    I get it why people are upset about the frequent releases of devices. I got my first boox device (Nova 3) after noticing your channel and seeing your videos. When the Nova Air was release, I was a little disappointed because it looked like the much better device for my needs, but I couldnt economically buy another device at such short periods. Now I have been watching the release schedule and planning on getting a 10 inch device, and am really glad to have outwaited the releases till the 3c and got it a week ago. So in summary I dont see the need of the frequent releases, still very happy with my nova 3 and wont replace it till jt is broken - or a friend or family member needs an ereader urgently :D - same plan for my note 3c. Thanks for all your work, your channel is amazing :)!

    I purchased and have been using the Tab Ultra C for a few months now after being a ReMarkable 2 user since its release. I really wanted to love the Boox device, and am still finding ways to use it in my workflow, but I’ve really been disappointed in its performance. It has seemed clunky and slow to me out of the box. I really thought it was just personal preference until I saw these results. Thank you for taking the time to put these devices through their paces like this.

    My concern is _'battery life cycles,'_ how many cycles can they suffer before battery performance drops off? Because if you can't replace the battery [?] this issue going to greatly diminish the longevity of the likes of the _'Note Air 3 C'_ when compared with other e-ink devices... and should be considered before purchasing.
    Do we know the cycle count of the batteries in these devices? If we do then we should be able to anticipate the lifespan of each device with low, moderate and heavy use.
    As Boox inches every closer to being a PC replacement, maybe this is something you can add to your excellent *'Deep Guides'* as its becoming relevant.

    • @karsten2
      @karsten2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      From 2026, all manufacturers in the EU will be obliged to enable battery replacement. Either by the user themselves, except for devices where this would be a safety risk for the user (e.g. medical devices), or to offer a battery replacement. An exception only applies to devices that are “predominantly” used in a humid environment - which does not apply to eInk devices.
      I'm curious to see whether these regulations will also be accepted by chinese vendors. At the moment there are a lot of devices with built-in batteries from them, e.g. thermal cameras.

    Dear Voja, I think a video on obsolescence is great. As much as I am into technology and love to buy new devices, I am now practising buying technology that lasts longer. Instead of buying a new Boox device, I decided to buy a Supermode A5X. Here, I was convinced that the company continues to develop the software and maintains the devices in the long term. I hope that Boox and similar providers will follow suit or at least provide security updates to ensure the long usability of their devices.

    • @pcti4106
      @pcti4106 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. BOOX has released another group of best in class hardware along with their usual modest improvements in software. But with this new release, has BOOX finally caught up or surppassed the note taking capability that the Supernote has had for months/years? I doubt it. And I'm not going to buy any more new BOOX hardware just to find out.

    • @Isa-rh1pl
      @Isa-rh1pl ปีที่แล้ว

      I still have a Boox Note 2, with which I never had as much fun taking notes as I do with my Supernote. As a big eBook reader, though, it still does a very good job of handling all the apps I read with. I think the time for updates for the device is over now. 3 years though is no age for the hardware, so as long as it doesn't break, it won't be replaced.

      @MyDeepGuide  ปีที่แล้ว

      Why exactly?

    • @user-li1mj1jx2j
      @user-li1mj1jx2j ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@MyDeepGuide If you're asking why it seems shady to me, then the answer is that it seems like they're either sending more powerful devices to reviewers (even though they denied it but that doesn't mean they're being honest) or they're distributing more powerful devices to markets they deem more lucrative (you're in Norway, so maybe they're going after purchasing power).
      If you're asking why I'm thinking about cancelling my order, then it's because on one hand, I'm not sure whether I should support intransparent business practices and on the other hand, I don't want to run risk of ending up with an obsolete device when they release a Note Air 3C+/Pro before Christmas or so lol.
      Unfortunately, Boox is currently the only brand that makes devices which handle reading (especially PDF's and dictionary support through android) and note taking equally well and you don't have to make concessions in regards to one or the other.

Other thing is the storage is not for the SoC, is because the speed of the storage (UFS 2.1, 2.2, 3, etc...). The amount of ram is almost useless in eink devices (I had a bigme ink color plus with 6gb ram and tuc performs way better in real life). Any way is good video and very interesting. Hi. I have the opportunity to buy a used tab ultra (not c) on the “cheap”, (around half price of any of the “current” new boox offerings). Is there anything that makes the Tab Ultra not desirable on that price range? Or, for this price it is an acceptable device? My plan is for reading academic articles (pdfs) and taking notes. Besides that, as an extra, I’m attracted by the fact that I’m not bound to one ebook store (kobo or kindle), which would be a feature in all boox devices.

    I am a bit miffed about the whole 2.4 vs 2.8 thing (yup I received a 2.4 and I DO care about the ~17% perf difference), but other than that I am quite happy with with my Note Air 3C so far after 3 days use. Writing experience is awesome especially with smart shapes and smart select. MicroSD = Yay! Battery life sucks but is comparable to normal tablet. Unexpectedly, I find watching video with color EInk with BSR to be easily tolerable for news-like video and whatnot since ghosting of grayscale/color channels are somewhat independent of each other so ghosting artifacts more easily appear as visual noise instead of as multiple layered grayscale images (BASICALLY: brain gets less headache discerning objects in color video with ghosting artifacts compared to pure grayscale since the artifacts do not line up as much)

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's not a 17% difference. Math is quite different here, and this is the reason why I am doing the investigation and data collection, so that we can see what the difference really is. But you should know that those CPUs have two core clusters. Cluster 1 is at 1.9GHz on both (so, identical), Cluster 2 turbos up to 2.4 or 2.8GHz in different CPUs. So it's a lot less than 17%.

    • @pipe2null
      @pipe2null ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MyDeepGuide You are quite right as always, and I sent you benchmarks for all the test apps used in your video. True, overall system-wide perf 2.4 vs 2.8 is not much difference no matter how you look at it, but 17% perf for perf hungry threads can be noticeable, but always individual use-case dependent. I'm attempting to get eInk in Note Air form factor as my daily driver for everything, so 2.8 is better for me, but 2.4 is not deal breaker. Saying goodbye to my Ultra. My beef is that I verified with 3 different reviewer channels prior to purchase, so I was expecting to get 2.8 GHz since that is what all 3 reviewers received for review. Thanks again for your great reviews!

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's exactly the question I am asking myself here as well. Ok, a mess can happen, but how is it possible that not a single reviewer didn't receive the 2.4GHz version, and the majority of versions that users have are the 2.4GHz versions? True, some users got the 2.8GHz versions as well, but with the reviewer units. Then on the other hand, there is absolutely no correlation that I can so far see from stores, or serial numbers which device would be 2.8GHz, and which would be 2.4... I need to wait for even more data until I can see some kind of a pattern emerging, if there is one.

  • @kw4358

    I don't care much about performance differences because after using a device for a while, your brain gets used to its performance and you adapt your user behavior to it.
    But I do find this constant updating of devices predatory because they feed on people's proclivity to FOMO. Sure, everyone is responsible for the purchasing decisions they make, but we very well know a good portion of users will FOMO and buy.

    Can someone summarize the 2.4 vs. 2.8 CPU-Problem? Is it correct that the NA3c comes in 2 versions by luck either with 2.4 or 2.8 ghz (unless you are a streamer, then you will get the 2.8 :-) ? Sure, 2.8 is better, but could 2.4 even be advantageous for the batterylife?

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I am currently doing an independent investigation on the issue and gathering data from real-world users to see if there is a way to get some meaningful conclusions from that. But the early indication is:
      1. It's the luck of the draw, has nothing to do with reviewers, as regular customers end up with 2.8GHz versions as well.
      2. The frequency difference reporting is only for the Cluster 2 of the CPU, so only 4 cores of the 8 will boost differently. The primary cluster is identical in all instances.
      3. There is a very slight difference in performance results (in favour of the 2.8GHz version) but we are talking about minor, synthetic differences that will not be perceptible in a real-world scenario.
      4. I don't have the measurements, but if there is a difference in battery life, it would also be imperceptible.

    I'm always impressed by boox devices, but at the same time they have this weird aura around them. Chinese companies are often seen by the CCP as an extension of chinese nationalism itself. So I always feel double buying Chinese electronics and you never know another trade war or worse will cut support for these devices. The way these boox devices are pushed on the market at an astounding speed only aggravates the ecological question. However I feel this is a valid strategy for a company and it's partly up to us consumers to take that into account when deciding for a device. If ecology is important for your decision making then it incentivizes Onyx to do better or gives the competition an opening. I also feel that governments need to do better in levelling the playing field worldwide: impact on the environment can, up to a certain degree, be quantified in a cost (IE what it takes to negate that impact). If that cost is included in the price, the ecological alternatives like supernote that focus more on longevity and recycling become more attractive and thus forces Onyx to revise its business strategy which might no longer be viable.

    • @bellissimo4520
      @bellissimo4520 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Actually, I think Onyx currently has a simple reason for releasing so many new devices in such short time. Selling hardware is their main, if not only source of income. They have no expensive subscription services, software sales or peripherals ecosystem comparable to Apple and co. It's not good from an environmental point of view for sure, but it makes sense from their economic point of view. Actually, people also keep changing their smartphones every 2 years or so, despite their current ones still being more than good enough... so, the problem is really wide-spread, and not limited to e-readers.

    • @maximeselleslagh3878
      @maximeselleslagh3878 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bellissimo4520 yeah I agree, good point on the hardware side. That's why I said that for them it's a viable business strategy and thus they're really doing nothing wrong. If we want to change them we have to make them change that business model by taking that into account when deciding for a device. But honestly you can't expect people to constantly make moral decisions just like you can't expect companies to make them when we live in a competitive world. If being moral means losing to the competition then the game is already set. It's up to governments to make the rules that limit business strategies to not take an immoral route. Consumers can only communicate openly about these things so that the most grievous of immoral business practices can be punished, but after that it's up to regulation. We contribute as a society of course by making ourselves heard such as by voting etc. I feel like you would need to write a thesis about this subject to properly address the complexity of it.
