Mariah is to music, what Serena is to tennis. Hear me out. They both started with nothing, became world famous in their teens. Both hold records and achievements others can only dream of. For them the standards are set way higher then the rest. They are expected to be the best in everything they do. When they fall, the world takes a gasp and the haters are ready like hungry Hyenas. I love them both so much. Thank you for the time you put into these reactions. Thank you so much.
I don't think they are comparable - I feel like what Mariah did and her raw vocal talent supercedes a Serena/Venus comparison to me... There is a comparison - but thats not it.
Agreed at 3:26! People tend to think of only high notes and whistles when speaking of Mariah when in fact she has one of the best and most luscious lows in the industry
The song at the beginning is called Angels (The Prelude) from her 2010 album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. Her speaking voice is quite deep too. That's why she does not consider herself a soprano. The only performance you're missing a d dying too see what you say is her 2006 Grammy performance of We Belong together and Fly like a bird. You will see mistakes there but then she soars
Actually, the intro song is called Angel (The prelude), this intro shows her ability to whistle making riffs, runs y so many vocals. You should react it.
So to your point about the EQ sound engineering, Mariah is famous for noting how temperamental her voice is. Mariah has stated before that live singing is unpredictable because of the various oil-based smokes used to pick up lighting - when she sings, the smoke interferes with her vocal chords. She has talked extensively about the kinds of microphones used for recording that pick up the breathy, husky textures of her voice better than others. And during her Rainbow era, she was on record saying how some recording mics do a better job picking up the harmonics of her voice - its very subtle in her chest register. But when she goes into her whistle register there are times when you can pick apart 2 or 3 notes. Lalah Hathaway does a really good job of demonstrating it because she has developed that technique. But for Mariah, its a coincidence to the sound she makes in a specific register.
I think folks don't understand how the artists who did recordings in the 90s have a far deeper understanding of microphones. Quality sound going in was so important when any post production involved the cutting of literal tape. I'm not surprised to hear, on more than one occasion, to learn how diverse Mariah's knowledge of audio recording is.
@@LesageSinging I wholeheartedly agree with your comment. Many singers from pre-millenium have a better understanding of the singing that is recorded versus the singing that is live. Also technology like pro-tools wasn't a thing - so every take was recorded and used without having to adjust pitch and volume to some extent. Elton John talked about this when recording Captain Fantastic (or it might have been Queen - Freddie Mercury - I can't remember) But I value the depth of your video analyses. Keep up the good work. Would love to see a video of you doing an MTV Unplugged performance from Mariah. Either Can't Let Go or Emotions. Both are stellar. Kelly Price (her former back up singer in the 90s and now a solo singer/R&B star stated the Can't Let Go version was a literal on the spot addition to the taping of MTV unplugged).
This is one of my favorite Mariah performances, she gives you a little bit of everything. Great reaction. You pointed out so many things I never realized but appreciate in this performance.
Subscribed because you really delve into how amazing Mariah is. I love watching videos of people merely enjoying her art but someone as knowledgeable as you, your analysis actually matters. Thank you! Hope you get to hear fly like a bird one day. Anytime you need a friend, forever, and her duet with John legend of born again.

“Just because you can do certain things to do some effects doesn’t mean your voice sound pretty” exactly! People will say this girl has better range this girl has better dah dah dah dah. I’m like… okay.. but I love Mariah’s tone and her entire voice that she creates. 👏
This is by far my favourite Mariah vocal performance. We all love the highs, but the lows in this are outstanding. Wish she would do an album for of music like this.
Thank you for all your articulate and praise-worthy observation on the details of Mariah's unique, God-given vocal prowess. She totally is not getting enough credits for her low register. Please do more reaction videos of her performances. :)
I’ve never heard someone talk about how different EQs can be used by singers depending on the song and timbre of the voice. Mariah has always been incredibly perfectionist, so this really isn’t that surprising when you think about it that way. I’m like 3 years late lol but this is very insightful!
Why i just found you now! Your analysis is just superb. So often I watch vocal coaches didnt take notice of little tricks and details Mariah did during her performances, but you did. People dont understand how Mariah is soo good and professional and everything she does is for a reason. And I love how you noticed every aspect of Mariah vocals just like Reacao Immediata vocal coach. Good job! Mariah is a vocal goddess, the best.
As the holidays come, I Highly recommend one of Mariah’s live performances of Joy To The World. Preferably BET 2001, Disney Christmas Parade 2004, or 1994 version.

@@tripfoumi883 I've studied Mariah for many years as well and it looks live but she doesn't even have a mic in that video. Yes it's different because she re-recorded it. It would have looked more realistic if she had a mic. She doesn't even have one of those mics like the ones Britney uses. One of my FAVORITE live vocal performance of hers EVER, besides, "If It's Over" (which you reacted and did a vocal analysis to), and "Fly Like a Bird" at the Grammy's. The low notes are to die for. We don't talk about LOW NOTES enough, especially with women.
Just subscribed. Your analysis is so detailed. More Mariah please! "The one" live is a good one too. She legit mimics the synth - just saw you did a month ago before I followed

New fan of the channel! Big Mariah fan! The fact that you broke down her technical aspects (mic technique, EQ’ing, etc.) I’m a FAN! But she is OBSESSED with Stevie Wonder. When it comes to breath control, I’d be curious to see you respond to Stevie Wonder singing “I Never Dreamed You’d Leave In Summer” or Mariah’s song “Lead The Way” - she holds a note and does one of the most iconic runs.
She's probably used to using mics that emphasize her breathiness. She's said in interviews before that she used mics that would enhance her airy qualities in the studio and had to also learn how to make her non-breathy singing sound good with it too.
Your videos are just so good man. Totally specific and informative and fascinating. I’ve always said about Mariah that you can talk all you want about the range and the technique and the power and the whistles, all of that is phenomenal but what really makes her stand out and unique is the tone. Even as it’s changed and developed over the years, there’s still nobody that comes close to her tone for me. That buttery, honeyed whispery tone is just other worldly.
The intro music with the whistle is actually from her song Bliss from the Rainbow album. Check it out. It was all head voice, whistle and maybe falsetto?
Mariah’s vocal technique needs to be studied, she’s the greatest female technician I’ve ever heard 🐐

The fact that she sang it live in original key, the same as male (Stevie's) voice level..
This performance shows her range, she can go very low then super high. And mind you, this is the original key when Stevie recorded it. Bravo! 👏🏼
