  • How to troubleshoot, test, fix, repair top loading washing machine problems like no power, water level switch, no water filling tub, timer control, lid and start switch, drive motor, water pump, capacitor, and much more. My particular problem was the motor did not start agitating. You will see how I fixed that problem, and also learn how to check all the other parts to help you resolve your problem. Even though your make/model may vary from the machine shown in this video, the same testing procedures also apply to other makes/models. While no video covers every little detail, this one certainly covers a lot! Your washer may have an additional feature which is not shown on the washer in the video. If you have any further questions, please feel free to post them in the comment section. I will do my best to answer any questions as soon as possible.
    **To repair the agitator, please refer to my other video below:

    I learned so much from this video! Very informative, thank you!
    I just ordered a multimeter to start checking things. I don't think there's anything wrong with my motor since I can hear it humming. My problem is the washer simply won't spin. It agitates and drains just fine. I open and close the lid repeatedly and I can see the belt move and stop, move and stop. I've got it to actually spin doing this repeated action once before. But not anymore. Sometimes it will move and continue for just a tiny bit like it wants to start up, but not for long and it ultimately stops.
    I've tried cleaning the pressure tube (that leads to the pressure switch/level switch), I've checked the drain tube (it's not clogged), the timer progresses through the cycles, the lid switch seems to work...
    Next I will check if the water pump is clogged since I've heard that too can cause the washer to not spin.

      Hi and Lo start and run windings are good, timing and fill switch and lid switch all not a factor - agitates just fine, and motor got very hot on normal cotton cycle drain/spin **but not turning** (and with a heavier load than my original empty/small fill testing), also eventually got a slow start to a normal spin when cycled the lid a few times (which may have loaded up the capacitor just a bit more) - and even though got a fairly healthy spark to my screwdriver when shorting out the capacitor, and it meters to load and fall off, only logical conclusion at this point is that the capacitor is just not quite enough to kickstart the motor under a larger inertial load. So, going to "easter egg" that with a new one (no used ones, for obvious reasons...) Machine is very similar model to the one in your video, and ten years old, so with a capacitor tester running about the same as a new capacitor - seems like a pretty good bet...

    Thank you for your detailed analysis of the possible damages. Do you maybe have any idea, what is the meaning of 3 led blinking, in a serial manner (1,2,3, 1,2,3 etc) on the control panel ? The troubleshooting guide, reports that I should call a technician. It is a Brandt, top load washing machine and the model is WTC-1033. My was that I operated the appliance, only for a few minutes, having forgot that the main water supply, (central of the house) was closed... I believe that the damage is in the water pump. What would you think? Kind regards. John

    Thanks for your video, it's super helpful. My washer machine's issue is with the capacitor. However, mine looks the same as yours, which has no label or marks indicating what is the capacitance. I tried to lookup online for my GE WCSR2080B2CC but couldn't find any info related to the capacitor, all they have is the motor kit, which includes the whole set of motor, capacitor and harness. How can I determine the capacitance is should be? Thanks.

    This is a great tutorial but I wish you had shown exactly how to remove the plastic casting on the pump, because we can get one part off but not the other two no matter how hard we try. I have a Hotpoint top load washing machine that will not drain and it doesn't kick into spin mode until you hand drain the water out with a bucket so far down then it will kick into spin. It fills with water and washes just fine just will not drain, but you can hear it clicking through the cycles. I have checked for obstructions, put on a new lid switch, brought a new pump and put it on, and still it will not spin unless you get the water almost all the way out then it will kick into spin mode and it works properly then. Do you have any suggestions. I have heard it may be a timer or the transmission or something to do with a pressure switch. I appreciate any advice. the model number is VBSR2080WOWW thank you.

    Good troubleshooting video. After watching it, I'm thinking I need a new control board? Because my GE top loading washer won't fill on Auto-Fill (or do anything else in Auto-Fill - although all the lights light up. But the washer will fill on the other Load settings - but wont stop filling when the lid id raised up. And, the washer won't go into wash mode, or drain and spin mode. Although initially, after I unplugged the washer for a minute, re-plugged it in and opened and closed the lid (6) times it did drain. But now it won't drain - even after repeated un-plug resets. Is it possible my control board is fried?

    Question: Whirlpool washer doesn't agitate part way thru cycle. Timer just runs and coninues thru cycle. I hrar clicks so I know it blowing by the soak part and additional ahitations. However, it will rinse and spin and drain. This is on all cycles. Ive replaced Motor, replaced timerand checked lid switch( it has power) Someone else suggested its my water temperature switch. Whirlpol top load wtw5300vw2. I want to keep washer cause its a direct drive and relatively easy to work on. (2009) Newer models have to much electronics to break down. Thoughts on what it could be? Dont see how it could be temp switch?

      Glad you enjoyed the video! I don't think all machines have a fusible link. I did not notice one on the machine, If I did, it would have been super easy to test using a continuity tester or the low ohm range on your DMM. Thanks

      @Jack6778 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +electronicsNmore I agree. I didn't notice one on your machine while watching either. Mine was covered in electric tape so I didn't know it was there other than it being noted on the electric schematic. I ended up cutting my fuse out to test it, but I think I could have found both ends of the wire to test it if I had doubts about it.

      electronicsNmore my washing machine is a whirlpool.. was working and just stopped .. there is water.. I wiggle the water level switch and water pours in ok. I changed the lid switch last year... I rotated the agitator clockwise, it moves.. I move it counter clockwise and it also moves and spins .. I figured it could be the Dog ears.. so maybe I can change that today.. When I turn the timer switch nothing happens.. I DONT HEAR the motor or anything . So hopefully it’s just the agitator ..

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@japonnahilaw5860 An agitator with faulty dogs won't keep the machine from running. You need to do some testing.

    • @japonnahilaw5860
      @japonnahilaw5860 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      electronicsNmore I kinda figured that.. I will do the tests you did and hopefully find the more detailed Link video for each test step.. it all started after I moved the machine to clean the air duct.. after HVAC guys blew air to clear dryer and external ducks... after the air blowing , I guess sand and other small materials started to rattle the aluminum duct.. started vibrating with all these little particles... so I removed the air duct from the ceiling and dumped the contents as much as I could ... I couldn’t move the washing machine much as it is a double deck washer and dryer on top ... the dryer is vibrating more than usual.. still some little bits of sand maybe rattling around.. then after a few washes the machine just filled up with water and nothing happened after.. No sound on the motor .. maybe the timer switch needs to replaced.. the water knobs are working, dryer is working but no sound or movement from the washer..

  • @grahamhorne8702

    I have an older washing machine that fills up and then trips the gfci outlet. I found a burn mark where a spring touches the back metal panel at the bottom of the machine. I realize this is a ground fault, but what is the most likely source? Is this where I would say check the motor for continuity from hot to the motor housing?

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The washing machine shouldn't be on a GFCI. It should have a dedicated 120V/20A circuit with a single receptacle. I guess you have it plugged into another receptacle that's within 6 feet of a sink in the laundry room. Sounds like there's a leakage of current at the motor, since the GFCI trips when the motor goes to start up. Check for water leaks inside the machine.

    I have the exact same washer as in the video. It will work fine for a load or two and then just decide that it doesn't want to spin at the end of a cycle to dry the clothes. I cleaned out the pressure hose earlier today after the unit had been sitting untouched for about two weeks and it worked great for two consecutive loads but then on the third it wouldn't spin during the final rinse/spin cycle. I'm wondering if something might be heating up and just need lubricating to reduce friction? Any suggestions?

    For the life of me I cant find a capacitor in my washing machine. I have had the washer completely apart, drum, transmission, motor and control panel off. Traced the wire harness from the timer switch down to the motor and no capacitor along the way. Do all machines have a motor capacitor?

    I have this same washing machine. When I tried to drain the capacitor with a lamp I got nothing. No spark or light. So my question, is this done just to drain the remaining voltage out? Or does this mean my capacitor is no good?

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Michelle S
      Hi Michelle. If the lamp switch was on, then the capacitor should be drained when you placed the plug across the terminals. You need to test the capacitor to make sure it is good. Using the lamp was just a suggested way to bleed off any dangerous charge stored in the capacitor.
      Thanks. Be sure to rate thumbs up, and share my videos with others.

    Hi. I have an older Fridgidare top loader. After the final spin the wash is still left too wet. I kept the lid open to watch the final spin and it seemed to spin ok. So I turned the switch to final spin again and watched it spinning but, at a much faster rate the second time. In fact, this second spin removed the water very satisfactorily. I checked the v-belt and it looks fine. I'm not sure what the tightness should be, but I think it's tight enough. I noticed that there is some oil loss underneath around the belt area. Watching the belt as it turned it didn't look obvious that it was slipping because of the oil. So, I'm not too sure what this might be?

      Inspect the pump assembly and see if there is a place to open up to check for a partial blockage. Over the years, lint can build up in the pump or discharge hose.

    My washer (GE mod GTWN4450MOWS) sometimes doesn't agitate but sometimes after resetting it agitates. It used to not fill but now it always fills but sometimes does not agitate or spin sometimes it does after resetting a few times and turning dial and pressing start.
    So basically it can do everything but usually just fills unless reset which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. There is no timer part for this model but a main control panel instead. Any ideas what it could be?
    Not sure what could be wrong so I do not know what part I may need.

      Try bypassing the lid switch with a jumper wire as a test. Unplug the washer before touching anything. If it works, then replace the lid switch, if it doesn't, then you may have a faulty timer control.

    Any thoughts on my problem? I have a GE clothes washer. My wife was washing a large pillow. Part way through the cycle we heard a loud bang come from the laundry room. When the cycle completed we opened the lid and the pillow and inside of the washer were covered in spattered oil marks. We tossed the pillow and cleaned the inside drum of the washer. I checked it over for balance, checked the agitator and it seemed fine. We ran a load of rags and it worked fine. We ran a couple of loads of wash and it seems to be working okay. I told a mechanical minded friend of this and he thought that it might be the sealed bearing breaking in the motor caused by the weight of the pillow during the cycle. He thinks that is where the oil droplets came from. I'm assuming that if he is correct, I am on borrowed time with the washer. Would sure appreciate your help.

      I don't see only the timer motor being sold. The lowest prices I found for the timer were at the link below.

      Either a faulty fill valve, or faulty water level switch. I suggest you inspect the hose to the level switch as well.

    Why does an AC capacitor retain charge? This capacitor is basically just for phase change isn't it. Its not like its a DC. filter cap. I saw the discharge but am still in the dark about this. Thanks-JJ

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      john james The alternating current flowing across the capacitor will leave a charge on the capacitor unless there is a high resistance(Usually around 10M) resistor internally across the terminals to bleed off the charge. As a general rule you always discharge a capacitor before touching them.
      Thank You!

    my problem is, washing machine not spinning when i put at "Wash" setting. But when i put at "Spin/drain" setting it will spin like no problem.

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like a control timer issue since it works using another setting.

    Kenmore washer mod.11026722990. I bypassed the lid switch, and only get a humming sound. I am testing this machine in agitation and spin m ode WITHOUT WATER IN MACHINE. Does it have to have water in it for this test? Trying to determine if machine is working before transfer from my friends basement to my house. If it does need water in it to spin and agitate, how can I test it without water in it? Thank you for your brilliant tutorial, and look forward to your answer.

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stuck or faulty motor. See if the motor has a start capacitor, that could be faulty.

    • @stewartbruce2409

      @@electronicsNmore Thank you for your reply. This washer has been siting in cellar for several years without use. I will see if the motor pulley is stuck. So it sounds like it should agitate, and spin with no water in machine? I send my blessings to you for your guidance. Thank you Bruce and please let me know if I can be of assistance to you?

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Make sure the solenoid valve blade terminals are being supplied with 120VAC when set to cold water. When you check the hot solenoid valve, you should see 120VAC at the blade terminals while filling the tub..

    Whast the most common thing that causes none of the stations to work? Won't fill, agitate, rinse, spin, nothing. Have a tub full of water and clothes, filled then quit, and as I said I can run the timer to every station, nothing...

      Faulty lid switch, faulty timer control, or a power supply issue.

    First and foremost; unplug unit!
    Always assume that your audience is not as well versed in appliance repair as yourself. You'd be surprised at how many videos omit this one important safety feature!
