Woody nailed it. Unless a person has actually been in this situation we have no idea what we would do. All we can do is train for scenarios that are similar and then continue to drill on those scenarios…
Even the best meet their end with just one mistake or bad luck, so yeah I won't judge. But if you're in a sport which has a high percentage of death I would rethink if this hobby was worth my life.
@@Navy1977literally this sport 😂
@@Navy1977 This sport, free climbing and wingsuit gliding. Almost every pioneer has died at this point.
@@dredgewalkertalk about being way off topic lmao
Make your own content instead of reacting to someone else's else don't make a video at all
I’m one of those fans that show up for the “Death” videos. It’s not so much for the morbidity, but the seriousness and the meeting of professional and casual informed discussion you to have. You two are great speakers in your own way.
ME too!!! There is so much to learn from respectful discussions about ‘what could have been differently’ that I find very interesting, & potentially useful.🤔
(Yes, I admit there is some morbid curiosity on my end, but I think that is a normal part of being human, since it ultimately will affect ALL of us. Death is the great equalizer, but it seems easier for society to pretend it won’t happen to them.)
Mr Ballen is the reason why I became interested in cave diving and how I found Dive Talk
Same!
Same. And adventure twins
Mr Ballen and this channel are the reason I'll never set foot in a cave or dive as long as I live!!! 😆
U did not become interested in Cave diving. The algorithm chose for you. You are only interested in screen.
I found Mr Ballen thru DiveTalk
This is eerily similar to the OffTheRanch video you guys reacted to 3 days ago, dude was in cold water, swimming through a flooded section, couldn't find the exit, started to panic, and then he nearly drowned. Just goes to show you how easy it is to drown in a cave like this and how close that dude was to actually dying.
Additionally, it only takes one person to drown or panic in a tight spot to drown every person behind them
Wait, did I just catch a brand new dive talk episode at 6am on a Monday? Maybe my day won’t be so bad.
I second this! 🤣
Honestly yeah
I didnt even notice this was new. I thought I was watching an older video 😂
Fr getting ready for work and I saw this day started good
Love this comment soo fkn true😭
I’m from Utah and remember this. There was scratch marks on Jen’s body. They were desperately trying to get out but her body was blocking the exit
I remember this too...sad.
Mannn the guys who decided not to do it, even up to the last moment, were very lucky
But imagine going out with your best friends and two hours later they're all gone. I mean, sure beats the alternative, but still must be pretty rough
Lucky or smart ?
@@bettywillbrowse Smart for sure.
I've seen people panic JUST from cold water when they've never been swimming in it before. I can't imagine how terryfying it would be to be in the cold, dark water with no experience.
I'm a fairly strong swimmer, and I remember the first time I jumped into a river in the middle of Spring, on a sunny clear day, that was just cold because of snow melt. After about 10 second the cold hit me and I just clung to my raft for a while not really able to do anything other than grip the ropes before I got my wits back and climbed back in. That was the day I discovered what cold shock was.
If your not prepared for it cold water can sap the life from you in moments.
I show up for the death videos admittedly. This is really morbid, but my grandfather (father's father) died in a diving accident when my father was only like, five or six. I enjoy listening to you guys talk about diving accidents because the whole thing has kind of been a mystery since the '70s, since body recovery wasn't possible then and my grandmother passed in the 90s. So it's my weird little hope that one day I can actually piece together more of what happened for my dad's sake. Neither of us know a lot about it. Hearing an expert perspective kind of contextualizes what sorts of things can go wrong on a dive.
What the pity is, when authorities have to block off a cave, the local animals no longer have access to the water. People ruin everything.
Depends how they block it off. In states like Tennessee the gates usually keep only larger animals out
It never fails to amaze me how the sense of invincibility, the lack of life experience and knowledge, coupled with peer pressure kills so many young people. I'm amazed I survived those years myself.
That underdeveloped prefrontal cortex really matters I guess.
That's why we have parents to teach us what they learned not to do. At least in a perfect world.
I genuinely love this channel, I know practically nothing about diving. Except what you guys have talked about and it’s just such a chill dynamic between gus and woody, keep it up guys!
I heard another video talk about this. They said there was bad air in the cave that probably led to their death. Breathing in bad air and attempting to swim back probably caused it. I heard in the other video Jen admitted this cave nearly drowned her the first time she went through. Idk why youd be like 'oh this cave nearly drowned me, let me bring my friends!' Not sure how true that is but i have seen another video about this
Man, that flash of greta with your voice saying "how dare you" had me cackling. I love your channel. Thank you, as always.
If those guys didnt say behind nobody might have know how they died. I wonder how often that happens where someone just goes missing and its some situation like this
@5:30 "Steven unfortunately had to work the next day." No, Steven fortunately had to work the next day.
Really depends how likeable Steven was
I’ve been binge watching yall and Mr Ballen all night and morning bc i have a medical procedure im anxious about tomorrow. Yall soothe me. So excited for new upload. Sending love and light always. Stay safe yall 🖤🖤
Don't be anxious that's the only thing you have control over
Good luck for your procedure 🙏
Good luck!
Thank you 🙏🏼🖤 I really appreciate it 🥹
I hope you feel great relief when you’re done, and that the procedure isn’t anything too serious and you’re all good! ❤
I remember as a kid seeing a UK army recuritment advert on tv, where this dude pulls a friend from a flooded tunnel during training. It scared the living daylights out of me.
This story brings back that old memory. Such a rough way to go. Great vid as always my dudes
Probably good to keep in mind that they may have even been drinking that night considering their ages & may have been intoxicated at the time as well which would have altered their decision making & reactions even more. Either intoxicated or sober, this was definitely a sad story & end for such young lives lost.
I watch these videos to help me with my claustrophobia and it’s been working. But, this scenario is absolute nightmare fodder. Such a sad situation.
For Fuck's sake, GUS! I was drinking when you made the Thunberg joke! Now my whole desk is covered in tea😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
I just watched a video yesterday where I guy went cave diving in Hawaii and only used his cell phone in a baggy for a light! Needless to say he dropped the phone by mistake and ended up dying. His friend desperately tried to save him when he found the phone by sadly he did not find him in time. All I could think of how Gus and Woody always have four flashlights at all times.
I actually live next to this cave, I've always known it as Gollum's Cave. If you look that up you can see actual pictures of it. Unfortunately most of the caves and mines around here have been concreted and or buried since
That was the name i knew it as also. After this and nutty putty the well known caves and Many mines were sealed up.
its cause the BYU kids keep getting themselves killed in them.
A great start to the week! Two of my favorite TH-cam channels in the same video, Dive Talk and Mr. Ballen!!! 👏👏👏

Love the videos fellas! I'm going to be going into rehab in a day, and you guys bring me light and happiness even in a time of overwhelming darkness. Thank you so much and Mr Balling for the videos!
Congratulations and best of luck to you my friend ❤️ you won't regret it
Good luck! It’s a very hard but worthwhile journey!
Yes, such a happy video!

@thesmilingdog6108 I am going to be thinking of you. I know you can do this! I will not lie, it's going to be a little rough. I was I intravenous user for years for China white I never drove. I know some people who got In trouble, I also know that you're strong and will make it. Sending hugs and prayers
I know I always say it but it’s the 2 things I fear the most, being in a cramped, very small space and drowning. I’d rather have my head chopped off! Lol great video guys and great input! 👍🏻😊
I love your videos, you make people with no experience stop and think and question themselves critically 'How would I react? Would I survive?' Then when they come across something like this cave, they become the voice of reason. Keep up the fantastic work, You guys and Mr. B. Allen are absolutely awesome people for all that you do for your respective communities.
6:08 Edit for the synchronized “Beef Stroganoff” hahahah love you guys hahaha
Nothing better than starting the week off with an awesome dive talk video.
Also, it’s so true that without realistic and continuous training, you can not count on any reaction you will have in an emergency like this.
Also maybe don’t go cave diving on a whim at 2 in the morning…
I love seeing Woody's mind getting blown by watching other people's cave blunders.thnx for covering these guys, I always wonder what you would think 🤘
Something else that might affect the fourth swimmer’s decision could be if they identified something in that pocket being a problem. If the group was in the pocket and said something like “it’s dangerous in here because there’s not enough oxygen in here”, that fourth swimmer may have automatically and immediately written-off going back into that pocket as an option.
What an awesome birthday present! Thanks for the great and consistent videos from you guys! Be safe!
I love how informative you are and the human sensitivity displayed in all your videos. Just as amazing is how your following reflects this same respectful treatment over the situation and lives being remembered, with outstanding majority of comments aligning with this ethics. May God keep it this way, a healthy place to educate and share, as well as safe for those that knew the victims. I hope this dignified manner of approach fatal/near fatal mistakes becomes the norm 🙏🏼 Shout out to you guys 🎉
Actually I’m so stoked for all the future happenings of the demolition ranch situation! I love your positive stuff.
React recommendation: the plura cave dive accident, there are some aspects to that story that i would love to hear your take on. There was some info on diver dropping regulator and his friend put it back on and purged which may have been a fatal mistake.
Wait how would purging a regulator be a fatal mistake?
@@wondertyzipp8260 i understood that he had gulped water in his mouth and was not ready for purge and it pushed the water into his lungs, im not sure thats why i asked for their reactio 😅
@@ALLNevada ahhh okay that does sound plausible to be honest. Rare but definitely possible.
Hey guys I just wanted to say thank you for your thoughtfulness and clarity as experts when explaining the potential dangers of diving or even spelunking. Recently went snorkeling and on the swim back there was a current against the direction of where our boat was. one guide asked if i was ok to swim back since i can swim, i was like yeah! so he got our other 2 family members who couldnt swim and went ahead of us (all of us were wearing life jackets). Literally a minute later i raised my hand like “wait i need help going back actually” bc i could literally feel myself get tired & i wasnt making any progress swimming and immediatelt my brain went “experts say to understand your limits!!!!! dont overestimate yourself!!!!!! It could be dangerous!!!!!!”. We werent even diving, just snorkeling, but it was still open sea. I had another family member with me who also could swim, and when i called for help they also called for help & told me “i was getting tired too.. yeah we need assistance” 😂 so thank you for what you do!!!!
Just out of interest..how does one go snorkeling when they can't actually swim?
@@Danica.Powelli’d imagine they meant more in the sense that they weren’t “strong” swimmers rather than just flat out didn’t know
@babyboyren Yeah, that makes sense actually. I would have not wanted to swim in a strong current because whilst I can swim, I'm not a strong swimmer so I would have needed help too!
Them breathing CO2 or let's just say _bad air_ does explain why they were all right on top of each other in the tunnel and why the 4th person didn't turn around. Maybe they realized there was no turning around. Personally I'd rather have the stroganoff.
As always incredible commentary from you two. I've learned so much watching this channel. Appreciate all the content.
My favorite videos of yours are the ones that are near death, but everyone gets out alive. Unfortunately, those are pretty scarce, because if you're close to death while cave diving, it seems that you're probably gonna die. I think my favorite video on this channel was the one where the diver got left behind on the surface of the ocean and filmed what he thought was his last moments, but then got rescued. It's those stories of risk and adventure and courage in the face of catastrophe that I love.
Of course, just like everyone else, I'm suspectable to the allure of the macabre.
Two of my top favourite TH-cam channels at the same time !! I love it. ❤😂
First time to catch a video as soon as it’s uploaded. The downsides of living on the other side of the world to you guys! 😢 the only reaction videos I watch, you actually add a lot of info and understanding to the stories. Sad as some of them are.
The hills outside of Salt Lake are covered in holes and mineshafts. One must be super careful hiking/skiing/biking. It could mean your life…
I love you guys and your content and I love as much mr b Allen content. Seeing your reaction to his videos is just the Best ❤
Oh man that’s terrifying, the first girl might have realized the air was thin but had to wait for the other three to come through, then she went back first and passed out/gasped part way and everyone’s fate was sealed.
Never underestimate the power of beef stroganoff. Thanks for covering another MrBallen video. I love both of your channels and have learned so much. I just love your video thumbnails. LOL - the dramatic looks on your faces all the time. 😮😱
Pretty wild hearing stories of friends. I grew up with Jen. It was after a local concert. I had a crush on Ariel who was one of those 4 that died. I was trying to convince her with other friends to go hop apartment pool gates to go swimming until we got kicked out. Something we did, not sure why. Ariel decided to go with Blake, Scott, Jen and one of the members of a Colorado band that played that night. They went to this cave often and I went once. Got into the whole, felt the rope and said, no way I am going under the water and pulling my way through. The thing left out of the story or maybe I missed it, was that the rope broke on the way back. That’s what left that guy from Colorado by himself. I don’t know who this “Steve” guy is, but it was a large group of friends.
Woody knows the audience too well. 😂😂
Seen that MrBallen story already, but it's always nice to get your insight on those topics! Greetings from Germany!
Perfect way to start the week, with a dive talk vid!
Based on the description to me it sounds like the air pocket didn't have any oxygen left so they all turned around and tried to make it back. (Impossible)
I'm sure in addition to drowning, there was probably quite a bit of kicking happening in people's faces while panic was setting in. A TRULY horrible "hindsight is 20/20" set of circumstances. They were just curious kids, not trained spelunkers or cave divers who get trained on how to avoid panicking. Such a sad story.
Just recently discovered this channel a few days ago and it’s a nice refresher seeing content that spans back to as far as three years ago of just the same consistent informative and entertaining reactions like this more recent one. Just had to put this comment on A video of you guys. Also Woody’s one line quips are hilarious 😂 “alright well what I’m thinking is..let’s dive this”
I must admit I 'love' the death title. Since my own father drowned (and he was the one who taught me to swim), I love learning about deadly scenarios ti avoid in case my own children decide diving is their hobby.
I don't dive, or ever want to. But Gus and woody talking bout it makes my day ❤
Same, these make me never want to go diving
I love when y’all react to a Mr Ballen video, two great channels
Found your channel a few days ago and have absolutely binged it. Fascinating stuff. And might I say, your weight loss is commendable Gus. Looking great.
Perfect timing. I woke up for work and i see this in my feet. Thanks guys!
These cave stories are EXCITING AF!!! Mr. Ballen is a master and you guys are the best duo!!!
can we crowd fund a space heater for woody, the guy is in doors with 8 layers of clothing on
There are more videos out there and apparently it was more than just co2 buildup in that area. There were a whole bunch of other gases. They turned around almost immediately based on medical exam/ time of death. They also said that Jen couldn't find the hole going back the other way because the rope broke and her body blocked the way out.
Thanks guys for the video and knowledge!
You guys really knocked it out of the park, I remember when you all had 20K subs and you just constantly grow. I hope you all can visit up here in Nova Scotia at some point and do some scallop diving!
5:55 aw man beef stroganoff one of my top 5 meals. Love it! ❤
I would love to see a video of you two explaining and breaking down your diving gear and how you put it on- All these videos make me aware that I have veyr little knowledge on the actual technical nuances of diving
Thank you Gus and Woody 🥰❤️
Yes, a nice rainy morning with Dive Talk 👼
The death just brings out curiousity , honestly. I am not a diver but ironically have been free diving in my lake for 20 ish feet to grab rocks and silly stuff this summer. Its very interesting. MR Ballin is always on one though, dude is entertaining.
Thank you for making this Monday so enjoyable! Good morning
Holy hell Gus look at you! Love the life style change I’m seeing!
I remember a video way back where you mention Woody enjoying the tight sections of the cave, well now you should too!!
I sent this story in a few times so happy you covered it :)
Good morning guys! Thank you for making my whole week.
Love this channel!
Didn't see the title, just saw the thumbnail. Thats all I need to watch, cheers lads.
I'm early... and it has 'death' in the tittle .... j/k my biggest wish when I see a new notification popping up is seeing a video tittle akin to "So we went to the Abandoned Resort in Texas, and we've went after the question mark' ;)
I mean, even if it doesn't flood completely, Gus it's time for you to start dry caving and take us along expanding your horizon 👌
Let's go I'm strapped in an ready love the mr b & dive talk videos ❤
Great video to start Monday morning!!!
The “How dare you” had me dying 😂
I just found your channel. You guys have awesome and informative content
This is why water , being under it, specifically in the dark or open ocean really is the only thing in the world that I am truly fearful of .
What about it’s inhabitants?
@@Dr_Puggles what are you even talking about?
Had me laughing my ass off with the "what are you an idiot? As they head into the cave"
It’s midnight but I’m watching anyway. I don’t even like caves but I like watching you guys talk about them 😂
Hi! Just wanted to say Gus you are looking great!! I haven't watched in a while and noticed you had lost some weight. I'm on a weight loss journey myself right now and just wanted to say it is inspiring! Have you noticed any differences while diving? Wasnt sure how much it would impact it. Thanks again for the great videos!
I want to be a fly on the wall when yall are taking the thumbnail shots :D I love them.
Mr BAllen is an amazing story teller, I enjoy his channel
I think they did the right thing by sealing this cave, why take the chances of others dying
This scenario has almost no chance of survival. Sounds like something simple turned deadly real quick.
"We All Believe We'd Run Into That Burning Building. But Until We Feel That Heat, We Can Never Know. You Do."
Really want you guys to react to the Plura cave incident. I feel like you guys could bring a lot of context to that one.
It’s annoying mr. Ballen is getting disowned by his own community. The guy does such great work and he helps a lot of us keep our sanity at work while listening to his story’s. I’m glad you guys are constantly showing him some love.
I grew up, but when I had infinite time I watched Ballen all the time
@@Dr_Puggles he has a Spotify. I just listen to him at work
As soon as he started the spotify channel he became different.
It was too corporate for me.
I stopped watching as much when he did that.
I don’t blame him and I still like his stuff but it changed the vibes a lot.
Even if the two guys made it back to the pocket once they realized they were blocked in by the drowned woman they would probably still succumb to hypothermia and hypercapnia before rescuers could get to them.
Imagine if the last guy went in, no one to call for help. Imagine if the 4th swimmer swam back to the air home and was the only one to make it. Crazy story. Thanks. Mr B is the best.
Happy to catch the new episode early!
wow… how long? about 4-5m? that is crazy… i wouldn’t even dive through it if it was only 1m… no no no… you have to imagine how 4 bodies must have stuck together given a rounded avergae size of 2m. they must have all paniced and only went forward… :( and the tunnel/cave was not very wide…
The only thing that doesn't quite add up; the first one is stuck part way along a 15 foot tunnel but how would that leave enough tunnel to accommodate the remaining 3? By the sound of it that's more like 25-30 foot than 15 to me.
The greta thunberg “how dare you” had me dyingggg 😂
And i myself find I cannot hold my breath near as long in cold water compared to holding your breath in warm water. And I can hold my breath even longer if i was wearing a scuba mask.
A sad and tragic incident.
The main issue was none of them were cavers, so they didn't know what they were doing and made some silly errors which ultimately cost their lives.
One of these is that a chamber entered via a sump and with no other exits may have bad air as the guys explained, so you don't dive through unless you have your own air supply.
Another is that when going through a sump with a fixed rope you always go one at a time and the next person only enters when the passage is clear, the standard signal is the person who's just gone through giving 3 tugs on the rope when it's okay for the next person to come through.
They weren't properly equipped either, handheld flash lights instead of proper caving lights that leave your hands free, no wet suits or even a caving fleece & oversuit to keep them warm and prevent hypothermia, etc.
An experienced, sensible cave would know these things.
FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN TRYING CAVING:
Caving is a fun sport and everyone I've taken has loved it, even several claustrophobics!😀 Despite what YT videos, etc may suggest it's also a relatively safe sport PROVIDING you go with someone experienced and use some common sense. Whilst occasionally someone is just very unlucky, the vast majority of caving accidents are preventable and are down to not following good caving practice.
Fun fact: In the UK 50% of Cave Rescue's call-outs are actually for hikers, 25% for animals (mostly sheep, cows & dogs) and only 25% are caving related. Of these most are simply overdue parties. Of all their call-outs they only go underground for 4%!
For anyone who wants to try caving contact your local caving club for advice. Many universities have a club too. I have provided some links below for further advice form the BCRA (British Cave Research Association) which novice cavers may find useful and includes contact info for British caving clubs, what you will need, etc:
newtocaving.com/
For those who want to try cave diving I advise trying dry caving first, even/especially if you're an experienced open water diver.
Statistics show that cave divers who started as dry cavers have a better safety record than those from an open water diving background, perhaps because they're already familiar with the environment and because they haven't picked up bad habits from open water diving that aren't appropriate and may even be fatal, in a cave. This includes how they set up their gear, e.g. side mounted rather than back mounted tanks, etc.
Dry cavers who convert to cave diving also have a different mentality as their aim is to explore the WHOLE cave, both dry and submerged passages, whereas as those from open water backgrounds rarely leave the water so they don't have a full picture of the environment.
Here's a link to the CDG (Cave Diving group, which is the oldest and most experience cave diving group in the world. The British cave divers, like my friend Rick Stanton, who carried out the 2018 Thai cave rescue are all members of CDG. Also for Martyn Farr's site. He runs a cave diving training course in Britain, has written some amazing cave diving books and has lots of cool videos of his dives on there.

This cave was only 11 minutes from my house. There was a rush to seal up some caves after this followed by the nutty putty cave death only 50 miles from each other and 2005 and 2009.
Dude gesticulates too much, I can't handle it
I have anxiety and claustrophobia just hearing about the 15 foot underwater entrance… I have no idea how that intrigues people. Y’all crazy.
What I don't understand: the passage is 15 feet long, how can there be 4 people stuck? Let's say the guys are 5.9, that's almost the whole passage. Let's give the two girls 5.2, that's another 10.4. So together we have a over 20 feet line of people got stuck in a 15 feet tunnel. How
It's very likely that in their panic they wedged themselves into each other and thus taking less space.
@@neues3691 Yeah but they found her half way. So that's 7.5 feet, if she was stuck half way, there's not enough room for even two more people. I think it's more likely that they went into the air pocket, there was barely air, they started to panic, tried to get out, had no air and suffocated. The first girl tried to get out but couldn't get far without air. But that they all were stuck, it's just not possible with a 15 feet long passage and 4 people. If they were kids, sure. But not as adults
