  • Today we react to a caving video from England. THis took place back in 2014 and depicts a small team of cavers exploring passages inside Lost Johns Cave. One of the divers gets completely stuck inside "The Tube" and starts to panic as water rises towards his face!

I'm a plumber and have been in a few claustrophobic situations. The one that comes to mind the most was doing a water repipe underneath a pier and beam house. There was only about 13" of overhead clearance in the back part where I was working and on top of that there was fiberglass insulation all hanging down and completely obscuring my view to the exit. It came on suddenly and intensely I was surprised at how quickly panic took my mind. Began hyperventilating and suddenly everything around me began to close in and get tighter, I felt like there was no oxygen down there (ridiculous in hindsight of course there was plenty of oxygen) and I just started kicking and freaking out and trying to back out the way I came but became stuck for a few moments due to my own panic that's when the fear really got me and I ended up kicking my coworker in the face to get him to move lol. He's a friend and didn't take it personally but let me tell you when panic sets in it completely takes over. I felt that there was a tipping point when I actually let the panic in, I could have remained calm but I just let the unreasonable thoughts win and that's when you lose control

Right? You'll see videos of Gus talking about how calm and controlled he is during his dives. He doesn't panic, and he's self-assured. While he's saying all this, video plays of some of the most claustrophobia-inducing 100+ foot depth madness my brain can healthily digest without hyperventilating myself...But even before the first step in the Lost John's cave journey: "NOPE!"
ALSO: in that same video, (I want to say it's when they're reacting to MrBallen + Mike Young...can't be sure), Gus mentions that it's critical viewers don't get the wrong idea that cave diving is ultimately too dangerous and therefore shouldn't be tackled. But in THIS video, he's all about the fear-mongering haha.
My initial thoughts as to why this is: Gus places more fear in gravity and his own physical ability to defy it (climbing/repelling), over drowning, maintaining neutral buoyancy, calculating correct gas mixtures, planning spare tanks, placing 100% trust in maintaining connection with guidelines, decomp stops...it's bonkers to me, but he just needs more confidence. Not much, I'd say. Cave diving is fraught with dangers.

Gus is an instant dry-caver - just add water! :)
Btw I get why dry-caving seems horrible to him. In diving you don´t have the risk of slipping and breaking an ankle, or breaking a foot, or falling into a crevasse. Also you feel weightless, you can move with much less effort. In a dry cave "ascending" is hard work/ climbing. In diving it is floating - which feels safer since you don´t have the feeling of " I don´t have the strength/ energy to do that and I´m going to get stuck". And yes I know, that swimming requires some fitness, and that (technical) diving gear is heavy and you also need at least some level of fittness to do it and move around cylinders all day.

2 years ago I found a hole in the ground, under a cliff. Since all holes lead to adventure, I decided to explore it, expecting it to end after 5-10 meters. But it kept on going and going. After crawling for ~ 100 meters and passing through a squeeze were both my back and chest were touching the tunnel, I found a big room, pristine, with a 10 m high ceiling and full of speleothems. It was pure joy! And that's the beauty of caving (besides pushing your limits).

@@alanhillyard1639 It's a personal judgement call based on how tight it feels and what you see in front of you. If it gets tighter and tighter with no end in sight, that's when you back out. The most important part is to remain calm. In certain squeezes you may move centimeter by centimeter (literally), which is normal.
There are 3 important rules when crawling through tight spaces:
      1) have at least one arm in front of you (I always have both of them in front of me) so your cross section is smaller and you can use your arms to push/pull yourself

I do scuba dive (just open water) and I think a big difference between dry caving and anything underwater has to do with the feeling of being weightless. It's almost like floating. From this perspective, I totally see the difference between wet and dry caving for Gus. The difference has less to do with claustrophobia and more to do with how much work it takes to crawl on your belly or get out of a jam in a dry cave versus wiggling and frog kicking while weightless.
The two ventures do share a lot of commonalities
    -strong social communities
-a necessity in being a team player
-importance of proper planning and training
-benefit to calming your mind and thinking "How can I"
-an appreciation for the natural world that is only seen by a small handful of people

The thing about dry caving is that you can push the extremes of tightness further, and that's what they do, making it way more claustrophobic. You don't "squeeze through" stuff in underwater caves because that will risk your equipment and getting stuck for even a while can be a death sentence already.

I loved it, I’m small enough to fit through all of it however, I’m a little claustrophobic. I’ve went crawling through a cave on my knees and climbing over cave walls but to be on my belly crawling I don’t think I could do it. But awesome video!!! Love your energy!

I love that cave! Those narrow sections remind me of the first cave I've ever done in my life when I was 12. It was a really safe cave yet we went through an unofficial entrance that wasn't really known (even to our instructors who were ex-military). The first 10-15 feet were just legs to one wall and back to the other to descend and then just follow the narrow tunnel till we found an opening. For us, new guys it was presented like we are discovering a completely new cave found while setting up a zipline in the mountains but our instructors knew exactly where we going. At some point, we went into the main cave where a tourist was (our section was blocked by red tape not to cross ;)) and when we were going deeper I as the smallest person went into a tiny crack in the rock and found the last "dead end" with a nice big opening but between the crack and that opening, there was small crack going down (it was around 1 foot wide maybe a little bit more). Amazing experience, the cave was really easy, I've done it in a t-shirt but some parts were a great adventure!
BTW. the whole camp thing which was survival as I did only that kind of camp since I was really young was canceled after this one as it was called too extreme, which is a shame as it was the best survival experience in a safe environment you can have. Hand made beds in military tents in the middle of nowhere, my first mountain climbing (I couldn't make one section where you have to wedge your fist in a crack as my fist were too small), jump on an aerodynamic rope (which is like a bungee but you're tied by your waste and swing under the bridge), paintball inside the abandoned bunker where you had to rely on your hearing as it was pitch black and much much more, all that having fear of heights that only gave me more adrenaline and thaught me I love to be up there or down below.
And as always, love your channel guys and I'm 30 now but want to do diving more and more (there is never too late to start)

LOOOOL I was watching this thinking, huh I just went on my first caving trip, it was great fun, I loved it - it was to Notts II cave in the Yorkshire Dales which is directly connected to Lost Johns - which a load of friends did while we did this other cave connected to it. I'd definitely love to see Gus down this thing. I'll be right there with him.

An older guy told me long time ago two wise things,..one concerning Caves and the other concerning Motorcycles. As for caves he said, "If you ain't a Bat or Batman, stay out of caves". And for Motorcycles, he said, "There are two types of Motorcycle riders, those who've been in an accident, and those who are gonna be in an accident". I listened to what he said.

I'm with Gus on this one. There's extra factors to dry caving vs underwater cave diving. For one the hight and knowing you could fall down a huge drop. You can't fall in the water. Also the climbing, descending, ascending and "parkour" you have to do vs just having to swim is also another scary risky factor 😬

More people die in underwater caves than dry caves. You ain’t dying under ground in dry caves unless you knowingly make a mistake. Underwater too much can go wrong without your own factors involved. Too many mechanical issues could arise.

Love to do such a cave. Most of my caving experience was during Uni, which is over 20 years ago now. Since then my main activity switched to climbing. As such being able to combine a cave with some long pitches like this would be great. I had some experience of using SRT (ascenders and descenders) back on Uni but a majority of what I did didn’t need ropes.

I never laugh so much watching videos as I do with Gus and Woody's stuff. Gus insisting he'll never do something and Woody ignoring him. Gus stating he'll never try to wedger himself through those tiny cracks when I literally just watched a video of him wedging himself through a crack smaller than him--while underwater. The crack about at some point you have to get to the Earth's core, OMG. -- "They could be a hundred feet or more." "It's like a thousand feet." -- "What do you do right now if I break my leg from this point in the cave?" "Shoot you in the head and walk out. It's the only humane thing" -- "Look at this guy, leave him, he's dead" -- LOL. You guys are hilarious.
