I've noticed Ari has trouble with movies that blur the lines between genres and tones. He doesn't like that and thinks it's a flaw, while some of us think it's a strength, not a weakness.
@Melancthon7332 I’d love to know which other film you are referring to! I don’t mind genre blending at all. My main issue with it was the structure of that blending here. The comedy leans a bit into offbeat territory and I actually like that. It’s the inconsistency of the tone that throws me off. One second we are laughing and the next the film attempts to say something about war and violence. It’s not really blending genres. More like throwing a couple of moments here and there to establish something deeper when it really isn’t that deep. I feel like people are focusing on some of the issues I had with the film more than they are focusing on all the things I thought were brilliant.
I never really know how to classify this one especially for someone whos never seen it because 'scifi-comedy' doesnt totally cover it ...This might sound weird, but this movie just feels super French you know? Like the idiosyncrasies and quirky-ness are so French cinema, despite its American production Luc Bessons personality is running through this.
When they're reconstructing Leeloo from her hand, the hand is still grabbing onto a handle. When Zorg receives the briefcase with the stones, the briefcase is missing one handle. Details!!!
And another detail, the garbage mountain at the spaceport is thanks to Zorg firing 1 million people from the public service sector, which included trash collection. It also included Korben's taxi job.
Another interesting thing, evil is stopped and becomes a second moon possibly signifying the actual moon was from another time evil came and almost succeeded.

@@rng81 Yeah, his voice is intentionally irritating in a self-indulgent way that seems like a socially irredeemable attitude problem to me, as a performance. It ruined Chris Tucker as an actor for me, and I'm glad he gets so few parts now.
I agree. As we can see, many don't. I wonder how much of that is because of the high pitched screaming which is associated with women and children or with the flamboyant costumes which are associated with women and children.
When Zorg's assistant comes to him in the beginning talking about firing 5 hundred K cab drivers and Zorg tells him to fire 1 million. Then later Korbin a, cab driver, gets his letter of termination. So many subtle details in this film. What a masterpiece, one of my all time favorites!
Also the Hero and Villain i.e. Korbin and Zorg never met... They came close, while running from the bomb to the elevator scene... Zorg got off the one next to the one they got in...but never met.
Some films are masterpieces but you can never watch them again due to the negative feelings they evoke. This film is endlessly rewatchable, which puts it near the top of the list for me. Entertainment should entertain and this movie definitely does that.
41:50: Leeloo is passing out because she’s still suffering from being shot by Zorg, repeatedly. Remember, Zorg’s guns just have to hit once and every other shot goes to the same target spot, that’s what happened to Leeloo in the vent. Now pair her wounds(which are acceleratingly healing because of her perfect body system) with her disillusionment of Humanity(based on the violence of war, and its slaughter of life), Leeloo is quite literally giving in to the draining presence of death, which is implied to be, emanating stronger and stronger from the Evil Planet, racing to destroy Earth and the Elements.
The Diva Plavalaguna performance is, to mee, one of the greatest pieces of movie music... It's just SO cool! And there are singers out there who can actually perform it without autotune, which is pretty damn crazy. This movie is just so 90's, loved it growing up but haven't watched it in forever. But it's definitely up there in my favourites list.
glad you added 'anymore' because certainly when this movie first came out he was still VERY famous with the 90210 crowd and public in general (being on TV so much) but yep he's sorely missed, RIP Oh and when people shout ''Bilbo!' I counter that with 'Ash!' ;)

Omg!!! My FAVORITE Gary Oldman performance! Such an unhinged but hysterical villain. I saw this movie at 7 years old as I was becoming interested in sci-fi and space in general. Zorg is a fantastic villain!
I loved his character in this, even though Gary Oldman said he disliked how he played it. When he shows off the flame thrower, turns to the camera and says "My favorite", sounding like Forrest Gump having picked the best chocolate from the box, come on, that's comic genius. This might be my favorite role he ever played, definitely one of my favorite villains of all time. Mr. Oldman, even when you "mess up", you do something awesome.
All these years later and there has still never been anything like this film, a perfect combination of inventiveness, brilliant editing, and an aesthetic unique to itself.
The guy who did the score for the movie didn't have much opera experience, so he wrote a vocal part that he thought would be impossible to sing, making it sound less human and more alien. Well, turns out the vocalist COULD sing the part and it is just a joy to hear.
Eric Serra the composer (he composed most if not all Luc Besson’s movies scores) is an incredible bass player. The first part is from a classic opera named Lucia di Lammermoor and the funk/dance part is Serra’s work :)
Although the singer did a great job, it's pretty obvious that her voice was artificially modified in the more extreme high and low notes. What's perhaps more impressive is singers who do it live without modification.
@@ariochiv exactly, most of the action part of the operatic song is also very fast-cutting sticcato notes sung (edited) in a 'non human' way on purpose (she's an alien singer after all) I'm sure she sung every note, but the transition between notes was edited and artificial on purpose by the composer. I've listened to the soundtrack since back in the day, and Eric Serra absolutely nailed it in fitting the music to the vastly different scenes in this! Oh and "the guy who did the score for the movie didn't have much opera experience" are you kidding, he want to a very prestigious operatic & classical school of music in France (his father back then was an experienced musician and song writer in his own right) Check out early Luc Besson movies because Eric Serra & Luc Besson often co-collaborated!!
Mostly true. While Inva Mula did sing the entire thing, some parts were edited at a faster pace after she sung them individually. To paraphrase Eric Serra, he wrote the song expecting Inva to only be able to sing 65% of it, but was impressed that she managed to do closer to 85% of it.
Luc Besson came up with the whole concept when he was 16, including Divine Language that Leeloo speaks. In fact, him and Mila held whole conversations off-camera in Divine.
He’s an absolute juggernaut when it comes to acting. He understands how to dissect a script and find as many beats as he can to deliver a magnetic performance 👌
It's a very French Scifi movie. If you have seen other French Scifi/Fantasy movies of the 1990s-2010s like _The Company of Wolves, The City of Lost Children, Valerian & Veronique_ (based on a longer graphic novel series), they're all very eccentric, almost dream-like. There's also _Immortel_ which is sadly a bit to bonkers to be enjoyable. The pacing is typically french too... alot of American reviewers I've seen seem baffled by it because they're so used to the American movie three act structure.
This movie holds a very special place in my heart as it was a beautiful and innocent time going to the theater on a Friday night when it was released and a lot of my friends and I had no idea what an awesome couple of hours was in store for us. Long live TFE!

Regarding your evaluation at the end, I am just out of sync with you on this. I loved the timing on everything. I've always considered this to be an Action, Comedy, Social Commentary, kind of movie. I just love love love it.

There’s an 80s adult cartoon film called Heavy Metal, that’s an anthology film. I’m convinced that one of the main characters in one of the stories is what inspired the character of Corbin Dallas. It’s almost a carbon copy being based in kind of a dystopian future, with a taxi driver that looks and even acts similar.
Correct. The episode is called Harry Canyon. Which in turn was based on the graphic novel The Long Tomorrow by Moebius. Beeson was huge fan of Moebius.
Such a great movie! The "Divine Language" spoken by Leeloo is a fictional language of 400 words, invented by Besson. To practice, Jovovich and Besson held conversations and exchanged letters in the language. Besson was then married to Maïwenn Le Besco, who played the role of the Diva Plavalaguna when filming began.
The phrases "Multi-Pass!" and "Bzzz-bzzz-bzzz!" have been part of my vocabulary for a couple of decades now. Jean-Paul Gaultier was the costume designer on this superb and hugely underrated Luc Besson film.
There are movies that shows at the right time and place and can never be remade again. This was such a movie. Perfection in every single second. Visuals, audio, actors, plot, dialogs, humor. Everything was just spot on.
Luc Besson directed another Space Opera in 2017: _Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets._ Its not everyone's cup of tea and it isn't as great as _Fifth Element,_ but I personally think its underrated and worth checking out. It definately has a lot of the visual flair and zany energy of its predecessor.
Valerian is based on a comic series and was the inspiration for the fifth element. The illustrator for the comic worked with the art department for bith movies. Fifth Element got made because the director couldn't get funding to do the comic adaption he wanted to do till many years later. Love how visually stunning Valerian is, though agreed Fifth element is a better script.
Valerian is a fun movie, personally I think one of the main reasons it failed is the casting of the main characters. They had NO chemistry and the acting is questionable at best. Which is too bad, because it could have been as good at Fifth Element.
Valerian movie is realy nice, less comedy like in the 5th Element, but maybe this was targeted at non European viewer this time 👌 I do hope that there will be funds for a 2nd adaptation of an album... This bring new vibes to the space opera scene 🚀
My guess is that the Diva either planned to have the stones surgically removed or something with her species' anatomy allowed them to be removed without killing her. But she died before that could happen. I also got the impression that she was telepathic and could not only sense Leeloo waiting in the hallway, but also subtly linked Leeloo and Corbin's minds during the concert so that he could sense that Leeloo was in immediate danger
When Lelu smiles at Corbin in the cab right before the cops show up - that might be one of the most adorable smiles I've ever seen. It's so cute and considering how the movie ends, makes total sense with the smile she makes.
I have loved this movie since I was a child. It is so timeless and has almost every "element" of emotion and theme that is still relevant today. I've seen it at least 20 times and never get tired of watching it again 😊
I'm sure many of us saw this movie more than dozen times. It gets better every time. Cool, knows not to take itself too serious but still magnificent, visually, the performances, the sitcom, as all good movies this can't age, we can still watch it nowadays.
this movie has always been in my top 10 movie list....so underrated....it still holds up today as it did back then....its definitely one of those movies you can watch multiple times & never get bored & discover something new each time....amazing world building
I'm so glad you guys picked up a detail that so many reactors miss when watching this movie. Diva Plava Laguna, whoever she was, appears to be highly psychic. She knows where to look for Leeloo, she knows who she is, she senses what is happening to Leeloo & her staff on the other side of the ship & she must have known she'd die in order for the world to be saved. I love there's no attempt to explain it. You just have to accept that in this universe, giant blue opera singing psychic ethereal aliens are a thing.
I love small details like how the cigarettes are mostly filter. Also 37:13 was the largest on set explosion ever at the time this was filmed. The costume design and lots of other behind-the-scenes stuff for this film are EXTREMELY fascinating, and show a ton of detail like the scale miniatures of the future NYC, costume design, and Leeloo's unique language.
Since the day this movie came out it has been firmly anchored in my top 5 all time favorite movies. I don’t expect it’ll ever be bumped out of that ranking
One of the few movies that I've kept the soundtrack score CD for decades on, fantastic music (that is on such a fantastic movie that it seems to take it's place amoung all the other great things and essentially gets lost in the crowd) ... And you guys mentioned it within seconds of this reaction, spot on (again, with ALL the other greats in this too of course, but on it's own merit the soundtrack is stunning) Thanks guys!
The fascinating thing for me about this movie is that, not only do the protagonist and antagonist never meet, they are never even aware of each other's existence.
Wish for younger generations had the opportunity to watch this in teathers. I saw it two times, in both the screen room was crowded and every single soul, gasped, laughed and cheered throughout the whole movie. A total blast 🍿
It is a silly cheesy movie but not only is it memorable, but it has so many quotes I still use today. My favorite being "I only speak two languages, english and bad english"
The only movie ever that I have seen more than once in the theater. Three times to be exact. It's funny, quirky, goofy, has action and drama, and cinematography is excellent. Also, just like Milla, it's visually stunning.
The Fifth Element is a master class in over the top imagination and bonkers conceptualization. Not many movies really swing for the fences at this level and actually make it work. Thank you Luc Besson, Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, and everyone else who worked on it!
One of my all-time favorite movies - Just takes me back to childhood. SO good. One bit that I love is the fact that the protagonist (Korben) and the antagonist (Zorg) never meet. They only cross each other's paths in that elevator scene in the hotel/resort. SUCH a nice little detail.
The editing on this is what makes it. Leeloo's fight scene intertwined with the deva's awesome performance is still fun to watch even after I don't know how many viewings. I also love the subtle things, like cigarettes are still a thing in the future, but now they're only 10% tobacco and 90% filter. Good stuff!
The Diva song is an aria from the opera Lucia Di Lammermoor’s third act. The notes and some of the lyrics were part of the action narrative in the film. If you know the aria and Italian, you will make the connection. The fight scene’s notes/singing/vocal fireworks were enhanced with computer purposefully to inhuman range. The human voice range cannot possibly reach the lowest and highest notes as performed in the film. That hasn’t stopped performers with freakishly high and low ranges to attempt a reproduction of the song. Some come really close, such as Dimash. I love this film, it improves with every viewing, a new brilliant detail is discovered. ❤
So many great scenes left out. Got to see the whole movie. One cut scene was Zorg at the factory trading the ZF 1 guns for the stones. His best line in the movie was Zorg " What the hell am I suppose to do with an empty case"?! Thank you for reviewing this movie!
Every single member of this cast gives 150%. They all went so damn over the top that ot goes from being corny and awkward to being just pure awesome. And Tucker outdid all of them. This is my favorite performance from Oldman, Tucker, Willis, Holm, all of them. It is quotable, rewatchable, hilarious and serious.

I grew up with this movie on all the time, my dad loved sci fi, my dad passed from brain cancer 6 years ago, I’m now 30, to this day this is one of my all time favorite/comfort movies, it’s so good
One of my favorite Sci Fi Action Adventure Movies! I went to go see this with my older brother and sister and we loved it! We cracked up laughing! Its 2001 meets DIE HARD, Star Wars, Judge Dredd, Indiana Jones, Enter The Dragon, Blade Runner, DUNE '84, Lawrence Of Arabia, James Bond, ROBOCOP and Total Recall.
Hope you guys check out Luc Besson’s LEON: The Professional. A kickass action drama 90s film with a great Gary Oldman and a young Natalie Portman and Jean Reno. If you can, watch the International Directors cut (130 minutes), not the theatrical that’s under 2 hours. So much context and depth is missed in that theatrical one that enhances the film experience.
The Professional and Fifth Element are far and away my favorite Besson flicks, though Unleashed and all the La Femme Nikita iterations hold a special place in my heart. The Taken and Transporter movies were good fun too even if they were ridiculous. Lucy, Columbiana, and District 13 were just so painfully bad tho, oof.
I never get tired of seeing this movie and I can’t recall how many times I’ve seen it.. top choice ❤ the music in this film is out of this world, no pun intended,starting with a car chase to an arabic tune.. this movie just has everything.. including Chris Tucker inventing livestream 😂❤ really happy to tag along! By the way, Mila Jojovich did an amazing job playing Joan of Ark
I would have given this two Oscar nods. Chris Tucker for Best Supporting Actor and Best Costume Design, Jean Paul Gautier. Look what he did for each individual character. Ruby’s outfits, LeeLoo in straps of material, that amazing orange shirt design for Corbin. The Diva! No explanation necessary. He seriously deserved a nomination. Mila had to memorize that new language that was specifically written for her and make it believable. Flying colors! The aria that the Diva sang was written so that NO human would be able to actually sing it, since she is an alien. When they recorded it, the singer shocked everyone by singing almost all of it. The parts that she couldn’t reach changed over to synthesizer. But it was so few times, I believe 3 at the most. The rest was the singer. Simply amazing!
I love this movie. It was very much ahead of its time. When it came out, sci fi movies were going through a phase where they looked very dark and kind of depressing and grungy. This movie was kind of light and inventive and beautiful. It still looks great.
so at the end of your review, no mention of Gary Oldman's performance, no mentions of the cool creature designs and practical effects, not even a mention of Chris Tucker's character. no mention of the big bad or really any supporting characters. Instead you want to talk about how this film needed more drama, etc. No it didn't! It's just a fun campy adventure with a pretty cool story written by a 15 -year old boy adapted to film.
Corbin Dallas! My sister adopted Ruby’s energy after seeing this movie for awhile. Don’t care what anyone says, this is a great movie. Just fun time with a great cast. Good chunk of my childhood was spent watching this.

The whiplash effect of the comedy versus drama, action versus quiet… That really was the vibe of the movie, and I understand that wasn’t quite what would appeal to you. I’m glad you liked of it what you did. This is an “anytime movie“ for me. If I’m scrolling the guide, and I see that this is on, it doesn’t matter what part it’s at, I’ll play it from there without bothering to restart, and I could do that every damn day. Maybe on subsequent viewings, you could come to appreciate it more, but again, I’m glad you liked what you did, and I love your channel 😌🙏
If only someone would react to the big blue, same director. Sad that no one pick movies that no one has reacted to on you tube. Big blue is one of my top 10 movies, haven't seen anyone react to it.
This is my all-time favorite movie, ever since I saw it for the first time as a kid. A part of my brain still thinks that this is what flying cars will look like in the future, if we ever make it that far. The sheer amount of worldbuilding just through set and costume design is so brilliant. In a day and age where so, so much of cinematic media is a remake or an adaptation of something, I really love and appreciate the originality of this story, even if it's not fully fleshed out in some parts. It's funny, it has action, it has romance. This movie is just everything to me.
Great reaction guys. It's a wild, over the top, crazy hilarious ride, on a small serious canvas. And i doubt, it ever tried to be more then that, and i love it for that. Just a good time with great performances, deliveries, and oneliners that stuck with so many of us throughout the years. Cheers! :)
This movie is hit or miss. I know so many people who don't like it or just frown. I myself LOVE that movie, even more so, since Luc Besson is French, and I grew up with Franco-Belgian comic book albums. He captured the essence of absurd humor and great graphics in this movie.
if you read the novelization of this movie, you'll learn that the Diva is a telepath and empath that also projects emotion as she sings. kind of like she feels emotion from the crowd, then her voice projects those emotions. since she has a broad range, she feels the emotions from Leeloo and that's when her style changes. this power is what makes her a fabulous singer because she can touch the audience in a very deep way.
I love that you are watching all these movies that are favorites of mine and loving and appreciating all the same things that i love about them. Love your work!
I have lost count of how many times I've seen this movie. The first time I couldn't believe how silly the whole premise was. By 3/4 of the way through, the complete over the top silliness just worked. It has since become one of my guilty pleasures and Ruby Rhod is the candied cherry on the top of this massive banana split. Of all the magnificent performances from this stellar cast, Chris Tucker absolutely *_killed it_* 🤣.

Some films are masterpieces but you can never watch them again due to the negative feelings they evoke. This film is endlessly rewatchable, which puts it near the top of the list for me. Entertainment should entertain and this movie definitely does that.
Ruby’s character was ahead of its time. The 90s predicted the rise of media mayhem,of the last 10 years and wrapped it up in one person.
41:50: Leeloo is passing out because she’s still suffering from being shot by Zorg, repeatedly. Remember, Zorg’s guns just have to hit once and every other shot goes to the same target spot, that’s what happened to Leeloo in the vent. Now pair her wounds(which are acceleratingly healing because of her perfect body system) with her disillusionment of Humanity(based on the violence of war, and its slaughter of life), Leeloo is quite literally giving in to the draining presence of death, which is implied to be, emanating stronger and stronger from the Evil Planet, racing to destroy Earth and the Elements.
The Diva Plavalaguna performance is, to mee, one of the greatest pieces of movie music... It's just SO cool! And there are singers out there who can actually perform it without autotune, which is pretty damn crazy.
This movie is just so 90's, loved it growing up but haven't watched it in forever. But it's definitely up there in my favourites list.

Omg!!! My FAVORITE Gary Oldman performance! Such an unhinged but hysterical villain. I saw this movie at 7 years old as I was becoming interested in sci-fi and space in general. Zorg is a fantastic villain!

Oldman is better in Leon The Professional IMO. But amazing in both.
I loved his character in this, even though Gary Oldman said he disliked how he played it. When he shows off the flame thrower, turns to the camera and says "My favorite", sounding like Forrest Gump having picked the best chocolate from the box, come on, that's comic genius. This might be my favorite role he ever played, definitely one of my favorite villains of all time. Mr. Oldman, even when you "mess up", you do something awesome.

All these years later and there has still never been anything like this film, a perfect combination of inventiveness, brilliant editing, and an aesthetic unique to itself.
The guy who did the score for the movie didn't have much opera experience, so he wrote a vocal part that he thought would be impossible to sing, making it sound less human and more alien. Well, turns out the vocalist COULD sing the part and it is just a joy to hear.

Eric Serra the composer (he composed most if not all Luc Besson’s movies scores) is an incredible bass player. The first part is from a classic opera named Lucia di Lammermoor and the funk/dance part is Serra’s work :)
Although the singer did a great job, it's pretty obvious that her voice was artificially modified in the more extreme high and low notes.
What's perhaps more impressive is singers who do it live without modification.
@@ariochiv exactly, most of the action part of the operatic song is also very fast-cutting sticcato notes sung (edited) in a 'non human' way on purpose (she's an alien singer after all) I'm sure she sung every note, but the transition between notes was edited and artificial on purpose by the composer.
I've listened to the soundtrack since back in the day, and Eric Serra absolutely nailed it in fitting the music to the vastly different scenes in this!

Mostly true. While Inva Mula did sing the entire thing, some parts were edited at a faster pace after she sung them individually. To paraphrase Eric Serra, he wrote the song expecting Inva to only be able to sing 65% of it, but was impressed that she managed to do closer to 85% of it.
Luc Besson came up with the whole concept when he was 16, including Divine Language that Leeloo speaks.
In fact, him and Mila held whole conversations off-camera in Divine.
Yeah, her fluency in rattling off the language was amazingly smooth.
Considering what they did together, Luc must have added some mighty interesting words to that vocabulary...
Ruby Rhod’s character concept was Prince, but he refused to be in it. I think the choice they did make was great.

It's a very French Scifi movie. If you have seen other French Scifi/Fantasy movies of the 1990s-2010s like _The Company of Wolves, The City of Lost Children, Valerian & Veronique_ (based on a longer graphic novel series), they're all very eccentric, almost dream-like. There's also _Immortel_ which is sadly a bit to bonkers to be enjoyable.
The pacing is typically french too... alot of American reviewers I've seen seem baffled by it because they're so used to the American movie three act structure.
This movie holds a very special place in my heart as it was a beautiful and innocent time going to the theater on a Friday night when it was released and a lot of my friends and I had no idea what an awesome couple of hours was in store for us. Long live TFE!

There’s an 80s adult cartoon film called Heavy Metal, that’s an anthology film. I’m convinced that one of the main characters in one of the stories is what inspired the character of Corbin Dallas. It’s almost a carbon copy being based in kind of a dystopian future, with a taxi driver that looks and even acts similar.

Such a great movie! The "Divine Language" spoken by Leeloo is a fictional language of 400 words, invented by Besson. To practice, Jovovich and Besson held conversations and exchanged letters in the language. Besson was then married to Maïwenn Le Besco, who played the role of the Diva Plavalaguna when filming began.
And Besson became romantically interested in Milla during this movie.

The phrases "Multi-Pass!" and "Bzzz-bzzz-bzzz!" have been part of my vocabulary for a couple of decades now. Jean-Paul Gaultier was the costume designer on this superb and hugely underrated Luc Besson film.
There are movies that shows at the right time and place and can never be remade again. This was such a movie.
Perfection in every single second. Visuals, audio, actors, plot, dialogs, humor. Everything was just spot on.
Luc Besson directed another Space Opera in 2017: _Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets._ Its not everyone's cup of tea and it isn't as great as _Fifth Element,_ but I personally think its underrated and worth checking out. It definately has a lot of the visual flair and zany energy of its predecessor.
Valerian is based on a comic series and was the inspiration for the fifth element. The illustrator for the comic worked with the art department for bith movies. Fifth Element got made because the director couldn't get funding to do the comic adaption he wanted to do till many years later. Love how visually stunning Valerian is, though agreed Fifth element is a better script.
Valerian is a fun movie, personally I think one of the main reasons it failed is the casting of the main characters. They had NO chemistry and the acting is questionable at best. Which is too bad, because it could have been as good at Fifth Element.

My guess is that the Diva either planned to have the stones surgically removed or something with her species' anatomy allowed them to be removed without killing her. But she died before that could happen.
I also got the impression that she was telepathic and could not only sense Leeloo waiting in the hallway, but also subtly linked Leeloo and Corbin's minds during the concert so that he could sense that Leeloo was in immediate danger
When Lelu smiles at Corbin in the cab right before the cops show up - that might be one of the most adorable smiles I've ever seen. It's so cute and considering how the movie ends, makes total sense with the smile she makes.
I have loved this movie since I was a child. It is so timeless and has almost every "element" of emotion and theme that is still relevant today. I've seen it at least 20 times and never get tired of watching it again 😊

this movie has always been in my top 10 movie list....so underrated....it still holds up today as it did back then....its definitely one of those movies you can watch multiple times & never get bored & discover something new each time....amazing world building
I'm so glad you guys picked up a detail that so many reactors miss when watching this movie. Diva Plava Laguna, whoever she was, appears to be highly psychic. She knows where to look for Leeloo, she knows who she is, she senses what is happening to Leeloo & her staff on the other side of the ship & she must have known she'd die in order for the world to be saved. I love there's no attempt to explain it. You just have to accept that in this universe, giant blue opera singing psychic ethereal aliens are a thing.
I love small details like how the cigarettes are mostly filter. Also 37:13 was the largest on set explosion ever at the time this was filmed. The costume design and lots of other behind-the-scenes stuff for this film are EXTREMELY fascinating, and show a ton of detail like the scale miniatures of the future NYC, costume design, and Leeloo's unique language.

One of the best movies out there, its rewatchable, alot of good quotes that you remember love it, saw it in the cinema and was blown away.
The fascinating thing for me about this movie is that, not only do the protagonist and antagonist never meet, they are never even aware of each other's existence.
Wish for younger generations had the opportunity to watch this in teathers. I saw it two times, in both the screen room was crowded and every single soul, gasped, laughed and cheered throughout the whole movie. A total blast 🍿

The only movie ever that I have seen more than once in the theater. Three times to be exact. It's funny, quirky, goofy, has action and drama, and cinematography is excellent. Also, just like Milla, it's visually stunning.
The Fifth Element is a master class in over the top imagination and bonkers conceptualization. Not many movies really swing for the fences at this level and actually make it work. Thank you Luc Besson, Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, and everyone else who worked on it!
One of my all-time favorite movies - Just takes me back to childhood. SO good.
One bit that I love is the fact that the protagonist (Korben) and the antagonist (Zorg) never meet. They only cross each other's paths in that elevator scene in the hotel/resort. SUCH a nice little detail.
The editing on this is what makes it. Leeloo's fight scene intertwined with the deva's awesome performance is still fun to watch even after I don't know how many viewings. I also love the subtle things, like cigarettes are still a thing in the future, but now they're only 10% tobacco and 90% filter. Good stuff!
The Diva song is an aria from the opera Lucia Di Lammermoor’s third act. The notes and some of the lyrics were part of the action narrative in the film. If you know the aria and Italian, you will make the connection.
The fight scene’s notes/singing/vocal fireworks were enhanced with computer purposefully to inhuman range. The human voice range cannot possibly reach the lowest and highest notes as performed in the film. That hasn’t stopped performers with freakishly high and low ranges to attempt a reproduction of the song. Some come really close, such as Dimash.
I love this film, it improves with every viewing, a new brilliant detail is discovered. ❤
So many great scenes left out. Got to see the whole movie. One cut scene was Zorg at the factory trading the ZF 1 guns for the stones. His best line in the movie was Zorg " What the hell am I suppose to do with an empty case"?! Thank you for reviewing this movie!

Every single member of this cast gives 150%. They all went so damn over the top that ot goes from being corny and awkward to being just pure awesome. And Tucker outdid all of them. This is my favorite performance from Oldman, Tucker, Willis, Holm, all of them. It is quotable, rewatchable, hilarious and serious.

One of my favorite Sci Fi Action Adventure Movies! I went to go see this with my older brother and sister and we loved it! We cracked up laughing!
Its 2001 meets DIE HARD, Star Wars, Judge Dredd, Indiana Jones, Enter The Dragon, Blade Runner, DUNE '84, Lawrence Of Arabia, James Bond, ROBOCOP and Total Recall.
This is the kind of movie that you watch over and over and appreciate more and more every time you watch it.
Hope you guys check out Luc Besson’s LEON: The Professional. A kickass action drama 90s film with a great Gary Oldman and a young Natalie Portman and Jean Reno. If you can, watch the International Directors cut (130 minutes), not the theatrical that’s under 2 hours. So much context and depth is missed in that theatrical one that enhances the film experience.
The Professional and Fifth Element are far and away my favorite Besson flicks, though Unleashed and all the La Femme Nikita iterations hold a special place in my heart. The Taken and Transporter movies were good fun too even if they were ridiculous. Lucy, Columbiana, and District 13 were just so painfully bad tho, oof.

I would have given this two Oscar nods. Chris Tucker for Best Supporting Actor and Best Costume Design, Jean Paul Gautier. Look what he did for each individual character. Ruby’s outfits, LeeLoo in straps of material, that amazing orange shirt design for Corbin. The Diva! No explanation necessary. He seriously deserved a nomination.
Mila had to memorize that new language that was specifically written for her and make it believable. Flying colors!
The aria that the Diva sang was written so that NO human would be able to actually sing it, since she is an alien. When they recorded it, the singer shocked everyone by singing almost all of it. The parts that she couldn’t reach changed over to synthesizer. But it was so few times, I believe 3 at the most. The rest was the singer. Simply amazing!
And since then a lot of singers took the challenge and sing the whole song. 😂

I love this movie. It was very much ahead of its time. When it came out, sci fi movies were going through a phase where they looked very dark and kind of depressing and grungy. This movie was kind of light and inventive and beautiful. It still looks great.
so at the end of your review, no mention of Gary Oldman's performance, no mentions of the cool creature designs and practical effects, not even a mention of Chris Tucker's character. no mention of the big bad or really any supporting characters. Instead you want to talk about how this film needed more drama, etc. No it didn't! It's just a fun campy adventure with a pretty cool story written by a 15 -year old boy adapted to film.

This is my all-time favorite movie, ever since I saw it for the first time as a kid. A part of my brain still thinks that this is what flying cars will look like in the future, if we ever make it that far. The sheer amount of worldbuilding just through set and costume design is so brilliant. In a day and age where so, so much of cinematic media is a remake or an adaptation of something, I really love and appreciate the originality of this story, even if it's not fully fleshed out in some parts. It's funny, it has action, it has romance. This movie is just everything to me.
Guys you gotta check out more Chris Tucker movies like the Rush hour trilogy with Jackie Chan and Friday with Ice cube 😂😂. It's fucking hilarious

This movie is hit or miss. I know so many people who don't like it or just frown. I myself LOVE that movie, even more so, since Luc Besson is French, and I grew up with Franco-Belgian comic book albums. He captured the essence of absurd humor and great graphics in this movie.
if you read the novelization of this movie, you'll learn that the Diva is a telepath and empath that also projects emotion as she sings. kind of like she feels emotion from the crowd, then her voice projects those emotions. since she has a broad range, she feels the emotions from Leeloo and that's when her style changes. this power is what makes her a fabulous singer because she can touch the audience in a very deep way.
I love that you are watching all these movies that are favorites of mine and loving and appreciating all the same things that i love about them. Love your work!

I have lost count of how many times I've seen this movie. The first time I couldn't believe how silly the whole premise was. By 3/4 of the way through, the complete over the top silliness just worked. It has since become one of my guilty pleasures and Ruby Rhod is the candied cherry on the top of this massive banana split. Of all the magnificent performances from this stellar cast, Chris Tucker absolutely *_killed it_* 🤣.
