I have a son in middle school. He has pretty good judgement most of the time, and so do his friends. But I noticed something interesting about groups of middle school boys. When they form a recreational group the average decision making capacity, judgement, and intelligence of every kid in the group immediately drops to that of the lowest group member divided by two. In other words, apparently rational and intelligent boys immediately start acting like complete idiots. And I see that happening here too.

I thought the exact same thing. The previous Dive Talk video of this had the guys sounding smart and cautious. But this time, with all "the boys," it was throw caution to the wind, do whatever, "don't wanna look like a ***** in front of everyone!" It's hard to stop though. I'm a guy; I've been in that situation before. Well, not in an underwater cave, thankfully.
Obviously doesn't affect all groups of guys all the time. But that's how quickly it can "unravel," before someone gets hurt. And someone did get hurt in this video, even if not serious. Add in caves and water and this could've turned out a lot worse.

You found a group drop in intelligence in a group of kids including your son and from that very limited, unscientific, personal observation concluded that this was a thing! And it was applicable to all people or all males. Absurd. If one of those kids had thrown up you'd conclude no telling what from that. Thankfully people don't use your logic.

I was a Park Ranger who gave cave tours. Every now and then we would have someone hit their head and it's fascinating how fast mold starts to grow on areas of blood on the cave. I've also been able to go off tour caving with a guide and I can't imagine doing it in water. And yes, Texas has issues with flash floods and I don't think these guys have enough respect for the dangers of what they are doing.

I literally did stuff like this when I was like 18-19 yrs old- and I look back at it now in wonder of how we didn't end up dead or seriously injured- or at the least in need of serious rescue. We went into a cave like this once- about this far underground to- and our flashlights died on us. We had stopped on the way to the cave and went into Walmart and bought a pack of 5 flashlights for like 10 bucks- gee, I wonder why they didn't hold up? 3 of them never even came on- they were dead out of package- which we didn't find out until we needed them. Yeah, we didn't even bother to test each light- we just pulled out the first 2 and went for it. When they died- we go to use the other 3- they're DOA. We had a cigarette lighter- which made it about 50-75 yrds and then the plastic that holds the striker wheel and all melted, and it fell apart. Now we're in cave in total darkness- blacker than any darkness I've ever seen- about a half mile underground- in a cave system with endless tunnels and cracks to get lost in- and we've never been here before and do not know our way around. Plus- we all know that before we can get out we have to crawl through a section about 30 feet long were you have to lay on your belly in the water and keep your head up- no lighter is going to get you through this. You would never be able to keep it above the water as you crawled. So, we know we're trapped- and it's starting to get ugly- ppl are panicking, arguing, starting to blame one another, etc.- not good. But thankfully- as everyone is arguing and fighting, I see a little light coming. At first, I thought I was imagining things, so I didn't say anything but- eventually someone else is like "Hey, what's that?" It was a church group who had decided after church to come see the cave- and once they noticed our truck parked there and saw our footprints- a couple of them decided maybe they should check on us and make sure we're alright.
Now you can say whatever you like- and sure, maybe it was all pure coincidence and meant nothing- I can't even say that I believe in a god- but as far as miracle stories go, I think this one holds more weight than about any other I've ever heard and believed in. It's truly odd that these ppl came out there on that day, for the first time- at the right time, and noticed our footprints, and decided to check it out. I mean 99% of the ppl I know would've looked at those footprints and thought "Good luck guys" and then left. I don't know anyone who would've went in, for over a half mile- until they found us. Especially considering it was getting dark out, it's a Sunday afternoon, and they have their wives with them.

    • @jjhaya
      @jjhaya 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

It's a pretty great coincidence and I'm glad you were all safe and able to share the story but I can say your chances would have been close to none if it happened in a day that's not Sunday. They were good people who just happened to be curious about the cave and the footprints intrigued them and wanted to check where the people who printed them; Good thing you all survived and it's unfortunate to know that there are incidents like these that didn't have good endings .
Speaking of coincidences. I also helped in saving a life or at least prevent severe wounds. It was pretty late at night when I was watching TV at our Uncle's house which is close to our grandparents' house; just along the street and the place I sleep at is the latter so decided to go to the other house to sleep since it's late at night and when I walked out I noticed a bright light .
T was also a coincidence that there were teens who just happened to pass by and noticed it too and it was on fire; a small shop made out of woods and we went to fetch water from a barrel in the front of the yard of my Uncle's house to put out the fire. There's also a child inside the burning shop and we shouted to wake him up and he did and panicky opened the padlocked door; fortunately, he survived; the cause of the fire is a candle that was probably kicked or fell that went on to enflame the curtains .
I'm glad that child survived. I would probably not help that much alone but I was glad that I was able to help put out the fire along with the people who just happened to pass by. I don't know if he would have died if we hadn't happened to notice it but he would have had severe injuries; glad that he escaped unscatch but hopefully with a lesson on how to be careful with fire .

Tagging @@jjhaya in case you’re interested to hear my story. OP’s story is absolutely amazing. Mine isn’t that dramatic, but I do believe it’s a miracle.
My little sister and I were playing in waves on a beach, and long story short we went out a bit too far, and she panicked. Her panicking was “freezing.” She stayed in one place despite me trying to drag her back to shore, yelling at her to follow me.
Each wave that crashed over us dragged her further into the ocean. I tried waving to people on the beach, but there were so few and no lifeguards present. She was about 8 feet away from me, and I was closer to shore.
Another wave hit us and while I was under the water, I prayed once “God, please help us get out of here.” I came back to the surface, and my sister was right next to me, and both of us were able to easily stand.
That wave was an answer to prayer. Unlike all the other waves that crashed over us (dragging us further out and separating us), this one brought us together and closer to shore. We walked out of the water and I gave my sister a long hug.
I learned many lessons. One of them being that panic can happen at any moment. One moment my sister and I were laughing and having fun, the next she almost drowned. I also thank God she was able to control her breathing and not breathe in any water.

Yall are wondering if the cave floods fully at times? The answer is yes. A man by the name of George who sump dove this cave before showed up to the ranch and told us all about this cave. They dove it while the cave was flooded up to the ceiling so go during a wet time of year if you want to attempt this. Yall are so right about the murky water eating up light. caving or spelunking is a blast. I grew up in north GA. There are so many caves there. We used to get off work from the Cracker Barrel @ midnight in Cartersville and head to Rockmart cave before they closed it off and a couple of others that were unfortunately closed off due to vandalism and preservation. It's a shame people ruin things and take away access for people that are respectful. Of course there's the safety aspect too. I was a dumb teenager exploring and very lucky nothing catastrophic happened. I followed some basic tenets (multiple lights, never alone and always a known route with ropes/markers). Knowing what I know now though I was still reckless.

i was terrified when i went the first time. i used some old gear a friend had that he taught me how to use that day. we went into a 40+ foot deep spring-fed lake with a grate over the spring entrance, a very beautiful clear sandy lake. i watched the fish swim around for what felt like hours it was pretty cool. until it was time to head out i inflated the BCD a little to start floating to the surface but it failed and let out most of the air. i sank to the bottom, my friend saw this and came to help. we removed some weight and i was able to swim to the surface. with no experience diving and using old gear, i almost panicked when i started to realize i was going down instead of up. if i ever go again i want new gear and some proper training in a dive pool. i was lucky as nothing major failed, i was with a friend who was trained, and the lake would have been easy to get out of if i had to crawl out.

That moment when he panicked, I worked with a guy who described how easily you can die like that. He was saying in some sections of cave the water is so close to the ceiling you float through on your back with your nose brushing the rock - panic and try to float upright and you're dead, as all your breathing holes are underwater. Make waves, and you're in real trouble, as the water will easily slosh up to the ceiling. He personally got lost doing such a section, and had to float back the way he'd come, essentially blind - and all the while keeping very very very calm.
    In short. Fook dat.

There are multiple other cameras pov on the other accounts of part 2. Mineral Dude is the guy that partially drowns, action adventure twins is the lead with the spare air. All the screaming and splashing happens behind him and he just... Doesnt care. He keeps going. Thats why everyone regroups, sees each other bleeding and coughing and says "where's Everett?". Underground explorers and underground adventures also have cameras.
This whole situation is like the archetypal "trolley dilemma" come to life in slow motion. What are the ethics of encouraging 2 different people who are currently safe to go into this cave to save 7 people from more danger?
The weather report said it rained yesterday in that area and is going to continue raining through tuesday. I wonder if that area under the cement cap fills all the way up? The land didnt look like a dry riverbed so it might actually be a siphon if the water gets high enough, just now they are stagnant sumps.

Another gem of a video. I love hearing the opinions of cave divers regarding dry caving. Ear dippers are not too tough to get through so long as you move very smoothly and slowly. If you move to quickly you generate waves and reduce the air space.
When draining a sump to get through it, you should always wait a few hours to see how long it takes to fill back up before proceeding. Caving can be a really rewarding activity that is very safe if done properly. Joining a local chapter of the National speleological Society will put you in touch with many wonderful folks willing to teach newcomers the ropes both for the sake of safety and conservation. These guys seem like they know what they are doing. But they sent the wrong guy into the dipper. Go slow and never hesitate to say that a passage may be beyond your level. Always good to have at least one older caver along, they dont try to get you killed as much, lol.

I replied to Matt several times to contact the NSS for his local grotto. And look at who we brought in lol. I'd love to see a team map the whole system.

Definitely think it's a stretch to say they "knew what they were doing." I think one or two of them did. Obviously some of them did not.

It depends on the animals in the cave. I was thinking the same thing, certainly it's not ideal for them. Since it didn't go completely dry, some of the aquatic life could have survived, but things like eggs that are immobile could be killed by the drop in water levels, the increased turbidity caused by all the silt they are kicking up could also be a problem, as could the trampling. Sometimes, you'll get really rare species that only occur in one particular cave system, so I feel like a lot more thought should have been put into pumping all that water out.
I'm a biologist by training, but focus mainly on plants and rivers, so folks who specialize in caves and troglobite species could have some more nuanced information.

FYI The real reason why glow-in-the-dark equipment isn't used is because glow-in-the-dark items aren't magical, they need to be charged with sunlight for a few hours in order to glow. That makes them near useless as permanently installed cave equipment after the first 15min.

Hi gents! If you fall off a subway train platform and land on the tracks, you can climb under the platform and avoid a passing train. There is a cavity running underneath the length of the platform (opposite side of the tracks from the electrified third rail) with enough height and depth clearance to accommodate an adult in the horizontal position. Get under there quickly and you can completely avoid the passing train! Great show!
