Buble’s version is way more easier and simpler than Mariah’s version. Mariah did a tribute of Stevie Wonder & Stevie did the EXACT same version as her with all the riffs & runs. You definitely should listen to Wonder’s version, since It was a tribute to him.
Mariah Carey has vocal nodules since she was 7, and that causes an airy texture to her voice, and sometimes when her vocals are really tired when she belts, sometimes there is an airy squeaky sound that comes out of her as well. It's not something she can control or tighten up, that's just the very nature of her voice. Most of her life she has been trained to sing with and around her nodules. I think that's what Ovela meant, that Mariah can blend into any given atmosphere. It's because Mariah in excellent vocal condition can be powerful and piercing, but when her vocals are tired (or recovering such as this performance) she has free manipulation of her voice to sing other styles of singing such as singing in the alto range.

I think it is fitting that she did runs through the whole song - Stevie Wonder is known to be an amazing "runner" and I bet she's doing it just for him. She's also intentionally using softer-airy tones as a style choice. She is able to do low notes that sound a little more full.

This is a literal example of “there is a time and place for everything” yes Stevie riffs and runs more than a lot of musicians but this song in particular is one in which he barely does any riffs/runs in the original version. He sings CLEAN with only a couple of riffs here and there for the verses and then the big runs come out in the final chorus of the song. Mariah literally riffed and ran the song off a damn cliff. I’m talking EVERY LINE. That’s not a tribute that’s a massacre

Bitchyou BettaWork while I’ll admit I went a little overboard with my comments I have to say Mariah didn’t do it better Han Stevie, not even close....her performance felt more like a talent show cop out than a genuine tribute to Stevie. Riffing and running all over the damn place with every line of the song. I’m sorry but if that’s somehow better than the original then the original must have sucked and I can tell you now, the original didn’t suck at all, it was and is far better than this sub-par interpretation.
A big reason why I even replied to half of these comments is because loads of them seemed to think she was singing the song just like the original, and though petty I’ll admit it grinds my gears because that tells me that these people haven’t heard how laid back the original is particularly vocally compared to this riffing/running monstrosity

I’ve gone through the comment section of this video and it’s hilarious how confused people are. First of all, Angel is right Mariah did Waaaaayyyyyy too many riffs and runs, literally in every single line of the song. Whether she was paying homage to Stevie or not, that was just too much. Angel was so right imo. And the people that disagree with her are only doing so because they dislike the fact that she’s right in what she says
Secondly, it’s clear that so many people are mixing thins up. Just because Stevie sings in a melismatic style with loads of riffs and runs doesn’t mean that’s all he does. Case and point THIS VERY SONG. I guarantee many of the people commenting haven’t even heard the original version because Stevie actually sims it CLEAN with barely any riffs and runs until the last chorus. And Mariah even manages to butcher the final chorus with even more runs than Stevie! Damn that was painful to listen to, worst of all she ran through the LAST NOTE which is literally the most important note in the song because Stevie holds it with NO RUNS.
I hate when people have the audacity to say “that’s how Stevie would sing it” when that’s not how he sang it AT ALL. Go and listen to the original and then come back with the same naivety 😔 it’s almost like a backwards insult because you know she did infact overdo it with the riffs and runs so if you say “well that’s how he would have sang it” you can lessen the impact of the criticism. What you don’t realise is that you are indirectly insulting Stevie out of pride. So sad, so very sad 😔
The two voices thing is called vocal range. Mariah starts many songs singing softly and then shows more vocal capabilities in the end.
