This is 100% You can tell because Mariah knows how to control her mic. If you saw when she goes in lower register she almost eats the mic, and when she goes in the higher register the mic is far. If you go to her lip performances she never controls her mic and shes just making weird faces and sometimes not making an effort😅😂
During this era she had a tendency to cover her face with her arm during the lipsynced belting parts 😅 Pretty silly and obvious. Not to mention Stevie Wonder is her #1 inspiration, and I don't think she would have done him the disservice of lipsyncing.
Let’s not forget the most essential point here. She can go from the lowest to the highest note in just 3 seconds. Adjusting your cords, mouth position and breathing to this change is something only Mariah could do in such a short time. She is singing almost the entire song in a very low range so going up there at the end is just unbelievable

Her vocal ability is undeniably unique, but there is ALWAYS this constant doubt whether she is singing live or not, and that really bothers me, it is so unfair to her, because she has been through so much, since her intense childhood, her stage fright in the early days of her career, she being a perfeccionist, her vocal nodules. Her voice is so fascinating that people do not give her a time, and are always ready to discredit her! She is a one of a kind not only singer but songwriting, and I doubt we will ever find an artist like her! She is a LEGEND, period 👑

This issue is that the dubbing and her previous lip sync scandals make people question whether we’re hearing exactly what the audience is hearing. In the end though we know she can sing live and it’s actually pretty easy to tell what parts she lips or not (when she chooses to) because she’s honestly not very good at it 😂

one of my favorite performance, brings tears to my eyes everytime, i love the ending, omgosh, i feel like i was riding on those runs at the end. and thats live, its not vocally taxing so it makes sense to perform it live.
She sang 'always' forward like that to be able to reach the deep note more easily. I do that also, involuntarily, when l'm trying to sing low. If she would have widened her mouth, the sound would come out more brighter and she would have a hard time hitting the low note. I love how she transitions between her breathy low notes into a fuller more round sound in the space of a syllable and finish in a fantastic run. She would never lip synch un a tribute for one of her idols. Besides Charmbracelet era her voice was very consistent and had a velvety tone.
This was sung live at the event but they dubbed this video with slightly better vocals. If you look up this performance undubbed you can find it on TH-cam. It’s still very good undubbed. Just look up ‘You and I- Mariah Carey undubbed’ and you can find it.

Her lower register is so deep. Wow she can go mega high and mega lows. A lot of males would struggle with those notes
