2022 Volkswagen ID.4 AWD Dual Motor Review

  • Brian reviews the dual motor AWD Volkswagen ID.4, finding it to be a great family vehicle with plenty of things going for it. It is powerful enough that it will keep drivers feeling confident in more strenuous traffic situations, but isn't so violently quick that is frightens passengers. It is comfortable and fitted with unique tech that might be hit or miss for some people, but worked well overall for him.

    I bought the ID.4 because the price was so good and it is a better built car than the Tesla model Y. The three year free charging was a nice bonus. It has been a wonderful car. No regrets. Recommend it to anyone.

    ID4 in AWD pro base model (51k after incentives and taxes) is almost 38k cheaper than the Tesla model y (89k after taxes) here in Canada if you factor in luxury tax and EV incentives. Model Y does not have any incentives.. So it is a HUGE difference. You can almost buy 2 ID4s at the same price. It is really a no-brainer for people who just want an EV for everyday use. I am thinking of getting an EV6 to replace our hybrid because I am so impressed with the ID4 we bought.

    Good points. Yes, the Model Y is better in nearly every way. But so is a Porsche Cayenne compared to a cheap CUV. We need more "everyday" EV for the mass market. More grocery-getter-and-get-the-kids-to-school cars, not more status symbols with sporty 0-60 times and nice brand logos. Like you said, EV need to be accessible for the masses.

    • @Takermania70
      @Takermania70 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      YES! I keep saying this. Why is every EV trying to be a sports car? I don't car about low 0-60 times in my gas powered cars, so why would I care in an EV? Is it cool that there are ev trucks as fast as sports cars? Sure, but that's not what the average person needs. Most people just need a safe, reliable vehicle to get to and from work that has enough room for their kids and doesn't break the bank. I think, for most people, the 3 most important considerations for an EV are charging speed, range, and cost

    • @bayoomole4376
      @bayoomole4376 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@Takermania70 It's because of the "car enthusiast" who extol the virtues of a V12 and the magnificent sound and "rumble of the engine" cry about the death of ICE and how an EV can never replicate that "fun". These voices are louder than the normal person who just wants a nice car that gets them where they need to be. And because those voices are so loud, all the automakers are doing those EV's with amazing 0-60 times to show that tiny albeit loud section of people that "EV's can be fun too." The funny thing is some if not most of those "car enthusiasts" can't afford a V12 or V10 or V8. But they'll yell "WHAT ABOUT THE SOUND!!!"

      In Los Angeles, Teslas are becoming as common and boring as Toyota Camrys. They are everywhere and they all look the same. The beluga whale look is not inspiring. I would chose just about anything over a Tesla just for the sake of variety. They are also way too expensive. Model Y is $60K! The id4 is $45K plus you get $7500 tax credit you can’t get with Teslas anymore. That’s a $20k premium for the Tesla. It's a no brainer for me. I test drove the iD4 and really liked it.

I appreciate Brian's unbiased review of the ID.4's user interfaces, which other reviewers seem to be overly critical of. While I prefer smaller cars (Prius size), I'd be happy with either the ID.4 or the IONIQ 5.

    Great job Brian! The decision between buying an ID.4 or Model Y just comes down to how much money you want to (or are able to) spend. I don’t think there is another way of putting it. Model Y is better in many ways than the VW, but if you don’t care about the ways that the Tesla is better, might as well buy the one that is $21k cheaper…

    Best vehicle in class but the car market is completely screwed up when an SUV "for the masses" is over 45k. Taxes bring it to 50k
    Unless you're household is making over 120k, then you shouldn't be looking at a vehicle that cost 50k.

    I cancelled my order for a Model Y and reserved and ID4. I just liked it so much more than the Y. I felt it was more comfortable, I liked how it drove and I don't need to go 0-60 in 2 seconds for my around the town driving. I also don't need to impress anyone with a Model Y. The ID4 has everything I need for around town driving AND 3 years free charging is hard to beat! I can't wait for my ID4 to arrive. I have owned 2 Beetles in the past so I'm definitely a repeat customer.

    I really like this video -- as i do most of your videos. Brian is not as polished as Alex, but he's thoughtful and I am impressed that he liked the VW as much as he did....Currently I drive a 2018 Honda CR-V EX with 31K miles on it, and it's probably the best vehicle I've ever owned. It's great in so many ways. I like the size and driving position. Just purchased it from Honda at the end of the lease and it's got a lot of upside when i get ready to sell it in a few months. I'm ready to go electric!!
    So....I'm leaning towards a 2022 Ford Mach-e Select RWD. Other option/idea is ID4 Pro AWD. Similar pricing. I really like both, have driven both (VW was RWD version). Living in AZ, I'd prefer cloth seats and no moonroof/sunroof. I have a pretty short commute (only about 5 miles each way), and only take 1-2 road trips a year. Will lease this through my work. My question for Alex and/or Brian -- which of these two would you choose if you were me? thanks

    Really enjoy the content you guys have published on EV's. Do you guys have an ID.4 vs Solterra by chance? Been searching for one and would love to know your thoughts. These are the only two I'm considering at this point. You make good points about both. However, feature wise, such as the heat pump system in the Solterra compared to what the ID.4 uses? Not sure if I've found accurate data to compare the two but the ID.4 originally didn't have a heat pump but it was introduced in 2022? Anyway hoping you guys have all the details to compare both vehicles.

Been watching ID4 reviews since the launch and it is still one of my choice. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the other. Just waiting for availability to be able to test drive the Ioniq. Just wanted to also see the driver seat height since I do not like squatting to get in to a vehicle. That is my main reason for getting a CUV. The Hyundai and Kia are bigger than they look. They're compact crossovers, not hatchbacks, and the seat height is where you'd expect it to be. Of course you'd need to try it for yourself, but I don't think you'll find it too low.

    Hey guys, been a big fan of the videos and think Brian is doing a great job. I was curious if you could start reviewing the more utility side of things for these crossovers/suvs in your reviews as well. Things like: how flat do the seats fold, could I comfortably sleep in the back for car camping by myself/ with a partner, ease of loading heavy gear in and out of (how high is the back lip from the floor). These are questions I regularly have when shopping out new EVs and am constantly shocked on how little information is out there for these questions. Isn't the point of a SUV/crossover style to have greater utility?

      word!

    • @ragweedmakesmesneeze
      @ragweedmakesmesneeze 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think if you really started actually testing these sort things, you'd find that most hatchbacks and SUVs aren't all that practical for cargo capacity relative to their exterior dimensions. It's like the automotive journalist default is to see a lift-back or hatch and just assume that it's more utilitarian than a similarly sized sedan. For example, both this "Utility" vehicle and the Honda Accord sedan get a roller bag score of 5. Except, to get 5 roller bags into the ID.4, you completely block the rear window. Whereas, in an Accord, you get 5 bags in a trunk, and no obstructed views, plus greater security during on the street parking situations. Sure, if you are talking about sleeping in your car, and it's just you and maybe one other person and you can fold down the rear seats, there's a legit argument to be made for more cargo capacity and practicality in an SUV or hatch/liftbacks. But for those of us who need to use our back seats for people and pets, a big on the outside, small on the inside SUV is a less than ideal choice.

      Here in FL the dealers are charging a $10k markup on the Korean EV's and they're very hard to come by. The cars are more crossovers than SUV's, being somewhat smaller and lower to the ground. Your going to sit lower and have less ground clearance for off-road. Charging is faster and I like the AC outlet feature, but you have to find a charger that can put out all that juice. You can also save thousands by getting a Bolt EUV, which is smaller still, but with a proposed $12k federal tax credit, could wind up costing as low as $23k!!!

    FYI ID4 AWD is faster to 60 in real world testing than 266HP Mach E. See Motorweek ID4 test drive. ID4 has more cargo space, is faster, has better range, has ambient interior lighting, can tow, has heated steering wheel and heated seats. For same features you pay $10,000 more for Mach E. It’s whether you want to spend the extra coin on the Mach E or settle for less features. You can equip them both for around $50000 but the Mach E won’t have the glass roof with sunshade, ambient lighting or AWD and will be slower and shorter range. It’s prettier though IMO.

  • @venti4268
    @venti4268 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The price difference between a full spec ID.4 GTX and model Y is very small in Europe.. That said I feel ID.4 is the best family car. The road noise from the Model Y is worse than from the ID.4 The ride is also much harder and stiffer with the Model Y. And max allowed cargo weight is right now much lower on Model Y than on ID.4. Tesla will probably change that,but they will not tell when to customers. And there are no hooks or cargo protection kit sold with the model Y in Europe right now. So if you do want that you have to look for aftermarket solutions. So for a familiy car the german ID.4 has it all. Tesla delivers a more sportier car,but Model Y should be the best family car..right? Well,I do think it fails on that segment. If practicallity counts, then ID.4 is the more mature car for that job. If you want a fast fun car buy a model 3. I got them both,id.4 and model 3,and Tesla has to do some family thinking to get the model Y right for the family segment. More comfort,more practical features should be done on the model Y to make it a more mature family car.

Battery resource mining is brutal environmentally motto mention you can make 50-70 hybrids from a single EV. Furthermore look where electricity comes from to charge EVs. Base Model Y deliveries are August so long as you add a paid option; ANY paid option. Their lowest price paid options are $1k. If you don't add a paid option, deliveries are December. Seriously, you can add a different paint option for $1000, or switch to white interior for $1000 and it'll move up the delivery date 4 months. I don't say that as being a good thing, but as being embarrassing. They're pushing back base vehicle delivery times four months over a whopping $1000...for a vehicle that starts at $59k!.... yowzers...

    Not sure I agree with the argument of are features xyz worth $20k. This assumes the $20k goes into a fire and is gone. The reality is the 5 year cost is what matters and will EVs holding their value even before the market went crazy it's more like are these features worth $3k more over 5 years. Just making that number up but you get the point. A $60k car is going to depreciate more than a $40k car but it's not going to lose all $20k more.

    • @markmiller3279
      @markmiller3279 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe not all, but luxury car depreciation is usually quite high. Most of that extra $20k will be gone in five years. Right now EV value may hold up, but we have no idea if that will continue. If Teslas deprevoate like their ICE competitors it won't.
      Used car buyers are typically seeking reliable transportation, not fancy extras that break a lot. The most reliable brands have the best resale value, and most luxury car brands are pretty unreliable. Consumer Reports has Tesla reliability even lower than other luxury brands. I don't think used-car buyers will want cars with a bunch of broken features.

    • @gregb7353
      @gregb7353 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@markmiller3279 Comparing historical ICE luxury car depreciation to EVs is just flawed. If you had a 2020 $50k MachE with 120k miles on it, what do you think it would be worth on the market? It's not depreciating by 50% like a Merc or BMW would. You would easily get $40k for it. Why? Because you know you can drive it another 120k miles without any issues and it's just as good as a 2022 MachE but you save some money. What would it be worth with 240k miles? Probably $35k. Why? Because you can't touch an EV that good for $35k and you know it will drive 120k more miles with no trouble.

    • @ATH_Berkshire

    I just look at a vehicle & try to compare all of the various elements individually. Fuel costs, acceleration, braking, safety feature, quality of build and materials inside and out. All of these cars are alternatives to each other whether they are ICE or EV or hybrid. The whole problem with the Tesla fanatical crowd is, it's Tesla or nothing and they seem to think Teslas are a gift from heaven. I've driven the Model 3 and Model Y, and believe me, they aren't a gift from heaven.
    So now I'm seeing a SUV like the Q4 AWD and think, hey wait, that's the same price as a SQ5. Acceleration is very close, fuel costs are substantially lower in the Q4, maintenance will cost a lot less with the Q4, Q4 is quieter similar quality build and int materials.. And if I want to save a little more the ID4 AWD top trim is a very good alternative.

I will look at the GV60 when its released but I feel like its gonna cost at least 5k more than the EV6 for not much gain....and I would consider the Model Y if the tax credit is revised this year but that's not looking like it will happen. And honestly I think I prefer the EV6 over the Model Y anyway... they are a dime a dozen here in SoCal.

I consider the Audi Q4 E-tron, E-tron, Lucid Air, Mercedes EQS and the BMW i4 and iX as luxury EVs. Price really isn't the determining factor to luxury. Having said that, the Tesla Model Y, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ionic 5, Kia EV6 and VW ID.4 are a competing segment. They are relatively close in price, size and features. The VW is definitely the price leader, but the biggest issue is the ADM that traditional dealers are adding to all of these vehicles. In many cases, most of these EVs are priced more than a Model Y.
