Black Swan is based on a quote from the famous dancer Martha Graham, "A dancer/performer dies twice, once when they have to quit performing and then again in body." Not a direct quote, but the idea is the same. They are talking about their fear of losing their passion for music and performing because it has defined them since they were very young. Most of BTS' music is analytical and deep. They deal with self doubt, depression, the struggle to love yourself etc..They derive their inspiration from psychology, poetry, folk tales from all over the world etc. They are very admirable. Even their more recent lighthearted English songs were meant to raise spirits during the current world situation. Nothing they do is without meaning and thought.

black swan is about BTS deepest fears of losing their passion in music/dance because of the pressure of fame. They compare it to dying their first death which is more painful than their 2nd death. But they found that music is their sanctuary and where they can find themselves.

Take note of all the shadows. Once again, this goes back to Carl Jung's Map of the Soul....discovery and acceptance of 'self'. You'll get a better understanding of the meaning behind many of the songs on all three albums by first watching RM's 'Persona' together with the explanation video for the song by a Korean on DKDKTV.

As some one who strugglings with PTSD from a 12year abusive relationship, depression and anxiety, This song really hits me hard! It's like they're digging deep within to find the reason why they love music. I can relate because i too had to dig deep to find who i am as an individual! Not a wife, not a mom, not a co-worker but just me. What moves me what makes my heart beat! My favorite line is, " do your thing..... What's my thing, tell me yeah yeah yeah!" I love this because i wanted to be me but i don't know who i was and needed others to tell me who i was. Thankfully that's not the case now!😁 Hence my screen name! 😁💜

it's interesting that you picked out the elements of the song that touch on depression, as it is may be relevant in parallel to the intense feelings of fear and/or anxiety. when we watch Jimin (the focus in this video, who is a trained contemporary dancer) dance himself nearly to death, the depth and emotion is reminiscent of Black Swan the movie (with Natalie Portman) based on Swan Lake, but that BTS had masterfully incorporated their own emotions through the lyrics, choreo and overall vibe. BTS' Black Swan is from their Map of the Soul: 7 album that had dropped just before the pandemic began in 2020. the album also contains songs like "ON", "Louder Than Bombs", "Interlude: Shadow", "UGH", "My Time", among others with thoughtful/thought-provoking lyrics. thanks for reacting to it.

“Black Swan” has to do with the balance with the light and shadow side of our personalities. This album (Map Of The Soul:7) was inspired by psychiatrist Carl Jung’s theory of individuation that explores the Persona-Shadow-Ego side of our personalities. BTS’ Black Swan is about the fear of losing passion for something you once loved (in this song, BTS refers to their music/art/dance), but finding your way out of that dark place/thoughts to find your passion for it again (the lyrics referencing swimming out of the abyss/waves of negative thoughts). (it has some slight references to the film “Black Swan” which in the film the ‘shadow’ side overcame her/Natalie Portman and led to her demise). BTS member/leader RM and PDogg were the main writers of this song. There are 2 versions/videos of Black Swan. This one and an orchestral version (which is my personal favorite) and BTS created an art film with MN Dance company from Slovenia for that one which coincided with their “Connect BTS” collaboration with several visual and performance artists and galleries throughout the world. BTS is next level pop music-they’re Art!

Almost all of their stuff has several levels. There is the surface level as you watch. Then there is the surface plus the lyrics. You missed some that might help explain what is going on. Yeah, you usually have to watch more than once to really get what is going on. Then, some MVs belong to the Bangtan Universe, a third level that is a fictional story connecting albums, webtoons, a game, books, even various versions of the same song, with different and additional stuff in the Japanese vs. Korean versions. This BU starts with the song ‘I Need You’ one of their early pieces. I don’t think Black Swan belongs to the BU. There are excellent explanations of this piece by other commenters. However, I do think the angel with black wings, in this piece only, represents death, and the person walking away has suffered their 1st death (again other comments). As this can be understood various ways, yes, it is a great study in depression with the white suited BTS fine, the black suited, depressed.
One of the interesting things with BTS is that there are often various explanations. One of the most opaque videos is ‘On’ MV. However, one of the greatest dance videos made is ‘On Kinetic Manifesto’.
To get thru MVs where the lyrics count, etc.I recommend doing the video reading the lyrics, then going through again and really watching what’s happening. A good next video is Fake Love. It is on 3 levels as it’s connected to the BU, but just watching and understanding the lyrics does a very satisfactory job. There are places that may be opaque, but keep going. The lyrics are rather magnificent.

It is about the inner fears of artistes. Fear represented by shadows in the mv.
In the end this fear is calmed down, thus the smooth exit of the shadow which at one time was moving crazily.
The fear of losing interest in their art, music. That would be their first death and more painful.
Thats what a famous dancer Martha Grahm said once.

Like others have said below, it’s about the fear of losing your passion. A lot of the visual symbolism is based on the ballet Swan Lake, which is about dark/evil and light/good battling each other, within oneself. Within the ballet there is an epic battle against a white swan and a black swan and many times in the performance it is played by the same ballerina. There will be a ton of references to a shadow self in their discography. The battle against temptation. Really enjoying your reactions😘💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

  • @jinsmoonmarie6452

MOTS Persona and MOTS7 era albums take a deep dive into Jungian psychology by Carl Jung - Jung believed that the human psyche had three parts: the ego, personal unconscious and collective unconscious where the shadow gets larger the more famous they get, creating doubt and the fear of losing their passion for music (first death). Their discography follows chapters or eras in their own personal development as human beings and artists and is highly influenced by social, political and literary narratives - added to that their are story arcs linking these chapters together. I recommend approaching your reactions based on your background in mental health - BTS’ catalogue is heavily based on very relatable mental health issues the members themselves have experienced as teen youths till now as their current selves in their mid to late 20’s.

Thank you for the reaction and yes along with the other layers yes they do talk about things particularly taboo in Korea like mental health etc they bring awareness that it’s ok to discuss struggles, their own with being inspired as artists/musicians. Plus the video is just beautiful, the song is memorable, and the choreography is unique (rare to see barefoot contemporary style from … well anyone at the top of the charts… the main dancer this time was Jimin who was trained in contemporary and the dance is really a chance for him to shine).

This song and MV are based on Martha Graham's "A dancer dies twice-once when they stop dancing, and this first death is more painful.” quote. I think the members were imagining what their lives would be like without their music and performing. I would think that if creatives were to lose their inspiration to create and produce, their lives would lose meaning and focus. It's a daunting thought.

This song is coming from an Artist/Dancer Perspective and losing the passion for it.
They say a dancer/artist dies two deaths. The first death is that loss of passion. It also ties into the theme of this album "Map of the Soul" named after Cark Jung's Studies. This album is focused. On "shadow" and "Ego". The previous album is "Map of the Soul: Persona". Their Albums are extremely Conceptual and follow different Themes. "Wings", that album's theme is based on Nietzsche's Philosophies and the Novel "Damien" by Herman Hesse.

BTS always write songs about themselves and their journey. Even Dynamite, Butter and PTD, although not their usual style, they’re meant to uplift us during these dark times. BE was the album where they dived deep into their feelings during the pandemic. Before these, the Love Yourself series of albums tackled relationships of all kinds and how we often hide our true selves to try to please others.
The Map of the Soul series, where Black Swan is from, is more introspective. They used Carl Jung’s theories as base for their introspective journey. They achieved more success than they thought they ever would and that scared them. They used these albums to revisit their path and talk of their own fears.
Black Swan deals with the moment they felt so much pressure to be the best that they stopped enjoying music. However, it’s through music that they released these fears and found themselves again.
I’d suggest Fake Love, The Truth Untold, Tear and Epiphany next in that order.

I would like to recommend their song Magic Shop, it’s a song that they dedicated to their ARMY. After hearing Magic Shop and reading it’s English translation I remembered that I once heard of Magic shop, in the terms of psychology it is a psycho-dramatic technique that exchanges fear for a positive attitude.
It’s a song where they asks their fans to open their hearts when they're in pain and they also tell us about their own experiences, letting us, their fans, know that we’re not alone.
Another reaction request is Bts song called The Truth Untold.
The song seeks to talk about their inner struggles and how they are forced to hide their true selves under a mask in order to keep going.

  • @Ana-id6uk
    @Ana-id6uk 3 ปีที่แล้ว

A few layers to the song. The movie Black Swan is connected, since we can see them doing more classical/modern dance moves + it's in a theater. Then there is the classical music version of this song with a cool dance company that does contemp/urban/fusion dance, which adds another layer and contains the quote by Martha Graham everyone mentions. Finally - the song is on the Map of the Soul albums, a group of albums dealing with the exploration of self by Karl Jung's theory. Black Swan seems to be on the album focused on the repressed subconscious, or one's shadow. This is why you see the shadows in the mv move differently from the people performing.
These are just hints on the actual meaning, I'll leave the rest to your own interpretation ^^

Carl Jung's Map of the Soul Theory of Individuation - Shadow, Ego, Persona, anima/animus are all explored in the Map of the Soul Albums by BTS. This song "Black Swan" explores the Shadow, and it references the movie Black Swan and Martha Graham's Quote, “a dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful.” You see Jimin in the music video become the Black Swan, and he is the solo performance in this MV. Jimin has a background in contemporary dance, and he is an awesome dancer.
Dr. Stein explores the lyrics in-depth in an episode of the Speaking Of Jung podcast, where he explains how Map of the Soul is an album full of "longing and struggling for authenticity" that resolves on the final track, Dionysus, with the band "breaking out of persona traps" and reaching an awakening.

Please watch this video for a deeper dive into this song: th-cam.com/video/PRdSXnBqkak/w-d-xo.html
It's an analysis/explanation video on the song & MV. BTS go very deep into the art they create: music. This song is about losing one's passion for their art, passion etc..feels like their first death. Bookish theories does a better job at explaining. 😁💜
BTS is very aware and in tune with various subjects/issues and mental health & awareness is one of the many issues they tackle. "Music & artists for healing" has been their slogan/message etc since they debut back in 2013. 💜
