  • Here is a quick fix for alcohol markers that have gone dry. You will need an eyedropper (or pipette or syringe) and denatured alcohol (or ethanol) to implement this quick fix!

    We must protect Lindsay at all costs! I have been watching Lindsay for years but I finally decided to use a set of alcohol markers I invested in about a year ago and one was dried out, as well as the my very first Copic marker I received in a subscription box. I was so frustrated and ready to give up on alcohol markers for good, because my watercolor markers don’t do this🤞🏾I knew Lindsay would have a solution. Thanks for saving us so much money 🤫 The art companies might not like that too much.

    This is such a fabulous tip!! I purchased all the original sets and when I went to use one, it was so dry I put it away in disgust and ate a bowl of ice cream instead! My hips send a huge hug!! :-)~TFS, Sharon

    Hi Lindsay, I want to tell you how you saved my old, old, sharpie markers. My favorite sharpie markers are the old fine tip. They don't make them any longer. I hate it! They are the ones that do not have the tiny felt tip that always messes up. I decided to give your idea a try. I removed, very carefully, the tip piece and put several drops of memento ink in it. Let it sit for a while and sure enough, I can use it again. It remains to be seen as to how long but maybe you have saved my favorite markers. Thank you.

    I found the Denatured Alcohol at Walmart in the hardware department around the paints. Glycerine was over in the drug area next to the rubbing alcohol. Two must have item in the thrifty frugal arsenal. Surprisingly easy to find.

    I had bought a complete set of these from AC Moore and didn't use them much initially. When I went back to use them a year later, many of them were completely dried up. I tried this with the denatured alcohol, and it totally fixed them all! Thanks for the tip!

I did not know that they could be rejuvenated. I have a ceiling fan going at all times in my craft room, which makes things dry out faster. Now, I store all of my markers in airtight containers.

    I have all 168 of the originals and I too have had some dry out. Thanks for the great hint. I will eventually get the rest of the refills but at least this will allow me to use the markers until then. I love Crafter's Companion products and Spectrum Noir's especially. They are very economical as far as alcohol ink markers go.

    In Australia, de-natured alcohol is methylated spirits - I asked my hubby what de-natured alcohol was used for and he told me what it was, duh!
    Anyway, thanks for this, I have several Spectrum Noir pens, brand new, never used, that just don't work at all! I didn't want to go to the expense of replacing them if I didn't have to, so this solution is a great deal of help. I dare say we have methylated spirits in the shed somewhere for woodworking and cleaning car parts and stuff.

      lindsay has already done a video on cheaper alternatives to copics. here she is using spectrum noir, which i also have, brought from a sale at crafters companion, which are a cheaper alternative to copics, spectrum noir are made by crafters companion, you buy from their website, they have a UK website and an american website, just make sure you are on the correct one for your country. Another good alternative is promarkers, which i also have, i bought half price in a december/January sale, from hobbycraft in UK, but i don't know how easy they are to get hold of in america, a really cheap but very good alternative is ohuhu markers available online from amazon, i did a lot of research online and loads of people say ohuhu are cheap but very good. most of the cheaper brands you cannot buy replacement ink like you can with copics, but of course there are other ways to revitalise them, as shown here by lindsay. I do not own any copic markers, they are very expensive, and i don't believe in paying that much money, when there are other brands that are just as good, in my opinion.

    Hey Lindsay, this video is great! I have some Chameleon pens that are quite expensive and there's a colorless blender liquid in one end that is used to lighten the color in the nib by using a fusion process, so you can start coloring with a highlight effect. As you color it gets darker, working toward a shadowed effect. Do you know if you can use denatured alcohol in the pen, in place of the colorless blender liquid that you can buy?

    I did this just last week with a load of my spectrum noirs. It's a great fix isn't it.

      Yes! That old style marker must have an air gap somewhere but it's nice to know you can fix them and not have to trash them:) I hate waste:)

      @@thefrugalcrafter I know me too. I'm hoping to start crafting again soon so went through all my spectrum noirs and had about 30 that had dried up. I had barely used them so knew they weren't empty. On a couple of them even after I had reactivated them the nib was still dry so I just added some alcohol directly to the nib just get the moisture back it in. That worked great too. I wouldn't of been happy if I had to throw all of them out!!

    Lindsay great info as usual! i have a question....i bought a big set of gel pens from craft store and hardly used them, but stored properly and most are dry, but shows ink.... how can i revive them?? some leaked out :( #2. what if anything can you use to replace ink in gel pens and markers? #3. also, does the alcohol tip work for just those kinds of markers? do they say 'alcohol' based on them? how do ya know?? ahead of time for the info! :)

    • @thefrugalcrafter

      I've never had much luck reviving them, sometimes heating the tips with a heat gul will work then scribbling them:)

    I don't have any of the alcohol based markers, poor me, but I will keep this in mind in case I ever get some. I bought two Distress Ink pads that came with little ink in them and I had to buy reinkers before I could use them. I contacted Ranger and what a run around they gave me and then told me the ink pads come with ink - duh!

    I so needed this tip. Can you use alcohol from the drug store for this also?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Denatured alcohol is stronger but rubbing alcohol might work, scribble some ink on a piece of plastic and dab it with a q-tip dipped in alcohol and see if it dissolves the ink. If so try it:)

    will 91% isopropyl alcohol work? Thanks for all your wonderful videos and help!

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jan Stroh it will but the markers might dry out sooner, denatured or ethanol is best.

    Lindsay, can you use regular rubbing alcohol? Or does it have to be denatured alcohol? What is the difference in using the different alcohols?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Denatured is stronger and contains less water.

    Hi lindsay. here in the uk you can only legally get it with purple or blue dye in in. Do you no if this will effect the colour of the pens if I was to use this? Sorry to keep pestering you, I have a very tight budget and would hate to waste anymore pens than I have to.
    Thank you robyn x

      Robyn Evans I don't know...can you get Ethanol? That will work. Or copic blending solution which is overpriced Ethanol. Also I have heard that the booze Everclear will work but I have not tried it.

      This has now arrived, along with a leaflet giving masses of precautions which make it seem very scarey to use!
