This turned out to be the perfect video to watch while waiting in the ER for hours for my wife’s test results. Fortunately she seems to be doing better.
I was comfortable enough to do my first EV roadtrip in my Mach-E after watching your videos. I live in northern South Dakota (not EV charger abundant) and visited the Sioux Falls, Worthington, and Albert Lea chargers seen in this video. Thank you for all you do, I have learned so much from your channel!
Please don't put mineral oil in your eyes. It can't be healthy no matter how many processes it went through and how clean it looks or nice it feels in the moment. As I understand it it was an emergency purchase along the way so that's fine, but try replacing it instead of using it up
@ can’t replace it when the the Taycan charges so fast. It was either use it or have dry eyes in the middle of Wyoming at night and I was definitely not going to hit a deer because my eyes were drier than SpongeBob at the surface.
The Taycan was felt like it was BUILT for these kinds of races. Consistent 300 kw charging from low up to 80%, no throttling at all and seems to roadtrip like a Le Mans race. The struggles from both EA and even Superchargers now feel like the bottleneck for any EV moreso than the cars themselves. Poor Kyle in the i7 though, surprising how much better the similar priced EQS is doing in comparison even though it is lambasted for its egg like looks. The Ioniq 6 being the least expensive yet keeping pace with the rest of the group is also commendable.
It would be really nice to have a “place” tag on each shot, next to the vehicle and team members. Sometimes I can’t pay 100% attention for 3.5 hours continuously and I’m not sure if anyone has made a pass or not.
80% - 35% ipad battery in 3hr 40 minutes with plenty of buffer! Not bad battery performance on a 6 year old iPad used a lot every day! Another brilliant video guys and my I-90 Surge T shirt arrived from Lithuania 2 days after ordering it, not bad postage
1:22:13 Great to see Part 3 up! Not gonna lie, I felt a lot better than I look during the drive…my hair, some dry skin, and maybe a little something extra in my nose 😂. But hey, all part of the real road trip experience, right? Thanks, Out of Spec, for having me on Team EQS!
I really would have liked to see how the 440mi 350kw Silverado EV would have performed in this test. ☹️ Could we get an estimate of how it would have performed based on how the other vehicles performed in the real world vs on paper, then reduce the Silverado’s on paper performance to match? 🙏
@@CorvisStrife It's extra weight and size, and therefore, lack of efficency compared to these smaller vehicles, would not have been fair to include it. Especially at these higher speeds. Perhaps in the future it can be included in an ALL EV's race just to see.
@@CorvisStrife It would have got smoked, it charges fast on working 350kW chargers, but at 85 RIP and getting stuck on anything else will just kill it. Efficiency is going to be a third of that lucid with only a little better charging.
@@junehanzawa5165 The intro said “the longest range and fastest charging EV’s” so it would be appropriate to include. In his review Kyle remarked on how good it would be as a roadtripping EV. A poor result would still be interesting and would provide valuable context on two different methodologies. High capacity with high charging speeds spread out over a huge number of cells for higher charging curves. Versus lower capacities with more moderate charging curves and higher efficiencies. The extra weight would come into play climbing mountains but would partially be offset by the down mountain regen. Weight is not so much a factor on level ground, which the middle of the country is mostly flat. The increased wind drag at higher speeds may be countered by higher charging speeds and less frequent stops skipping over inferior chargers. The Teslas can use the Tesla & EA chargers while everyone else is limited to EA. The Chevy would be able to use the Tesla chargers but wouldn’t be able to hit its full charging speed that it can on EA chargers due to the difference in voltages. So it would be an interesting choice for the drivers to make. A poor result can still be interesting. And a surprising performance that exceeds expectations is always fun content.
Jordan did the editing. Some drivers are not good at saying were they are in there clips . I like how bjorn nyland gives the stats at each stop like what town he is at how many kWh and costs and kilometers.
I guess this proves we've made corridors possible in the middle of the country, that's definitely a needed step. Once we get some charger density and chargers around the states that arent on the main interstate. What progress we've made, but still so far to go.
Get the interstates lined out, a charging station at every service station or rest area (so roughly every 30-50 miles), and then start working with towns to have just something. Whether it's at a Walmart, a car dealership, a hotel, doesn't really matter. Town of 1k people, just put one charger with two connections at 150kw, nothing special, just something.
All we here about is how EVs will slow down a road trip too much to be practical. Meanwhile, these cross country "races" show that you actually don't have time to eat or sleep properly because the charging stops are too short.
The lack of time to sleep or eat properly has everything to do with the fact that it's a race, and nothing to do with the cars being EVs. Remember, you don't *have* to unplug the minute you have enough energy to reach the next charger; if you're in the middle of eating, you can just finish the dinner, then unplug. You can even eat dinner at a place without a charger if you like their food better. It's a free country. Yes, driving like that won't win you the race, but a real road trip is about enjoying oneself, not winning the race - if the goal is simply to get from Seattle to Boston as fast as possible, fly on an airplane.
@ab-tf5fl , you missed what my point was. Most people are saying they don't want an EV because they think they take way longer to charge than they do and that they get less range than they do. I'm saying that your human needs will need or want more breaks than the car will. These races just goes to show that if you choose to make great time rather than enjoying the trip, you still can with an EV. Just don't expect time for a sit down dinner.
Lots of nav systems in this episode having serious issues calculating range, SOC on arrival. Need to add to the list of Never trust the BMS, and Never trust the NAV arrival SOC, ABC, Always be charging deeper than you think. If you have to limp on the road you are losing time you can't make up. Don't get trigger happy and leave a charger if you have a good charge session. Charge a little deeper than you think you need. An EQS observation. It actually showed the weather on the route in the nav, that is AWESOME. All of these nav systems should overlay the weather or provide an icon you can click on to see what is going on with the wind and weather on your route. If it is accurate I love it.
@Longsnowsm (there's gotta be a story about that name): Totally agree - I"m currently on my second R/T from San Francisco to Indiana in my Kia EV6 (visit my elderly Mom) and the car's estimated range and the limited CCS charging options on I-80 have trained me to ALWAYS charge to 90-95%. Along with hitting cold snowy weather in Wyoming! Fortunately, my car charges so quickly it's really just another couple minutes inside the generic Walmart/Target/grocery store that an EA is usually in front of. Better to have range buffer than limping on an isolated stretch of highway with lifted 4X4's roaring past you, laughing...
@@brucemcdou As you have seen the Nav SOC estimates clearly don't know what the weather is doing either. I had one leg where my arrival SOC was supposed to be like 21% and I drove into really bad wind and rain. Well the good news is that the rain forced everyone to slow down, but it wasn't enough to offset the hit to range and my arrival SOC. So I ended up limping a little on that leg of the trip also. I think it is just a good idea to spend an extra 5 minutes and pad whatever the Nav system told you to leave with at the very least. Watching this installment of the Surge it is interesting to watch the teams trying to cut those stops short and it more times than not bites them.
This series is very good. There is so much to learn from how efficient the cars are to how fast they can take a charge. The earlier videos had me trying to figure out the range efficiencies and kwh/miles calculations and such but I think I am catching on. Jordan - doing a great job, someone mentioned a "place" tag after each car but I notice so many times, the drivers listing out where the cars are in relation to each other. Maybe at the end of those comments, a quick 2-3 seconds of the times they are behind the Acura. like this below Acura = Lead Taycan = +2H Model 3 = +3.25H Lucid = +4H etc.. Old Model S = Still in Idaho on their 35th charging stop That model 3 is the most impressive of the bunch. What a sweet bargain.
Fantastic series - I love it. As far as I can tell - this is all a massive advert for Tesla Tech, supercharging and efficiency and the beautiful Taycan and Porsche engineering.
Not me looking at the Ioniq 6 keeping up with the Mercedes, the Plaid, and even within shouting distance of the Lucid for about half the cost. But yeah, for pure price to performance, that Model 3 is probably hard to beat with range, efficiency, charging, infrastructure, etc. Curious how this changes a year from now when they'll likely all have access to all the chargers (assuming that still happens...).
With the bigger 84kWh battery the Ioniq 6 would be third, just behind the Porsche Taycan in second place and not all too far away from the gas car. Modern 800V + big batteries are a game changer. Would not buy a mid-size EV without 800V at this point, it is future-proof.
How it should be honestly. Porsche most expensive but also offers the best charging and range while also having the best looks and comfort/luxury. It's new suspension is a game changer
I remember back in 2013 when I had my Leaf and I'd see Teslas charging at 120 kW. I've never been so envious before or since. Now everyone complains about 120,000 watts!
fr tho Dave whines a lot for someone who's supposed to be optimising their car but then says they will push Lucid to it's limits. He's so annoying to listen to.
The one thing with charging is that you get to plan where you'll stop it gives you your arrival time so it gives you a goal. The ice car you're basically driving aimlessly. I think it helps you focus more while you're driving.
Time to binge watch another crazy road adventure by Out of Spec and friends I have been waiting all week for this and I can actually go outside if I want too but this will be more fun, old guy EV nerd over and out.
I've been through the stretch of I-90 where V2s are a majority in a Model S AWD LR, it was absolutely worth it to stay and charge for longer to skip the V2s and try to get on V3s only. So many V2s there are not even doing 150kW sometimes.
State of the art EVs hampered my poor software and charging infrastructure. Loved the video. All the teams (except the Acura) did an excellent job during the I-90 surge. I am looking forward to the final stage. Plenty of tips about navigation, charging and ADAS.
Another great video guys, the D Rating on the I7 was disappointing considering it costs well over $100k,what a journey,a big thank you to everyone who made this awesome challenge possible “We Thank You”Last Leg Incoming 👍
I love these. This is such a huge project. It would be fascinating to see where some of these cars would be in the pack if they just charged to 80% every time instead of bailing out at 50% with a good charge going. Some of these charging curves make sense but others i'm not so sure.
I really think for the next challenge the max needs to be 5mph over. 10mph will get you pulled over in a lot of states with a ticket. They don't play in Virginia or New York State. (I once got pulled over for 7mph over). In Montana it makes sense, but along the East Coast with traffic it's a hazard
@@greenneI know right, when I hear Kyle talk about 70 being slow it's so weird. I live in upstate NY, 5 over you are safe. 10 you are safe with local cops and sheriff's generally but state Troopers... gets really dicy. 15 you are playing with fire.
@@ayushmalpeddi2793 Ohio is terrible. I used to run a hotshot delivery service coast to coast. I learned which states you can let loose a bit and which you need to be vigilant about speed. With the bigger 84kWh battery it would be third, just behind the Porsche Taycan in second place and not all too far away from the gas car. Modern 800V + big batteries are a game changer.
I’m sure they told them to just take the drive comfortably and not kill themselves for the fastest arrival time. Meanwhile everyone else is doing calculus in the car to optimize their trip…
@@paydboardman2285 Which is silly considering all the other cars stop for 10-30 minutes at a time. They could easily hit through a drive-thru on the way to the charger. Either way, they're worrying about time. If not racing then you'd have plenty of opportunities to stop for dinner while getting a deep charge somewhere. Also maybe a level 2 at a hotel.
@@COSolar6419 people that really care about fair comparison maybe? it's stupid to add an ICE just for half-ass pleasing the part of the audience that is not so convinced about EVs yet
Have been a dedicated ev household for 3 yrs and done many extended road trips. However, currently have a suburban rental while the rivian is in service and I kinda forgot/miss the convenience of a quick fuel stop on long road trips and without the hassle of pre planning ev stops.
I’m amazed at how the Ioniq 6 arrives at 0% several times. It’s a shame Hyundai couldn’t get a 2025, it would have been more competitive and comparable to the Tesla 3 updated too.
I grew up in Mitchell, SD! Fun to see the Corn Palace. It used to be a very busy Main Street but the inteerstate came and drew the shopping North if the interstate. A great place to grow up.
I would just like to make a comment that in Billings Montana charger one and charger four for electrify America are power shared So had the lucid air move to either two or three then they probably would have pulled a whole lot more power because with the Taycan pull and the lucid, the power cabinet was pegged
Drew seems like a great guy. He doesn’t seem to complain a lot and is a good driver. I like having lacy and Sara along too they add a lot to the road trip.
One idea I wanted to share that could help with fatigue is to require pit stops for food for a fixed period of time. For example, in the morning, the car must be stopped for 15 minutes to get coffee. I just want to make sure all the participants are safe so we can continue enjoying these epic battles.
@@CheddarKungPao I'm so glad to hear that. You all are so awesome. It really gets me payched to hit the road with my own EV. And it's super helpful to have all the extra insight and tips to work with!
So just to be clear... the Lucid team pulled out mistaking their state of charge, missed it for ten minutes, came back to get 7% extra (~20m loss round trip, or an extra charge session), then slowed speed anyways to Gillette, where they arrived with 8% (showing they could have skipped the top off earlier or at least kept up speed)... Then they decide to switch strategies to go deeper into the curve where they lose more of the advantage?
It's interesting how close the Lucid Air, Ioniq 3, Model 3, Model 3 Plaid, and Mercedes are to each other so far. That little separation after over 2000 miles says that people can choose between those vehicles and know that they're all good road trippers.
Also need to keep in mind how people roadtrip is different. I love driving 400+ miles straight and napping for an hour during charging for the next stretch topping up to 95%. My brother has a Mach-E and needs to stop every 2 hours for bladder control and charging.

I remember back in 2013 when I had my Leaf and I'd see Teslas charging at 120 kW. I've never been so envious before or since. Now everyone complains about 120,000 watts!
Man the 3 in the Lucid seem completely clueless about road tripping and charging effectively. Their mistakes and fear are silly.
fr tho Dave whines a lot for someone who's supposed to be optimising their car but then says they will push Lucid to it's limits. He's so annoying to listen to.
@@jzzz26thanks for your feedback
The one thing with charging is that you get to plan where you'll stop it gives you your arrival time so it gives you a goal. The ice car you're basically driving aimlessly. I think it helps you focus more while you're driving.
Kudos to the Out of Spec crews! Two days in the car full of people and there will be no mysteries.
😂
Amazing Editing job! Love the little shout outs from people to Jordan about the job he has to do
I wonder what the costs for the whole trip will be for each car including Acura. Will they share it?
What an unbelievable job editing all this.
Time to binge watch another crazy road adventure by Out of Spec and friends I have been waiting all week for this and I can actually go outside if I want too but this will be more fun, old guy EV nerd over and out.
Feel a weird sense of pride as an Ioniq 6 owner watching it keep pace with way more expensive EVs
These videos are great, can’t wait for part 4.
I've been through the stretch of I-90 where V2s are a majority in a Model S AWD LR, it was absolutely worth it to stay and charge for longer to skip the V2s and try to get on V3s only. So many V2s there are not even doing 150kW sometimes.
exited to see the last episode next week. realy entertaining. much to learn from al this for my own road trips with the Model Y.
HAHA the "nice" made me rewind to double check that it actually popped up
This is really interesting. Can't wait till you post the part where your in my city in New York!
When is part 4 coming...Pls upload asap...Already hyped...
Next Saturday
State of the art EVs hampered my poor software and charging infrastructure. Loved the video. All the teams (except the Acura) did an excellent job during the I-90 surge. I am looking forward to the final stage. Plenty of tips about navigation, charging and ADAS.
Why do you think the Acura team didn't do an excellent job? They pumped the gas like nobody else ever could.

Such cool, calm and collected status update in the beginning from the gentleman in the TM3. Lovely.
Another great video guys, the D Rating on the I7 was disappointing considering it costs well over $100k,what a journey,a big thank you to everyone who made this awesome challenge possible “We Thank You”Last Leg Incoming 👍
I’d love to join the next one in my gen 1 leaf
At least you’d get to see every single charger across the country!
This video made me check the pricing of the Taycan Sport Tourismo.
Waking up 6am to get some unbothered watching time of this. Great content!
Yesss after this dark week it is a light a Saturday, Life goes one and this helps a lot ! Great show, editing, review in one long piece. Its awesome.
I love these. This is such a huge project.
It would be fascinating to see where some of these cars would be in the pack if they just charged to 80% every time instead of bailing out at 50% with a good charge going. Some of these charging curves make sense but others i'm not so sure.
3:33 Mercedes going 89mph, then gets pulled over shortly after. Did they forget the 85mph was the maximum for the trip?
I really think for the next challenge the max needs to be 5mph over. 10mph will get you pulled over in a lot of states with a ticket. They don't play in Virginia or New York State. (I once got pulled over for 7mph over). In Montana it makes sense, but along the East Coast with traffic it's a hazard
I agree. I’ve been pulled over and ticketed in WA for doing 7 over on I-90. They don’t mess around with speeding in Washington State.
@@greenneI know right, when I hear Kyle talk about 70 being slow it's so weird. I live in upstate NY, 5 over you are safe. 10 you are safe with local cops and sheriff's generally but state Troopers... gets really dicy. 15 you are playing with fire.
You will literally get pulled over for 3 over in Ohio with an out of state license plate @@greenne
@@ayushmalpeddi2793 Ohio is terrible. I used to run a hotshot delivery service coast to coast. I learned which states you can let loose a bit and which you need to be vigilant about speed. Ohio, Virginia, upstate NY, Cali and S. Ga(i95) come to mind as being strict enforcement. Illinois is a free for all, ND who cares, and Texas insane fast.
Watched the entire video in one sitting…at Work😊
The best place to watch videos.
Lucid team is dropping the ball a bit 😬
It's fun to see all the I-90 charging stops I made at the end of August but I left I-90 to drop down into Iowa on my way to South Carolina.
My last I-90 stop was at the Quality Inn in Sioux Falls, SD before heading to Sioux City, Iowa.
01:36:52 random fact, all UK HGVs are limited to 56mph, so the idea of one doing 82mph is mental to us!
Awesome road trip and competition… can’t wait to see the final leg…
IONIQ 6 … way to gooo !! Performance vs the cost of the car !! Mind blowing!! Giving competition to cars like taycan and lucid !!
With the bigger 84kWh battery it would be third, just behind the Porsche Taycan in second place and not all too far away from the gas car. Modern 800V + big batteries are a game changer.
Uhm, model 3 costs the same and is way better equipped...
@@boostav I mentioned lucid and taycan .. never mentioned the Tesla
The Acura guys are screwing around. They should be leading way more than they are.
I’m sure they told them to just take the drive comfortably and not kill themselves for the fastest arrival time. Meanwhile everyone else is doing calculus in the car to optimize their trip…
Unlike the other cars, they're stopping to get real food instead of surviving of jerky and chex mix.
Yea but who cares?
@@COSolar6419 people that really care about fair comparison maybe? it's stupid to add an ICE just for half-ass pleasing the part of the audience that is not so convinced about EVs yet
It feels like overthinking it sometimes makes it worse
Have been a dedicated ev household for 3 yrs and done many extended road trips. However, currently have a suburban rental while the rivian is in service and I kinda forgot/miss the convenience of a quick fuel stop on long road trips and without the hassle of pre planning ev stops.
Too many mistakes with lucid team cost them 30 to 60 min in this episode
That Taycan is ridiculous on 800V
real actual food: burgers and fries... you know you are in US 😀
It's all relative! Prior to that we were eating chips and stuff from gas stations!
This race sponsored by the phrase “feather it”
Haha, when they start talking about Fareway, Casey's and Hy-Vee, I know they are in my neck of the woods😁
That Model 3 has some serious bang for the buck!
A used Long Range one for close to $10k is even more bang for the buck
@ 100%!
I'm lying here sick in bed, totally bored. And sees antoher episode pop up! THANK YOU! Evening saved, awesome videos!
Get well soon.
Hope you feel better soon.
Me too 😊
Busted with the McDonald’s a 2:50:39. Great video. This is longer than lord of the rings lol
Love me some Mickey D's
Glad the model 3 was having such issues with the route planner in rural areas. I am also a rural Tesla owner and the planner is very unreliable
Yeah, something happened like a year or two ago when they tried to implement weather calculations. It used to be accurate to a few %.
This episode had me realize that the EQS is a liftback. That is a neat. I assumed it had a standard style trunk
Things are getting good now!
Way to go Team ioniq 6 !!
Great Job, Team Ioniq6
I’m amazed at how the Ioniq 6 arrives at 0% several times. It’s a shame Hyundai couldn’t get a 2025, it would have been more competitive and comparable to the Tesla 3 updated too.
@@tomm5936 The 2025 Ioniq 6 is pretty much unchanged versus the 2024
@ really. I thought it would get an increase in battery capacity from 77 to 84 kWh and faster charging.
I grew up in Mitchell, SD! Fun to see the Corn Palace. It used to be a very busy Main Street but the inteerstate came and drew the shopping North if the interstate. A great place to grow up.
I would just like to make a comment that in Billings Montana charger one and charger four for electrify America are power shared
So had the lucid air move to either two or three then they probably would have pulled a whole lot more power because with the Taycan pull and the lucid, the power cabinet was pegged
Finally! Someone cleans their windshield. Thank you Genesis team
This is the video where we learn we need a bunch of Kyle clones driving. The mistakes that were made Holy smokes smh lol
Time for my own road trip watching this during my charging stops
I love the shout out to the oil company LOL!!!
I love coming to the conclusion that “This is the first BMW to roadtrip!”😂
Was waiting for this so much i just dreamed that i was roadtripping with drew
Drew seems like a great guy. He doesn’t seem to complain a lot and is a good driver. I like having lacy and Sara along too they add a lot to the road trip.
One idea I wanted to share that could help with fatigue is to require pit stops for food for a fixed period of time. For example, in the morning, the car must be stopped for 15 minutes to get coffee. I just want to make sure all the participants are safe so we can continue enjoying these epic battles.
Appreciate it! We were definitely all safe. Safety was #1 for everybody.
@@CheddarKungPao I'm so glad to hear that. You all are so awesome. It really gets me payched to hit the road with my own EV. And it's super helpful to have all the extra insight and tips to work with!
Finally, next episode let's go keep up the great work y'all!
Then they decide to switch strategies to go deeper into the curve where they lose more of the advantage?
ok chop chop OOS, it's been 2 days, I need that part 4/4
Model 3 is such a deal for the price wow❤
Impressed to see the ioniq 6 matching the lucid!
"since I know Chicago so well, I picked a place to charge... Cicero" I spit out my drink haha
@28:37 the guy recording, looks like the scientist guy from the Independence Day movie
😂😂😂
The West Unity chargers are about 12 miles from my house...First place i ever fast charged, before i got my level 2 installed at the farm.
finally!
another loooong week went by
