    Up to now there hasn't been a sporty and practical everyday electric hatchback, and certainly not an SUV, but the Volkswagen ID.4 GTX might be it.
    The GTX name will be used on VW's sportiest electric vehicles, and the German carmaker hopes GTX will be to electric cars what GTI is to petrol cars - and that's affordable, practical fun.
    The ID.4 is the first car to get the GTX name and gets a second motor with an extra 101bhp in the front, making it all-wheel drive. The GTX's total power output is just under 300bhp which allows it to get from 0-62mph in 6.2 seconds, and it has a slightly higher top speed of 112mph. And it gets some slightly more racy body styling.
    Has it worked? Tom Ford finds out

    I tried this car and also Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ionic 5 and I think the ID.4 GTX is a more finished, complete and useful car than the two others. The level of comfort and confidence it delivers, is the amongst the very best, if not the best, in that class.

    The North American version doesn't pretend to be sporty. It's just the regular ID4 with the second motor for AWD and MORE ground clearance, not less.

I also hope they’re working on improving their software, I know they have invested considerably more money into electrification than any other legacy manufacturer, and they have a great start with the ID.4 and I know it will improve along the way!

    Did you check the tyre pressures before driving the car and maybe adjust them down a little if the car was handed over with them over inflated as often media cars are, especially EV's to give Range. Testing it with 4 adults would mean more, or putting 300 kg of weight in the 'Family' sized car.

  • @jamesmccormack3229
    @jamesmccormack3229 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hopefully the ID3 GTX will handle the weight in a more dynamic sporty way, more of an electric GTI hatch feeling, with it not being a SUV like the ID4.

  • @MrFatknacker

    Given the size of an ID.4, possibly a comparison with the a similar power 4x4 Tiguan would make more sense than a Golf GTI? An ID.3 with the same 4WD setup and a middling sized battery pack (to keep the weight in check) might be fun, but inevitably a lot of money for not much range…

    I think the biggest improvement that could be made to EVs is weight reduction . I am sure given time this will happen. I used to have a Zoe and even with that I could really feel the weight (especially in the wet when braking and cornering felt quite a struggle). The thing I don't think most EVs need is more power (speed limit reductions everywhere in my area in recent years).

    • @timscott3027

      @@timscott3027 Wrong MORE Range through better efficiency Miles/kWh and weight reduction through removing of redundant parts with structural battery. This is the future of BEVs. Modern ICE car are heavy too, should not be difficult to make equivalent BEVs just marginally heavier than ICE.

    • @timscott3027
      @timscott3027 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree that this is where EVs are and where they're going but I can also see a future for light weight supermini a and b segment cars that don't need hundreds of miles of range. My point is that once fast chargers are everywhere range anxiety won't be a thing and most people could live with less range 100mile cars are only crap at the moment because they can't charge everywhere at 250kw chargers. If you could stop and recharge a 30 kw Battery on every street in minutes it won't matter so much.

    I know styling is personal but to me it just looks so dull. The Cupra is way more convincing as a sporty EV and I think has the better strategy of using the ID3 as a base. I think the IDs are probably decent if unexceptional buys lower down their range but as the price increases, there are much more interesting alternatives.

    Excellent useful informative review. Its a pity AWD in EVs is aimed more at middle aged boy racers and performance rather than functional 4x4 traction (ie better winter handling, grip, traction, snow and ice). Not looking to tow a sheep trailer across a wet field in winter, but would like the grip and safety of 4x4 ICE. All the BEV manufacturers have chased performance marketing with their AWD dual motor models rather than functional traction. March 2018 with the 'beast from the east' snowfall most RWD BEVs would be left stranded on the road side. These extreme weather events are likely to be more frequent than less with climate change. Pit VW only do dull as ditch water dark black interiors, why not cream leather or light browns like US market. Fed up of soviet audi black upholstery in cars in Europe.

    • @Neojhun
      @Neojhun ปีที่แล้ว

      Umm Harsh weather traction with Dual Motor BEV is easy and probably just basic function of the GTX. Even a RWD single motor BEV could be excellent in snow due to the inherent nature of BEVs. The drive train is basically a ServoMechanism which can adjust torque at 150hz to respond to ground conditions. When you combine it with Dual Motor AWD BEVS are inherently on muddy / dusty dirt roads and snow. It does not requier massive amount of work to make the traction great. The only problem with most of these CUV is the Body and Overhangs Entry and Departure Angles are not designed for Off Roading thus will get damaged. Jag i-Pace & Tesla Model 3 Dual Motor are amazing Dirt Track Rally cars, just don't take it rock crawling.
