  • After a whole bunch of time spent on the water and not a lot to show for it, I finally bit the bullet and got myself a nice entry level portable sonar.
    In this video I do a quick unboxing and assembly, then go through a couple of the many features that are included in the Garmin Striker 4 Portable Fish Finder
    You can get it off amazon for cheaper than I bought it at Canadian Tire. Use the link below

    Thanks for the video. I really want to buy the 4plus and am considering buying one of these to use in a float tube. Just wondering if the unit would sit comfortably in my lap with the transducer floating at the side/behind? Am struggling to find decent mounts in the UK for a float tube. Would that bag be able to be strapped to the top side of a tube?

    • @jeffdicks
      @jeffdicks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sorry to say that I don't think it would be feasible to strap the bag to the side of a float tube. It's pretty heavy with the battery in there and I think it would create an awful imbalance in weight distribution, not mention put an unknown amount of stress on the tube itself. That said, I don't know anything about float tubes so I could be right out to lunch. As for the transducer, I'm not sure how effective it would be free floating behind you. I think that you would have issues with it not staying straight which will cause significant inaccuracies in the sonar reading. I would, however recommend something smaller and lighter such as a Deeper Sonar unit. They're pretty neat little units. A friend did a unboxing review of the winter bundle he bought last year for ice fishing, but you can use those little things in a lot of different scenarios. Heres a link to his unboxing video of that unit.

      He took it out ice fishing a few times too so I would encourage you to see how it worked in reality as well.

      Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it. Other tubers do use this unit with a battery on the side of the float tube but with a purpose built strap/mount for it and the transducer is fixed on to an extendable pole. The main/best quality ones I can find are only in the USA though and I haven't had a response from them when I asked about shipping to Scotland. I will def check out the link you gave me thank you. I was considering a Deeper unit initially until I saw so many other tubers using this and better models, & the cost was similar I thought I'd be better going for the more substantial Garmin, but the mount is the stumbling block! Back to the drawing board! Thanks again for your help 👍

Also how tight to you make that wingnut attachment?

    • @jeffdicks
      @jeffdicks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ohhh that's the suction cup mount for the transducer to stick it to the back of a boat. You'll need a pretty smooth metal or plastic surface for it to work though. Honestly I don't know if I'd trust it. I ended up not ever using it anyways though.

    • @brendana5174
      @brendana5174 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jeffdicks I have lost a few transducers before where that suction came off the boat and the prop cut off the dangling cable. Now back to my issue that suction cup is attached to the bracket on the top. At the bottom of the bracket is where you insert the transducer and lock it in with the long screw, 2 metal washers and the wingnut. Someone mentioned somehwere that the black spindle is placed between that metal screw as a spacer.

    Hi mate when charging do you connect both black and red cables?

    • @jeffdicks
      @jeffdicks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! The red cable is the positive and goes on the red colored lead of the battery and the black is the negative, and it goes on the black colored lead of the battery. If you don't have both cables of the charger connected to the battery or you have them connected backwards it won't charge.
      You'll know you've connected it properly when the indicator light on the charging cable turns orange, signifying that it is charging. When it's complete the light will turn green.

    Hey did you use the suction cup?

    • @jeffdicks
      @jeffdicks  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The suction cup didn't work at all on my pelican because the plastic was textured on the back. I had to duct tape it onto the back of my kayak until I got myself some duct seal to do the through hull method.

    • @jeffdicks
      @jeffdicks  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@strnto8967 htm, not sure how well it would work on an air raft. I don't have any experience with them though so take that as you will. Unless you can get the duct seal well inside the tubing i don't think it would work. Even if you could, I imagine an air raft might be a bit bouncy on the water, you risk having the water in the ducer well splashing out which would render your transducer ineffective. The water in the well is what makes it work. It's probably best if you just get a trolling motor transducer clamp and use it that way like you said.

    What in the world is the boat shaped 3M sticky tape thing for? The directions that came with mine showed pouring water into it and mounting it somewhere with the water in it for 24 hours? The directions with this unit are some of the worst I've seen for any kind of product. Btw, mine is setup as far as yours is in this video. Just curious about the tape boat shaped thing

    • @jeffdicks
      @jeffdicks  ปีที่แล้ว

      thats supposed to be a foam mount full putting your transducer in the hull of a boat (or kayak mostly). It's hit or miss for people. It did not work for me so I had to come up with another solution for mounting the transducer inside my old pelican kayak.
      Here's the video I did about that: th-cam.com/video/rJzGsIOwwbQ/w-d-xo.html
