Actually, I saw the SGDQ run, and if speedrunners go for Any%, they only play the game legitimately up to the point where you need to have Luigi get under a barrel to reflect a fireball in Chucklehuck Woods, and then they glitch their way directly to Little Fungitown to get the Mush Badge, and then glitch to a few more points of interest before glitching to Bowser's Castle, and then to Boweletta using the escape sequence's path. Never once do they use Spin Jump to increase movement speed even to get the Mush Badge. At least I don't remember them using that trick.
Also, Popple and Bowser have TWO Bros. Attack. The other is where Bowser lights Popple on fire and throws him at one of the Bros. and you have to play tennis with Bowser.
Anyway, the way I think the Mush Badges work is that the game runs two algorithms. One for the value of your regular attack, and one for the value of the raw Mush Badge's attack, and then add that second value to your attack to calculate total damage. This is why it did around 70 damage at their weakest when it should have been like 2 or 4 normally.
And see? That time freeze attack IS easy to dodge.
I was going to bring up the speedrun in another one of these videos. Everyone hates Jokes End, so the speedrun skips it entirely. It does make the final boss really tricky though, you often need to dodge multiply volleys of attacks in a row where any hit is instant death. Apparently it's the main thing M&L speedrunners have to practice for.
