Great tips here, I just subscribed ! I have a tip or two to give : one, if you are a industrial maintenance worker or are a electrician who has to work on high voltage/amperage equipment never use fabric softener on your clothing, it makes them more flammable ( in case of a electrical arc flash) also you should wear cotton clothing, never polyester...way to flammable.
two: you should also clean the inside of your drier and all venting I believe once per year as the lint builds up quickly, dryer fires are fairly common.Thanks for all the great tips ! Bill
I hang most of my stuff to dry because it saves loads of energy. With towels, I hang them to dry until they're barely damp then tumble dry them. The cycle ends a lot quicker and the towels come out all soft and fluffy :)
Great video! One of the things I've done to replace dryer sheets is to take liquid fabric softener, mix 1 part softener to 10-ish parts water in a spray bottle. Give a wash cloth a few sprays and toss that into the dryer. It doesn't seem to coat the dryer the way sheets do but it does cut the static and any scent is very light. One bottle of softener lasts me about three years. I recently purchased the wool dryer balls and love them for fluffing up towels, kitchen cloths, microfiber cloths, etc. where I won't use any softener at all.
As for fluffing items that are hanging dry, outside in air that's moving is the best, or maybe a fan aimed at the drying rack or just shaking out the cloth a couple of times during the drying period. It's getting the fibers loose and dry that fluffs them up.
Regarding fire starters: a great way to recycle tp tubes is to put them in the laundry room to stuff lint into. Cram a few loads worth of lint in each one and store in a plastic storage bag for fires at home or while camping 😊
Hi Melissa...short story...my mother had a dryer fire many, many years ago. She always had cleaned the lint catcher but lint and fuzz had built up on the outside of the drum and that's where the smoldering started. Fire department came....advised her to once in awhile lift the lid and check inside and to also check the venting for build up..........I had dryer balls....bought them twice....they disappeared.....someone...not me....left them in the basket with the clean clothes and I think the dog finished them off. They are a good idea and I think it's time to get more....I like the wool ball...I'll have to look around for some and the foil...great idea. I frequently vacuum the dryer vent from the outside of my house. Even with the filter being used properly, I still manage to catch build-up between the machine and the vent. I also detach the collapsible (accordian-like) duct that connects the machine to the vent pipe. Probably saved my house from burning down.

After the items have air dried, just throw them in the dryer and run a NO HEAT cycle (mine defaults to 30 minutes but 5-10 minutes is all you need depending on the items). I do this every time for everything that I air dry: shirts, jeans, pants, delicates, etc. It removes the stiffness in the fabric, especially jeans!
same. but not with 'everything' I hang dry... only a few of those things.
I use distilled vinegar, about 1/4 pre load. It helps kill bacteria, brightens colors & whites, decrease drying time, to fluff clothes. I've been using the vinegar for about 6 years now. Because the vinegar is distilled it will not leave an odor especially if you use fabric softener like me. Once you use it, you won't go back, it's a laundry staple.

In Argentina we use starch liquid for pressing clothes. To avoid wrinkles, I put 50/50 of that starch and water and spray clothes as they go into the dryer. Not only it improves and softens (the comercial starch has silicone based softners) it's mostly wrinkle free as you pull it out of the dryer!

Hi, I have noticed that tennisballs, those fluffy balls, works as good as those dryer balls. Although if they are of the yellow kind it might stain the clothes. They are a little heavier and will have it easier to fluff out towels, pillows and duvets. And as a second tip, dont wash towels, kitchen towels, washcloths and microfiber cloths with fabric softener. It smells nice but it will heavily reduce the absorbing and will often just smear around the stuff you want to wipe away. I use a little white vinegar instead when washing these items to make them smell fresh.

also microfiber towels need to be washed separately from other fabrics, it is just the way they are, and do not add fabric softener to them and dry on low heat or hung outside to dry. i've heard tennis ball can damage you appliance, so be carefull!
I hang all of my clothes outside on the clothes line, and then after bring the clothes in, I put them in the dryer on air fluff, along with my dryer balls. Everything comes out soft even my towels. The color stay bright on my clothes.
You hang your clothes, in Buenos Aires we're finally embracing dryers for once. Most clothes with elastane and synthetics should not be put into the sun, so be wary of that!!!

When drying t shirts with fitted sheets,most times the t shirts end up within sheets and still damp and crumpled
Dryers heat can damage elastic & synthetics items, clothes are never left in the SUN ON THE Clothes line that long to damage, yousave so much cost drying outside
Hi Melissa, if you hang-dry your washcloths, wait until they're dry then take two sides and rub them together quite well.. Keep turning the cloth and rubbing it until it is soft. I also do this with towels that haven't been put into the dryer for whatever reason. Thanks for a great channel.
As always, love the videos. But it brought back a funny memory. My Grandfather was the home maker and always hung the clothes out to dry, winter or summer the clothes were on the outside rack, BUT....after the towels, jeans and even socks were dry (without softener) he would iron them. Drying off with a air hung towel that has not been softened and iron makes me LOVE my dryer even more! HA HA!! FYI: Still not used to the modern new washer...its smarter and uses less water than my plants. Love from CT!!!
Your new laundry room is awesome! Everything is so organized and the room is so spacious! The only dryer tip I have is when I dry towels I spin them on the highest spin speed and I've found they dry a little quicker.

Hi Melissa, great video, sorry no help for the towels when hanging them up to dry, but I did find a DIY wrinkle releaser on Pintrest that works great, 1 cup distilled water 1 tsp rubbing alcohol 1 tsp liquid fabric softener place in spray bottle lightly shake, lightly spray clothes, shake or rub clothes to release wrinkles, there you go. I use when I don't get to the dryer right away or when I pull something out of the closet that is wrinkled. It even worked on the hem of my husband's jeans.
💌 The no heat cycle is great! I had forgotten I had a no heat cycle and it works super for the Makers Microfiber cloths! I was so glad for the tip to dry them o no heat air cycle and they come out so nice with no wrinkles!Saves so much time!
Question: For someone who has physical impairments preventing hand cleaning the inside dryer, would it work to soak a few towels in vinegar, then dry them in the dryer? Thanks, Melissa. Your videos provide solid education!
About the matted wash cloth which was hung up. My Mom never put towels or terry cloth into her electric drier. She preferred to have the fiber ‘matted’. She said that when using the towels, they automatically give one a light massage and take off dead skin particles, and help for better circulation. So many times I hang out my wash cloths and towels outside to dry. And when they are slightly deformed, I just gently stretch them into shape and fold them like usual. Helps my skin, helps the environment.
My favorite thing about dryers is that they collect the lint off clothes. Clothes look better and the apartment stays debris free longer as less comes off of clothes.

I have wool dryer balls. I found they reduce drying time, especially for towels, but don't help with static cling. The foil doesn't work -- it falls apart from friction. Don't use it.
Thankyou. It is good idea. But what can we do for colour tolerance when drying? Can we use colour catchers in drying machine?
Back again with another question... my washer and dryer are on the second floor and tucked into a pedestal with a counter top. I watched your video about vacuuming behind the dryer. I can't easily get to the back. Any suggestions on how to do this task. I haven't vacuumed the back since we installed this dryer which is about 3 years. I am concerned about the lint. I am a new subscriber...love your videos.

I’ve never had a tumble dryer because of the electricity cost. The consequence of this is that my clothes seem to last a lot longer. Everywhere I go on my travels my clothes always seem to be a bit smaller and a bit crispier when the laundry service hands them back - especially evident along the seams. So at home I hang them up, and I recently acquired a dehumidifier to help keep the air dry and speed up the drying process. Works a treat. Towels aren’t so fluffy though, but I seem to prefer the sandpaper effect as I associate that with being freshly laundered!

Here in malta we hang clothes to dry cause electricity is very expensive but I always use the dryer to dry towels. Tried so many stuff but they still dry harsh on the line. Once l read a label to not use softner with towels but still if you hang them to dry they still dry harsh so better for your face and for the towels use dryer. Love your videos xoxo

I use softener and I do notice IT IS fluffier after washing. We only wash & dry right now since we live in an apt. Will be purchasing our first washer/dryer set soon for our new house! (yay!!!)
anyway. I use to wash only with detergent and notice the clothes would come out feeling weird. Eventually somewhat outstretched as well. So I started using softener (Snuggle) and notice there has been a big change on our clothes. Our daughter's clothes use to come out all stretched and deformed after washing with just detergent and feeling rather crunchy after drying. After using Snuggle it isn't deformed looking and is actually soft. Even taking it out of the washer it feels soft. My husband don't use softener and his clothes look old quick. I've also washed her blanket and stuff animals with the softener and it did come out fluffier. But after years of washing it (I think 2 years) it's old and matted up; I think that's normal though.
So for me, softener DOES work when we use it in the washer. My mom use to use dryer sheets and that actually makes no difference.
Also, because I use softener into the wash our wash cloths and towels come out soft and unmatted.
HI! How do you clean the inside of your LG washer? I'm worried about mold in my dryer too. I've read you can wipe the inside of the dryer with baking soda or bleach. Would you recommend that?

Get someone out to clean the dryer vent itself in a two story house. If you don't, it is a fire hazard and there is a chance that your dryer will catch on fire. In one story houses, you can usually clean it from the outside.
I have a question about dry cleaning. I have certain items of clothing that require "dry clean only" and often its very expensive to send every items to the dry cleaning service. do you have any tips on how to dry clean at home? thank you
I'm pondering between getting those electric airer eg. Houm Superdryer for my new home instead of a conventional dryer as I'm abit skeptical in frequent lint removal and oso afraid of having some of my clothes spoilt from all de tumbling n heating 😬
people always tell me to run clothes/fabric in the dryer for about 10 minutes before hanging them, and that will eliminate the stiff problem. the last place i lived in where i hung towels to dry was EXTREMELY windy, and on windy days the towels dried without any stiffness. i imagine the tumbling and fluffing are the key. i'm gonna try the vinegar in the rinse cycle trick that Shannon Vary suggested below.
My LG real steam electric clothes dryer calls for water when the reservoir is full and gives no steam. By chance would you know what the problem might be . Your video is nicely detailed, thank you.
In Argentina, dryers are hard to see and come by. I always hung my clothes and matting is something that gets solved only with the dryer. Unfortunately I can't drag my bucket of clothes outside anymore so I've invested in a washer/dryer that is a little tricky to use but works well. Yes, you save on electricity but you also save your precious back, specially when you wash sparingly. Underwear gets washed by hand and hung in an inside location. Thanks for the tips!
I tend to wash two loads every other day so I wash separated but dry as one load. for some reason, the capacity of loads for the dryer is higher than the washer

Warning about using tennis balls in the dryer!! I thought they were a great idea and would toss two in with towels to fluff! Guess what! They actually, over a period of about three months, broke off one of the fins inside the dryer!! Needless to say, I no longer use tennis balls!!
you are supposed to tie the tennis ball up in a sock/ stocking, or something similar.
For fluffing lined/hung dried clothing/towels. I will put the dried items into the dryer on no heat air fluff mode with the dryer balls.
What are your thoughts on airing out your home? My fiancé and I get into discussions over this regularly. He hates it and I believe it's necessary.

I do this trick if I'm using a dryer or not. Hold your towl (mainly bathtowels) horizontally. Where your hands r hanging g onto the same longest side, but close to opposite corners. With your arms held away from your body give your towl a flick. When done correctly you will here a snap. Much like a whip makes.
For an alternative to dryer sheets: I use the socks that have holes in the heals. I cut them in half. Starting on the top of the "foot" then working my way to the bottom then back up the back side of the ankle. When I need one I take it and dunk it in an solution of fabric softener and water (about 50/50) and a splash of vinegar (optional). Then squeeze hard and through it in the dryer. I also dry/wipe my hands off on the laundry in the dryer.
Another thing I've done when I had to pay to dry my cloths was put a clean, dry, bathtowel in with the load. Then shortens the time needed to be in the dryer. Sometimes I was able to get two loads through on the same payout.
Try sunning your clothes that have stains. It's been working for me. As far as the washcloth I know the feeling I have the same problem this is why I use the dryer on my towels a day washcloths.
Hi Melissa ☺ a cleaning product, maybe floor cleaner(not sure which) washed away dye from my red pants leaving white drops patch... can this be fixed???
My washer (top loader with agitator) and dryer rare from 2003. I don't want to replace them because I think they are better, wash and dry larger things like comforters, and more reliable. Your thoughts?
I've made a fabric softener with 1 litre of water and 200 grams of citric acid. I have a dryer but never use it because it usually sets stains I never see and it's so old and not energy efficient. Usually the citric acid softener is good enough at keeping the towels and facecloths soft after hanging up to dry but if for some reason it's still stiff, I'll toss them in the dryer on the Fluff setting (no heat) for about 20 minutes and everything becomes nice and soft. Also if the load of laundry is particularly full of lint and hair, I'll hang dry first then toss the entire load on Fluff for 20 minutes, that usually gets all the hair and lint out
I'm curious your thoughts on the crystal balls for the washer?
I’m looking for ideas about sheets and pillowcases in a front loading dryer. One sheet wraps around all the others and interferes with drying the items that are stuck inside. Is there a special way to load a front load dryer to prevent this?
Being allergic to dust mite frass (droppings) I water-wash my feather pillows occasionally and change my pillow cases frequently. To get the moisture out of the pillow or feather quilts, I bought a cheap pair or canvas shoes to 'rough-up' the feathers and dry faster. One can be used in a lighter load that holds water.
To soften towels and other clothes, I rinse and soften my laundry with half- to a cup of white vinegar. After all, it removes shampoo. residue, detangles, and makes my hair shine, so why not laundry? In my experience it works well and leaves no aroma after drying (hair or laundry).

You can also use tennis balls! Let them air out to get rid of that smell but they work amazingly!

You have to occasionally wash the lint filter under warm water. Fabric softeners can plug up the filter. Some will hold water when plugged. If in closet make sure doors are left open, dryer needs air.
I'll thru items that are almost dry in the dryer for 5 - 10 minutes on very low heat when I want to fluff them up and get rid of lint.
In answer to your question on fluffing up wash cloths and such. I'm not an expert, but I think the key is movement. Towels in a dryer are in a constant state of motion while drying, where as on a rack they simply dry in one position. I would say try using a fan while drying on a rack, the movement might give the desired result. Just watched this, and gave it a ponder lol. I hope it works. :)

The installer wanted $1,500.00 to install, so I just did it myself. Not going to lie the gas piping scared me a little, but I checked everywhere for leaks and no leaks.

Melissa I have a great tip for you when it comes to making that cloth fluffy again, first soak it in a bowl of warm water with about 4 tablespoons of White Vinegar, soak for about an hour or more, then remove and ring out gently just so it is damp then allow it to dry on your drying rack, then rewash again with a few drops of dishwashing liquid and rinse with a quarter cup of Vinegar and dry in your dry just until it is almost dry but not over dried this is how I do my microfiber cloths and oh I too am in the home cleaning business and use microfiber cloths to clean my clients homes, those cloths come out soft like they were when they were brand new, never dry these cloths on a drying rack this makes them come out stiff and wrinkly
If i hang dry something and it comes out matted or stiff, I'll throw it in the dryer on cold for a short while, that seems to help without risking shrinking garments

Melissa I really need an answer. I wa stold yesterday that you shouldn't use dryer sheets in the front load dryer. I have the ones you have. Only two years old. Should use softner in the washer. I read the manuel and didn't find anything about it in there.
Just needed your opinion. Just found out a few months ago about not using but a very small amount of dertergent in the washer after having the guys to come and look at mine after showing alot of soap in mine and sticking on a cycle. Had no idea. The amount I was advised to use will save me a bottle will probably last a year if not more. Said just to pour the bottom of the lid to cover. Thats all.

The best thing to use instead of dryer sheets for me is the DBAll with foil and scent added to a sponge also to keep sheets and blankets from tangling use the Dwadder. Go check it out on Defuturesolutions.com
As you said that film from dryer sheets and fabric softener also coat fabric. What this does is prevent absorption. This makes it a bad choice for towels (they absorb less water), sheets (they absorb less body oil and sweat at night making you feel sticky), and cotton, modal, and wool clothing (same reason as the sheets). Dryer balls are a much better option if you just want a fresh scent on your clothing and the wool ones don't beat up your clothing too much. I would stay away from the others if you're drying wool or modal because their wet strength is poor and you can easily damage those fabrics.
I used to work in a soft home goods store (sheets, towels, curtain, etc.) and then got a fashion design degree. So many things you learn about the stuff you put in your laundering.
in the old days, before dryers if diapers were hanging on the line outside and got frozen, it would make them softer after they warmed up again.

I have the same laundry-line-no-fluff problem. We just manhandle the cloth diapers and try to fluff them up. I can't wait to add essential oil to my wool dryer balls - I just got some and I'm looking for easy ways to get started. I also just cleaned up and DIY'ed some decor in my laundry room so I like being in there a little more.

Hey I just came across your videos and I love them so I subscribed but I have a question. When I wash my clothes it smells fine and you can actually smell the detergent but after drying it has a nasty moldy smell or it never dry for the full time. Help, what should

Clean washer with vinegar and hot water. Don't forget to clean the detergent drawer too.
Add a cup of white vinegar to the towels in the laundry as well.
I don't own a clothes dryer, but this video was still a lot of good information for those that do. Your laundry room is sooooo much bigger than mine. Mine is a pass through to the back door & I decided that I wanted a small chest freezer instead of a clothes dryer so I hang clothes to dry year round. It works ok for me but my brother tells me I live in the stone age because I also don't have a clothes dryer or a dishwasher.
Adding white vinegar to the rinse cycle as well as throwing your washcloth/towel in the dryer for a few minutes will help improve the fluff.
Clothes last longer by air drying them. I rather is dry than drier, I just don't have the space.
I tried the essential oil in the drying balls as you suggested and the drying balls got stained is that normal ?

If you put jeans and towels in the dryer for 10 minutes and then hang them out to line dry they will be soft and fluffy
Totally agree. I put my wet clothes in the dryer to merely heat up the fibers which in turn will remove all the tiny creases from the washing machine. Then I hang everything on hangers to dry. Especially jog bottoms, sweatshirts and jeans. They then dry as if they've been ironed. If I dry clothes totally in the dryer I find they appear too floppy. Even towels dry better after only 5 mins in dryer.
I have a dryer with a filter at the front can I place a dryer sheet in the dryer?

I find that my towels dry fluffier when I hang them to dry outside, especially on a breezy day. Unfortunately, this only works in the summer where I live.

***** Tips for fluffiness: You can't really get something like a towel or wash cloth as fluffy without putting it in the dryer, because it's the heat and tumbling that make things fluffy. However, what you can do is use a combination method (95% rack - 5% dryer). Air dry towels and wash cloths on your drying rack first until they're still just a little damp. Then throw them in the dryer for 5 minutes with a dryer ball.

***** if you are the unfortunate victim of forgetting a Kleenex in your pocket in the washing machine, no need to rewash! The dryer will take care of the wet bits of debris and deposit them into the lint trap. To dewrinkle a garment in a flash, throw it into the dryer for 10 minutes. If you have a few items that were handwashed and you want to conserve energy, skip putting them into the washing machine on spin cycle altogether and instead put them into the dryer with a dry towel to absorb the moisture for 20 or so minutes.
