Volkswagen ID.5 GTX REVIEW including real-world efficiency, range and running cost.

  • This is the Volkswagen ID5 GTX- the sporty version of the coupe version of the ID.4!
I like the ID4 as an all round practical family electric vehicle so what do i think of its sleeker, sportier brother?
I give it a real-world road test to get the efficiency and actual range (not just rated range)!.
Some comparisons to diesel running costs per mile.
BIK tax savings for EVs as a company vehicle are still massive too!
I then give you my driving impressions and a thorough walk-around detailed review including all the things i like and don't like.
Along the way I'll give some comparisons to similar cars I know well including the Tesla Model Y and the Hyundai Ioniq 5
They all make for very practical family EVs and each have their strenghts.
For the ID.5 i particularly like the design, the space, the range is decent and the headlights are excellent!
Let me know what you think in the comments below.

I was seriously considering buying the ID.5. It looks great and it’s a Volkswagen. But then I started comparing prices, performance, range, space and features. Then I concluded I should buy the Tesla Model Y. The ID.5 didn’t even come close to compete with the Tesla. The price of the base ID.5 seems cheap, but then you have to add stuff that comes standard on the Tesla. The only thing the ID.5 is competing with the Model Y is the looks. Everything else is inferior.

Lights are better auto wipers work, adaptive dampers are ace, VW build quality is better, VW has parking sensors, VW has an augmented HUD, ambient lights - there are alot of things that are better with the VW but id agree its overpriced now since Tesla lowered their pricing.

I really wanted to love the Tesla model Y. I was ready to buy but after a test drive I realised that it really is a lump of tech on wheels. The damping was horrendous. The car couldn't cope with mild acceleration off a roundabout, a bit of spirited driving. Not to mention being jiggled constantly on straight, fairly smooth roads. Test drove an ID3 immediately afterwards and yea, worse/less tech but much better handling and ride quality from VW (and the Kia Niro we also tested).

@@scottwills4698 sure, there are things better with the VW. Buy many things are optional extra’s. The most important part of an electiric car is the technology behind it and Tesla is simply better with that.

The rear wheel drive Tesla Model 3 has a range similar to this, but has smaller batteries and is more efficient, has access to the Supercharger network, does 0-60 in 5.8 secs and costs £43k. The MY is slightly more expensive at £45k and slightly slower (0-60 in 6.6 secs), but has more storage capacity. Delivery is about a month. My choice is the M3 with a tow hitch (+£1k) and a trailer (c. £500) for the odd occasion that loads don't fit in the boot.

Or cruise control that works in the UK without frightening the 💩 out of me. Sadly, none of these cars are without some (very significant) compromises. Agree, not perfect & a case of each choosing the best compromise that works for them. The M3 does have a tow hitch (on their web £1080) - we've ordered one. USS a bummer but I've been relying on a single reversing camera for years. Aware of phantom braking and will learn when to switch off.

I had a Passat GTE before the ipace and I missed it a lot when I went to the ipace. But the price of ipace's have gone up too much now and what did cost 75k is now 90k for the same spec. And I've never actually liked anything about it other than the speed and the look of it (plus the fact it's a Jag).

As someone that has both a Model 3 LR and a Model Y LR, the only real benefits of owning a Tesla are the efficiency, the charging network & related software integration. Reasons NOT to buy a Tesla model Y include:
      - Terrible ride quality
      - Total lack of parking sensors
      - Ridiculously poor cruise control
      - Pathetic auto-wipers
      - Lack of matrix headlight functionality, despite being fitted to the vehicle
I’ve clearly bought into the whole Tesla sales pitch, but as soon as the public charging network improves such that long-range journeys become stress free, I can’t envisage buying another Tesla. Some of their engineering is brilliant, but the basics (see the list above) don’t compare with cars more than 10 years old. How do I know? Because I sold one (Škoda Octavia vRS) to buy the Model Y. And it’s only going to get worse as Tesla continue their penny-pinching, as evidenced by the removal of stalks on the Model S & X
