they know what they are talking about and are able to dumb it down enough for me to understand without being condescending at all. one of my reasons for subbing even though i have no clue about diving at all.
Agreed, there is a difference between arrogance and being confident in your knowledge on a subject. Especially when lives in are involved, its a no games type business. And should be approached with a military like reverance.
No man likes to admit the panic factor but, well, that's why I won't do this sport. I will panic. For sure.

Certified full cave in 2000 and I didn’t set foot onto Eagles Nest property for 13 years …. Well worth the wait and the experience I gained in that 13 years of actively cave diving was priceless when I made my first dives at the Nest !!!
So, do you suppose so many are impatient to, well ---- dive into caves, out of arrogance ("I'm an instructor" or "I'll be fine if I only go a little ways in" or whatever they say to justify doing the thing that they're explicitly warned not to do) or ?? They are warned not to go into caves without proper training, and *still* they do it.
edited to add, it's like they lose track of the basic truth that water isn't our world. The fact that we merely *visit* an alien (in the sense that water is deadly unless we bring air/gas), is part of the reason that people dive.
By that point I had several hundred cave dives and quite a few certifications beyond “Full Cave”… Advanced Nitrox, Decompression Procedures, Trimix 1, Trimix 2 … just to name a few. Things were much different then than they are now though …. Primarily, rebreathers weren’t in common usage then so everything was done with open circuit equipment

I am the furthest possible thing from a diver 😂 (Disabled and stuck in bed most days) But I have found your channel so fun to see into a world I’ll never be able to be. I can tell how much you guys care about safety and everyone’s true enjoyment and respect for diving. Keep up your kindness and honesty. 😊

So... funny story. I started my diving journey when I was 17. About a week after I started my lessons, my dad (a certified cave diver) gave me a book. It was a book all about people dying while diving. As I've heard many aviators say, The rules are written in blood. It really highlighted the seriousness of the hobby and offered some great lessons. I think the number one lesson I took from the book was: Never attempt something beyond your training.
Way too many stories of open water divers dying in caves or wrecks or something...
I panic for a second if my arms get stuck taking a tight t-shirt off.... that's why I suppose I'm fascinated - it's like watching a horror movie from my perspective.
Gus, you are looking very healthy! Great job with whatever you are doing. Your reaction to our Eagles Nest visit in 2020, coupled with the loss of our friend last year REALLY gives me some haunting time to reflect. I just hope that more and more people can grasp what you are telling them better than we did, before they experience a VERY TOUGH lesson. As we gain experience in our diving, many do feel a sense of "Oh, I'll just go do this real quick...". It is too damn easy to fall into that mentality and justify or minimize things that we just SHOULD NOT DO. We have found ourselves victims of preventable circumstances and unfortunately, you don't see it coming until it has gone past the point of no return. I just pray that new divers and newly certified cave divers will be more diligent than we were and heed your advice.

I was scared of cave diving, now I have a rational respect of it. I have a basic understanding of rules I had no clue of before and the most important being to not dive outside of what I’m trained for. This is all because of y’all. I know plenty have said it but don’t worry woody and Gus, y’all are doing great.

You guys are great man. I wouldn't worry about what others THINK. Those that watch and have ANY amount of empathy can see that both Gus and Woody go above and beyond to show humility and say "this is what I would do" or "We don't know what all they knew". ANYONE with empathy can see you are both good guys. You can't please everybody.

I get lost exploring a wreck in subnautica and panic. Cave diving is not for me but I find it fascinating to watch.

To me you come off as reasonable professionals, nothing less, i wish i could be your student because of how professional and properly cautious you are.
I work in mining and every procedure and rule we have is there for a reason. Unfortunately a great many of them have injuries/tragedies behind them. It is sad when people find out the hard way why some rules are there. RIP to the two poor men and condolences to their loved ones.
My chief engineer got his arm ripped off by a water tight door on a container ship
He thought it was opening but it wasnt
After he said he had made a small lapse of concentration and not followed the correct procedure
They open and lock and the green light goes on, always follow procedures
Eagles nest is a different level of Florida cave diving. The depth is really the biggest hurdle. Dives to 300+ feet require training beyond just full cave. It’s a bucket list dive for me, but I know I have many more cave dives and much more training before even planning this dive. I’ve been diving for 20 years, but this is definitely beyond my skill level.
I watch the channel this video came from. He does his homework, always very informative. That being said, you guys add your own views and experiences and this video in particular was an awesome one. I think you guys do a great service to others that may want to get involved in cave diving. Cheers.

I discovered this channel randomly and instantly became fascinated. I absolutely hate water so I know I will never cave dive, you couldn't pay me to do it. But I love every video you guys put out and find the knowledge and opinions you share are invaluable to anyone wanting to start diving. Not to mention you guys are hilarious! Don't change anything you're doing, just keep diving and have fun!

AND you are clearing up common misconceptions. I would have NEVER considered diving, let alone cave diving. I live in land locked missouri. I was always taught that the ocean was a death trap.
I have now visited Florida multiple times as an adult. I have even gone snorkeling with rehabilitated sting rays...im now considering taking diving classes on my next trip...and thats thanks to you guyz. . I now share my love of the ocean with my kids. I don't want them to fear something so magnificent. All I tell them is...be aware of your surroundings, never panic, listen to instructions, never think you are above the rules, and RESPECT mother nature and what she has created. I feel like you 2 are saying the exact same things to your viewers. Some people just don't like the truth.

In response to your final minutes concerning how the audience interacts with your reaction to these videos…. Please don’t ever stop talking about what went wrong! ❤Y’all are always so humble, making sure to acknowledge your own shortcomings, you acknowledge there is often missing context to these videos- but overall I have never sensed any form of condescension or tone that should insinuate your superiority over others, nope! I don’t hear or see it in either of you, I see confidence and that can often clash with audience members that have their own variation in opinion or understandings -about what is being discussed.
❤Don’t stop reacting, it’s why the majority of us are here.
An urge that many cave divers (and wreck) have when seeing a possible "lead" is to go take a "quick look" with the idea of "if it goes" they will then go back to the line and tie off an exploration reel and then go back down the lead. It's REALLY tempting and I won't even claim that I haven't been tempted and even done (I learned not to do the hard way).
It's a REALLY BAD habit, the quick look can turn into a low vis situation REALLY quickly and the outcome REALLY bad.
If you see a lead, take the time to tie off a reel and use it. If you find doing a tie off and reel takes too long than the truth is your reel/line skills are too weak and you need to start practicing more. With practice deploying a reel, doing the tie off, doing your look then reeling up and untying back at the main line won't even add a full extra minute.

For me and I believe I'm not alone if I say you are guy's who dive by book and no cutting corners as we say in UK things twice do it once. You are great example to know how to dive. I really enjoy watching your channel, it helped me learn so much about open water diving & cave diving. I think you guys do a great job highlighting the importance of proper training and practice. You are both very humble towards the sport. I personally was a scared fan of deep diving even though I am a great swimmer. But I now understand how much prep goes into each dive. Also Gus, you make this channel funny and more entertaining. And we can all we the transformation your going through. You are a lot smaller and I'm sure it makes you feel more agile in the water and healthier in general. Keep up your good work. But don't get too small man, the bigger Gus gives you the look of a nice and kind version of yourself. Also its amazing how raw and in edited your videos are. Good teamwork to woody too.

Safety rules are written in blood. Kind of common expression, but I feel like it's a million times more true for (cave) diving.
And the last point, regulation usually isn't the solution. People are going to break the rules. What you need to do is educate them about the dangers.

In firefighting we would do things like a right hand wall search, following along the wall, feeling for any openings, corners etc. just wondering if there’s is something similar when looking for a line if you lose it
Yeah, pretty much!
My understanding of cave diving is that there is no room for 'mavericks' or risk takers. It is a long studied and practiced hobby that has build up a set of ridged rules and lore that must be followed to the letter, there is no wriggle room. But cave diving really does show how humans are, we have accidents, make mistakes and take risks. However much more information gets put in the rule book there will sadly be deaths every year due to humans being human. Sad they died, they never intended it, the fear and feeling of isolation must have been crushing.
I remember the very first time I went into a cavern in blue grotto. The fear of not having clear skies above you is real and sets in fast!
I’ve been watching you guys everyday since I randomly stumbled upon your channel a few weeks ago. Thanks for the great content! I’m not a diver and I’ve never been interested in diving but now I’m hooked. Maybe one day I’ll take a recreational diving class but for now I’ll stick to telling my husband random diving fact’s I’ve learned from my pals Gus & Woody!

I can tell you as a diver that panicking underwater can be very easy to do. That’s one reason why your training and constant retraining is so important.

@Steve I had just settled down with all my food and drinks.. decided to surf TH-cam and their video came across the timeline
"A total of 161 divers who died were identified, 67 trained cave divers and 87 untrained. While the annual number of cave diving fatalities has steadily fallen over the last three decades, from eight to less than three, the proportion of trained divers among those fatalities has doubled" this is the exact quote that the Divers Alert Network gave. Having training and experience doesn't mean your life isn't at risk. You have a 5% chance of dying everytime you go in that water whether your trained or not that 5% will never go away
Whenever they show a grainy picture of you, you know you’re dead.

Ginnie Springs is part of the spring fed flow that blesses North Central Florida. It was a float down the Itchetucknee, a swim with manatees. Ponce deLeon called this cool fresh flow through a sweaty salty land...the fountain of youth.

I really find your coverage on Cave diving highly interesting. I've been watching this channel for some time now. These videos you do are so entertaining to listen to and the best. I love the stories and breakdown you do explaining things. Its just great. Please never stop doing these. You mention alot how gear and training is very important when it comes to diving. Especially Cave diving and that's a given i would think. One thing i dint hear you directly mention much on is how important someone's Mental Health is when it comes to diving. I feel Mental Health can be an even bigger importance in cave diving.
You can have all the right gear on and the best of training but if something was to happen and your head isn't right and or able to deal with such pressure i feel that could end someone much faster then faulty gear because that's what you need if you do happen to have an issue with your gear. You need to be mentally sound so one doesn't panic.
Having the best gear in the world wont save you if you panic and don't stay calm to solve the problem. I respect the heck out of divers for this simple fact. "Wish more people in our world in general would be just as calm above water too"😁
J/k's aside. I would have loved to go and learn how to dive. Just to experience that underwater peacefulness that i sometimes have dreams of. I have always loved the water. Sadly my health would never allow it now as i got older. So i regret not going to learn when i was younger.
None the less, is it possible to train someone enough so that in the case something does happen they are able to overcome any panic or fear? Or would you say someone who has this issue would be too risky.
Training definitely helps the vast majority of people...there are always a minority that will panic no matter what, and there is also a minority that will never panic even as they face certain death...but the vast majority of us can be trained not to panic.

I served in the Military and though i never served in a combat zone or have been put in a life or death situation we did have training that i feel has taught me to stay calm in un favorable situation. But at the same time I cant imagine how tough it may be to train and teach the panic/fear out of someone given that its all underwater. Much respect.
Mount Everest of underwater caves is located in Czech, called Hranicka Abyss (or Propast'). I'd say it's even beyond Everest, 'cause, literally, no one can reach the bottom. Recently they've sent ROV/AUV robot, it reached somewhere about 1500 feet, but the cave goes farther, it's not the end! They will modify the robot, but this cave can go like 10x deeper, than the Eagles nest cave! It might even bottomless, literally. The water there is highly carbonated and acidic, which makes it extremely difficult and dangerous for exploration.
Florida has mountains! Or do "Space Mountain" and "Splash Mountain" not count?
Im not a diver, never have even done a basic snorkelling lol but i truly love your videos. You're not pompous, arrogant, narcissistic or high egos ...you are constantly teaching, supporting, offering advice for trim and improvements or what went wrong or could be done better, listening and on so many occasions even on the typical what went wrong disaster bad diver videos, you still try and see why they took the actions they did and don't just berate them but acknowledge what was also done right.
My advice is just you be you because you're both amazing and in 100s of the comments ive read its clear you actually help so many people by listening to what you say in your videos. Not once do you think you know it all and constantly say you are always learning.
My son wants to be in the Navy and is enlisting soon and is even looking into Seals (hes ambitious 😂) but at least ill be able to tell him not to panic, comment on his trim and maybe teach him a thing or 2 about diving despite never diving 😂

I watch your videos to learn about diving, and especially cave diving, and I watch your videos because I want your input. I don't watch your videos to watch another video together with you, I watch it to get your qualified comments and opinions. If it were up to me you could pause even more and be even more focused on the technical aspects of diving., but I'm a nerd. ;-)
I'm also very glad that you are so focused on training, planning, safety and that you explain what you can and should do if x, y and/or z happens. The more information I get the more comfortable I become, and I have gone from "I NEVER want to dive in a cave" to "Maybe...". I am now strongly considering taking a basic course in open water diving, and if I do that and after some years I have gained a lot of experience and become comfortable under water in all open water situations, I will not rule it out the possibility of me start taking courses in cave diving.

7:26 I agree, when I saw my first video about Eagles Nest I couldn’t wrap my head around why anyone would go there voluntarily. I couldn’t let it go and searched for any channel that could clarify things for me, and I found you guys, and today I understand on another level. My father used to be a diver, first in the military and later he worked with diving for electrical companies placing cables through massive lakes. The lakes in the eastern part of Sweden are deep and pitch black one meter down. Unlike my father I suffer from claustrophobia these days, and know I wouldn’t be able to do what you guys do. Still I find it fascinating and can’t stop watching!
Like Gus says, almost anything can be dangerous if you are not trained for it. Growing up with a father that was a diver me and my sisters learned how to swim from an early age, so swimming isn’t dangerous for me. But if you throw a person into water that has never been taught to swim would probably drown, which would make it dangerous for that person. If I were to go diving and not having any training or knowledge about it, then that would be dangerous for me. The cave wouldn’t kill me, but my own ignorance surely would.

I couldn’t go snorkeling. Yet alone cave dive. I tried snorkeling in the Keys close to shore and just to get use to it. Swam out and all the sudden the ground disappeared and it was a void. I had reached a cliff like edge. I freaked out and began swimming towards the shore. That’s when I knew… nope. Now I’m scared of the ocean. Too big and unpredictable. I’m good on land. I enjoy these videos though.
Great video guys, some really good points with the sometimes caves can be safer. I can't say I've ever looked at it that way.

I live on the edge of a florida lake that drains every several years and its crazy to think there are men exploring under water caves beneath my home.
The way you feel about diving responsibilities, is the way I feel about firearm responsibility. America was founded on freedoms. Enjoyed the video. As a past certified cave rescuer, and a LONG time ago, certified PADI diver (although I only went a couple times after cert.), I always wanted to combine the two, but never did. I guess I'll live vicariously through your channel. lol.

I think your videos are great! One thing I’ve been wondering about- when exploring a new area of a cave and you go through a squeeze, what’s the plan to get out if you can’t advance any further? No way to turn around or swim backwards!
I've had some things going on lately and haven't been to your channel for a bit, and WOW Gus, you look wonderful! Seems like you've slimmed down and just look generally healthier. Not that you didn't look good before, but I know how tough it can be to get any weight to budge and try to build more muscle, ESPECIALLY once you've gone beyond your 20's and early 30's. Congrats for what I'm sure is a well earned change for the better! It's always motivational to see others getting healthier, particularly in the face of the dark "pandemic" BS the world has just been through. Woody and yourself are so amazing to listen to. Once you’ve had a panic attack, you need to explore why you’ve got anxiety. Do you have heart problems and need beta blockers? Do you have a stressful job or marriage? Do you have PTSD? What’s really going on with you? You don’t want to be uncontrollable in a dire situation. If I’d ever had a panic attack in an aircraft back when I was a Jumpmaster, I’d have been very alarmed and would have sought serious help before putting myself and other jumpers in danger.
I think it's where training and experience comes in, and why it's so important for activities like this. It's also important to understand what a panic attack or anxiety is, and what might trigger it. So my first parachute jump was a simple static line jump from 6,000ft. I'm not really a fan of heights, but it was a 2 day course with a drop at the end. All was fine, I was confident, until I was sitting on the floor of the aircraft and we were climbing. Then I was 4th out, and remember clearly getting more and more nervous as I was shuffling closer to the door. Then sitting in the door, legs dangling out, I was turning to the instructor, about to say "I can't do this", they said "Go!", and I was gone. Then once I'd landed, I wanted to go again.. And many jumps later, with a few malfunctions along the way, I think I've managed to overcome my fear/anxiety. Which is natural, after all you're abandoning a perfectly serviceable aircraft.
But I also dived, and booked myself on a cave diving course. I dry cave, and wanted to try cave diving. I'd heard about Eagles Nest, and I wanted to dive that.. But I realised my problem. It's not really anxiety/panic. I've dived, I've caved, I've climbed, I don't mind taking risks, and I loved exploring. But like Gus and Woody said, cave diving is a different beast and an incredibly unforgiving one. So with things like the rule of 3, I'd be tempted to dip into my reserves because it's going well, I won't need them and I want to see what's over there.. which is something you just can't do in a cave. Maybe I'd get away with it a couple of times, but that would probably lead me to take more risks, then end up on a video like this.
So I figured cave diving isn't for me.
I think anxiety is natural, and there are drills and techniques for managing that, along with recognising dangerous stuff like being narced. Having a routine helps I think, so check comp, check gauges, check line, check buddy etc. All fine? All good. I think those routines help overcome anxiety because they focus your mind on what you should be doing. If something isn't fine, then it gets a whole lot easier to panic, but that's where the training kicks in and what to do in that situation. It's also where experience helps enormously, and you develop a kind of split-brain, where part of your mind is focused on the job in hand, but part is also keeping an eye on your subconscious. So monitoring stuff like breathing and heart rate, and if that's starting to spiral, focusing on getting that back under control with breathing or meditation tricks.
I suffer severe panic attacks because of ptsd but I'm typically very calm in an emergency situation. I just get hyper focused on what needs to be done. It's strange. You'd think emergencies would set off the panic attacks but it's often when things are calm and relaxed that I get anxiety and panic attacks.
love this channel, i dont dive what so ever I've only ever gone snorkeling and i got rly bad sea sickness lol but i absolutely love this chanel its sooo educational and very interesting to hear these guys talk they rly know their stuff and it shows! i would like to do an open water dive one day (maybe) but the whole thing scares me so much lol i would do a dive as long as i can shoot straight up to the surface if i get scared so maybe like 10-15 ft max depth for me.. these guys are crazyyyy the type of stuff they do takes extreme bravery! mad respect to these 2!
The remaining calm and handling the situation logically reminds me of being an EMT. You absolutely cannot panic or the situation would get out of control very quickly.
