you missed something very important about why Nintendo DS and DSi were such a success. In poor countries or countries where we couldn't buy or afford buying game cartridges, sellers were offering homebrew cartridges with SD cards where you can download and play roms. this made the sales explode in countries where nintendo traditionally has no presence

I bought a DS for my dad for his birthday, my mom said she wanted one for Christmas the same year. They were smokers at the time and you could always find them sitting on their porch each playing their DS. They were both in their late fifties. They started with rain teasers and bundle games with sudoku and puzzles and moved on to Mario Kart and Zelda. My mom has replayed Ocarina of Time several times😂

This is a really good collection, but before the Game Boy Color there was also the Game Boy Pocket. This was a slimmed down version of the first Game Boy that required fewer batteries. There was also the Game Boy Light, which is essentially the Game Boy Pocket that had a backlit display and only released in Japan. Game Boy Micro was an interesting release and you can consider it the Game Boy Advance slim.

Also the whole exchangeable games for one console stuff was already desinged by Milton Bradleys Microvision in 1980 or so. I really missed the Game Boy light in this development since having a lit up screen is now such a common thing.

Also there are two GBA sp's. The first version, the ags 001, had a frontlit screen while the revision, the 101, had a proper backlit screen. In the video, he said that the sp was now backlit but showed the 001, which has washed out colors due to the frontlight. Would have been nice to show how beautiful the 101 screen is :))

Same. StreetPass/Spotpass and Hatena were amazing. When in Japan, everyone and their grandmother had a 3DS. When in Texas, finding characters to help beat the adventure games was especially difficult when you have to bump into players. If you were in Tokyo between 2010-2015, you could get tons of StreetPass characters in less than 5 minutes being on the train. I had to take a charger with me.

The DS, and specifically the DS Lite and DSi, was basically my whole childhood as a kid born in 2003. I have so many memories of a thing called Summer School that my local nursery did where kids up to the age of 9 could go there during the day in summer and basically do nothing. There was like me and 2 or 3 other people who consistently brought our DSs and played Mario Kart against each other for hours. I even still sometimes play my DSi XL which was the last DS console I owned just because I love the nostalgia of playing the same games I spent so much of my childhood playing. It's kind of a shame current kids and the next gen of kids aren't gonna have an experience like that. Thanks for the throwback mate!

It’s interesting how Arun has managed to bring that highly excited, fast paced style that so often gets associated with TH-camrs with younger audiences but maintains not only a maturity but a distinct kind of calm that seems to keep his videos from being overwhelming despite all the graphics and movement in the edit. I really don’t understand how it works but I know it’s the reason this is the only tech channel I really seek out or rewatch videos from. Like, it doesn’t get boring or out of my scope despite me being largely uninitiated but it also doesn’t make me feel like I’m being talked down to or like I’m interacted with like a child

Just as an aside, the GBA SP had two different models.
The AGS-001, which had a front-lit display, and the AGS-101, with a backlit one. Most people remember the latter, but I have the former. If you pressed the button with the sun on it, it essentially turned the screen into the original GBA’s. 🙂

Not entirely true: the most common and most sold one is the 001, with a front-lit screen. The AGS-101 (backlit, much nicer screen) sold in smaller numbers and went on sale when the DS was already on the market. AGS-101's are much more expensive on the second hand market, because they are much harder to find. The difference is HUGE though and I think it's worth it. The SP in this video is a front-lit AGS-001, so small 'mistake' there. :)

What's incredible to me is how I often would end up getting a new handheld system roughly every time I got a new Pokemon game.
First the Gameboy with Pokemon Red, then the Gameboy Color with Pokemon Silver. My cousins got the GBA and then a year later got the SP so I got their old GBA and grabbed Pokemon Sapphire and Pokemon Firered. Then I got my DS Lite and with that came Pokemon Pearl, Pokemon SoulSilver and Pokemon White. My DS Lite was my go to for years and only briefly did I get a New 3DS XL (for Pokemon X of course) before finally getting the Switch for Sword and Shield, Scarlet and Violet and Arceus.
The evolution of Nintendo handhelds was in many ways assisted by the Pokemon franchise.

Hey Arun, i noticed you didn't cover the Gameboy Micro during the transition from the Gameboy SP to the DS. I remember when i was in Junior High i had the sp growing up along with a few friends in band class and other classes, that i eventually got the Micro and it was a gamechanger from how small it was to put in my pocket with it's microfiber case and wasn't a bulge in my pocket or digging into my thigh. The screen was also a lot brighter and felt a lot crisper. That and i think it had a longer play time. I reviewed specs and it says it was worse than the SP but i couldnt see much of a difference. Would be a cool idea if you did a review on it lol. But this and the Sony Handheld videos were great and love the quality of the vids, that i started a rabbit hole into your channel, as I'm also a big game/console collector as well.

I am a child of the very early 80s, and that original gameboy was my first handheld device. This video brought back so many memories as I haven't seen that thing in decades. Arun, my brothers and I were big into gaming, and there were some high end, expensive systems that were released in Japan around the same time that were significantly better than what we had in the U.S. My family bought them at a specialty gaming store in the late 80s or early 90s. One was Turbo Graphics 16 (or something like that). It had these really small cards that acted as the games, and this was when we had those large Nintendo and Sega Genesis cartridges (though the Sega's were a bit smaller as far as I remember. The graphics on that Turbo Graphics 16 was revolutionary. Also, the best handheld of all time was released around the same time, the Turbo Express, which was about the size of a gameboy but played the full fat turbo graphics 16 games. And it was color! It was amazing. Lastly, and the best system IMO ever released for its era, was the Neo Geo. It had these massive cartridges, but the graphics were like nothing that would be seen for years after. It felt like you were playing arcade games in your home, which was amazing at the time. Not sure if these things will ever make their way into a video, but trust me as someone who grew up at that time, they really changed the entire landscape of home gaming.

Awesome video! And thanks for the dedication! One thing to add, you forgot the New 2DS console.

Great video. I think you missed a couple. Like the Gameboy Pocket, the GBA Micro, and the New 2DS XL. They each had their own reasons for being notable but I can also understand why they might be easy to overlook. But beyond that it was a great video on the history and timeline of the big N's handhelds. Got my sub for it. Imma go watch your backlog as well. Keep it up.

@@iscreamcake I'm hoping he does a video for every Sega console ever. And I'd ask for one on every Sega handheld or playstation handheld but they only had like 2 a piece. Either way I like this guy's gaming content. Definitely made me wanna step up my handheld collection that's for sure.
