These vypyrs are one of the few modeling amps i would swap the speakers on. Line 6 usually dont do well with swapping the speaker in the combos because they are voiced for modeling but Peavey use their standard voiced speakers with this line of amps so the swap sounds great.
Because the vypyr is using a real guitar speaker like the boss katana? The other modeling amps use full range speaker with cab sims. well the spider got an upgrade where u can turn off the tweeter and make it sound like a guitar speaker.
The tube power section on the Vypyr Tube models smooths out some of that harshness already. I think the cabinet of the Tube 60 combo may be a bit bigger as well even though it's also a 112. The 120W Vypyr Tube combo was a 212 and I'd imagine that'd have some more bottom end too. The tube models do not work with the peavey vypyr edit software though that the newer vypyrs had if you really want that feature.
Actually worked really well in that combo. I’m surprised since Greenbacks don’t normally like open-back 1x12 kind of applications. They get woofy. I do hear some of that in the lower mids (should be easy to dial out), but overall it’s a really nice improvement and gets rid of the nasty hair and fizz.
@@notsure1135 EQ is not necessary when you have a good amp. I feel EQs in the FX loop sound unnatural and always take away the amps charakter. When you're not happy with the sound of your amp, get another.
@@luca4352 if you know how and when to use a graphic EQ, it might be the best investment you ever made for tone, especially when playing in drastically different venues or styles with the same amp. Man I've been waiting for this video since you did the original review. I actually just bought the Vypyr VIP 3 with the Sanpera II foot controller 3 months ago. It does sound better. I recently pulled the stock speaker out of my 6505+ 112 combo and put in a Peavey Scorpion speaker. Took away all the shrill high frequencies and got me more punch and clarity! The Peavey Scorpion speakers rule and I bought two of them for $40 on craigslist.
@@TheSpineSplitter1990 speakers generally get smoother and mellow out when broken in. I think you need a certain amount of the high end fizz to cut through a mix
Greenbacks can be kinda dull, he should have take a speaker that is more appropriate for metal (V30 or alike,T75, or Jensen stealth series). I think the original was shit too, it has way too much low and no punch.
I had an original vypyr 15 and an original vypyr 30. I connected the 30 to the speaker of a red stripe bandit to make a ghetto 2x12 separate cab vertical stack. I also ran both the 15 and 30 on different occasions into a Peavey MS 4x12. I always turned off the cab sims while doing this with both amps and cabs. To me I always thought it sounded pretty decent for what it was and probably would have been even better with different speakers than the sheffields in the bandit and the 4x12. I always liked running an overdrive in front of the vypyrs(bandit too) which again to me improved the tone. Being a broke joke bedroom player I used cheap clones of ts9 ts808 and a boss sd1 but was still able to get metal tones as heavy as your moms cast iron frying pan. And before anyone wants to clown about running an OD in front of a solid state amp try playing with one in front of the vypyrs or the bandit as well because not only does it work but sounds good too and much better than the TSC setting on the vypyr 30. I would love to hear Ola run his vypyr through a Mesa 4×12 and maybe a couple of different ODs up front
thanks for the analysis i think your spot on about the speaker they chose being able to handle the variety of sound as well as the ability to switch from acoustic to bass to guitar....so they used it to acomodate but man if your only going for that metal sound or a specific sound change that speaker.
I have an older Peavey Vypyr 30 and I swapped the stock speaker (Blue Marvel) with a Eminence Governor. It rounded out the tone a little and gave it more "oomph", a worthy upgrade. The old speaker tone would get lost playing live, whereas a better speaker helped the tone come through much better. The Vypyr 30 isn't an overly loud amp so it didn't help volume-wise. I also tested the same combo with a 2x12 Zilla cab which was a huge improvement. The speaker change was one thing, but a hefty cab made all the difference. I may be tempted to get the Vypyr converted into a head sometime, as changing the cabinet was by far the biggest improvement.
I own this Amp and have to admit that I'm biased. I use it for both guitar and bass and I'm in love with the amp as it comes from Peavey. I will say that I've been eyeballing purchasing the Solar e1.7 cannibalismo guitar and hearing the e1.6 through it has confirmed that it will absolutely be my next guitar purchase.
The celestion is meant to sound good very loud on tube amps isn’t it? I would think the vyper being a modeling amp, it’s probably got a speaker matched for modeling (like frfr or similar). I wouldn’t think a traditional celestion would be an upgrade.
As for the "IR infront of the speaker" that might actually also be true. I remember the original vypyr series got a software update where you could set 4 different sounding modes. Also an Idea instead of switching speaker: add a jack socket. I still plan to do that for mine...
I kind of liked the old speaker more and it is because the loss of high end as you mentioned. Maybe it just comes off like that on my setup here or something but the new speaker sounds like it's in a box or something. It's not as clear and articulate imo, I hear some goodness too but I guess in the room it's way more obvious.
Hi Ola , i prefer the sound with the original speaker ,because the sound seems bassy with the celestion speaker , the original speaker is more adapted for my ears . but not bad with the celestion speaker .
I have a 1st gen vypyr still laying around. I am glad to see they took the stupid plastic fangs off of the newer ones. I had to remove that mess myself.
I really liked the sound with the upgraded speaker now I’m going the go buy a peavy vypyr and upothe speaker your the best oh yah love your dog congratulations he’s beautiful love everything your doing with your you tube show metal onnnn 🤘
I have a Vypyr X-2. It's basically the cost of the speaker to just buy the next step up. The hybrid speaker is bigger and allows you to play bass as well as adding more bass to the range of the speaker.
Ola, nice test a nice idea. I have 2 notes for you. 1. Blackstar ID: core amps. Same format as the Boss amps you like. Inexpensive amps. People don’t like Blackstar amps. I don’t understand why. The ID: core and however are pretty insane for the price. Check it out. And 2. Who doesn’t enjoy modding gear? Try the Jensen MOD speaker. It has less body, but big highs and really tight. Could be a fun swap.
Ola i have the original vypyr 30 and 75w combo amps and i solved the high frequency harshness with a beam blocker i made out of a CD i glued to wooden strips and put it inside of the speaker cutout,i also glued black felt on both sides of the CD and painted the wooden strips flat black. These amps sound much better now and i did not have to change the original speaker!
I put a Celestion 30 in a Katana MkII 50w combo. I would be lying if I said that it didn't improve things. I'd say, if you can get a used speaker in good condition, go for it. It gave my Katana more air and clarity and just and overall nicer resolution with a crunchier bite well suited for Metal.
A friend of mine has the small Peavy Vypyr (w/out the lcd screen) and we both agree that the bass response was just too much. he likes to play rock riffs and choruses, where I like to drop D + palm mute everything, yet I couldn't help but chuckle when a stock Washburn Stratocaster was making the walls reverberate. Good video for the versatile amp! Now I can tell him to save up for a Celestion speaker. or an eminence dv-77 >:D
Just remembered you couldn't turn off or change cab sims on the vypyrs but on the originals(15,30,75,100, tube60 and tube120) you could change the speaker "voicing" by holding down one of the four preset buttons while turning the amp on. It has been a while since i had them as they were sold to help pay for their replacements which were the red stripe bandit that i mentioned earlier and a Supreme XL head. I really liked all 4 of those peavey solid state amps and if the price was right would buy all again. Liked the bandit and supreme xl so much I would play a piranha thru the bandit/Supremes power amp until i got rid of the piranha while keeping the other 2. Sadly I ended selling them both to fund an Ultra 410 which I ran combined with the ms412 for a 4×10/4×12 "full stack" which is still my favorite rig that ive owned \m/ with a joyo vintage OD up front and fish and chips EQ in the loop it was metal AF
Word up Ola!! This vid shows once again just how much the speakers have on your guitar sound. If i was to record with mic's on the amp, I think it would be worth the speaker swap. Rock on all!

On video the original sounded better, however after listening again I bet the new speaker sounds better in person.
that's my suspicion as well. i bet the celestion is much better live, but the original might record better for really aggressive modern tones.
"Ola changing shit!" 🎸🎶👀
The greenbacks are the smoothest, creamiest sounding speakers IMO I love them
I preferred the original speaker, you can record it and apply some EQ in post to adjust it to your taste
Seen guys play JCM900's through MG 4x12 cabs and wonder why it sounds shit. Number one most bang for buck tone change/upgrade is the speaker.
That, and a Graphic EQ in the effects loop.
@@notsure1135 EQ is not necessary when you have a good amp. I feel EQs in the FX loop sound unnatural and always take away the amps charakter. When you're not happy with the sound of your amp, get another.
@@luca4352 i have had amazing amps made better with an EQ in the loop.
@@luca4352 if you know how and when to use a graphic EQ, it might be the best investment you ever made for tone, especially when playing in drastically different venues or styles with the same amp. Most amps just do not have the same flexibility as a graphic EQ, so if used moderately, it can't hurt.
@@Proghead88 I like keeping it simple, if I need to fix something I do it while mixing. But great if it works for you man ✌
The new speaker sounds so much fuller, really good bass response with palm mutes, the obvious winner for me.
Man I've been waiting for this video since you did the original review. I actually just bought the Vypyr VIP 3 with the Sanpera II foot controller 3 months ago. I love doing upgrades and mods and before the amp even came in I was wondering about changing the speaker. This though... Really helped make up my mind. Thanks Ola you're the man!!!
Ola's goes from chugga chug, to Darkthrone and back to chugga again. Thats metal.
Sounds like a blanket is over it with the new speaker, I guess we've learnt to not bother upgrading our peavey vypr speakers
New speakers need time to be broken in. I rather have that blanket sound than a fizzy harsh high end speaker.
I mean it’s obviously darker, but when he tweaked its sounded way more dense and punchy to me, more like something you’d hear on a metal album.
@@TheSpineSplitter1990 speakers generally get smoother and mellow out when broken in. I think you need a certain amount of the high end fizz to cut through a mix
@@matt926uk1 I don't think anyone is gonna use a Vypyr on an album to 'cut through the mix'
Greenbacks can be kinda dull, he should have take a speaker that is more appropriate for metal (V30 or alike,T75, or Jensen stealth series). I think the original was shit too, it has way too much low and no punch.
His face every time that he adjusts the amp and gets a slightly better tone is priceless hahaha
I also have the original Vypyr 15 and 30w but i never heard of a way to turn off the amp sims on these amps, how did you do it with your Vypyr amps?
The new, more expensive speaker requires more power/volume to really push it. But I like the more rounded tone and darkness that it has.
The old usa sheffields sound pretty good in these
Laughed way too hard at the "struggling to find the hole" comment.
thanks for the analysis i think your spot on about the speaker they chose being able to handle the variety of sound as well as the ability to switch from acoustic to bass to guitar....so they used it to acomodate but man if your only going for that metal sound or a specific sound change that speaker.
I switched the speaker in my Katana 50 mk2 to a vintage 30, and it made it sound great. I highly recomend.
Thanks for making this! I was really looking forward to the vid. Really looking forward to that next vid!
The celestion is meant to sound good very loud on tube amps isn’t it? I would think the vyper being a modeling amp, it’s probably got a speaker matched for modeling (like frfr or similar). I wouldn’t think a traditional celestion would be an upgrade.
Definitely an improvement. The new speaker sounds much tighter with much less of that top end staticy fuzz.
To upgrade, I'd choose a V30 or even a T-75 maybe. Much different speakers. Maybe an Eminence Wizard or Governor
Nice highs and midds on the first speaker. Lifeless blanket over speaker sound after the upgrade
You know what would be awesome? If Solar guitars made a Dimebag shaped guitar, that would be badass!🤘
Thanks for following through!!!
I have the Valve king, but never had payed attention to this amp before, It sounds amazing
The original speaker sounds very much better, more heavy, more scratchy, more old school, thanks a lot for the demostration.
I had to remove that mess myself.
wait I have an older vypyr too (100w), what fangs?
i love the woofyness of the celestion but love the presence of the og speaker
I really liked the sound with the upgraded speaker now I’m going the go buy a peavy vypyr and upothe speaker your the best oh yah love your dog congratulations he’s beautiful love everything your doing with your you tube show metal onnnn 🤘
Love this "Upgrade" video idea, good job Ola!
That’s crazy! I’m in the process of doing this myself, except on the VIP1 with an 8 inch speaker.
I have a Vypyr X-2. It's basically the cost of the speaker to just buy the next step up. The hybrid speaker is bigger and allows you to play bass as well as adding more bass to the range of the speaker.
sounds good . . I like my Peavey Vypyr 15 . . . I just got a Fender FM 212 for $ 85. the best deal of the year . . .sounds very good.

Mr. Speaker: "its the speaker!" ... but please put the blanket off the "Heritage"!"
So Peavey speakers are good? YES!
This is what happens when you try to put a real guitar speaker in front of an IR cabsim, wet blanket.
@@jaklcide
good explanation ...
OMG, I dig this with the new speaker.
The Peavey Vypyr Pro 100 is hugely underrated as well. The distortion is very nice!
Very interesting test. Thank you Ola 🙂
Sounded way better after. I was thinking of changing out my speaker in a 6505+ combo. Definitely going to do that now.
Word up Ola!! This vid shows once again just how much the speakers have on your guitar sound. If i was to record with mic's on the amp, I think it would be worth the speaker swap. Rock on all!
Sounds muddy and dark to me with the Celestion. Granted, it's not broken in, so it'll open up when you get more hours on it.
2:24 Peavey Vypyr speaker
4:25 Celestion speaker
