takes exiting the highway. It's usually better to do fewer but longer duration charging stops, as long as the charging speed doesn't tank that much. I guess my view is a little bit skewed driving the Kia EV6 where I can charge pretty fast up to 90%... ⚡
@@ArtiePenguin1 Yeah. I think Kyle's strategy is sound if all you're trying to do is make it to your destination as quickly as possible. The Cybertruck can maintain an average charging speed of 240 kW if you stay between 0% and 40%. The Silverado 4WT should average ~250 kW from 0% to 80%, so the 3WT (assuming they can find chargers working at full power) should average ~210 kW from 0% to 80%. So in terms of average charging power, Kyle's team can beat the Silverado EV 3WT by making about three to four times as may stops in the Cybertruck, so the question is whether they can take a quarter of the time to get to charger, activate it, and get back on the road again.
What I’m learning is don’t be on Kyle’s team. He’s not the nicest and complains when he’s not “winning”. Bends the rules for his benefit but complains that the others drive too fast. Insightful
So cool! We did a 1000km with a Tesla Model Y LR through 5 different countries in Europe and it was super easy. Love EVs! Thanks to this channel I am very unstressed traveling with an EV.
I think they nailed when they said they were the most comfortable lol. Pretty much why I got one, never really in a hurry and for daily driver the truck is amazing. But yes will not win any races or off road or towing or software or … 😂 but access to Tesla SC is still a game changer for road trips!
@@MarcB707Lightning is an incredible machine, it’s just held back by the slower charging at the bottom end. 450A at 10% means they’re only getting 150kW which is painfully slow against 215-250kW that the Rivian and CT are getting. The Silverado would be running away with it already if they could actually get fast charging.
Stopping every 45-60 minutes to “optimize charging” is exactly why a lot of people wouldn’t use an EV for a long trip. I’d love to see a race between the most efficient Tesla, and the new Prius. Break down both time, and cost difference
@@e2dub Yeah! And be sure to include the carbon footprint of building the car too! How much CO2 was burned mining and refining the lithium and where what source is used to produce the electricity
You don't need to optimize charging on a long trip. This is a race. Watch the optimization that goes into a cannonball run. ICE car drivers aren't doing that on road trips.
Lol, the ford guys were just not motivated to be as efficient and optimized as possible... that being said it looks like they had a pretty relaxed and fun ride
I am about to by my first BEV and I could never road trip with Kyle. His style and attitude on these trips is the antithesis of what would make a good road trip. I found out of spec looking for people talking about their BEV. I'm morbidly curious in a horrified way every one of these races I've been watching the last two weeks.
I was thinking the same thing. They should have had one gas Ford F-150 or Silverado just to compare time, convenience, and money spent on charging/filling up on gas.
They should make a video about filling up when not on a road trip, which is 90%+ of most driving. See how many trips to the gas station the gas team makes vs. the EV team makes during a month. Then add up all the minutes the gas team spent at the pump that month vs. how much time the EV team spends plugging in in their garage over that same month.
@@philb5593 EVs have zero range anxiety. ICE have a lot of range anxiety. I have never walked out to my Tesla and had to ask myself if a 1/16th tank of energy would be enough to get to work or if I need to be a few minutes late again to fill up. Millions of people face that question daily driving an ICE. On another note, what if you owned a company? You towed a TM3 on a trailer every day. It was a long haul. 800 miles. Would you pay $50k on a new ICE and then spend $233 a day in fuel? Or would you spend $70k on an EV and then $150 on electricity, with an hour refuel time? In 2 years the ICE costs $60,500 in fuel and $14,500 in truck payments and $1200 in maintenance? $75,200 In 2 years the EV costs $48,000 in fuel and time and $20,000 in payments and $200 in maintenance? $68,200 It is just math. Paying the worker $35/hr to drive seems nice.
1:08:00 I knew it! That's what I said in the first one, cooling the jacket of the plug will only cool the sensor and the contacts will burn hot, hopefully others won't follow your example. THAT WOULD BE STUPID!
There needs to be more video from the Rivian crew, I am definitely pulling for them. If this was a mystery movie, then I would say the filmmakers are keeping silent on the Rivian group, because they will surprise everyone and come out of nowhere and win the race.
If you are playing to win, ride with Kyle, but expect to be pushing the envelope all the time. If you are going for comfort, ride with Dave, but don't expect to win. Based on their personalities, that is not a surprise at all! Fun race.
Yeah their charging strategy really makes no sense. They got explicitly told at the start to always charge to 80% so they could get more power at higher voltages with the boost but I guess they kinda forgot on the way :D But they are getting the best food so at least thats something
Nobody has explained to them that the 120kW plateau to 80% means they’d be charging way faster than they can burn it off on the drives between charges.
Yup. Fewer but longer duration charging stops are better because you save time not having to exit the highway. All the teams are failing to account for this. I drive a Kia EV6 and it charges really fast up to 90% ⚡ I frequently find myself over charging but in turn I have extra buffer
@@ArtiePenguin1 road trip charging stops in my MME are usually 20-25 mins, 10 mins if I’m rushing. Because the MME is so slow, this only gets me 40-50% back, tops. It’d be nice to have the EGMP performance of getting back to over 80% without hardly trying.
@@anthonyc8499 Mostly due to charging performance (and how much I road trip), I'd never buy a non 800-volt vehicle. The 800-volt architecture is just far more efficient. Yep, I love watching these road trips whether it’s Kyle with or without Alyssa or Jordan. I’ve also learned about EVs and bought a four year i3S this year with low miles and a van for my business. One has a 42 kWh battery and the other 50. I live in the uk so it’s colder and wet so I drive efficiently and my real world range and miles per kWh are my variable metrics. I’ve been known to draft other vehicles driving at 60mph and I can feel the effect it has on wind resistance. I love the nuanced thinking. Racing like Kyle is fun (for him and me) but it’s hardly establishing the comparative efficiency credentials of vehicles when he adopts these ‘hacks’ and strategies to win. Still love watching these road trips vids so I guess that’s the real mission. 👍
For Kyle this is safe, & good driving. I saw a video of his not too long ago with him, & his wife (he was driving, & his wife was in the front passenger seat -- he made a left turn on red traffic light across a 8 lane route. 😂. 1:27:29 Seriously? Exactly how many different ways and times have Kyle and Tom tried to explain to Dave that there is no benefit to unplugging the Lightning before 80%? The Lightning was never going to win this race but I can’t help feeling it would have done a lot better if Dave hadn’t been consistently trying to “optimize” where there was no optimization to be had. All he had to do was charge to 80% and drive as far as the truck would go and charge again. Rinse, repeat. He’s the Josh McDaniels of EV racing. Just constantly overthinking simple situations and ending up worse off than if he had just gone with the obvious strategy.
You guys driving through Beaumont brings back memories. I lived in that area for decades. I'm really sad you didn't show the big sign right before Orange. Beaumont 4 miles. El Paso 857 miles.
What's the trick for getting some good shuteye while people are still chatting up front in a race like this? Noise cancelling headphones/earbuds? Ear plugs? I've obviously fell asleep in cars before but I don't know if I could get a solid 6 hours required to stay alert enough for a road trip. I guess if you all are rotating every 4 hours or so little naps will be enough to recharge while over the course of the trip.
Thanks for this series. Unfortunately the longer I watch the more you guys are convincing me to drive one of my ICE vehicle, instead of my EV, on my next long trip. Thanks for the virtual experience. ;-)

I can’t wait for part 3 😂😂
Next Thursday!
Really!!!
Kyle’s team has had to run stop signs, cut lines, go over curbs, running a red light to get an advantage!
To be fair.... that is also their normal driving style. Just now it is on video. ;)
do whatever you have to do to win, haha lol
I respect the food stops by team F-150
What I’m learning is don’t be on Kyle’s team. He’s not the nicest and complains when he’s not “winning”. Bends the rules for his benefit but complains that the others drive too fast. Insightful
Dinners, Dave and F150 Lightnings!!
Just love the passion they show in their videos
So cool! We did a 1000km with a Tesla Model Y LR through 5 different countries in Europe and it was super easy. Love EVs! Thanks to this channel I am very unstressed traveling with an EV.
The F150 definitely isn't playing to win. They're just going for the participation trophy
I don't think the Lightning even had a chance due to its charging curve.
They are just enjoying the ride…..
I think they nailed when they said they were the most comfortable lol. Pretty much why I got one, never really in a hurry and for daily driver the truck is amazing. But yes will not win any races or off road or towing or software or … 😂 but access to Tesla SC is still a game changer for road trips!
@@MarcB707it just works 😂 I love the lightning the most honestly it's the legacy truck. Actually the only real truck there
@@MarcB707Lightning is an incredible machine, it’s just held back by the slower charging at the bottom end. 450A at 10% means they’re only getting 150kW which is painfully slow against 215-250kW that the Rivian and CT are getting. The Silverado would be running away with it already if they could actually get fast charging.
f150 team is just chilling. i love it
Stopping every 45-60 minutes to “optimize charging” is exactly why a lot of people wouldn’t use an EV for a long trip. I’d love to see a race between the most efficient Tesla, and the new Prius. Break down both time, and cost difference
And carbon footprint
@@e2dub Yeah! And be sure to include the carbon footprint of building the car too! How much CO2 was burned mining and refining the lithium and where what source is used to produce the electricity
You don't need to optimize charging on a long trip. This is a race. Watch the optimization that goes into a cannonball run. ICE car drivers aren't doing that on road trips.
Lol, the ford guys were just not motivated to be as efficient and optimized as possible... that being said it looks like they had a pretty relaxed and fun ride
Ok... I was wrong about that.
All all for Team Ford doing Food Reviews Across America at this point, lol
“Where the bananas go?”
“And I’m gonna need a few more excedrin.”
I am about to by my first BEV and I could never road trip with Kyle. His style and attitude on these trips is the antithesis of what would make a good road trip. I found out of spec looking for people talking about their BEV. I'm morbidly curious in a horrified way every one of these races I've been watching the last two weeks.
Loving that lightning team! Very good cliffhanger at the end. Can’t wait until next week
It is amazing how different each team is for this race. Really makes these videos so interesting.
You should have also had a Gas vehicle team just for a comparison lol
I was thinking the same thing. They should have had one gas Ford F-150 or Silverado just to compare time, convenience, and money spent on charging/filling up on gas.
They should make a video about filling up when not on a road trip, which is 90%+ of most driving. See how many trips to the gas station the gas team makes vs. the EV team makes during a month. Then add up all the minutes the gas team spent at the pump that month vs. how much time the EV team spends plugging in in their garage over that same month.
Complete the trip 10 hours faster than the competition probably. Zero range anxiety/planning of stops.
@@fernando.estrellaor the pickup on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, the Ram 1500 ecodiesel. Would only need to fuel 3 times.😅
In 2 years the EV costs $48,000 in fuel and time and $20,000 in payments and $200 in maintenance? $68,200
It is just math. Paying the worker $35/hr to drive seems nice.
The saga continues!
i know that thays cool by the way
Remind me to never take a road trip with Kyle.
He acts that way when he isn’t in a race just driving with Alyssa he push push pushes .
Out of Spec Dave's Fast foods across America
Now that’s an idea!
1:08:00 I knew it! That's what I said in the first one, cooling the jacket of the plug will only cool the sensor and the contacts will burn hot, hopefully others won't follow your example. THAT WOULD BE STUPID!
Shout out from Beaumont TX, we just got our very own SC recently, glad you stopped by!
Team Dave for the Food tour
There needs to be more video from the Rivian crew, I am definitely pulling for them. If this was a mystery movie, then I would say the filmmakers are keeping silent on the Rivian group, because they will surprise everyone and come out of nowhere and win the race.
If you are playing to win, ride with Kyle, but expect to be pushing the envelope all the time. If you are going for comfort, ride with Dave, but don't expect to win. Based on their personalities, that is not a surprise at all! Fun race.
Really doing the Lightning a disservice by not charging to 80% at each stop. Signed, a Lightning owner.
Yeah their charging strategy really makes no sense. They got explicitly told at the start to always charge to 80% so they could get more power at higher voltages with the boost but I guess they kinda forgot on the way :D
But they are getting the best food so at least thats something
I've seen only 1% or less battery degradation and I've charged my EV6 to 100% for about 3-4 months continuously in its first 14 months of ownership. I've driven about 35,000 miles so far.
I'll have more in-depth videos about my EV6 coming to my channel soon, so consider checking it out and getting subscribed⚡
I’m hoarse from screaming at Dave ‘close the charging door’ lol
New drinking game -you have to do a shot every time Kyle says “rip”
That man never stops talking.
Don’t forget “spicy.”
Every time he points out a car....
Optimized
15:30 The Coen Brothers made No Country For Old Men.
Awesome movie.
As someone asked, please put the truck / team name on the screen to make it easier to follow with all the cutting to and fro.
Pro tip from a Nissan Leaf owner.... When you guys are rolling with no heat, put the defrost on cold, with the fan speed on low. The little bit of air movement will be enough to keep you from fogging up. I run this way all winter long... because I HAVE TO 😂😂😂
Surprisingly good fun , really enjoying the banter and energy , of the race. Kyle for sure is in true race mode. Im seceretly following the f 150 team , just like that truck , but the Cybertruck is growing on me.
That ending though 😮
Also never underestimate Kyle’s competitiveness
Next time you should be limited to using the onboard navigation for charging stop planning, like regular customers would do :)
I've been waiting for this checking every day!
5:20 This is exactly the reason why I say drive 60, not 80.
It is much more efficient, which outweighs the extra charging time, hassle, and extra stops.
In a way, you guys are truly illustrating the nightmare of "Range Manxiety" (suggested archive subtitle for this Video).
Pulling for team Rivian!
Does Kyle also talk in his sleep? ;-)
This is more interesting than a F1 race 😁
For Kyle this is safe, & good driving. I saw a video of his not too long ago with him, & his wife (he was driving, & his wife was in the front passenger seat -- he made a left turn on red traffic light across a 8 lane route. 😂. It was very late at night. He never flinched, & neither of them said a thing about it. I rewound the video 4 times to make sure my eyes saw it correctly. Yes, my eyes saw it correctly. I was shocked indeed. 😮
thats something you are funny litte bit so you know
@@tiffanygottlieb2590 : thank you. I really appreciate it.
That is his current and previous girlfriend - he had a slight detour with a Porsche blonde girl.
@@GA-wq8xq : we all consider his current girlfriend his wife. This happened with his current girlfriend / ('wifey' aka wife) just a couple of months ago in a video.
Aside from the Cybertruck and the Lightning's supercharger access during this race, it's all about the CCS crapshoot. Roll the dice and hope for the best. Around and around it goes, what speeds you're going to get is anyone's guess. Place your bets.
Can't wait for part 3 where you'll be coming through my home turf of Las Cruces, New Mexico ⚡🏜️
You passed through my hometown of Lake Charles Louisiana! Sorry about the smell and lack of decent charging infrastructure. We are a petroleum town that happens to be a city.
This is some of the most entertaining content that you have ever made
surprisingly exciting
I saw three Tesla Cyber truck's in Austin Texas the day before Easter!
Amazing futuristic technology
Love this series! next time you do this challenge another rule you should have is at lease 1 time all car/trucks must charge to 100% during the race. That would be cool!
"About to leave" at 62% when getting 198kw?!? Hell no!
Kyle is a mad man.
Mad about allisa
This has been so fun to watch! 👏Cant wait for Part 3!
I love how long these videos are!
Thoroughly recommend watching at 150% playback speed then switching back to 100% five minutes from the end, then you realise how stoned everyone is. Especially OOS Dave, he's blazed. No wonder he's so hungry.
I’m too stoned to notice HA
Team Dave for the win, fast food tour of the US.
every time I hear the ford door chime I hear "scoobie doo, sccobie doo"
you preet good thats insorit
Zoinks!!!
Dave is optimizing restaurant stops, not charging time!
Love the long format. Keep it up!!!
You guys driving through Beaumont brings back memories. I lived in that area for decades. I'm really sad you didn't show the big sign right before Orange. Beaumont 4 miles. El Paso 857 miles.
This is my current favorite show!
“Oh that’s where I’m going, Taco Bell.” Love that.
This team deserves a enima
I love the race, but I would like to see a map or something every once in a while to better know where each team is relative to one another.
You can follow along these races by opening a separate browser tab with PlugShare and locate all of the chargers they are using/going to on the map.
I thought it was just me. I got really confused over who was in what place.
If I participated in a race like this I would like to be in Dave’s team. At least I would be well fed 😂
Kyle's driving that CT like its a Nissan Leaf 😂😂
Thanks for this series. Unfortunately the longer I watch the more you guys are convincing me to drive one of my ICE vehicle, instead of my EV, on my next long trip. Thanks for the virtual experience. ;-)
Great video! Looking so forward to part 3, and I'm never even buying a truck here in Finland...
try cracking the right and left windows to clear the windshield, only works driving down the road
rly enjoy this series! it would be great to compare the overall energy consumption / charged amount / cost / time spent charging/detouring for all trucks in the final episode or afterwards.
We all know Kyle put the **despair intensifies** text over his dad walking around at the end. 😂😂
yes, anxiously awaiting this next run, you guys rock
At least Dave ate well.
Love the way Dave does it! Must be a senior citizen thing.
Coolness prevails
Looking forward to this part 2! I’m ready and can’t wait for part 3!
Loving this race, shows how good the tesla network is, but not sure about traffic hoping unless you figure it out for yourself.
Lol Kyle is a control freak. Good gracious dude. Stick to safe driving and stop micromanaging.
Thanks!
I read the title on the thumbnail as EV truck rage. 😂 I thought the people down south were upset you were driving an electric pickup trucks.
