Tough amp. Has the circuitry and voicing of the 6505 as well as the JSX and Triple X, along with a preamp tube and a full quad 6L6 power amp section. That thing should dominate live.

I've got a Tube 60, a VIP 3, and had a Vypyr 30 for a minute. I think the Vypyr Tube and the solid state Vypyrs are completely different animals. The tubes bring the modeling to life. The VIP does have some fun presets and some pretty warm Transtubiness, if you will, but the 30 did nothing for me at my age, despite my having heard some good buzz about it. I personally think Peavey should bring back the tube models for the latest generation of Vypyr. In general, I think real power tubes are what's needed to put almost any digital modeling over the top, although solid state and digital modeling by themselves get closer all the time.

The tube Vypyr is one of the best amps Peavey has made in the last 20 years. The 6505 channel, worth the price alone, sounds more like a 5150 than any other modeling amp to this day. And from what I've heard so far from online videos it sounds better than the EVH 5150 Iconic. You can also get vintage VH tones out of that amp quite easily, the 6505 green channel with a bit of the built in tube screamer is your friend if you're going for the Dave era VH tone. Or you can go with the 6505 red channel and roll off the the gain to about 12 o' clock and mix in some of the phaser effect, which is very good on that amp.The clean sounds are amazing on this amp as well, especially the Fender Twin channel. I still have my tube Vypyr 120 2x12 combo and still use it often despite having a EVH 5150, Marshall, Mesa Boogie, etc...If you buy one go for the 2x12 combo, it has plenty of low end and pushes air, heavy amp but I don't move it around, it stays in my studio. I retubed mine with a set of Ruby tubes a while back and it still kicks ass. I got a used Sanpera II pedal in mint condition for $100 several years ago for it and it's great. I also own a Vypyr Pro 100 1x12 combo, which is the second best Vypyr in the series. That's all solid state and and has a harsher attack, and has more bells and whistles, and less bottom. That's a good amp as well.

Are the vypyr Pro and the vypyr tube version similar when modeling amps? Ignoring 1 vs 2 speakers. Or the tubes really make a huge difference. Thanks in advance!

Great description. The tube Vypyrs are, imo, the best modeling amps of all time. And are just phenomenal amps, even without consideration of the word "modeling." Great amps, period.

The vypyrs are sooo slept on way better than katana for metal by a county mile not bad at all for clean too, the buddah amp model has a real good clean . if they had better marketing and visual designs and couple cheap extra features (external cab out for one) you would see them as much as the katana

The older Peavey Vypyr is one of the best practice amps ever. You can gig with em too. I've got a Boogie Roadster and a Mark IV but I STILL turn my Vypyr 30 on with the sanpera from time to time! Haha.. Great amps... And the tube version is twice as great! With patience, you can dial in whatever you want to on this thing. The plexi channel is slept on for nice bluesy breakup tones too.🤘

I had one of the Tube 60 Vypyrs and I loved it. Coupled with the Sanpera II pedals it was crazy versatile. Unfortunately it wasn't reliable to gig with. It left me out to dry on a couple of gigs. It went back to Peavey several times and they couldn't get it stop locking up. The problem seemed to associated with the pedal. I could practice and record all day long but didn't trust it at a gig. I've gone through a 5150III that just didn't sound as good in my opinion. I'm currently using a Helix floor with power cab and it still doesn't sound quite as good but its been really reliable and even more versatile....... I wish I had my tube 60 back..

Killer Tone & Sound! Picked one of these up last week and blown away and that's coming from an Early B revision Mesa Mark iv and a JVM 210 and a 5150 III and that's only what I have now and not what I've gone through in 40 years as far as Bogner Ecstacys and Splawn Quickrods, 5150's ect. but this thing gives You that squishy compressed 80's Lynch / Dimartini sound probably due to the hybrid technology but I'm fine with that even being a total tube snob.....I did change out the 6L6's to Mesa str-420's and a vintage Jan Phillips 12ax7a in the P.I Slot (No bias adj. needed)).......Woke this Beast up BIG TIME, although I want to try kt66's down the road!
It's super loud, tight and still maintains its tone at high volume and does not fart out til ear bleeding volumes and the effects are top notch and they actually sound better than some of my vintage Boss Japanese pedals.
It also crushes with another cab plugged into the speaker out and the amp itself still puts out sound unlike other amps that cut it off when another cab gets plugged in (Sweet!).......Super crushing stereo type sound with tons of compliments live. Another huge factor is that there is NO LATENCY when using a MIDI PEDAL when changing channels (Yeah, Baby!!!)....Get ya' Pull with this one.

  • @Nestorglass

I had mine since I was 15 (2010), the solid-state 100w combo version of it. Thing slaps so fucking hard I just put my 50w tube head for sale and I'm now in the process of separating the vypyr's speakers from the amp and making it a head version. I always knew it did, I just didn't think it would've held up against a normal stack. I took it to band practice the other day and it sounded amazing at full volume and held up in the mix with the other guitarist using a Kemper and an Orange 2x12. The thing even sounds way better with band-context volume too (instead of the usual home/recording levels). At that point I just got convinced, this amp had probably the best modeling of that generation, the 6505 model specially wins for me.

Mr. Fowler, I have seen many, many amp and guitar demos and at 2:25 you did something no one has ever accomplished: Your use of the selector switch on the guitar made a very noticeable difference, as if you picked up a different guitar. Others may claim that the selector makes a mind-blowing, unicorns and rainbows shift in tone, but this is the first time I've truly heard it where I want to know how, why, and what pickups. It wasn't subtle at all, it was like getting off the calm bus at Basic Training and meeting Drill Sergeant for the first time.

Bought both the Vypyr 60- and 120Tube and they're pretty awesome. With the built in stomp boxes they're ready to go and sound furious. The 6505 channel is the most accurate when picking hard and can be even played without a booster or (internal/external) pedal in front and still rip & tear.
What I like the most is that these amps feel responsive and sharp when alternate picking. It's pretty worrying how muddy many amps sound. I bought a TSL100 and it sounds like total ass - I can't crank it though so I might miss out on the goods.
Pretty crisp amps were the old Crate line from the 90ies. I remember playing the 30 Watt version and most people were truly awe'd by the "crystal like" sharpness of the amp. Very aggressive and piercing tone.
The only downside being that there was near zero bass(guess this was their trade-off for the amp's pristine cut). Does anybody know how one gets a really hard and dry sound of a Marshall?
My go to reference for "hardness" is Slayer's 1988 Felt Forum concert here on youtube - the guitars sound amazingly badass

I was playing vypyrs in my teens, getting close to 15 years ago. Glad to see them getting some love, I thought I was onto something with them but ultimately their lack of durability is what led me away from them, I blew 3 and every one of them Peavey told me it would be cheaper to just buy a new one instead of fixing it. They are tube preamp and tube power amp. 12AX7 in the pre, and 6L6GC in the power section. Plus it also mixes some Transtube analog stuff in as well as some digital efx. All in All, a great amp. And they did well, compared to what they are doing now. Too bad it's probably the last Great thing they will ever do. The Vypyr Pro is pretty good, with lots of bells and whistles with a monster footboard(that is not included and costs half the amp). It's just cheaply built with plastic and fiberboard. No high quality components. Not like my old Peavey tanks from back in the day that weigh a ton. These are light and easy to move around, but the corner protectors are plastic(stupid) and break easy, plus they are shaped really weird and I have yet to find any kind of metal replacement for the odd shaped front ones which are the first to break. Why would you want to protect flimsy fiberboard with flimsy plastic? Are they even paying attention to what the players are saying or wanting? And now with the tube market like it is...new tube amp designs are probably not going to be a thing.

Being that this is tube, can you get good apartment levels out of this while still having the gain cranked? Basically, does this act more like a tube where you have to have the volume cranked too, or does it act more like a solid state?

    • @LucasFowler
      @LucasFowler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Great question. Basically, the Tube Vypyr has the same preamp as the solid state version, and those sounds have the tube power amp modeled into them already. At low volumes, the tube and solid state versions sound pretty similar. The main difference with the tube version (to my ears) is the increased dynamic range and perceived volume. The amp feels less compressed and "digital" to play at high volumes, and it also gets VERY loud.

It has similar frequency balance & style of the intended amp 'models' but like almost all 'modelers' the end result is 'hashy' & 'harsh' & 'jagged' & oddly lacking in detail in a hollow distant sort of way & overal lifeless, flat, boring & compressed feel. It's 'impressive 4 the price' but overal sounds worse than a tiny cheap MG10G practice amp, because it's analog & basically a 'good analog pedal' into a little speaker instead of half-baked digital 'attempts'. I've heard many good 'clean' models, but for distortion they almost always sound weird like this.
