    I still remember getting my metallic pink DS Lite when I was in first grade, I was obsessed with that thing. I have a lot of memories of playing Littlest Pet Shops Jungle and Zoo Tycoon 2 with my best friend at the time, who lived in the same apartment complex as me. I remember us "texting" each other with pictochat too, even though we'd often be right next to each other, just because we could. Eventually, my DS Lite was replaced with a blue 3DS for Christmas one year, which was eventually replaced with a blue 3DS XL like a year later, but I have fond memories. I don't have my OG DS or my OG 3DS anymore since my parents had to sell them to afford the upgrades, but I still have my 3DS XL from 2012 and I still play it on a regular basis. I also have a pokeball 2DS XL now, which I love and is probably my favorite DS, and I recently bought a limited edition Nintendogs DS Lite since it looked so similar to my OG DS and Nintendogs + Cats is an extremely nostalgic game for me that I still play from time to time. I just love the DS line, made my childhood.

    I had two 3DS, a red one (my very first 3DS, I got it as a late Christmas gift in 2012 with a Super Mario 3D Land cartridge) and a black one (bought it in 2014 after my red 3DS broke) I played the sh*t out of my black 3DS for years lmao Then in 2019 the L & R buttons broke and I stopped playing with it because most of my games required those buttons (Super Mario 3D Land, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Mario Kart DS, etc) and last week, I remembered I still had my red 3DS and since the buttons on that one were pretty much brand new, I replaced my worn-out black 3DS L & R buttons and now I'm playing with it again and it's still going strong. I love the 3DS series.
    Edit: My black 3DS finally died last year. It overheated and turned off and it didn't turn on again. I still haven't been able to get rid of it because of the memories, although a friend gifted me his New 3DS XL because he has a Switch and he basically had the 3DS gathering up dust. I personally believe that the N2dsXl is the best DS model. It can play both 3DS and DS games without problem. Plus with cfw, you can even play all handheld consoles including the GBA. The design and price is perfectly balanced (except the speakers, it should have been in the top screen) making it the console for people who like the N3ds feature while not wanting the 3d effect or wanting a a DS for a good price. Overall good video and you deserve more subs.

    • @gokudomatic
      @gokudomatic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. The new 2ds xl is like what remains when you remove everything unnecessary from the 3ds and keep only the most practical things. It's lighter in the hands, and it's a bit smaller than the new 3ds xl while keeping the same screen sizes, which makes it compact enough for your pocket.

  • @DarkBowser64
    @DarkBowser64 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Excellent video detailing the history of them all. I was there through it all and I think every single model has something going for it. Except maybe the original 3DS XL. The only reason to pick that over the original 3DS was a longer battery life. The speaker volume was terrible because they couldn't fit higher quality ones due to the screen being so large. But with the New 3DS XL existing, there's really no point in it. I got my original DS in Christmas 2005, and I really loved those clicky buttons and the D-Pad. I played almost too much Mario Kart DS on that thing.
    The DSi XL also has one more difference compared to the original DSi: Nintendo used IPS screens exclusively for that model. Those screens have amazing colors, slightly better than the DSi, and incredible viewing angles compared to the TN displays of the DS consoles that came before it. This was apparently because they wanted people to be able to sort of crowd around someone playing and be able to see the game. The original DSi didn't have guaranteed IPS screens, so it washed out at angles, but I believe the colors were still more vibrant by a bit compared to the DS Lite just by virtue of screen technology evolving. Some 3DS consoles have IPS screens too, but usually not both screens because Nintendo didn't differentiate between them when building the consoles in the factory. This has led to the "3DS screen lottery", so to speak.
    The only other thing I have to say is that the original DS was not frontlit. It was backlit just like the AGS-101 and DS Lite. The reason it was super super washed out just because they spent so much to make sure everyone got the best of both worlds, but ended up satisfying nobody all that especially well in the long run. There's a certain video that actually tears down an original DS display just to show that the light is coming from the back and not the front. Basically you can tell it's backlit because when the light is on, you don't see a strong "haze" of light around the front of the screen like the AGS-001.
    The problem is the DS's screens were transflective, allowing anyone to see it outdoors because it could reflect light from the front almost like an earlier non-lit GBA or the AGS-001 with the frontlight off, but it also allowed light to pass through from the back so that you could see it indoors and in the dark with the backlight on. This is why when the system is off, the screen is more of a dark gray instead of pure black. But the cost this came at was the color saturation, black and white levels, and viewing angles. Those kinds of displays were not mature yet, and even today, are uncommon. On the flip side, it's the only model of DS you can see in bright sunlight, so this does give it a special quality that nothing else has in the DS line.
    When Nintendo launched the AGS-101 and Micro the following year, they made the screen transmissive instead (does not accept light from the front, only the back) so that it could look more beautiful and the colors and black levels wouldn't be washed out. From then on they used that kind of screen.
    Sorry for this giant wall of text. I have a large love for Nintendo systems and just wanted to share the information I've learned from all my research. I hope this teaches any reader about something they didn't know about before.

  • @LadyJen13
    @LadyJen13 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Personally; I prefer the premium feel of the Nintendo 3DS over all the others. I just wish that there could have been a "New" Nintendo 3DS with that premium-looking finish. I was sad when I had to upgrade to the newer model; and even a little ticked when I found that only the XL model was available in the US apart from the one regular-sized model that was bundled with Animal Crossing New Leaf with a matching tacky casing on it.

    • @NeanderMeander
      @NeanderMeander  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That original model had such a great feel! I know there were many people who complained about how glossy it was. I think that could have been a reason why all the other 3DS models were made with matte finishes. I agree with you, it would have been nice to have a "New" model that had the same aesthetic of the original. The New 3DS XL was pretty glossy, but it didn't feel like the original.

  • @Bradley_Lute

    Nintendo has a weird habit of making their consoles seem like they are the same but a minor upgrade. The Gameboy and the Gameboy Colour. The Wii and the Wii U. The DS and the 3DS. Not to mention that all three also looked a lot like there older counterparts. The Switch breaks that trend and it is great for that. It is the sexiest console they have put out since the Game Cube and N64 glory days.

A 3DS costs about 200-300 dollars so with enough saving up you can go to a game store to buy one! When I got my 3DS I bought it on the day after christmas at a store called EB Games. I paid almost $100 for a standard size 3ds, but it didn't disappoint. I did need a new battery but when I changed it I noticed how sturdy of a built device it is. Wow, you had even more than me. I had everyone but the dsi, the 2 ds models and the little new 3ds.

    I got a 2DS in early 2015 (first got a 2ds in 2013 but it broke, so the 2015 one was a replacement) & in 2021 it's still going strong! Love this thing
    EDIT: Also can I say this video is REALLY well put together! The editing is smoother than butter. Fastest 12 minutes in my life

      I’m glad you liked the video! The 2DS is a solid, durable little gaming powerhouse. Both of mine are still going strong!

      How the hell did you break a 2ds- or was it already used by someone else?

      @@lederp7151 The charging port broke somehow (idk how it happened lmfao) and it wouldn't charge anymore, so when the battery ran out that was it lol

    As an everyday user of an original 3ds XL for about half a decade, taking it on road trips and to outdoor events, I disagree that the bottom screen didn't leave marks on the top screen. Great video regardless, love the camera work.

      I can see that being the case. I used mine for a few years before the "New" systems came out. I didn't develop lines on mine during that time.

      @@NeanderMeander I also wasn't exactly delicate with it as a kid, which probably didn't help lol. I just remember playing an original DS Game one day and wondering why I had vertical lines that perfectly outlined the 4:3 Gameplay, only to slowly close the hinge and realize.

    Also, how did you get so many DS's? I wish that I had more.
    I hope you have a nice day :)

      Thank you so much! I bought the DS's over the years locally second hand. I was an early adopter to the 3DS and bought them as they were released. I'm still buying 3ds's when I see them decently priced.
