  • We have set the normal political conversation aside for the first segment of Good Talk this week. Instead an emotional discussion about the loss of a Canadian cultural icon. His name -- Karl Tremblay, and for many Canadians they may not have heard of him, but today we'll tell you why he's someone, if you didn't know about, you should. Chantal and Bruce have their memories. Plus more potential splits in both the Liberals and the NDP, and what to expect with Pharmacare next week.

I was pleasantly surprised -- very pleasantly surprised -- that Peter Mansbridge would devote any time, let alone a good chunk of his podcast, to talk about Karl Tremblay and the Cowboys Fringants. And it's not just because they are a favourite group of mine. It's because he exposed many of his Anglophone listeners and viewers to a phenomenon in Quebec which has no real counterpart anywhere else in Canada. It's fascinating and moving to see the deep attachment of Quebecers and many Canadians outside Quebec, as well as many in France, Belgium, and Switzerland to Tremblay and his group. It's gratifying for all of us Canadians to be able to share in such an emotional moment with those of our fellow Canadians who feel such a deep sense of loss at the death of someone who for most of a quarter century was an important part of their daily lives.

I am very embarrassed to say that I do not know of Karl Tremblay. I will be remedying this gap in my Canadianess today. I am deeply moved by this episode and want to thank Chantal and Bruce for their raw vulnerability. So beautiful.

Karl Tremblay and Les Cowboys Fringants remind me of Spirit of the West in the sense many songs tackle social justice issues, they play traditional instruments and their lead singer died far too young. I saw them three times, twice in Vaudreuil-Dorion. They are such an amazing band and he was such a terrific singer.

Beautiful. As an Anglophone i never heard of Karl Tremblay. But i am gathering this is my great loss. Chantal Hebert's reaction was so moving. And it sounds indeed he was Quebec's Gord Downie. Sad. He was so young. Quebec was so lucky to have him and the band. Rest in peace, shooting star.🎉

Karl Tremblay and "Les Cowboys" are known in France. My French boyfriend told me about his death. May he rest in peace.

Thank you very much for talking about Karl Tremblay’s passing. Les Cowboys Fringuants’ music has been the soundtrack of Quebec’s of the last 25 years. They represent what is good and beautiful about this province.

I'm surprisingly happy they took the time to talk about this to an English-Canadian audience. I grew up listening to them since I was a teenager and they never left me.
Les Cowboys Fringants are an iconic folk-rock band that has been around for 25 years straight, a rare feat in the world of music. Their songs have moved Québécois because they are incredibly relatable stories and touch upon a wide range of universal feelings through the eyes of everyday people about life events. They make you wonder, sing, cry, angry, laugh, dance, think, etc. Their lyrics are poetically siimple and the cultural references in the stories are solidly anchored in Québec. They are the most impactful music artists in Québec for an entire generation, notably because that longevity creates memories.
I remember I was in Lethbridge, Alberta, with some 50 Québécois for an ESL student exchange over the Summer after my High school years. For St-Jean-Baptiste Day we all gathered at this Irish pub and asked the owner if he could do something special for this day. He said yes and asked us to bring some music. We all brought our CDs and most of them were les Cowboys Fringants. We blasted the place with their music, put up Québec flags all over, danced on the bar counter, drank from the beer tap... Sitting at the table by the door, I could see Albertans walk in and be stunned to hear a music that was clearly not familiar to them, and then walk out right away ahah! Good time :)

I knew and loved Les Cowboys Fringants as a francophone outside Québec. I'd agree that The Tragically Hip is probably the closest comparison for English Canada in terms of the feelings towards them.

The problem is you can't negotiate with a side that wants to destroy you. Politicians know that yet pander to voters whenever Islamophobia is brought up along side antisemitism. I only ever see one side being targeted....at least from an outsider looking in

This podcast from week to week (specifically Bruce and Peter) should be funded by the Liberal Party of Canada. It's the Canadian version of MSNBC. I'd rather listen to a podcast that has representatives from different perspectives (like Herle's "Curse of Politics"). Bruce can't even pretend not to be an unabashed Liberal member/voter. Add someone with a different perspective if you want to be taken seriously as an independent politcal podcast and not simply as an organ for Liberal propoganda. That being said, you are likely preceived exactly as you want to be perceived.

I agree there is more perspectives and disagreements on the Curse of Politics. That said i will continue to listen to this podcast to get the Liberal take on many issues.

The abhorrent verbal attacks on Trudeau were disgusting BUT he has the lions share of blame for the permissive lawlessness that has emboldened Muslim immigrants in Canada. If muslims were truly interested in quelling Islamophobia, they might trying to assimilate and adopt our Canadian culture and lifestyle. Not long ago deporting foreign disrupters was applauded.

I'm against the proposition of pushing more pharmaceutical solutions to all our ills. How about expanding our current health system to include non-pharma optons such as acupuncture, massage, osteopathy, and myriad other body therapies. Less expensive and more effective than loading patients up with an endless supply of prescription drugs.
