3DS Console Differences | Neander Meander

  • The 3DS might be the most confusing family of consoles Nintendo has ever made. The DS was confusing, but the 3DS takes it to a whole other level. I break down what's different on each system.
Correction: A few people have pointed out that I messed on one section. The New 2DS XL does have those two cameras. They were moved to the bottom. Thanks for catching that!

I made a pretty big error in this video. I said that the outer two cameras that are found on the back of the top screens of all the other 3DS models and the back of the 2DS were removed from the New 2DS XL. That is completely wrong. They were moved to the bottom of the console. I never thought to look there for them. I hope this doesn't take too much away from the video and you can still find it to be watchable. Thank you to everyone who has pointed this out to me. I probably would have lived my whole life thinking Nintendo got rid of them.

There's a key component that's made the 2DS and 2DS XL a no go for me all these years: the shoulder buttons. The rest of the 3DS line have them as modular components, making them super easy to replace. 2DS and 2DS XL have them soldered onto the motherboard. Shoulder buttons are a common point of failure across Nintendo's entire portable line so having them be a separate part of the motherboard and easily replaceable is a huge plus for me.

@@trashtrash2169 as a owner of 4 of these consoles, the original 2DS is awful, but the the new 2DS has by far the smoothest gameplay, crispiest looking screen, most comfortable hand position requirements, as well as the most stable buttons, if you have a game that does not 100% rely on 3D, the New Nintendo 2DS XL is the way to go

@@masonmoore6924 Those first two things are actually impossible, but go off I guess. The third is entirely dependant on the user's hands, and you have almost certainly not actually tested the last. Something like that can change system to system. I doubt you looked at the internal design to actually confirm whether any real change was made that could make that true. Note that the New 2DS is the newest one and is likely to have way less wear.

    • @spampharos
      @spampharos 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@masonmoore6924 This is definitely not true. I used to own a New 2DS XL which I replaced with a New 3DS XL and can confirm firsthand that the gameplay is not smoother or crispier in any form. It actually looks worse due to being TN Panels no matter what on N2DSXL. The New 3DS XL that I currently have has IPS Panels and look a significant amount better.

Big tip for those who might not know is you can force native res for DS, DSiWare and handheld VC games by holding start on game boot. Game Gear VC titles include the option on the emulator settings. This info is especially vital for the XL line where these games can look blurry otherwise.

since 2015 I got the first model of the 3DS I liked it a lot but the lack of power in the processor was noticeable, Even so, I liked the 3D effect, in 2020 before the pandemic I acquired a NEW2DSXL, it became my favorite console since the games look very beautiful if the lack of 3D affects several games like the 3D Classics series, but enjoy the Virtual Console, 2D/Pixel games as well as some 3D, makes it a unique experience.

I assume the premium build stuff like the metal accent is why Nintendo priced the 3DS quite high (at its time) during its initial launch, and likely why they didn't keep the premium build to the rest of the 3DS iterations to lessen the sunken cost after the whole 3DS price cut thing.

I absolutely love my New 2DS XL, it just feels like the console was designed better. My 3DS XL and 2DS just feel "cheap" side by side. I don't have a New 3DS XL so maybe that has that same premium feel as the New 2DS XL. One thing that I now can't unsee is how the orientation is flipped on the New 3DS and New 3DS XL (one is right side up and one is upside down - usually they will choose one and stick to it forever). Also, fun fact: You can trick the OG 3DS to wake up with its lid closed, even if it's in sleep mode, via a DSLite and placing them on top of each other. This is because there are magnets near the abxy buttons, and the magnets are meant to tell the device to either sleep, or when the magnets are not touching to wake up.

Is 3DS your favorite console? Been noticing how much of your content revolves around your contagious passion for the 3DS line. As for me I love my Vita 2000 for tech specs, button layout/comfort, weight, screen size, battery life..... but I keep coming back to 3DS/DS/switch/wii/wii U for those sweet Nintendo IP's you can't get anywhere else.
New 3DS XL and DSi XL get more use than my switch lately cause they fit in the water bottle holder of my backpack (both of them at once if I really want to). Makes for low effort pick up and play sessions as my backpack goes with me everywhere. Also worth noting I almost always have my switch AND one of my DS's with me, so the option is always there.
As always keep up the good work. you're one of few channels that gets me typing out a multi-paragraph comment in word and even proofreading it before posting (don't look too hard for errors though). I don't have many people I can geek out with for these things. My parent's largely see gaming as a waste of time. My siblings and majority of my friends enjoy them but aren't into them. The friends that are don't really get hyped about old Nintendo handhelds haha
Not intended as a woe is me comment as it's not a setback in my life, but it is really refreshing to talk with likeminded people.
TL:DR Love my DS's, wish VITA had more/different games, Awesome vids, thx for responding to all our comments with such care and interest.

The 3DS is my favorite handheld console for sure. I've put in more playtime hours on my 3DS consoles than any other console ever. I fly quite often for work, which gives me a ton of down time in the air and waiting in airports. Instead of looking at spreadsheets, I play games. The 3DS rekindled my interest in gaming, so that's why I've made so many videos about it. My overall favorite might be the SNES just based on nostalgia. The Wii U is also up there for me. Nobody makes a better game than Nintendo. I think that's why I've come back to them so many times. I used to really be in to the Xbox, which I still am, but it's not the same as Nintendo's IPs.
The Vita is a really cool handheld that I should make videos about. I have both versions, but I haven't play much on them. I also really like the PSP, but again, I don't have much experience with it. I think if I decided to make a video about them now, it wouldn't be genuine.
It's funny you brought up having your Switch and one of you DS's with you because I do the same thing. I'll take a Switch and one of my 3DS's with me to cover my bases. You never know what kind of game you want to play in that moment. It's pretty great having these options in today's world.
I really appreciate you coming back and leaving such great comments. I apologize for it taking me so long to reply back. I try to give my full attention to everybody who spends their time watching the videos I make. If they comment, that even more time they are giving to me. I want to make sure they feel that their time wasn't wasted on someone who doesn't appreciate them. I really don't have many people who are into gaming either. I have a brother who dabbles a little here and there. What I've found out is there are plenty of people who share our same interests. They might not be in our families or live next door, but they are out there.
Thank you again for always coming back to watch my videos.

I still have my day-1 original 3DS. The glossy finish is really cool, but is also absolutely a fingerprint magnet. I seem to be in the minority of people who prefer the smaller model for being easier to fit in my pocket. I tend to see portability as more important for my portable devices than screen size. Regarding the 3D, honestly, it's neat for a little bit, but ultimately doesn't really change things that much. I will however add that the 3DS is still my favourite form of 3D, even if it's lower quality than the movie theatre when it comes to 3D, and the reason is entirely because of the glasses. While glasses would be a very minor thing to complain about, I already wear glasses and it is _very_ uncomfortable having to wear two different pairs at the same time.

Won't be surprised if there's gonna be the rumored Switch Pro or even Switch Lite OLED/Pro at some point, like what they did with the New 3DS and 2DS in order to extend its lifespan.

While I now currently own a Galaxy N3DSXL and love it, especially the 3D, I still have a soft spot for the 2DS. It was the one I owned because I didn't care much for 3D at the time due to how hard it was to get the effect to work properly.
I got it Christmas 2013, a black and blue model with a red case, and I loved it. It was comfortable, cheaper then a regular 3DS so it was easy for me to get it that Christmas in comparison, and I really enjoyed having it. Played Pokemon X, Zelda ALBW, and TONS of Fire Emblem Awakening. Even Bravely Default, which I should really take the time to replay sometime. I even have a memory of accidentally cracking the screen by sitting on it late at night without realizing it. That was fun lol.
Memories of Streetpassing my siblings constantly and playing Find Mii, or going to a convention and getting LOADS of Streetpasses. Tomodachi Life, MH3U, so many fun games. I eventually goodwilled it because my mom wanted me to let go of systems I wasn't playing, and I took off the serial number when I had it so I couldn't trade it in. I'm still kinda wanting another one, just for nostalgic value.
As much as I love the N3DSXL, I hold no nostalgia for it sadly, so a lot of games I loved playing on my 2DS just aren't as fun on it.

It's important to note is that almost all changes done to the New 2DS XL from the New 3DS XL were cost cutting measures. Obviously removing the 3D is the most logical step, but moving the speaker, volume slider and all three cameras (which were incorrectly stated to be removed altogether) to the bottom half meant that the top half only houses the screen, simplifying it in production (the inner camera also didn't need to track your face anymore, so moving it into the bottom part of the hinge allowed the console to be reduced in size). The matte finish is also a lot cheaper to produce, since it has virtually no post-processing needed whereas the glossy finish of the New 3DS XL came from multiple layers of paint and finishes (which is also why the New 3DS XL's beautiful finish unfortunately flaked off for a lot of people over time).
And as another comment stated, internally there have been even more cost cutting measures; while earlier 3DS models, especially the New 3DS models, have been relatively modular with its internals, the New 2DS XL practically was not, having a lot of the components soldered onto a single board, and even removing the battery, which was really easy in every other model, was less convenient. The New 2DS XL is in general notorious for being awful to repair, even among the 3DS' which, with their hinges are already annoying to repair, despite almost all of the components being moved to the lower half.
A lot of the changes did make sense in my opinion, especially moving the camera to the hinge and the home button to the left of the screen really helped reduce the footprint of the New 2DS XL and the flap in front of the SD card slot and the cartridge slot were just very nice quality of life features. But seeing as the New 2DS XL is a nightmare for repairability, and it not even really being that much cheaper than the New 3DS XL on websites like ebay, I'd just get a New 3DS XL if I wanted to use either as my main console.
One final thing I'd like to note is that the placement of the microSD card slots on the New 3DS and New 3DS XL was probably deliberately done so that children wouldn't be able to easily take the SD card out while the console was still on, so while annoying for us as adults and teenagers who like to tinker with our 3DS, the change made sense from a designer's standpoint. It's weird that this wasn't done on the original 2DS, to be honest.

I remember playing ocarina of time in 3D and it was mind blowing. only issue was it gave me bad eye strain lol I can only find an OG 3ds in my price range and I’m getting it tomorrow. I hate how the screens are def small but knowing it has the same 3D effect as the original XL makes me happy. Mainly want it for the Pokémon games and occasional 3ds game for long rides in the car on vacation lol.

I always thought IPS was XL only. Speaking as a TN n3ds owner. 💀 Well it wouldn't be such an issue if they used good TN panels and not the worst ones they could find. DSi from 2009 has better screens than a n3ds from 2015/16.

I bought the 3DS at launch and was fine with it. Then Nintendo announced the XL model. I wasn't against it, but I was skeptical to drop money just to have a bigger screen and better battery life. Then I played Resident Evil Revelations at the Nintendo World Store (now Nintendo New York) on a 3DS XL that an employee had for demonstration purposes and I was sold, albeit, I didn't get the XL model at launch but bought it during a sale on either Walmart or Amazon a few months after release. The buttons also felt good to press on the XL. I passed on the 2DS and new 3DS models but bought a new 2DS XL during a sale on Walmart and I absolutely love it and is my primary 3DS family system. My only gripe is that I do wish it had/came packed with a telescopic stylus with a slot to fit it in. I know a lot of folks preferred the solid stylus but I liked and preferred the telescopic one. Anywho good video. Thank you for posting.

I would really like to see a video comparing the pixel densities between the N3DS and N3DSXL. There are a lot of people that say it’s super important. Would be indeed an interesting video, but maybe it answers your question nonetheless - it only makes a difference if you hold both consoles exactly the same distance from you, and even then only if you have the other one to compare.
Usually you hold the XL one further away from you than the regular sized one (since its form-factor is ideal for people with bigger hands and therefore longer arms)

I also like the 3D mode. It's interesting to consider how nicely that functionality is integrated, too: generally, game play works fine in both 3D and 2D modes, and the user can toggle freely between them at any time (with the 3D-capable consoles) without consequence.

number 4 out of 5 here, guess there is one more out there. I can see why people find it uncomfortable and not worth it on old models, but for me that is what sets 3DS apart from everything else. The most unique experience on a handheld, except maybe rear touchscreen on the vita... but not many enjoyed that.

Man I wish Nintendo would go back to making handheld systems. I know its somewhat nostalgia but also now that I have money to get what I want and they are so convenient and collectible. All the cool variants from gameboy all the way to 3DS and it feels like that has been lost with the switch. They drop switched with subtle pokemon accents or animal crossing accents, but nothing like the handhelds.
    All in all, phenomenal video!

Thanks for watching. I agree with you, Nintendo has not given the Switch console the same charm they've given to their past handheld systems. I don't know what's going on with them this generation. You would think they would be making special editions for every new game coming out. Hopefully we'll see more in the future.

  • @baddabaddabaddaswing
    @baddabaddabaddaswing ปีที่แล้ว

There's a few reasons why the 2DS XL isn't the best revision:
    1) The speakers were moved from the screen to the bottom edge, and far worse for it. While we do get stereo (unlike 2DS), the sound is muffled by your hands.
    2) In order to save costs, the top cover of the 2DSXL has no metal re-enforced to protect the screen. While some may have complained about the 3DS being top heavy, this makes the 2DSXL top screen very prone to damage even when closed, many screens get broken from the console bending or if something heavy hit the 2DS when closed.
    3) While I agree having the SD card hidden away in the n3DS/XL models was a strange move, the 2DSXL is only slightly better because that rubber cover is incredibly cheap and very prone to not staying in place, much less snapping right off. Should have been a hinged door.
Also you mentioned the 2 cameras were removed for the 2DSXL. They were not, they were moved to the back of the console, so it could still work with AR games (even if there's no stereoscopic effect).
It's a shame Nintendo couldn't launch with the n3DS model right from the start. The better stereoscopic tech, QoL improvements and slight power boost along with the swappable faceplates would have been a massive hit and might have brought more enthusiasm to playing in "3D", as well as allowing 3rd party companies to make faceplates would have made that much more successful.
I'm also one of those weirdos who found the 2DS to be the most comfortable to hold (it does take some getting used to how strange it is), especially those giant chunky shoulder buttons. It's a shame they didn't take the route of making a n2DS out of the design of the 2DS (there's plenty of room to fit another speaker, rework the shoulder buttons for 2 more and the c stick). If they had gone down that route, it would have been my perfect 3DS console.
