Something of note is how backwards compatibility was handled. In a way, the Gameboy Colour was pretty much just an overclocked Gameboy internally, which is why it could be considered the same generation. The Gameboy Advance on the other hand had a completely different processor, switching from a Sharp processor related to the 8080 and Z80 (yes, that is the granddaddy of the modern x86(_64)) to an ARM chip. While the Gameboy Colour could run Gameboy games natively using the same hardware as Gameboy Colour games, the Gameboy Advance had to essentially embed an entire Gameboy Colour inside it in order to run their games. When the DS released, Nintendo used a similar system where the DS contains an entire Gameboy Advance, but without the Gameboy Colour components, even if this time both of their processors were from the same family. Unlike the GBA however, DS games would actually use both processors in order to run, so when the DSi came out, it was still required to have the GBA processor in order to run DS games even if it lacked the cartridge slot, and same with the 3DS. As a result, the GBA virtual console games from the 3DS Ambassador Program run completely natively with no CPU emulation needed. Despite not having a GBA cartridge slot, the 3DS was still technically backwards compatible with every prior handheld other than the Gameboy and Gameboy Colour (and those both had games released using standard emulation). The Switch is the only Nintendo handheld so far, and only console except for the N64, to not have any related systems in the same family.
This was awesome to read! Thank you for sharing! I had no idea GBA games were played natively on the system. That's why they feel so good to play on it.

Such a well produced video. I keep coming back to this video and getting some Nintendo history lessons. I also enjoy listening to this while doing my school work.
I remember when the first kid in the neighbourhood got a Gameboy more than 30years ago. We all huddled to watch him play but it was so hard because the screen had a very narrow view. Still we didn't know better back then, it was mind blowing. I didn't have money and didn't own one until the Gameboy color. Oh that was fun to play. I still remember the bendable light extension you could plug in that would blind you when reflecting off the screen. We are so privileged these days, in a way I wish I was a kid this generation. Now back to playing my Switch.
I remember those lights. I used one on my Original GBA. It also got in the way of the screen, so you had to angle it just right so it didn't obstruct your view. Those were good times. Who knew how great things would become?
So fun fact! There was actually another revision of the GameBoy called the GameBoy Light. This was the first GameBoy and Nintendo Handheld to have a Backlight! Even before the SP! However, this was never released outside of Japan, which is a bummer!
It's such a great Game Boy. I have a Game Boy Light in my collection. When I made this video I didn't think I should add it because it was a Japan exclusive, but I found out quickly that I should have included it. Many people have asked where it was. To make up for my mistake I made a whole video dedicated to it. If you care to watch, here's the link: th-cam.com/video/tZjM3dP0WQA/w-d-xo.html
The very first Nintendo handheld system that I had was the classic Nintendo Game Boy Color handheld systems alongside with Pokémon Red and Blue versions back in late 1998 as we were kids. It was an amazing experience and amazing ride playing handheld games (mostly console systems) during my childhood years.
Great story! I wish I had played Pokemon Red or Blue when I was younger. I instead played Metroid 2 and Link's Awakening over and over. I don't think I finished either of them back then.
Nintendo went all out with the 3ds. (edit) The GBA was the first system I ever played on and the first game I ever played was Mario Kart Super Circuit.
It’s has always been very excited to see the next steps in gaming. How will they improve on the switch and sp5. But the last few months I have been very nostalgic and been playing a lot on my gameboy and 3ds. Seeing this video only increases my nostalgia. GJ ;)
Yeah, I can’t imagine anyone taking the Virtual Boy on the go. I know it’s technically a portable console, but I don’t know how it would work without a surface to rest on.
Bits have to do with the architecture of the main processor. Currently, most modern devices use 64-bit (there was a big transition from 32-bit in both the PC and mobile market). Because of how permutations work, 64-bit is about the upper range of what consumer devices will use. Companies did a shit job of explaining what power was at the time. Really, RAM was just as important as any metric of bits.
This video.is great . I remmeber playing gameboy and gameboy color back.in ealry 90s . It was revolutionary and high tech coming from nes .. the feeling of a new transition on tech.. and now how far we have come.. 🙏
I dont blame you for not showing the virtual boy. Idk why they said its a portable . Yeeeeah carry around these weird glasses and a controller that makes sence
GBA SP is my favorite handheld of all time. The clam shell design, being able to play any gameboy game, and having that back lit screen. I still have one of 3 me and my brothers had as kids. I'm still on the lookout for the other 2, especially because one has Leaf Green in it, and I don't want to spend $80 on an almost 20 year old game. I did get a DS Lite, but I think it was used because the DS prongs were corroded, and games would stop working after a few days. So I continued playing my GBA SP even though kids my age played the DS. I eventually got a 3DS XL in 2014, and I played the few games I have on it, but man, I wished I played it more and used its online features more.
@@NeanderMeander looking forward to following along with your channel. I bought a 3DS turquoise about a month ago. I haven’t owned a Nintendo handheld (other than switch) since the Game Boy pocket back in the 90s. I’ve already started grabbing up every DS lite and DSI and game I can find cheap since then. Down the rabbit hole.
To me the GBC was also a real new console. But it was a smart move from Nintendo not to market it that way. But just like the GBA after it, it had it's own games and it had backward compatibility. But I think some people see it as a revision because there where also games that worked on the original and had extra features for the color (the black carts). The GBC was twice as fast as the GB (and the GBA was twice as fast as the GBC).
That's a good point on the backwards compatible black carts! I can't definitely see why people see it as revision. But, also as you stated, it's has all the hallmarks of a new console.
The reason the DSI doesn’t have a gameboy advance slot is because they wanted a more sleek look for their console. They might have added it but it most likely took up more space. So it got emitted.
Yea it’s just that slot takes up a lot of space, plus they might have been trying to phase out the gameboy to get more people to get ds games. Or move on. But it kinda makes sense why they removed it
My first console was the Nintendo DS Lite. It was the shiny black one and along with it came Super Mario 64 DS, my first game ever. It was a present from my dad for my 5th birthday.
@@NeanderMeander And the design looks so beautiful for such an old console. Nintendo really outdid themselves when designing the DS Lite. It looks so modern and minimal. I still have it but it doesn't work. I just keep it for the memories but I do have a grey Switch Lite.
@@NeanderMeander Yeah i get it, just wish it got more love, it was and still is a great system and i think people are slowly starting to realise that but it will always be just that middle child between the wii and the switch. :)
8:59 Lemme explain what bits are (Tldr: the more bits a system has, the more possible variations a byte can have.) Alright, now for a more technical explanation. To understand what I mean, first lemme explain what a bit is in the first place. Bits are literally 1s and 0s. On and off. 8 of them (on older systems at least, I'm talking 80s and early 90s), and you've got a byte. 00000000, 01001010, 10110100, etc. This is 8-bit. The max number you can really get without workarounds in 8-bit is 255, or ff in hexadecimal (hexadecimal is basically a better way to represent byte values easily with values ranging from 0-f (0-9 then a-f being 10-16)). However, the more bits you have, the higher this value is, with the limit for 64-bit maxing out at 9,223,372,036,854,775,807. The way you actually write the values down starting at the 8-bit level is 00000000 (with certain 0s being replaced with 1s obviously), and for every new bit level (16-bit, 32-bit, and 64-bit), you'd double the amount of rows of 00000000s. For example: 8-bit: 00000000 16-bit: 00000000 00000000 32-bit: 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 64-bit: 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 Quite basically, bits are funky things and I like ranting about this crap on the internet to people because it makes the brain go brrrr
Though the switch has great graphics I still don’t know if I like my “new” 3ds more! I just has so many memory’s on it especially in the camera!( also I LOVE those 20th anniversary blastoise cover plates I tried to get them on eBay but they are like 40-80 dollar$
The 3DS is great! I’m a huge fan! I also really like the Switch. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. But they’re also both really fun to play! I had no idea those cover plates were going for so much! I got the system when it released. I love the size of the New 3DS, which is why I bought it.
I had a ds lite. Loved it. Traded it for a dsi. Loved that one too, but not enough to keep it. Traded it for a 3ds xl. Still have it today. I decided to homebrew it because the e shop shut down. Hard to believe I only had 2 games for the system.
I have a few things I regret selling too. But who would have known how popular gaming would be now? I think we sold our old things to progress forward. As it turns out, the old stuff is just as good and maybe better than the new stuff.
I have a few handhelds I regret selling also: GameBoy Color GameBoy Pocket GameBoy Advance SP AGS-101 GameBoy Micro DS Lite I wish I had kept these for the backwards compatibility and the backlight. If I could find even a couple of these, I would buy them and the games I had for them again.
It's definitely worth mentioning. I intentionally left if off thinking I would base this video on just the North American releases. It was a misguiding decision. I did make a video all about it to try and make up for not including it here.
So the GameBoy Color has it's own games, that can't be played on the older Gameboys, and it's a separate generation... The DSi does the same but it's considered in the same generation as DS? Great video though! Nice work
Thanks for watching! I do consider the Game Boy Color as a separate generation because of how big the game library is for it. I know it's not a popular opinion but it feels right!
I feel like new 3ds is actually a good name because it tells you that you have the latest model even if I doesn’t stick forever. The name makes sense to me because new means it’s the newest version.
You might be the only person I’ve heard that is true for them. The problem with the word “new” is when buying in the used market. New and “new” are very different things. If they had just called it “super” or “pro” or “deluxe” or any word meaning better it would have been simpler. But now, even a 100 years from now, that revision will always be called “New 3DS”. Think about that. In a century, it will still have to be referred to with the “new” moniker.
I think it’s hard to argue that the New 3DS XL is the best all-in-one Nintendo handheld system these days (especially if you mod it). Having said that, the DS Lite is probably the best designed handheld Nintendo ever made. That thing somehow manages to be slick, comfortable, with a lot of hardware options.
@@NeanderMeander I realized I messed up what I said. I think the New 3DS XL is my favorite Nintendo handheld once modded. It becomes an all in one 3DS, DS, GBA, GBC, and GB machine. Plus it can do some older consoles as well (including the Playstation, if you can believe that). I also love my Vita but that serves a whole other itch.
I try to reply to everyone who takes the time to watch and comment on my videos. Time is precious, the least amount of appreciation I could do is acknowledge that I’ve read and appreciate their comment.
“Calling back to the original Game Boy Advance, which was the last Nintendo portable to feature a non-closable design” GameBoy Micro: am I a joke to you? Also I’m kinda surprise you didn’t mention the Virtual Boy nor the Game Boy Light
Yeah, you got me! I slipped while writting my script. It's funny because the Game Boy Micro is one my favorite handheld consoles. I didn't mention the Game Boy Light because it was a Japan exclusive and I didn't know it existed until I saw some TH-cam videos about it. I did make a video dedicated to it that mentions this video in the beginning. The Virtual Boy was marketed as a portable system, but was it really? It had to be mounted on a stand and it didn't have a head strap. That's why I left it off. I probably should have at least mentioned it.
So I don't want to bother you on the exclusion of the Game Boy Light, I can see you made up for that which is awesome, but you also excluded the Pokémon Mini & it's revision called the Nintendo Pocket Pikachu, the Virtual Boy, the Switch V2, & the Switch OLED Model (Even though that last one came out after this video had already released).
Just saying that you forgot - Nintendo Pokémon Mini - Nintendo Gameboy Advance SP AGS 001 - Nintendo Gamdboy Advance IPS and now Nintendo Switch OLED Model' (I don't blame you for not including it, it was released when this video wasn't released.)
You are right. I can't believe I said that in the video. I even went back and checked my script. Sure enough it says 2017. Huge miss in my part. Thanks for letting me know.
My only problem with the gba line is the fact they didn’t have four buttons from the start triggers, not including triggers but all in All I still love them regardless
Bits are just how many 1 and 0 combined are one value. 32-Bit means that each operation can handle 2^32 long numbers. 64-Bit would be 2^64 and so on. That means the Prozessor can crunch bigger numbers at once and the screen can use way more colors (8-Bit screens are limited to 256 colors per pixel for example).
It’s tucked away in my closet. I went back and forth on if I should add it into the video. I chose not to because I think it’s such a unique console it deserves its own video to spotlight it. I guess it wouldn’t have hurt to have added it here.
I didn’t mind the batteries all that much on my Game Boy systems. It was the Game Gear where it was really bad! I had a Game Boy and my brother had the Game Gear. I was really jealous of the lit color screen until we found out how many batteries it ate through.
I absolutely love the Nintendo Gameboy micro and New Nintendo 3DS because of the swappable faceplates, the galaxy themed New Nintendo 3DS XL also looks great, I really hope they do something like that in the future with their next system, The switch has great games but the system and software itself feel so corporate and soulless because it has no music and themes and stuff like that,
The Switch in compared to Nintendo’s past handhelds and home consoles is exactly that, sterile, corporate, and soulless. Like you said, the games are great, but the console itself has been kind of a bore.
I love how the GBA SP got all this credit for folding when Nintendo already did that with the Game & Watch. I also never understood how the SP is held as the best handheld ever. To me, it has two major flaws. First, no headphone jack (wtf). Second, it hurts my hands playing it for even an hour.
Yeah, it's been given this legendary status, but really it wasn't seen as that during it's lifetime. I think that having a lit screen has really helped it become the overall best. I agree that it feels cramped. The lack of a headphone jack is baffling for a portable system with a rechargeable battery. Having to use the same port for the headphone adapter is crazy! The clamshell design is a great touch, but like you said, Nintendo had already done it decades before. I'm glad they brought it back for it though. Most GBA SP screens look great because of it.
@@NeanderMeander Agreed on all points. And aesthetically, the GBA SP is just a really cool looking device. And if your goal is to play GBA games on original hardware, that’s the way to go. …. or better yet, getting an OG GBA modded with a badass aftermarket screen. But by the time you go that route, you’re really outside of the original design concept. Almost like cheating, haha.
just noticed you don't have a video focusing specifically on the ds line. but then again you did say you weren't playing much nintendo during that time period.
I don’t. Not yet anyway. I completely skipped the DS when it was the current console. In Have gone back and played some great DS games though. I just picked up two of the Castlevania games. I can’t wait to play them.
No need to apologize. It should have been added. I didn’t thinking I was only representing North Americas lineup. After all the comments about it being left off, I’ve realized it should have been included. I made a whole video dedicated to the Game Boy Light to make up for it.

This video literally professionally done, i even thought that you had 1m subs, you earned a sub man
Thank you so much!
great video man! I really appreciate the effort on putting your thoughts on each handheld rather than reiterating product descriptions.
Thanks for watching! I do my best to give insights other than just technical specs. I really appreciate you stopping by and commenting!

Thanks for adding the GameBoy Light video. I think I remember reading about it on Wikipedia but got it confused with the GameBoy Pocket lol
Was expecting at least 1 million subs. Was shocked that you only have 1k!! Amazing video 🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼
Thank the guy who was playing with his calculator and made nintendo a future and fortune
I dont get that this channel has so few subsribers, the videos are all so high quality! great Work = )
I really appreciate this! Thanks for watching!
Here before it blows up because I know it will. Great video 👍
Just found your channel and I'm loving it, subscribed!
Thanks for stopping by! I'm glad you like the videos.
Nintendo went all out with the 3ds.
(edit) The GBA was the first system I ever played on and the first game I ever played was Mario Kart Super Circuit.
If I could buy one, I'd pick the DSi. Great video!!
That’s a good one! I like the size and design of the DSi
The GBA was my first ever handheld console experiance ever, I remember my grandmother got my sister and I GBA's for Xmas that year, I still have mine.

It’s has always been very excited to see the next steps in gaming. How will they improve on the switch and sp5. But the last few months I have been very nostalgic and been playing a lot on my gameboy and 3ds. Seeing this video only increases my nostalgia. GJ ;)

Wow, thank you! I'm happy you liked the video.
yet another amazing video from you. Really enjoyed this
I’m glad you liked it! What’s your favorite Nintendo handheld?
Exclusively in japan nintendo released a gameboy light, it was a gameboy pocket, but it was frontlit.
I love the Game Boy Light! I probably should have included it in the video. I promise I'll make a video all about it.
@@NeanderMeander oh and i guess the virtual boy also counts as a portable gaming vonsole
Thanks for the explanation! That's great information to know!

Yeah, how is that a portable console?
Your video style is great. Your knowledge is excellent. Well done.
Thank you very much! I'm glad you liked the video
When I first got my 3DS, I thought it was amazing how they made the top screen in 3D without the need of 3D glasses!
I was blown away by it! I’m still amazed that Nintendo was able to do it. I would love to see something like it again in a future console.
Wow, just wow! Hope algorithm picks this up!
Thank you so much for watching!
Dude you made a awesome video you need way more subs!!
Thanks! I'm working on it! Hopefully things will continue to grow.
Yeah, I think you're right. It's too bad because I like the feel of the DSi, but I like the Lite because of the GBA slot.
Yea it’s just that slot takes up a lot of space, plus they might have been trying to phase out the gameboy to get more people to get ds games. Or move on. But it kinda makes sense why they removed it
@@b8conbear330 No doubt Nintendo wanted to move on from GBA games which is why it was omitted.
I hope you make an updated video which includes the Switch OLED. :)
I'm working on a video right now
My first console was the Nintendo DS Lite. It was the shiny black one and along with it came Super Mario 64 DS, my first game ever. It was a present from my dad for my 5th birthday.
I have that shiny black DS Lite! It's a really nice console
@@NeanderMeander And the design looks so beautiful for such an old console. Nintendo really outdid themselves when designing the DS Lite. It looks so modern and minimal.
I still have it but it doesn't work. I just keep it for the memories but I do have a grey Switch Lite.
I love my GBA SP, what a great library of games!
Tons of great games for it!
I feel like the wii u should have had a honorable mention, it wasn't as portable as the switch but was still a hand held in its own right. :)
Yeah, it's in a grey area. I left it off because it's mainly a home console.
@@NeanderMeander Yeah i get it, just wish it got more love, it was and still is a great system and i think people are slowly starting to realise that but it will always be just that middle child between the wii and the switch. :)

8:59 Lemme explain what bits are
(Tldr: the more bits a system has, the more possible variations a byte can have.)
Alright, now for a more technical explanation.
For example:
8-bit:
00000000
16-bit:
00000000
00000000
32-bit:
00000000
00000000
00000000
00000000
64-bit:
00000000
00000000
00000000
00000000
00000000
00000000
00000000
00000000
Quite basically, bits are funky things and I like ranting about this crap on the internet to people because it makes the brain go brrrr
The Game Boy Color is a hardware revision of the original Game Boy.
I addressed this in the video. 6:40
That’s so cool! What color is your 3DS XL? That really is hard to believe you only had two games. Have you played more than those two?
I had the Gameboy advance back in the day. Made a big time mistake selling it
I have a few things I regret selling too. But who would have known how popular gaming would be now? I think we sold our old things to progress forward. As it turns out, the old stuff is just as good and maybe better than the new stuff.
I have a few handhelds I regret selling also:
GameBoy Color
GameBoy Pocket
GameBoy Advance SP AGS-101
GameBoy Micro
DS Lite
I wish I had kept these for the backwards compatibility and the backlight. If I could find even a couple of these, I would buy them and the games I had for them again.
U forgot gameboy light. Ik its online in japan but its worth metioning as it has a light
Well the new 3ds also have exclusive games that can only be played in that system and its no called a new generation of 3ds
I feel like new 3ds is actually a good name because it tells you that you have the latest model even if I doesn’t stick forever. The name makes sense to me because new means it’s the newest version.
For the time it was great! From a longevity standpoint, it's not so great. At least we got them and I'm happy about that.
Yea
You might be the only person I’ve heard that is true for them. The problem with the word “new” is when buying in the used market. New and “new” are very different things. If they had just called it “super” or “pro” or “deluxe” or any word meaning better it would have been simpler. But now, even a 100 years from now, that revision will always be called “New 3DS”. Think about that. In a century, it will still have to be referred to with the “new” moniker.
Nintendo switch what I love about it that I can play high triple AAA on the go
That is why I love it so much too!
The DS Lite is a great little handheld. I'm a huge fan of it! Having that GBA game slot made it a must own
@@NeanderMeander I realized I messed up what I said.
Interesting looking at the Game and Watch, I didn't know it's like an ancient DS...
Some of them were. Others just had a single screen. The Game and Watch handhelds are an interesting piece of gaming history.
You deserve way more subs

@@NeanderMeander it was truly a great show of all thd Nintendo handhelds. Such great memories
“Calling back to the original Game Boy Advance, which was the last Nintendo portable to feature a non-closable design”
GameBoy Micro: am I a joke to you?
You forgot the Gameboy light 😆
It's a game of that is black and white, but it has a black light!!!
Not forgotten. I chose to not put it in the video because it was a Japan exclusive. I have something in mind for it.
@@NeanderMeander ok thanks
So I don't want to bother you on the exclusion of the Game Boy Light, I can see you made up for that which is awesome, but you also excluded the Pokémon Mini & it's revision called the Nintendo Pocket Pikachu, the Virtual Boy, the Switch V2, & the Switch OLED Model (Even though that last one came out after this video had already released).
gotta admit the 3ds is the best handheld console ever

Alright, thanks for telling me, didn't think of that.
Small correction, the Switch came out early 2017 not 2016. March 3rd 2017 to be precise

That’s always bugged me too. Even when I had one as a kid, I wanted those 4 face buttons like SNES controller.
Thanks for the explanation. That’s not so hard to understand
Where's the gameboy light?
It’s tucked away in my closet. I went back and forth on if I should add it into the video. I chose not to because I think it’s such a unique console it deserves its own video to spotlight it. I guess it wouldn’t have hurt to have added it here.
Not only Game boy Advanced and Color’s screen we didn’t like... dude.. I HATED the batteries too
I didn’t mind the batteries all that much on my Game Boy systems. It was the Game Gear where it was really bad! I had a Game Boy and my brother had the Game Gear. I was really jealous of the lit color screen until we found out how many batteries it ate through.
It is amazing that so many of the old Nintendo handhelds have survived to this day. They seem to built with early Nokia quality. 😅
They are very resilient little devices. I haven't had any of mine stop working.
I absolutely love the Nintendo Gameboy micro and New Nintendo 3DS because of the swappable faceplates, the galaxy themed New Nintendo 3DS XL also looks great,
I really hope they do something like that in the future with their next system,
The switch has great games but the system and software itself feel so corporate and soulless because it has no music and themes and stuff like that,
The Switch in compared to Nintendo’s past handhelds and home consoles is exactly that, sterile, corporate, and soulless. Like you said, the games are great, but the console itself has been kind of a bore.
You forgot the Gameboy light witch had a lit screen and came before the Gameboy color.
I did forget it. But I made an entire video about it. Here's a link to it: th-cam.com/video/tZjM3dP0WQA/w-d-xo.html

Awesome! Thank you for watching them!
19:44 and dsi games bruh
imagine playing pokemon red in 1996 on a gb
Probably been said by now, but you forgot the Gameboy Light.
Yep, I missed it
I love how the GBA SP got all this credit for folding when Nintendo already did that with the Game & Watch.
Bits are how many numbers it can calculate

No need to apologize. It should have been added. I didn’t thinking I was only representing North Americas lineup. After all the comments about it being left off, I’ve realized it should have been included. I made a whole video dedicated to the Game Boy Light to make up for it.
