Really love that y'all take the time to educate the listener. One reason I started watching true crime is bc it feels safer to know what's out there and what someone should or shouldn't do in terrible situations. I bet I'm not the only one. Actually, all you need is just common sense, in the first case the look on the killer face is already a red flag, that is very obviously a mentally ill person, the other stuff were huge red flags yet the girl kept going

That is one evil woman, framing Betsy's husband for murder. And making the children have to live w/o mom or dad. It's one thing to kill someone and not get caught. But when you are not only willing to kill and then put their spouse in prison for your evil act, that puts it on a whole new level.
that bs is legit terrifying, that so many ppl are sent to prison or even executed and later proven not guilty. How many just can't prove it and will waste away in prison for life, becoming traumatized and hardened, bc the Innocence Project has to focus more urgently on death sentences 😶

Pam was SO suspicious, honestly. Because SHE was the last person to see Betsy alive, not the husband. To accuse someone of ‘faking’ a breakdown after find their bloody and mutilated spouse… I hope that prosecutor feels some guilt.
And she inserted herself into Betsy's plans. Someone else was supposed to take her home. That was the first red flag out of many.

Poor Russ. He stuck beside her through sickness and in health, only to be blamed for her untimely death. I teared up during that 911 call. I am sure with a terminal illness you start to come to terms with death, but never would he have imagined it would end like that 😢

I know, right?! I've had to call 911 in a real emergency and it's SO hard to control your emotions. You can tell it's 100% real, and for them to say it's dramatic and over-the-top is bogus!!! I'd be furious at that... I hope he has more patience and ability to forgive than I do, and is now living in peace and freedom, and remembering the good times he had with his beloved wife🙏❤️
The case about Lindsey makes me want to point out something I feel is important.
A lot of times young people are raised to be polite to strangers in public places and to not make a scene.
I think it's very important to also teach them that it's ok to tell someone firmly NO. And that it's ok to cause a scene if that person won't take NO for an answer. That is what I wish Lindsey had done in that public place.
Folks please remember that being "impolite" could save your life.

Yes. This reminds me of the book called The Gift of Fear written by Gavin de Becker. He talks about how women typically are socialized to think we have to continue being nice to people even after we feel uncomfortable or feel that something is off about a person or situation. He says it's our natural instincts as animals to want to protect ourselves which is why our body will physically manifest our fears in ways like "hair on the back of your neck standing up" but women especially are often socialized to not want to hurt someone else's feelings so we go along with things we know we shouldn't.
I agree. We’re taught to be polite but it’s dangerous. I literally NEVER open the door when I’m home alone. Maybe it’s rude because they can see my lights are on and my car is in the driveway but I don’t give a shit. My safety is more important than being nice.

I was always a "polite little thing" & believed there was good in everyone...BOY, WAS I WRONG! They'll use and exploit you, and some of them will even cut your throats.
Them saying that Russ’s reaction was “Over the top” made my blood boil. Just the sheer thought of my loved ones being taken from me early can bring me to tears. I can only imagine what I’d feel actually going through something like that. I truly do hope for the best for anyone who has gone through anything like this. Stay safe y’all.
I’ve been waiting for someone to cover the Lindsay Hawker case. I worked for the same company as her in Japan and I actually moved out of the company apartment she moved into when she first arrived. We had many of the same coworkers. All the English teachers around the area were terrified because everyone told us Japan was “so safe.” NOWHERE IS SAFE. Especially not a place where you let your guard down because so many people tell you how safe it is. If there is something to be learned it is this: Always be vigilant. Do not trust strangers. Trust your gut. Don’t travel alone.
Someone already did months ago. It was Coffeehouse crime I believe.

for the last case, it really upset me to hear that they thought the husband's reaction to finding his wife dead on the floor an "over reaction"... really? that is the stupidest and vile thing for them to say. I had tears running down my face when i heard his 911 call, i knew it was genuine
If you listen to enough true crime stories, you will hear all the very similarly sounding cases where a husband stumbles upon their wife and seemingly appears distraught. But the reality is they were the ones who did it. Unfortunately, it’s an all too common scenario with husbands who murder their wives and it almost always never works.
So while I don’t blame them for thinking it was another one of those cases, they really should have investigated more before coming to that conclusion. Bad police work all around.

I completely blame them for looking at the husband, obviously in the end we know he didn't do it. So they wrongly convicted an innocent man.

@susan ivy the whole call he sounded sincerely upset. I think if you're an extremely empathic person you'd be able to pick up on that. I know that you can't judge someone on emotions alone, bc everyone handles situations differently. Idk what kind of experiences in life you've had, but for me, personally have unfortunately had some major trauma resulting in ptsd, anxiety, depression, the shakes, etc etc.. I speak on this only as someone who had the terrible unfortunate tragedies happen. I can just pick up on authenticity.
But all that said, yes for sure there are crazies out there that put on acts, etc.. and obviously they were completely wrong putting this man away. I'm glad he's found innocent and out.

It's unimaginable! For me, it's not unimaginable, bc i lived it. I have experienced first hand, the most gut wrenching experiences i wouldnt wish upon my worst enemy..Know one would truly know how it feels. I went completely insane and blacked out while flipping out having a complete mental breakdown. Idk how to describe it, it was a strange mixture of deep denial, pain, mental pain, anguish, despair, and anger! Very overwhelming.
As I was trying to flip my fiancé s body around while on 911 I was screaming through the phone bc I could not physically do it. My body was sore for at least a week after that. I'm tearing up reliving this nightmare. This happened January 2021. I didn't care if I died, in fact, I welcomed death to get me in my sleep. I no longer am feeling that way. Healing takes time. I missed my therapy session today so if you're still reading this I am both thankful you took the time, and I'm also sorry for taking your time going on about this. Also I'm not sure if I'm making any sense. I hope everyone is safe out there, don't do drugs, literally everything is laced with Fentanyl. Drugs will claim the rest of your life and the ppl you love. And guard your heart, but at the same time have an open loving heart. Life can be pretty unbearable at times. I kind of went off topic but anyway.. I thank God for everyday, bc everyday would be literally impossible if it weren't for Him. Be kind to others and help others if you are able too! Good night and God bless you all ❤
@susan ivySee this is the sad thing about men in modern society. We are expected to act like emotionless robots, but the second we cry or show emotion it's considered "over the top and fake". I'm just curious how emotional we are "supposed" to be finding are loved one dead in front of us, Susan?
@susan ivy Im glad ole Susie here isnt the one in charge of judging these calls, we've all seen plenty of these, when I first heard it I thought it had to be the husband but was surprised at how sincere the call sounded, I felt real pain in his voice, and then I checked myself...You, like many, just think you know far more than you know...
The last case about Pam drives me crazy. How she was given so much credence in the first trial is unbelievable. Pam financially benefited like crazy. That call to 911 was absurd....what a nasty, nasty person.

the prosecutor and lead detective went after the husband completely ignoring other evidence because Pam was very convincing. It's sickening they took her word of abuse when there was NO evidence.
You left out an important part of Lindsay's case: Tatsuya Ichihashi didn't just show up at her door - he followed her home from the bar, on foot! He approached her outside of the bar, and when she tried to shrug him off and leave by bike, he ran after her the whole way to her apartment where she reluctantly let him inside for a glass of water to make sure someone else saw his face too in case he was a creeper.. she tried to do everything right to secure her safety. There's just no winning when you're up against a predator like him. I hope sweet Lindsay is resting easy and has seen the world she so wanted to travel, from up above. 🕊 ❤️ 🌏

I remember this when it happened here in Japan... when he was caught the news reporter contacted her parents before the police😩 I remember watching it live... surreal af
I’m certainly no predator, as most men aren’t. But if I try to put myself in the mindset of the predator from this case, my advice to women in this type of situation would be to draw as much attention to yourself and the man following you as fast as you could. Do something incredibly erratic in a very public space, this would make it nearly impossible for a man to continue perusing you, and they would be very likely to just want to flee the scene before they’re caught up in the situation and it’s revealed that they’d been stalking you.
@@charlesbrown4483 excellent points. Another recommended course of action is to beeline to the nearest police station (or a place of business) if someone is following you, as revealing where your live will likely lead to further danger. 😔
@@RiniKitty13 I saw that too...live on the news. So bizarre. The dad was like "Uhh...thanks?" I never met Lindsay but I had friends that knew her. I never thought they'd find the guy but I was glad to see them catch the motherfucker, even though it took a few years. RIP Lindsay.
I'm really loving the red flags you talk about at the end of each story. It really helps people learn to recognize these things as dangerous instead of romanticize/infatuate about these things in people.
As a woman who has dealt with my fair share of weirdos(we all have), trust your gut. If you feel uncomfortable in their presence, listen to that. You do not owe anyone anything, you are not obligated to "be nice."

Pam was super suspicious, it's disgusting to me how roomfulls of people can just go with the husband because "It's always the husband" and there wasnt at least 1 to say "ehhh folks, anybody take a look at the lady? The one that suddenly has beneficiary and last one to see her and clear motives?"
Pam was good, a real sociopath. Explained the life insurance in a way to dispel most people's suspicion of her, and place it on the husband.
With all the thought out deaths surrounding her, I'm glad she is behind bars...she is very dangerous.

In the last case I just knew the Husband didn't do it. In the 911 Call he sounded so real, a combination of shock, desperation and sadness.

Tatsuya actually followed Lindsay at first and when she noticed he introduced himself as a student of hers. She didn't believe him but when he offered her a lot of money for private lessons she accepted even though she was not comfortable around him. When you have a bad feeling about somebody, please just trust your gut. It's not worth the money or anything else they are offering.

How the prosecutor was even allowed to say that I'll never know. That's not a fact of evidence, it's an opinion on somebody's reaction to an alleged murder, a psychologist or somebody should have been the one to comment that if that's how they felt. But even then I think it'd be absurd and unbecoming. Which I suspect is what the state psychologist told the prosecutor before he took it upon himself.
I love how you give tips and advice after each story and it really does make you think twice about who you can trust!
i cannot believe that ppl said that russell’s reaction was “over the top.” if you saw your dead wife in that gruesome state, i think everyone would react like that. he was in shock and then it seemed to hit him all at once. idk it is just sad that that was used as “evidence”. that’s so traumatic
About Pam's mother's death. What makes it so suspicious is that Pam, being the last to see her mother alive, left her mother's apartment and told the nurses that her mother didn't want to be bothered for dinner or breakfast the next day. They also originally ruled her death "accidental" saying the mother somehow fell *_through_* the waist high bars. When people pointed out it makes no sense that an elderly lady on Ambien could bend metal bars and then squeeze through the small space made in order to fall to her death, they changed it to "undetermined."

Never open/answer the door for ANYONE if you're home UNLESS it's an EXPECTED visit/delivery. Never be as kind to strangers as she was. & You brought up another good point. This ALL should be COMMON SENSE yet people still don't follow this.
I feel so bad for Russ, that poor man, dealing with the trauma of finding his dead wife and then thrown in jail when he was completely innocent.

I don't know if you reasearch these events yourself or arrange the dialogue but your cadence, timing and tone all together is hypnotizing. Whoever does the research for these cases has a knack for knowing an interesting case when they hear one, engrossing, to say the least, someone who truly understands that reality is stranger than fiction. You guys will solve a murder one day, one way or another if you haven't already.

I once met a guy at a social gathering who seemed totally fine and was very good looking. He asked if he could take me out on a date and because I didn't trust automatically, I said sure, but we're going to have to meet at a restaurant. He asked why and I said the house is being renovated. About a week later we met the restaurant we agreed upon. He got there before me and when I went to the table he was sitting at I didn't sit down yet because seeing what he was doing, I pretended I didn't know and I asked him what was he doing. On a piece of paper he'd written my name down at least a hundred times. He answered he was writing my name down but never looked up once at me as he wrote my name away like he was in a psychotic trance. So I was like hey- I'll be right back, I have to use the bathroom and he finally looked at me and said 'sit down' and I played it off saying I'll only be gone a minute silly, order me a drink and then we can see what's good to eat here. He said Ok and I left leaving him only as the dust under my feet as I made my getaway.

That Betsy case is absolutely crazy! I honestly wasn't sure where it was gonna go and I feel so terribly for Russ. Not only did he have to come to the realization that his wife had been cheating on him for a decade with a woman but then see her corpse and then be gaslighted by the jury saying he was "overacting" and then spend years in prison. I sincerely hope Russ finds some form of peace and that Pam never sees the light of day

The Lindsay Hawker case haunts me to this day. I lived over the road from that family and saw her several times growing up. I remember the news crew outside the street all the time and while I was young I understood what happened. 4 years later I was learning to drive and it was her father Bill Hawker who was my teacher and he was so professional and kind as I am not a fast learner at all. I then got a job at the hotel in the same village and had the pleasure of talking to both Bill and Julia, lovely parents. I've moved on from Brandon village years ago but I wish them all the best in life nobody deserves to go through what they did.
Japan might be "safer" in regards of many things compared to other countries, as in, you can leave your stuffs unattended in public place without getting stolen, children can go out by themselves since such a young age, etc. BUT keep in mind this is also a country with very high rate of women harassment. It is never safe enough for women to let their guard down anywhere in the world, sadly

A reminder to not watch the special "What About Pam" that covers the murder of Betsy. The family did not want that series to happen and are actively fighting against it.
I saw the commercial for it months ago and kind of went down a rabbit whole starting with Renée Zellweger because I hadn't seen her in a while and looked her up then found out it was based on a true story so went looking into the actual case and holy shit Pam is derranged. One sentance said if she had just waited a couple months for Besty's cancer to take her then she would be enjoying the insurance money instead of rotting in prison. Poor Betsy. Good thing I have no plans on watching "The Thing about Pam".

I’m tired of these Netflix specials that turn true crime stories into drama/mystery shows.
I found the series entertaining. It did have an oddly whimsical tone, considering the subject matter, but I suspect that's because of how implausibly convoluted the plot was and how inept Pam was as a criminal "mastermind." It was based on the Dateline episodes on the case and even had Keith Morrison as narrator. I think Russ and the family actually owe a large debt of gratitude to Dateline as their tireless investigation into Pam played a large part in seeing she eventually answered for her crimes. If not for them, Russ might still be in prison and Pam would be free, enjoying the money she stole from Betsy's kids.
Was gonna say the same, always trust that feeling. There's a reason why you're feeling it. Even if it's a misperception, it's not going to hurt anything, and an apology is infinitely easier than a fight for your life, and if you lose, death.

This is, absolutely in my opinion, the definition of true crime narrative stories.. I don't miss a single video, great work raven, your the voice of true crime
Living in Japan here. A few notes to add to the general context of the first story.
1) Nova is not a good company and continues to ignore their teachers and underpays them. Don't work for them.
2) A general thing, for foreigners or women, do not hold private English lessons outside of some kind of organization. Creeps are always looking to do private lessons and all kinds of things can happen. You also often should also not be doing extra work on a some teaching visas, and could get in trouble with authorities. It's a huge issue, so just don't risk it.
3) Avoid bars if not in groups. The bar scene in Tokyo can be very dangerous, especially for women. Otherwise, Japan is a fairly safe country even when living alone. But always be cautious.
4) A parasitic lifestyle is not always a red flag in Japan. A lot of people cannot make enough money to live alone, or have serious mental health struggles, etc., and the amount of isolated people known as Hikikomori is rising. If you meet someone like this, please do not automatically assume they are a psychopath.
5) Men usually do not fear the police in cases of sexual assault. Especially for women, men are rarely prosecuted and it is very hard to prove an assault occurred. This is made extra hard if you are a foreigner, as police will often downplay your experiences. I assume he wanted her dead, as there would be no real reason to murder her otherwise when, especially with parents with money, he could have easily gotten away with it.
As a Brit I can’t believe the Lindsey Hawker case was 15 years ago, it feels like yesterday seeing it on the news. Absolutely horrific case though and mad that it took them 4 years to convict him
As for that last case, what a dreadful miscarriage of justice. That poor husband. Makes you wonder if Pam did indeed kill her mother now

Case 3: the first time I heard such a nice 911 operator. Normally I am always shocked how "cold" they sound. I know it comes with the job, but I appreciated this operator a lot.
my best friend killed himself a few years ago... I was shaking, yelling, crying and vomiting. you can't overexaggerate how traumatic and devastating SEEING your loved one dead because of (what he thought was) suicide. there's no limit to how awful it feels to learn that your favorite person killed themselves. i feel so bad for that poor man being accused of overexaggerating his sadness and being his wife's murderer

A lot of girls could be spared if we didn't continuously hammer into their heads to be 'kind' to others. Lindsay like many others felt uneasy but brushed it off. I say it's perfectly fine to say 'no' and not be 'kind' if you don't want to be.
I agree but that really doesn’t apply to Lindsay she had been warned not to be so trusting and naïve but didn’t take it seriously because she believed she was in such a safe country and she was going to say no but then changed her answer when he offered her a large amount of money, that’s not really the same thing as what you’re describing.
Exactly what I sm saying! It starts with the wrong "values" that girls grow up with. Someone here called Lindsay stupid. I know exactly why she was acting that way and it has nothing to do with stupidity but with not wanting to be "bitchy", "unreasonable" or "hysterical".

Looking at that mug shot I would have predicted the closest he could get to a girlfriend was a restraining order.
I really like the high amount of info, the commentary, red flags, and the characteristics of people like psychopaths.
EWU is one of the best channels on TH-cam and the Raven has a brilliant voice for narrating. Very few times do I subscribe to a channel but had to with EWU as it's very well made and as a true crime fan I am hearing about crimes I've never heard of before. Keep up the Great work guys.

in regards to the last case, if someone is calm and or showing a lack of emotion when they discover a loved one diseased it’s seen as suspicious, however in this case the husband’s reaction was seen as suspicious because of how upset he was to the point they played it off as acting. it’s like no matter how you react it can be seen as suspicious
Russ case makes me so angry cause the first trial felt rushed and the police jumped to conclusions without even checking other suspects throughoutly. If they did things would have gone differently

Here in the Philippines, life insurance is not really a thing. Majority sees it as a burden and unnecessary to be included in the budget list. It is not mandatory but yes, land ownership and money can be a reason for envy, greed and yes again, killing 👏

Lindsay was stunning and empathetic by the sounds of it. None of us should have to be looking over our shoulder all the time. My heart goes out to her parents. I have a daughter the same age studying chemistry. He was demon posessed, nothing whatsoever to do with psychology

@@tinaffable agreed. i like the way you said this. i think people who are usually religious tend to not like to believe someone could be that messed up and be human, like a denial sort of vibe. but it happens every day and ya putting the blame on a demon takes it off the murderers messed up self.
in a couple months i am moving to japan to teach english in an eikaiwa similar to lindsay's... this case has hit too close to home since i heard of it a while back. so sad, such a bright girl with tons of potential. great video as always ewu :)

I feel so bad for the husband in the last story. Another tragic case of the police getting tunnel vision and almost ruining an innocent person's life. I hope he sued them to kingdom come
Sadly Lindsey ignored a lot of red flags. The brightest red flag was to go with him to pick up her payment.
She already didn’t have a good feeling about hiM hence she met him once in a public place. But then accepted to go to his house, even his door step was crazy.
I would have waited in the taxi or ask him to drop off payment in her mail or at the door and never see him again.
That police call with Russ brought tears to my eyes, poor man, he sounded absolutely destroyed.
Just wanted to say finding the EWU channels has really been great. All of the videos are very well done and we'll researched and the narrator has honestly one of the best voices I've heard for narrating true crime stories. I used to watch the show Crime Watch Daily before it was cancelled and had been looking for a good replacement to watching that show ever since. Ewu has definitely filled that void.

It is understandable of Betsy's husband to assume she had taken her own life based on her grim cancer prognosis. A woman in the town I live in was diagnosed with cancer and waited in the doctor's building in the bathroom for the building to close and then jumped from the roof of the building (about 10 stories), in front of many witnesses. One witness being a local judge here. Very very tragic.

Look up "Woman jumps from building after cancer diagnosis Steubenville, Ohio."

I always get so drawn into the stories and the narrator’s captivating voice, that I almost forget to hit the like button!
When Pam was luring Luis into her home if you listen to her tone and demeanor you end up finding she wasn't lazily or putting on the worse acting performance she was actually working her ass off. Don t listen to the words. Listen to how the words are being said. She sounds almost frantic but then calm but rushed. With the 911 operator all though very subdued she needed someone there and quick but when speaking to Luis it was softer in tone without any like was said fight or flight communication. Knowing Luis had "cognitive difficulties" she sounded like she was coaxing him like a child into her home but having the 911 operator on the phone while coaxing Luis would had scared Luis if Pam acted as she should of being a victim of home invasion. She sounded like she was playing someone who had a very soft voice who could talk only above a whisper and yelling would of been unheard of from this individual. Pam knew what she was doing just couldn't improvise a change to her plan when things fell through.
As a parent this is ONE of the most fearful scary things is to have that worry feeling not wanting your child to go but you know you can’t completely stop them 😭 knowing this and so many other things are the worry ugh worst feeling ever!!!
The gross negligence in case 2 from all forms of 'professionals' from fire dept to law enforcement to sbi etc. Please explain to me how NO ONE found Danny's corpse found in almost the exact same spot as his wife? The total amount of mistakes made in Case 2 by law enforcement is shocking to say the least. The family did all of their jobs for them, so freaking appauling! I can't even fathom what that family went through! The amount of cases that could've been solved so much sooner were it not for law enforcement/fire dept incompetence or corruption is absolutely infuriating.

Oh gosh Pam Hupp! Poor Russ, I've always felt so awful for him... The pain in his voice is so obvious in the call. Imagine what he must have been going through all that time... What a nightmare 😱
We have to stop ignoring the messages from our fight or flight system. We instinctively recognize when a predator has identified us as potential prey and our sympathetic nervous system triggers fight or flight along with a message to ‘run’ or ‘hide’. These are different from the everyday intrusive thoughts that we all have. Your internal warning system tells you to do things that would be beneficial to you, such as ‘run’ upon encountering danger. Intrusive thoughts instruct you to do things that would be abhorrent to you as a reminder to not do that thing, such as ‘Jump off that bridge for no reason’.
In summary: Intrusive thoughts are things that would hurt you. Do not do them. DO listen to your fear response and possibly survive a predator. Thank you. 🙇♀️

The case with the 2 girls got some things mixed up.
I just watched a documentary on it.
Jeremy Jones didn’t say he dumped the girls bodies in the abandoned mines, that was the 3rd guy still alive.
When they couldn’t find the bodies, he claimed that Phil or David must’ve moved them and the judge believed him, and still gave him the plea deal.
He was released less than 3 years later for “good behavior”, which is disgusting. His plea deal made him an “accessory to murder” and had the kidnapping, torture, and murder charges dropped.
And had the police followed through with the insurance card instead of forgetting it in a box of documents, they might’ve found the girls alive.
I feel so terrible for Russ. The way he was sobbing when he found his wife broke my heart, because I'd read the comments and went into that story knowing he was innocent. He had to go through hell. I hope every breathing moment for Pam is spent in agony.

Im from Saint Charles and I used to work for Pam's ex-husband he's actually my Step-Dad's nephew which Ive always found funny because he's younger than my Step-Dad. He owns one of the biggest Construction Companies in the St.Louis Area and he ended up divorcing Pam before any of this stuff happened but apparently none of these tv shows have ever done it justice as far as demonstrating just how crazy and spiteful Pam actually was. Never met her personally but heard about how their divorce went and she could have easily tried to end my old boss like this and some people were pretty surprised she never tried to knowing how spiteful and vengeful and full of hate that she could be. She was basically just the embodiment of poison from the things I've heard about her both from family and from the reports. They do a pretty good job of exposing her but from what I've heard you really had to have experienced it personally to get an honest and true perspective of just how bad she really was.
You should troll her while sh s incarcerated. She sounds Borderline, extreme Narcissistic. Appeal to her Entitlement and narcissism, and she’ll crack. She’s likely seeking pen pals💰
These are good tips! I'm going to adhere to them! I was lucky but I experienced a similar situation to Lindsey thankfully I had a friend intervene tho the guy still tried to stalk me and showed up at my door unannounced 1 more time! I slammed the door in his face and told him my boyfriend was on his way. I keep seeing him occasionally with my boyfriend but I will not look at him nor speak to him. He gives me terrible bad vibes. He's a lier and dresses up in fake uniforms and he's huge tall and girth wise I'm a very small woman but he will meet my machete or worse if he dares come near me AGAIN. He invited himself aggressively into my home then to dinner then would not leave no matter how blunt I was. I gave him food to go. He literally had us in a relationship and married in the short time he was in my house. I never felt so violated. He also claimed to be a marine!!!!!!!
