One of the most important lessons I’ve learned from OoS is to be courteous to other EV drivers. Race or not, I found that to be COMPLETELY out of line and contrary to your inferred mission statement.

Would be good to see a race with different rules. Where you can't block any chargers and can't ask someone to move for you. Team Silverado offered to pay for someone's charge so they could use the faster charger lol.

Best dating show ever!!😂 Cybertruck likes them fast and hot. Silverado likes the big tank! Rivian takes whatever it can get. Lightning likes it slow and steady with a good kitchen. Let’s take this show to Hollywood.
3:31:46 I think this was the big takeaway from this trip. Both the Cybertruck and the Silverado EV were letdown by their respective charging infrastructure. V3 Superchargers are just underpowered for the Cybertruck, and while Electrify America has the best coverage of any public charging provider, most of their chargers and even charging sites struggle to actually supply 500 A to 800 V EVs. E-GMP cars are really threading the needle because they can benefit from the 800 V chargers while not requiring them to provide more than 350 A.
yeah, this was an infrastructure failure, it's crazy that they were basically tied until the end, if the Cybertruck had enough power, it would have been so close, but the Silverado had the bigger battery and pulled it off to win
@@danielzhang1916 It's not just the bigger battery. The fact that the Cybertruck couldn't charge past 30% in order to maintain the same average charging speed as the Silverado EV maintains to ~60% put the Cybertruck at a serious disadvantage. That means the Cybertruck needs to make four times as many charging stops just to hope to keep up, and any charging past 30%-40% or reduced power from the charger pretty much negates that. If Team Silverado didn't have such a sub par experience with the public chargers themselves, they would have finished a couple hours ahead. So no, not "just a big battery."
@newscoulomb3705 - Tesla launched the Cybertruck with conservative charging speed. I guess to play it safe. They just announced today a 20% speed increase in charging for the cybertruck through a software update. My guess is they'll even increase it more thru another update at a later time.
@@ronin7645 Perhaps, but that would still leave it trailing the Silverado EV 3WT by a considerable margin. Even if, after the update, the Cybertruck could maintain the same average charging speed as the Silverado EV 3WT to 50% or even 60%, it would still need to make 50% more charging stops on a longer trip just to maintain parity. And that's the 3WT, not the big battery RST or 4WT, which average 250+ kW all the way to 70% to 80%. Also, as hobbled as the Silverado EV was by the public charging, the CT suffers even more on the Superchargers. Even with V3 operating at 100%, the CT can't charge at its fastest speeds, and it appears as though the CT will put a V3 cable into limp mode after only 10 minutes at full power. CT owners basically must use the public charging infrastructure if they hope to have any chance of reasonably matching the Silverado EV's charging and long trip capabilities. So again, at this point, it's more about these trucks exposing weaknesses in the charging infrastructure.
yeah, they were basically tied until the end, if the Cybertruck had enough power, it would have been so close, they basically were even with barely a 5 minute lead, good job to both teams that give it their all
The Silverado EV was the best truck by far - insane battery size, crazy 300 kW charge speeds & it had 4 adults onboard the whole way, not to mention it was the only truck with an open bed the whole journey. The only reason the CT even held on was from Kyle's determination and using every trick in the book to maximize charging speeds on V3, arriving on empty, wet rags on charging handle & more controversially blocking a charger to not power share.
This was very well done guys, fantastic race and participants. Thank you for the hours of entertainment. Every aspect of this race, made it hard to stop watching. Made my Saturday, thx
Something that would be awesome for this type of video would be a sidebar showing the current time of day, time of race and current race position of each team. Not sure what the easiest way to achieve this is, given all the video composition that happens. But, indeed, it would be very interesting to track.
Awesome trip and video. Goes to show that good infrastructure is just as important as battery capacity and charge curve. Seems like we are at a good point already, 40 hours coast to coast wouldnt be slow for a gas or diesel truck. Watched the whole series like a podcast driving through Germany in my 27kWh Mini Cooper SE :)
Just finished a 2500km drive in the Tesla MY LR 2023 through 5 countries in Europe and it was awesome! Binge watching all your Videos while doing some kind of a race myself :) Thanks Guys!
The Cooling rag on the cable, I can only imagine thats a sensor on the charger that is being hoodwinked at some level, have to wonder if this is abusing the condition of the battery by giving it more charge than it actually wants at the temp is it as, compared to the temp it believes its at with the rag artificially cooling it.
That seems unlikely; the battery is a long way from where they were cooling things down with the rag. The cars have bunches of temp sensors in the battery packs themselves and are more than capable of asking the charger to slow down if things aren't going well.
I feel for the Lightening team. I’ve been there running out of juice about 100 yards from a v3 supercharger. But I was towing a trailer with my X so i took a hit to my previously brimming confidence. It happens!!

Crazy after over 2000 miles trip. 4th was the super comfortable F 150 , several hours after the rest arrived. Still a great truck.

4 hour video, crazy. I'm watching it (background) while I do some paperwork. Before I forget, will you tally how much the cost per truck to go on this long trip? and cost per kWh, and miles per kWh?
Trouble with the SCs with the CT are exclusive to the CT. I just did a 433 mile road trip in my Model Y with 2 charging stops and they were perfect, as usual.
Seeing the cyber truck having to jump stalls to get full power and always wrap the charging handles to keep full power is just ridiculous when all Out of Spec and others say is how near perfect Tesla Superchargers are. I never have to wrap a CCS handle to get 268kW on a Taycan? Then leaving the door open to block a V2 charger or hanging the handle to flag as broken is so sleazy. What if all Tesla drivers acted like this? I understand it’s a race, but shouldn’t you act like a good person? This doesn’t make an example of etiquette 😔
Yeah I agree, I would have liked to see a race in good faith, not pulling little tricks like that. Let's see how the infrastructure would actually work in real-life. When you inconvenience others just to win a contest, its pretty selfish.
I'd love to see another race with a twist: no location sharing. It would be fascinating to see how the lack of information impacts decision-making and charging strategies.
I am amazed by how close this race was among the three trucks going coast to coast. Impressed by all teams that is not an easy trip to take. I like to see how long each truck took to charge for the trip. That is probably the difference in the race.
yeah the Silverado and Cybertruck were basically tied until the end, if the Cybertruck had enough power, this would have been a different story, it's crazy they were basically even with just a 5 minute lead
I love Kyle's passion and enthusiasm. Without him this wouldn't have gotten done. With that said, his youthful impatience cost his team. They should have stayed at just about every stop until the Cybertruck dropped, at minimum, below180kw or so. The time lost getting off and back on when added all together is a lot longer than if they had stayed to said deeper charging points. Unless I'm mistaken, did they not unplug on one stop as soon as it went below 240kw? In fact, that would make for a FANTASTIC VIDEO: Two Cybertrucks racing one another: -- One with TEAM KYLE and his youthful impatience (or in his eyes: optimized charging). --And the other with TEAM DAVE and his laid-back wisdom with deeper charges (and of course, his restaurant tour). Quick, someone bring that up to Kyle.
I think it didn't matter until the last stretch, yeah they should have stayed a bit longer, then it would have been a different story, it's crazy that they were basically tied until the end with a 5 minute lead difference
As a former 600rwhp 04 cobra owner and a current 24 model y performance owner I love this. The model Y feels like having a 500rwp cobra like when I had a ported blower. Not as strong as the Whipple 2.3 but easy as anything to drive. It's really amazing. Love it
People who block charging spaces to protect charging speed are the same people that complain about ICE vehicles parking in charging spaces. Superchargeholes.
Fantastic video. I really enjoyed it although it's testing things that I'll never been able to afford (nor the Cybertruck will ever come to Europe apparently). I liked the adventure and may have only wished more images of beautiful American landscapes. Well done: really entertaining.
Asking people to move so you get a better charge it’s fine because you’re asking them, moving the charging so it looks like it may not work is a little sketchy morally, but leave it how you did after putting it like that was rude, Even with the apology, I don’t drive electric, If that’s what you’re going to do to win race, it doesn’t deserve a win if that’s how you’re gonna play the game.
Agreed. As an EV user it actually pissed me off. You aren't trying to get home to family you are doing a race with friends in this.... Kinda upsetting.
A lot of fun watching you guys do this and end up in my home town. Even though this race is not reflective of normal everyday driving it does show the state of the art really well. I am hoping the car manufacturers pay attention to what you did and experienced. Nice job guys!
1:33:00 With the vehicle icing the EA charger, what you do is pull up right behind them and plug in! Try to leave space by parking sideways to let some traffic thru the lane if you can, but just block those suckers right in and start charging.
The cold rag actually helps protect the handle as it doesn't have any cooling like the cable. They should have been using ice on the rag to really help it.
@thelegendaryfk7922 The sensor is watching for overheating. If you keep the handle cooled, the sensor knows the handle is not in danger. Therefore, you're helping the handle stay cooled, which is best for longevity. Has nothing to do with tricking any sensor. Anyone who says that, including any of these drivers, doesn't understand how it works.
@@junehanzawa5165 the only one who doesn't understand how it works is you and everyone who does this, as you said, the handle has no cooling, the rag is only cooling the outside of the handle, the inside is still getting stupid hot (you know, the part where all the actually important stuff is), only now the sensor doesn't know this is happening, and just lets the charger overheat and kill itself because it thinks it's fine when it is in fact very much not in any way shape or form. i hope tesla sends people like you the repair bill for these things
@mysteryboyee This doesn't even deserve a reply because you're clearly one of those incapable of understanding why we don't fall off from the bottom of a round planet. But here goes for those that do. The Tesla V3 handles have 2 sensors. One for the exterior to prevent it from getting too hot to handle (a lesson learned from V1's) and a second for the interior metal pins. If you only cooled the exterior, the interior sensor would still cut down the amperage (which causes the heat) if the interior of the handle gets too hot. So when you use an exterior cooling source that doesn't cool the interior, the interior sensor will still bring down the power. The only way the interior sensor won't bring the power down is ONLY if an exterior source is keeping BOTH the exterior AND the INTERIOR cooled below each of their heat thresholds. There is NO TRICKING THE SENSORS. The sensors don't have a heat sensor for themselves. They only measure the INTERIOR and exterior temperatures of the handle. If the interior of the handle is not kept cooled below its threshold, the INTERIOR sensor will bring down the power. So yes, a wet (preferably cold) rag helps protect the handle for as long as it can keep it below a certain temperature. As soon as that wet rag effectiveness is gone, the sensors bring down the amps. That's why it only helps for a few minutes.
I think this showed that EV road tripping has far fewer negatives that just a few years ago, but there is still tons of range anxiety/effort to plan charging stops. Hopefully in a few years with the continued improvements to to charging infrastructure, a few years from now this won’t be a big deal to cross country an Ev.
Normal people doing a road trip aren't trying to run their battery to 0 and plan their charging around actual breaks. By the end of the decade all of these DC fast chargers are going to be 350kw chargers and should have credit card terminals hopefully.

@@boostav good point. It would have been a major a-hole move if it made someone wait to charge
Would be good to see a race with different rules. Where you can't block any chargers and can't ask someone to move for you. Team Silverado offered to pay for someone's charge so they could use the faster charger lol.
50:28 - anyone wondering about the math: going 85 instead of 80mph needs you to use 12.9% more energy to push the air out of the way. Air drag is proportional to speed squared.
But the power to overcome it is cubed.
Dave: On the next episode of Diners and Dives Across America we find all restaurants near EV chargers
As a trucker thats very annoying when being tailgated that close especially with the newer cars with them bright headlights
You should put on your caution lights to let them know to back off. And when they pass you, give em your brights.
just brake check em
@@PazLeBon Or deliberately wander off to the stone filled side of the road to test out their windscreen strength
At least with the CT bright headlights shouldn't be a problem 😂

One of the best ever EV road trip videos from you guys and also on the whole of TH-cam! What an amazing bunch of people! Would love to hang out with you all some day...

Best dating show ever!!😂
Cybertruck likes them fast and hot.
Silverado likes the big tank!
Rivian takes whatever it can get.
Lightning likes it slow and steady with a good kitchen.
Let’s take this show to Hollywood.
Hollywood jus fk it up
are we keeping track of charging times and cost of charge at each station?
Each truck may have that feature
@@newscoulomb3705 yeah I know, the Cybertruck had a disadvantage from the beginning, they had to keep pulling over
@newscoulomb3705 - Tesla launched the Cybertruck with conservative charging speed.
4 hours oh wow. Even at 2 times speed my day is shot
Omg.. watched the whole thing. Congrats to all the teams. 40 hours of stressful driving, and you got there!!
I’d be interested to see how much it cost in total for each truck how much electricity did each one use and average price/kwh
4 hours ? Now that’s a finale
I did it! I watched/listened to the whole damn thing! It was so fun and actually a pretty useful exercise. Charging will only get (slowly) better.
Good to see Team Silverado finally found a working 350 kW charger.
Team Blind Pig
Prety much all of them worked...
This was awesome to watch! Thanks to everyone who drove these trucks that far!
So, how much did it cost to charge each truck total??
I watched every single video from start to finish . Epic Road trip
EPIC
This series was truly Epic. I am surprised even with such a huge battery Silverado only had five minute lead.
Maybe next races include a gas comparison as a benchmark. As chargers and efficiency get better, you will see lead in gas slowly vanish.
yeah, they were basically tied until the end, if the Cybertruck had enough power, it would have been so close, they basically were even with barely a 5 minute lead, good job to both teams that give it their all
If this was a normal road trip, it would have finished way in front. They were eeking out everything out of the Cybertruck
@@danielzhang1916 I like that the Silverado won. Gm gets too much bashing from people and the cyber truck still needs work
The Silverado EV was the best truck by far - insane battery size, crazy 300 kW charge speeds & it had 4 adults onboard the whole way, not to mention it was the only truck with an open bed the whole journey.
Oh man. First 4 hour TH-cam clip for me with regular speed. Awsome effort guys!
I'm pretty sure the temperature sensor is for the cable itself to prevent overheating of the connector.
Atlantic to the Pacific now that is just terrific.

One hell of a trip. Great testing of the trucks and charging system!
I'd love to see another race with a twist: no location sharing. It would be fascinating to see how the lack of information impacts decision-making and charging strategies.
Tyres on the Cybertruck are the biggest consumption Problem. Best regards from Germany and thank you for the great "Race".
I am amazed by how close this race was among the three trucks going coast to coast. Impressed by all teams that is not an easy trip to take. I like to see how long each truck took to charge for the trip. That is probably the difference in the race.
yeah the Silverado and Cybertruck were basically tied until the end, if the Cybertruck had enough power, this would have been a different story, it's crazy they were basically even with just a 5 minute lead
glad someone noticed the change in screen integrity, I noticed this in the showroom, crazy.
In fact, that would make for a FANTASTIC VIDEO: Two Cybertrucks racing one another:
-- One with TEAM KYLE and his youthful impatience (or in his eyes: optimized charging).
@@danielzhang1916 The only way to find out is to have a race between 2 Cybertrucks like I just mentioned above.

If the charger is full somebody will try it anyway so all this pearl clutching is laughable.
Kyle needs to set up a race when Farrah picks up his Macan Ev!
1:33:00 With the vehicle icing the EA charger, what you do is pull up right behind them and plug in! Try to leave space by parking sideways to let some traffic thru the lane if you can, but just block those suckers right in and start charging.
The people who use a rag to keep the handle cold are the same people who complain about delisted chargers
The cold rag actually helps protect the handle as it doesn't have any cooling like the cable. They should have been using ice on the rag to really help it.
@@junehanzawa5165 it just tricks the sensor, which is there for safety reasons
This series was amazing. I’m here for all of this!

Absolutely Awesome….never seen anything on YT to match this epic. Thanks guys!
Thanks guys. You're all crazy! 😉👍
