    31:45 there’s a difference between fasting at home relaxed, safe, and able to sleep….. versus fasting while in a life threatening situation, constantly using energy to keep yourself in a relatively safe position in the cave stuck underground.
    Although I agree they would probably be fine after a day… but the lack of sugar (low blood sugar) while in a life threatening situation would definitely put you at a higher risk of succumbing than someone who was able to eat to keep their strength up.

      Yep, plus the cold that Gus said they should be more worried about also takes energy to combat. Since I don't get hungry (autism powers /s), when I haven't eaten for a good while the first indicator of it is when I get way colder than I should be.

    For reference, this accident was in 1988; most of the footage here is just generic B-roll stuff. No CCRs, no Sidekick, not even any sidemount, no RUVs, and no laptops even would have been used back then. 'Sanctum' (2011) may have been inspired by this incident but it's just a drama based on being trapped in a cave. For example, I don't think any of the guys involved in the real 1988 incident actually murdered each other.
    Food rationing: yeah you can go a day without food. My military survival training taught the same 30 days for food and 3 days for water, depending on climate and exertion.

    Truamatic experiences like this hit ppl in ways they never dreamed it would. I'm not a diver, but I've come close to death in a couple different situations, and I know from experience that it can make you not be able to put yourself back into risk of being in that same situation again. I had a really scary experience dry caving when I was about 18- and I developed claustrophobia as a result and to this day- many decades later- have never stepped foot into another cave- and never will. If you put me into a spot where I can't turn and see what's around me- I freak out, start feeling like I can't breathe, and then this unbelievable need to get out arises and I will start fighting and panicking. And it wasn't even that bad of an incident to be honest- we ran out of light about a mile underground. Long story short- we bought a bunch of cheapo Walmart flashlights and tried to explore a local cave- none of us being cavers or having any experience with it. And like I said- they all died, one by one- and left us in complete darkness in a place where we had zero hope of ever finding our way out. Luckily, another group came in and we walked out with them, but we had spent about an hour in the dark trying to figure out what to do. About the time we saw someone's light coming, things were starting to get ugly- ppl were starting to panic and blame one another. And this is not a high traffic cave, this is a cave hardly anyone even knows about- so the chances of another group coming in like that were so small it's insane that it happened and saved us. The group said they went to church nearby and had been talking about coming and checking out the cave after services for weeks- but for some reason, that Sunday- they did it. If they hadn't, I wouldn't be typing this- I'd be dead and no one would've even known where to look for us.

      Yeah, you can't predict in advance at all. You can even go through multiple experiences and not develop PTSD and then have something that doesn't even seem as bad happen and wham, PTSD. Our brains are just weird. (Also remember that it's *perception* of danger that is the issue, not objectively how much danger you are in. And danger to other people can also trigger the same sort of issues.)
      It's not associated with how calm you are at the moment, either. I have PTSD and during the incident that cause it I was completely fine.

They did close the cave I was talking about to the general public though- now you have to have a state permit- issued by the Tenn. Valley Authority to go in- and they only let researchers and certified cavers with experience inside. It's a miracle we made it out without need of rescue. Just one of the many stupid things we did as teenagers.

    I also went a couple of days without eating, just fluids, when I fell ill with a lung infection during a trip in Cuba. I was active everyday, even went hiking in Escambray Mountains. As long as you keep yourself active the hunger goes away. It's definitely a weird experience. You eventually have to force yourself to eat once you hit a certain stage. That's the hard part.

  • @craigbikes8831
    @craigbikes8831 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    the lack of hunger while fasting is due to a bodily process called "autophagy" which literally means the body starts eating itself. Basically you start to metabolize energy stored in glycogen and fat, which is why fasting can be an effective way to lose weight if done correctly.

      Unfortunately it isn't just the narration. It's gotten advanced enough that the ENTIRE process is automated. The voice is AI generated, the dialogue is AI generated and even the video editing is AI generated. The bot is fed a theme/information for the video and is supplied clips, then, when the video is edited together, it generates a narration for each edited bit of the video for it to plausibly fit together and be coherent. There may be some human editing and tweaking made to the final product but since the channel of this original video is terminated, I don't know how lazy this particular channel is.
      You'll see this notoriously with the current "movie recap channel" plague. The content farms using this tech is getting really atrocious and so long as they can profit off of it and people continue to watch it, this problem will only get worse.

  • @leighannlivingston1271

    In order to "stay calm" while facing death, you have to have already come to terms with your own mortality, which most people have not. I think people who face danger and do things that entail high risk are more likely to have accepted the fact that they could die doing these things. They want to live, obviously, but when facing a life/death situation and reaching calmness... there is a level of detachment from survival that has been internalized. Overcoming desperation and panic for humans is extremely difficult and requires some intense mental and physical training.

    Survival, like diving, has a rule of 3s. 3 minutes without air, 3 days without water, 3 weeks without food and 3 months without shelter. There is always an exception to those rules, like trained free divers who can hold their breath for 5+minutes. More body fat will translate to more ability to go without food, this is why women tend to fair better in survival situations and explains why Gus feels more comfortable fasting than Woody. The downside to this is that once your body starts to consume itself it will devolve to very dangerous consequences when you go from burning fat to burning muscle. Even having access to food will not help if the food has no fat as you are unable to process protein without fat. This is known as "rabbit starvation" as people in survival situations who manage to catch lean meats with no fat, like rabbits, will continue to starve to death no matter how much they eat. Shelter can be as simple as being dressed appropriately to creating a temporary structure or carrying gear meant for the purpose. Water is the one true hard and fast, zero exceptions.

    Woody you can easily go a day without eating. Once you get past a certain point you no longer feel hungry and you actually feel really good. I can feel my brain working better and I hate to mess it up by eating b/c I'll crash after. Its almost a euphoric feeling. At least for me.

    imagine if in the future they had diving equipment that could take oxygen from the surrounding water, like gills on a fish, so you never need tanks anymore? the only thing stopping you from being able to dive for as long as you like might be based on how oxygenated the water is, or if whatever makes the oxygen available to you runs out like a chemical or something

    • @Nefville
      @Nefville 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That's a good idea. Its electrolysis. I'm not sure how it would work and if you'd just be swapping gas for a large power supply or perhaps it can be done chemically, like a fish. Then there'd be issues filtering out salt or minerals, where do they go and don't forget you're making twice as much hydrogen as oxygen. Have to dump that. You'd also have to pressurize the oxygen and then what about nitrogen or helium or just air? With electrolysis you're creating pure oxygen which can be toxic in too high of a concentration. I think its worth exploring but there's definitely some big challenges that might leave you worse off than before.

    • @tigrecito48
      @tigrecito48 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Nefville how do fish gills work though? someone would need to study how they work and replicate it.. im not sure you need to pressurise air if its created while ur at that depth, it would already be at that pressure.. i bet if someone like an expert on diving collab'd with some really genius science guy like NilesRed they might be able to come up with some solution?

    • @tonfleuren3536
      @tonfleuren3536 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Nefville Fish don't breathe the oxygen in the water itself (so the oxygen in H2O), they breathe dissolved oxygen in the water.
      It doesn't really make sense to replicate this though, as the main problem is that pure oxygen is toxic at depth (beyond 6m/20ft), so you need to dilute it with another gas (generally nitrogen and/or helium). This means this diluent gas has to be recycled continuously, otherwise you would need to bring large tanks, completely defeating the purpose of getting the oxygen from the water. To recycle it, you need to remove the exhaled carbon dioxide, which is what the scrubber in a rebreather does, and supplement the oxygen.
      The oxygen tank on a rebreather isn't very large, commonly only 2L or even less, and that can last longer than the scrubber. It doesn't make sense to replace a 2L tank with something much more complicated and less reliable.
      Now if we could find another way to remove the carbon dioxide, by somehow getting that to diffuse into the water sufficiently fast without losing the other gasses...

    The eating thing also depends on your level of activity. When I was younger, I got a really bad infection in my mouth and refused to eat for about 5 days because it was just uncomfortable to. I slept through most of it, and woke up on the 6th day feeling fine. My mother ended up getting me to sip on a fruit smoothie after begging me for about 2 hours. Best smoothie I've ever had to this day 😂

    something I've been wondering while binging your episodes, and just truly curious, haven't dived yet, but really fascinated by the whole science of it.. but the question that I have been wondering, when you are in the ocean.. compared to being in a fresh water cave, due to the volume of water in the ocean is the pressure change more than if you are in cave? if the cave water isn't coming or going directly to the ocean? just something i have been wondering this whole time any info is appreciated :)

    Ah? First, fantastic channel. I am living cave diving through you two with the science explained, just well done.
    Ok, how many tanks can a diver take? Is it limited by human physiology? And why don’t exploring divers stage tanks as they go, just in case if not them then another could use? Does the “tri-mix” have an expiration date?
    I could look it up but hearing you two answer would be greater.
