SINN 556 - two *tiny* details not mentioned in other reviews, one good, one bad!

  • Not a professional youtuber! Not trying! Sorry for poor quality! Hi everyone. I watched a number of reviews and did not come across anyone mentioning these-not to say they didn't, I just didn't encounter it! Just wanted to help people deliberate their watch purchases if I can. Especially because it is difficult to get hands-on with one of these in the United States.
    First detail: the way the hands are painted seems unintentional. There is no apparent logic to the location where the lume begins on each hand relative to the others.
    Second detail: the case has this beautiful scallop which thins out the case flank, and mates perfectly with the screw-down caseback. Subtle, but a world of difference compared to Tudor, for example.
    Good luck!

    I love it, don’t mind the lume, a perfect universe is slightly imperfect.

    You offer two good observations: neither were mentioned in any other review that I watched. Thank you for pointing these out to us - those who are considering a Sinn 556 purchase. The paint on the hands not lining up is one of those things that i cannot now un-see! Great eye for spotting these two items.

    The sinn 556i has everything a great everyday watch needs.. a subtle date window, understated minimalist design, a decorated movement seen through an exhibition caseback, sapphire glass, high contrast, glossy very black dial, 200m of water resistance, acceptable accuracy, drilled lugs.. it can be that one watch in a one watch collection, it screams quality tool watch yet is not flashy. It is a gada watch. Sinn should be applauded for such a genius design.

      But clearly that's a flaw with the lume that no one has mentioned

      Their “genius” design is undercut severely by the horrific hand painting debauchery.

    I believe the staggered lume is an intentional design feature that helps the user differentiate the hands more easily when they are overlapping. Although some people won't like how it looks, from a usability perspective, this is actually a better design than if the hands had the lume all begin at the same distance from the center of the dial.

    • @threefive2072
      @threefive2072  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      forgive what may seem obtuse, but if the hands are overlapping, what need is there to differentiate them?

      No no no. It serves ZERO purpose. It’s total sloppiness in design.

    Little details make a big difference. Great observations. Sinn should get group reviews of prototypes for stuff like this.
    Damasko used to make Sinn cases. Damasko is a steel company first, watch company much later in the company's history. Damaska works with submarine steel. That's how Sinn got into it.

    Very pertinent remarks. If I were Sinn, I would line up the lume on the hands, because it could give some more class to this otherwise wonderful watch.

    Good video and nice watch by the way. In my case I'm with the 356 flieger, well the classic one with plexi and black dial to be precise. I love it so much that i paid one in full, 1800euro in Vienna, unplanned, in their AD, on one that proved to be a very old and defective piece but was sold as new. I sent it to Sinn and got a brand new one that does not reset properly (chrono), the lugs have 20.5mm and the date text is not properly centered... So yeah.. they do seem to have issues all over the product lines...

    I have a Sinn 556A never noticed the hand mismatch, more irritating to me is that the 2nd hand isn't lumed.

    I have the same 556 with the red seconds. I do not have this issue with watch…it lines up perfectly.
    Maybe worth sending an email to Sinn. I’m sure it’s well within warranty…or enjoy the quirk.

    • @threefive2072
      @threefive2072  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      contacted sinn, FYI and their reply is that this is absolutely normal for this model. they sent back an image from their website with the length of the black part of the hands measured in pixels.

      please post pictures / make video and add link to comments here. this is probably the only way the enthusiast community can have some influence over product design ... sinn will eventually realize we come to youtube for real reviews.

      an update on the lume alignment: it's irritating enough i might end up selling this watch. i'm toying with the idea of learning how to repaint the hands to fix it ... not sure it's worth it ... will keep you posted.

    YES! YES! YES! This horrific hand painting is a DISASTER that really has ruined the brand for me. Ever since I owned a Bell & Ross Instrument which has PERFECT consistency with hand paint, Sinn has been “nails on the chalkboard” to look at. Having said this I have found solace in their models with solidly painted hands, including their special editions 565L and 556 Japan LHD Green dial for example.

  • @chadclark2684
    @chadclark2684 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmm, mine does not have the staggered lume on the hands; luck of the draw I suppose, but small potatoes in the grand scheme of things … this watch rocks!!

    • @threefive2072
      @threefive2072  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i'd love to see pictures of this. the official response from watchbuys was that they should be staggered.

    • @threefive2072
      @threefive2072  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i guess it depends on why you like mechanical watches. part of me wishes it was just "small potatoes" ... would be so much easier to enjoy the hobby, but not how i am wired! personally i am fascinated with the precision of these small machines. this lume issue seems either imprecise or an oversight ... either way, not impressed.
      from a design perspective though i have realized what really bothers me is the lack of a central axis. with the white paint starting at three different radii, the "centroid," as it were, defined by the these coordinates shifts as the hands move around the dial. the hands seem to float in space. for such a simple watch dial, i would prefer that they were anchored.

    • @jaredcoffin3907
      @jaredcoffin3907 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh no. Yours must be a different model. ALL the 565 and 556 and even the U1s have this disastrous paint outrage.

    • @threefive2072

      maybe so, but a lot of fine watchmaking is about an attention to detail and precision that can only be seen under magnification. check out grand seiko or lange finishing if you want to see how deep the rabbit hole goes. there are others but these brands seem to have a lot of content showcasing their work.

    • @jaredcoffin3907
      @jaredcoffin3907 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ohhh no. Not OCD. it. It’s an OBVIOUS disaster in dial design. Can’t unsee it.

  • @call1a1rich
    @call1a1rich 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    well, wrong. the luminescence of hour and minute markers start at the exact same distance to the center of the dial. it’s 3,6mm on both arms.
    so why don’t you check your facts before you do a yelling video..? I got the 556, checked it, took 1 minute.

    Sinn 556 a small watch 38mm but looking extra big. It’s not the lugtolug. It just look big.

    • @threefive2072
      @threefive2072  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      agree. it wears larger than a lot of 38.5's. it has a large dial, narrow bezel, and wide lug spacing (and not taper on the stock strap) ... all this makes a difference. it wears more like a 40 to me.
