Secluded Back Lake Splake - Hike in Ice Fishing Southern Ontario
This was my first ice fishing trip of the 2024/2025 season and I couldn't have asked for a more memorable experience!
My friend, Miquael, sent me a message late last year and told me he was starting his own guiding business, and told me to come out for a trip with him. Of course I couldn't say no, but there was a catch:
He asked me if I wanted to go on an adventure. Obviously I did, but I didn't really know what he was talking about. So we decided I would drive up on a Friday night, crash at his place, and hit the lakes early the next morning. Here's where the catch comes in.. the day before I left, Miq told me to bring a backpack, because we'd be hiking in light about 2km's through the only public access to a small back lake through crown land.
He promised adventure, and adventure is what I got! My first Splake of the season which is also my personal best, and probably only the 3rd or 4th I've ever caught AND a ton of fun playing with some feisty Yellow Perch!
This isn't the typical experience you'll get when you hire Miq as a guide, however. He'll take you out in style with all the toys and creature comforts you could ever want for an enjoyable, memborable and comfortable experience ice fishing. Whether you're new and want to try it out, or an experienced angler, Miq will make your day great! (I hear he's even got a portable toilet and a privacy tent for it, in case that's something you might be worried about!)

I appreciate the video. Thank you, so much!
When you go fast, does the transducer arm move in the opposite direction of the water current?
It does not, and should not. I'm easily able to rotate it, but the water flow around it while moving is not forceful enough to move it. It's also designed hydrodynamically to cut through the water to reduce force while in motion.
Sorry but Palomar is best. Any knot with more loops weakens the loop area and also the line rub against the sharp edge of the eye. Pass
Nice new auger bud.
Love this!
❤️❤️❤️
Thanks Jeff! That's a great video and awesome edit! Love the slow mo of don't do what I just did when you're running to get the rod 😅😅😅. Any other time you want to get out let me know! It was a blast!
hahahahaha I thought you would laugh at that! I had a blast, brother! I'm still reminiscing about that day! Can't wait for our next trip out together!
thanks for the video
start Fly fishing and have no issues
Hah! I actually picked it up this summer past! Kind of, anyways. I had a friend show me the ropes and I've been practicing here and there since then. I don't think it will replace my conventional gear ever, but I do really enjoy it and plan on doing more next season
This is an awesome knot!
Awesome video
This is literally just a dropper rig knot, but you are using the hook eye to prevent the twisted loop from slipping back through.
I just ordered one... i cannot wait for it to arrive. Good luck ice fishing this year!
So the transducer that came with the unit will shoot through the hull?
It had no problem going through the plastic hull of my old kayak when set up like I did in the video
I marked my spud with inches like you did. To get a thickness number, go through with the spud bar as clean as you can, and then turn the bar 90 degrees and pull up until the top of the chisel hangs up. The marking will show you the estimated thickness. The real thickness should be more than this, because the spud hole tends to chip off chunks on the bottom edge of the hole (between the water and the underside of the ice), which can make the reading less than the true thickness. (A picture would help here!)
I’ve lost so many fish on this including a tournament winner. I’m scouring for a better way to
Does it matter if you pop sides first or the top first
On this one, it's better to pop all the sides out first. Otherwise you'll have a difficult time getting underneath it to push the top up and lock it into place. In fact, im not even sure you could pop the top up before the sides.
Awesome detailed description, I appreciate the information from weight, accessories, stability, integrated items and more
Thanks for the great feedback! I'm super happy you liked the video!
Phenomenal footage and short.
Thank you! I've lived near it for so long, im kind of kicking myself for not going to actually see it neither my own eyes before now. It really is a spectacular sight to see
Excellent review!
Using lead blower and end up by k pump It verry quickly just 1-2 minutes
Great review! The mounts are “universal mounts”, not Yak Attack mounts. The attachment/base you added for the Yak Attack accessories is the Yak Attack mount. Same, they are not Scotty mounts until you actually add a Scotty mount. Just helping you with the delivery. I used to call the Universal mounts, Scotty mounts and was corrected by my buddy. There’s even no name stuff you can attach to the universal mounts. I like the kayak!! There’s the Wilderness iATAK that is full dropstitch all around that’s a couple of hundred more and performs well also. It seems like it will be a drier kayak than this one. Nice stuff!! I have fished out of inflatable boats for decades, I also have buddies with the same level of experience. Never put a hook in any of all of the inflatables we have had The true “rubber” boats of similar material to the sides of this kayak is extremely tough. Like you said, it’s possible to hook one, but you would have to be pretty careless. I had a pike throw a hook right by the boat, my mistake, and it bounced off the boat, but sunk 2 barbs into my forearm deep enough the barbs caught. I pushed them through, cut the tips off and backed them out. A bit painful,,, 😂😂. But no boat puncture!! 😊😊 Thanks a lot for the objectivity. 😊
Absolutely love it! Just saved me $35US which was what someone wanted for a piece of plastic and 2 screws and 4 inches of thread bar!
Glad I could help you save some cash!!
Great review. I’ll be ordering the Raku. Thank you.
Thanks for the visual 👊🏽
Simple drop shot knot don't always stay in place and that's why you have to upgrade to the Palomar knot 😊to keep the hook 🪝 in place better 😊👍🐟🌊🎣
Im not sure how you mean that it doesnt always "stay in place", but I've been using this knot since I made this video for rigging my dropshots and I've never personally experienced the knot moving. If you do it correctly (which is super simple) this knot will not shift up or down the line. Have you tried this knot and had it not stay in place, and If so, are you absolutely sure you've done it right?
Just waiting for this beauty...I wonder how it will work as a spearfishing platform for shore diving. Will check soon😎
I would love to hear how that works out! Please come back and let me know when you have a chance!
does it work if you dont put water on it?
Mine didn't, I had to put water in the well. I've seen and heard of people using silicone to make a permanent mount, or other materials, but I've never tried it so I can't speak to how effective it is or isn't. I simply used water. There just can't be any air between the transducer, hull and water, otherwise it will not work. The sonar transmission can't pass through air.
@@jeffdicks thanks dude!
Learned this style dropshot knot and never looked back. It's easier to tie in windy conditions as well.
I never really thought of that being a benefit, but it's true none the less!
Excellent, OLD Indian Trick !
My grandfather called it a Lasher knot. Grampa knew so many cool knots but this is my favorite.
Beautifully simple!
You gave the best explanation over everyone else I've investigated. So, your video is the one I sent to a friend who doesn't seem to think swivels are important. And he's convinced they have no valid purpose except to make it easier to swap out lures quickly. He knows absolutely nothing about line-twist or the perils it creates. Thank you, sir.
Well, to be perfectly honest, your friend isn't entirely wrong! If you are retrieving a spoon at the right speed, it should flutter back and forth, not spin, so it wouldn't be introducing line twist. BUT, how often do we ALWAYS retrieve at the correct speed? Having a snap swivel doesn't ruin the action of a spoon retrieved at the best speed so using one isn't a detriment, so to speak. He is right about the benefit of speed when changing spoons/Lures though!
In ‘your’ lake 😂 Yeah ok buddy
@@ChampaynePapi06 he means ours as in everyone dip shit
I didn't say "my" lake anywhere here.
As a bank fisherman I constantly pick up trash and it's usually plastic bottles or fishing line 🤮 As Anglers it is our duty to keep these waters safe and too protect our ecosystems.
So true!
Might have to try out some Goby's, Particularly if I fish Lake Ontario.
You definitely need to try them www.limestonelures.ca/products/goobergoby?srsltid=AfmBOoratmwnlUOKXD7nuLSou44OV37LE1thjZGXMKuebov0BrKnoBPw
I tested it with 10 # braid and 20# tatsu fc. My impression is it’s not nearly as strong as the Palomar
I've never tried this knot with braid, I imagine it wouldn't work well because braid won't cinche down against itself the way fluorocrabon of even mono would. This knot is really intended for a fluorocarbon leader. If you're using a dropshot, you should be using a fluorocarbon leader anyways. It's a finesse technique that's designed to display as little of your terminal tackle and line as possible. Using straight brad will be more visible to fish and could scare away line shy fish
I would not put any fishing equipment in my mouth. So much of it is really toxic, with lead and other brain damaging chemicals.
Truly an outstanding review of the Kuda 106. Thanks for posting 👍👍
Thabk you so much!
Hi i just have two question. Im planning to go on fishing for the first time. 1. If me and my wife is going to go fishing is it okay to have one license? (Im the only one who’s going to catch fish) shes going to watch me take a picture and chill. 2. Im residing in ontario. Do i need conservation license and outdoors card or just conservation license is enough?
1. If she isn't fishing, she doesn't need a license to simply be present. But if she picks up the fishing rod while the line is in the water at the same time a Conservation Officer comes around and sees it, you'll have a hard time convincing them that she wasn't fishing. My advice, just get a license for each of you. That way if she wants to give it a try, she can without worrying about it. To be clear, the fishing license is for more than just catching fish, it's your legal permission to participate in recreational fishing activities. 2. For most people in Ontario, your fishing license is tied to your outdoors card. So you can have an outdoors card without a fishing license, but you can't have a fishing license without an outdoors card. There are some very specific exceptions to that rules, so I would encourage you to have a thorough read through the general fishing regulations AND the rules for the specific Fishing Management Zone (FMZ) you'll be in.
Great series man, I hope it reaches a bigger crowd, simple but direct and plenty of info. Thanks
Thanks a bunch! I really appreciate the kind words!
I saw this somewhere else and forget where and also forgot how. I decided to look for it and found your vid.
Brother I love the video and series thus far.
Maybe this will solve my problem with the cheap Whopper ploppers i just started using. It's not that the tail gets caught up in grass it's the whole thing spins like a top and I had to figure out why my line was a twisted mess and needs to be redone. Thanks ill try
Second worst feeling. First is bathroom emergency!
Bro... thank you... from Serbia...
I live in on the canal. I am on Kilmarnock which has the oldest swing bridge in Canada at the Kilmarnock Locks. It is literally paradise here in the summer months.
I love these vids man ive been looking for fishing content of people closer by. i live 10 mins outside of Kingston. Take care bro maybe ill see you offshore fishing sometime lol
Thanks so much! And I'm sure we'll run into each other around town or on the water, if you do see me out and about, don't hesitate to say Hi!
@@jeffdicksyeah man, for sure that would be cool! 🎣
I had a hard time finding this video. You should put in the description how to "unhook a pike"
I'm sorry to hear you had trouble finding it! And thanks for the advice!! I will definitely update the description so it's a bit easier for people to find!
I feel you have the reason for an arch representation of fish wrong. The arch is created when the scan by sonar of a fish changes distance as the fish moves through the sonar cone. The sonar return in its raw state is processed, enhanced before it is shown on the screen. It is again processed if the operator selects to display fish icons. Humminbird usually has great mathematicians and software engineers, many times from Georgia Tech.
does the transducer face the front or back?
Thanks Jeff, nice review. What about mounting another removable skeg up front for windy days? I like it a lot for a throw and go. Looking forward to purchasing the 106.
