This is a highly skilled trade. It's not easy working that drop forge with such big pieces. It does make me upset that they are not provided with a decent heat shield. That's a very dangerous thing to do. If you put these guys in a modern shop they would turn out amazing work and get a lot more done than most people these days can.

What the video doesn't show is how many of these men get injured and killed. Not one piece of safety equipment to be seen in this entire place. No safety glasses, no boots or helmets. They're all in sandals and wearing clothes that can get caught in machines. No safety barriers. Nothing. My heart goes out to people who have to work in such conditions to keep body and soul together.

Very smart and expensive work that, and seems to be repeated work hence you have the right eccentric clamps, justifies the following:
    1) Invest in a non skilled worker to clean the chip
    2) overhead electrical crane
    3) portable lights
    4) googles for the workers
    5) Overall suits and safety shoes
    6) concrete floor and cement plastered walls of the workshop
Capital investment of the above is really negligible comparable to the transformation you will have. You never know, it might even earn you an international contract.

  • @stevenhorne5089

I like the way they take all this care machining the part and then just throw it on the ground and roll it around in the dirt. They never measure anything, they wrap a chain around all the freshly cut journals, and then just throw it into a pile on the floor. Have they ever thought about making a workbench and racks to store these boat anchors before they can find a sucker to buy them?

Did anyone figure out how they indexed each rod journal to make sure that they were 120 degrees apart? It seemed like they just eyeballed it.
If this is for a low speed diesel engine, maybe that's good enough. But the lack of precision measurement is weird to me.

@@henryrollins9177 i own a Indian made engine and had it apart to remove all the casting sand and swarf and fix whatever really needed fixing before ever running it, they really do run stuff that has just been eyeballed.. i had to remake the pin for the idler gear with a 0.060" 1.5mm off set to get the backlash somewhere where it wouldn't just hammer the teeth off the gears.. the backlash is much better now but changes as the engine is turned over because the gear on the camshaft doesn't have the hole in the center of the gear, it's about 0.010" .25mm out for memory.. lucky the engine is flat out at 650rpm or it would destroy itself in no time flat.. the engine i have is a cs lister copy and there well known to smash gears because of backlash issues and it's not uncommon to find a good handful or 2 of casting sand in the crankcase which is why the bloke importing them into Australia tells them not to test run them at the factory anymore.. i know of one of those engines that went to America that was test run and passed even though it had the keyway cut 180 degrees out on 1 flywheel (engine balancing is via a big weight cast into the flywheel) it was so far out of balance that it was jumping right off the ground when started.. gib key fitting for the flywheels is achieved by just using a bigger hammer rather than propper hand fitment like their surposed to be

I'm no metal worker, but I have worked with metal. Mostly threading conduit as an electrician, and some very small scale aluminum milling. Is it common to mill steel on this scale using no oil? I've never seen that before. Every time I've seen steel being cut/milled/drilled, its always covered in oil. Obviously this dry method works; these cats doing for a living. I've just never seen dry milling and wondered how common that was.
Great video, that is some tough work. Not only moving such heavy pieces with no crane, but in that heat. The heat is intense. I've run conduit through a foundry and it is literally like being in an oven. I wouldn't last a week trying to do their work.

Carbide tooling doesn't need lube so much. I only use it for parting off or drilling with hss bits these days. Watch Abom79 and cutting edge engineering. They don't use coolant much either. It is nasty stuff that effects the skin and lungs. Tends to be only used on enclosed CNC machines now.
