My grandmother actually introduced me to this series due to her love of puzzles. I love the prof layton games a lot. And surprisingly, so did my country, the Netherlands. NDS is one of my most beloved game consoles, with Professor Layton being one of my favourite games on the platform. So I really enjoyed finding out more about how the game was created. If there's one thing I thought was missing it's that the localized versions of the games did take away many of my favourite puzzles from the Japanese versions. Mostly puzzles with word solutions (where you write the answer in hiragana). It's only been about 7 years since I had gotten in to the Professor Layton games. I remember when the ds first came out. I had very little interest of getting one. Until about 7 years ago. When I had gotten a used red one off of Ebay. And I remember going to Target. To get a game for it. And I remember as I was looking at the ds games there. I remember that one ds game. I remember seeing a commercial for it a few years before. But I couldn't remember the name of the game. But I did remember the one character in the game wore a top hat. And when I saw the game call Professor Layton. I remember that this was the game I saw the commercial for. And ever since getting that game. I have a huge love for those games ever since. Mainly because they are puzzle games. And I just love puzzle games. Now I have every single Professor Layton related game there is for my ds and 3ds. And it was just last month I bought the Curious Village game for my iPad. I so hope the other ones comes to the iPad. And July of last year I bought Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy for my iPad. I also have it for my 3ds as well. I also have that Ace attorney and Layton 3ds game. I am so very glad this game series was made. And thanks for making a video about it.
THAT'S AMAZING !!! YOUR VOICE IS CLEAR AND UNDERSTANDABLE, I mean even for a frenchie like me ! I always loved Pr. Layton and most specifically Hino and Level5's work. Are you gonna make a "History of Inazuma Eleven" from the same studio ? I'd love to know more about its creation ! 💕 Anyway, +1 follower !
Ahaha, I'm really glad you enjoyed the video (and my voice!). I have quite a few other videos planned right now, but I'll definitely consider covering Inazuma Eleven at some point in the future.
Your first video and still one of my favorites. Professor Layton may not be one of the best series I've ever played but all the same, it's one I have an immense of fondness and nostalgia towards: the characters are endearing, the stories heartfelt, the soundtrack pleasantly rustic and of course, the puzzles are quite fun. I'm so grateful this series turned out as it did and came out when it did, and thanks so much for making a video on it. PL has both a fascinating and dare I say feel-good or heartwarming development history. :)
The entire reason I purchased the first professor layton game is that it was set up in store as a demo. You basically solved the first puzzle of the series finding the curious village. I really liked how it felt to try and solve something and so I gave it a shot. Never looked back because this series is one of the greatest and has seriously changed my way of looking at the world.
Boy, I'm glad the latest video by Mark Brown linked me to this! Such a great video. I loved the first games in the series, it's very cool to know the history behind it. Now I want to catch up with the remaining Professor Layton games.
Thank you! And yeah, if you have the free time then I'd really recommend playing games 2 and 3 to finish off the trilogy! The third game, in particular, is really great - one of my favourite games.
I first played the Curious village and then Unwound Future some time after that and I absolutely loved both. It's been so long yet the memories still seem so present, and now I really want to replay them :D
The only time television advertisement worked for me. I was like 11, when I saw the ad for the first game. I knew, I needed it! What an Artwork of a game! The packaging was just right. No worry
Thank you for providing sources in the description. Please don't remove this in the future. Also. How did you find that Official Nintendo Magazine's internet archived article? Really awesome pull, since the site is down.
No problem, I'll keep listing the sources in future! Most of my research for these videos consists of just googling "*name of game* developer interview" and digging deep into the search results, but if a source is archived then it most likely means I found it listed in the sources section of the game's Wikipedia page - I have archive.org on hand in case any of the links are broken. Wikipedia itself isn't very good for in depth research, but the lists of sources can be very useful!
Haha, thank you so much! The thing about the Layton games is that they're like if someone took a puzzle book and combined it with like an animated movie or something. So if you like puzzle book type puzzles and stories, you'll like the Layton games, but if you don't, you won't. I'd definitely recommend giving one a try if you have someone you can borrow it from - that way, if you don't like it then it doesn't really matter. Anyway, long ramble over ;)
@@ThomasGameDocs Totally! I have been looking for some new good DS games, there seem to be very few good ones that I know about besides pokemon and Animal Crossing, thanks for the recommendation!
In Praise of Shadows The puzzles in the earlier games lean toward simple riddles, while later games will more often present mechanics you have to fiddle with. The stories are pretty good if you like to get invested in stuff--in later games the stakes get really high
Hey man, I'm here from GMTK's latest vid, and I have to say, I really enjoyed this video. It was well written and I really like your approach to editing, it's entertaining and pretty unique! I love the textured and "home-made" - weird as that might sound to describe a youtube video, it's the best word I can think of to describe it, lol - feel to it all. Keep up the great work man, can't wait to see what you do next :D
i love these games so much :’) someone online introduced me to these and now we are best friends of 10 years because we bonded over PL so much. it’s very nostalgic for me.
Aww! Back in my 6th grade math class, my teacher paired all of us up for an assignment. I was paired with a boy I never knew well. Since we were both good at math and finished early, I decided to draw for him a puzzle I remembered from a Professor Layton game. He quickly solved it and told me that he played the games, too. We talked about them for a while, and we kept hanging out after that. Seven years later, we're still best friends!
Definitely planned! Phoenix Wright is probably my favourite game so I want to make sure I do it justice (for all). So yeah, it's planned but maybe for a little while in the future so I have time to get better at making these videos first.
I tend to only focus on a single game in a series, or occasionally two games, for these videos. The Ace Attorney video will almost certainly be just about the first game - that's because 1) the video will already be around 17 or 18 minutes covering just that game, and I really don't want it to end up any longer, and 2) lots more people will know about / have played the first game than any others, and I want the video to be accessible to as many people as possible! For what it's worth, I really love AAI2 and look forward to playing DGS 1 once the fan translation's done!
It's funny you should say that, as Ace Attorney was actually the reason that I created this channel: I found a load of information on the development of the game, and wanted to make it into a TH-cam video. I actually wrote a full script for the video as well, but it was _not_ very good, so I figured I'd start off with some other games first. Ace Attorney is really precious to me, so I want to make sure that when I make a video about it, it's a video I'm really proud of. Basically, it's coming, but not right now.
Professor Layton is the best thing that ever came in my life, and funnily enough was the first ever game I played and finish on the Nintendo DS, (not pokemon apparently) and it's been my favorite game of all time. It was given to me by a family member that, and I quote, "Found it in the shop and thought you might like it." And I did, I did very much, Curious Village and Pandora's Box were my favorite games on the DS, then I got Specter's Call and Unwound Future (that I cried at quite a lot). Fast forward 3 years later, I get a 3DS, and the first thing I ask for is Miracle Mask. Yes, it's my first game on the 3DS, and I absolutely love, then I got Azran Legacy which took me a while to finish mainly because I was not ready to end the whole series yet. Then I went on to watch Eternal Diva and play Layton Brothers I think was for the android, then I got Layton's Mystery Journey aka Katrielle Layton, and it was fantastiic! All in all, Professor Layton was an unforgettable journey, and I loved and enjoyed it all through out.
Oli_is_just_an_ign It was my first true video game I ever owned (since my parents accidentally bought lots of shovel ware) and the first game I finished. The series is still my favorite video game series ever and it’s characters are very near and dear to my heart. My parents bought me all the games and the movie which I still own and play today. Although, I’m always sad no one seems to know Layton in America anymore because he was my childhood hero growing up and such an important part of my life. I’m really hoping they dub the Katrielle Layton anime so we can bring Layton a little back to the West 😊
Great video! Professor Layton was my first proper experience with video games and I love what the series has become. As a person from the UK, I completely agree with the part about finding the American voice actor for Luke annoying. It's the same with Emmy in the prequel trilogy. It was definitely a good thing they changed it for the UK.
The first Layton was re-released on iOS and Android this year in a number of languages! The second game's already been announced too (at least in Japan)
Thank you! I'm just finishing my next video, which is about Super Mario Kart. Unless there's a sudden catastrophe, it should be up in a couple of days!

It’s so nice (and kind of surprising) to see such a well made informative video on a series by Level-5! Would you ever consider doing a video like this on any of their other series (such as Inazuma Eleven or Danball Senki)?
Hmm, for now I'm mainly sticking to games I've personally played / know of, but I'll certainly look at to them at some point in the future. My main problem at the moment is having too many ideas and not enough time to actually make them, so I have a pretty huge backlog!
I played these as a kid, and got back into them last year. It's a game series that, even when I finish, will never leave my mind. It's not one of those ones where you finish it and it's like "oh, okay. that's over". It's more like "i'm gonna do that again".
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it! At least with a DS, you can play my personal favourite, lost/unwound future. I hope you get to play the 3ds games at some point, though!
Amazing video, I didn't know that the CEO of Level 5 used to write Akira Tago books! This video took some effort I guess, it deserves way more views! Keep up the great work, you have a new sub :D
5:58 Australia received BOTH English versions of the adaptions, so while my copy of 'The Curious Village' was the UK dub, when i bought 'The Last Spectre' it was the US dub.
My mom gave me the first Layton for christmas. I expected it to be nothing good, cause it was just some random thing my mom picked without knowing anything about games - boy was I wrong. I played all the titles in the series, and so did my mom - who had never touched a game console before. My favorite is the Unwound Future.
I started playing Professor Layton way after the DS boom. I'm pretty glad. I don't think I would have appreciated it at the time but I love it now! I wish they would make another series like this.
I grew up playing the professor layton games. They were my favourite things to play on the DS and I fondly remember replaying the lost future from the final save point to rewatch the ending. Damn, those games were great It's a shame only four of them still supported play on the original DS and instead began moving to the newer ones
I had no idea that Lani Minella was Luke's US voice actor! While I live in the UK and play the European versions of the games, I was aware of Luke's different voice in America because I had the American version of the second game on one of those multi game cards. After discovering Lani's voice in games such as Bendy and the Ink Machine, and also Showdown Bandit (RIP), I was very surprised to learn that she was Luke in the US! Now that I think about Luke's US voice and the one line that Showdown Bandit said, I can hear the similarities!

What about people who have only played some of the games?

And July of last year I bought Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy for my iPad. I also have it for my 3ds as well. I also have that Ace attorney and Layton 3ds game. I am so very glad this game series was made. And thanks for making a video about it.
Thanks for your comment, that was really interesting to read! Glad you enjoyed the video, too!
You also forgot mystery room but that has.. Questionable canonicity
Anyway, +1 follower !
Ahaha, I'm really glad you enjoyed the video (and my voice!). I have quite a few other videos planned right now, but I'll definitely consider covering Inazuma Eleven at some point in the future.
Professor Layton switch would be a godsend
People who love this series, most definitely also love Ace Attourney Phoenix Wright. Something about these 2 games is just amazing.
No worry
Waited for a video like this for so long! The Layton games are one of my all time faves. Thank you!
Aw, thank you so much! That's so kind! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Ah new Layton content! This was my favorite game series growing up, thanks for making this!
Ah, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Very nice video! Excited to check out more.
Thanks!
Professor Layton is so dear to my heart, one of my first video games. Thank you for this video!
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Good video! Love your voice man, looking forward to the next one! I haven't played this game before but I might have to look into it now.
Thank you so much! I'm really going for that papery / home-made look so I'm glad you like it!
i love these games so much :’) someone online introduced me to these and now we are best friends of 10 years because we bonded over PL so much. it’s very nostalgic for me.
This got in my recommended and as someone who played the whole main series, I really enjoyed watching your video. Keep on going!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the Layton games, and my video too!
The art style in the Professor Layton reminded me so much of the works of a French animator named Sylvain Chomet.
Thank you for making this. The professor Layton games were my favorite when I was a child. And I still love these games dearly even after 11 years.
Thanks for watching it! I'm glad you liked the video!
What an absolute beautiful video to watch before we start 2019. Thank you! ♥️
Thanks! I hope you have a great 2019!
I'm feeling such nostalgia from this. I loved these games :D
Rest in peace Akira Tago 🙏 You made us all happy with your puzzles. 💓
How about Phoenix Wright next? :)
Definitely planned! Phoenix Wright is probably my favourite game so I want to make sure I do it justice (for all). So yeah, it's planned but maybe for a little while in the future so I have time to get better at making these videos first.
@@ThomasGameDocs maybe mention AAI2 and DGS 1 and 2?
I tend to only focus on a single game in a series, or occasionally two games, for these videos. The Ace Attorney video will almost certainly be just about the first game - that's because 1) the video will already be around 17 or 18 minutes covering just that game, and I really don't want it to end up any longer, and 2) lots more people will know about / have played the first game than any others, and I want the video to be accessible to as many people as possible! For what it's worth, I really love AAI2 and look forward to playing DGS 1 once the fan translation's done!
I remember having two professor Layton games
The curious Village and Unwound future I think.
Please do "How Ace Attorney was Created" next.
I really enjoyed this video! Professor Layton is my favorite game series, but I didn't know the whole story behind it. Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Great video! Professor Layton was my first proper experience with video games and I love what the series has become. As a person from the UK, I completely agree with the part about finding the American voice actor for Luke annoying. It's the same with Emmy in the prequel trilogy. It was definitely a good thing they changed it for the UK.
Btw, if you couldn't tell, my profile picture is a little 8-bit design of the Professor, based off of the mario jumping animation.
Oh wow, I really love that profile pic! Also, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for your comment!
The first Layton was re-released on iOS and Android this year in a number of languages!
The second game's already been announced too (at least in Japan)
Ooh, I knew they did the first game but I didn't know they were doing the second one too! Crossed fingers it comes out in English too!
Sir this video was excellent, I adore this series and have not seen it spoken about in such a wonderful video like this before. Thank you!
Thank _you_ !
Wow your editing and style are very fresh and enthralling. I really like this video and i'm going to share it with all my friends!
Oh wow, thank you so much!
@@ThomasGameDocs you're welcome.
This was a great video. I love the Layton series and this was a great video to find out how it was made. I hope you do this for other games too.
Thank you! I'm just finishing my next video, which is about Super Mario Kart. Unless there's a sudden catastrophe, it should be up in a couple of days!
@@ThomasGameDocs Cool. I'm looking forward to it.
Oh, thats why Luke voice was different. I didnt find out there were different voice actors until i saw the sound test in the game and was reminded when i saw the movie.
Great selection of music
Minimalist but clear aesthetic
Simple but efficient way of explaining things
Man, u truly deserve more subs, ur channel is a gem!
This is interesting and informative! I’m glad I found it.
Thanks! That's really kind!
Real nice stuff you made here!
Thanks!
I grew up with this game series and now I know how its development took place!! Thank you so much for this video ♡♡
Just found your channel, and LOVE your laidback style and well-made videos! You've got a new subscriber right here.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that!
Professor Layton is one of my favorite game franchises if not my favorite of all time
That is a beautiful arrangement of Layton's theme! I am playing a different one at the moment myself but I much prefer yours🎐
Haha, thanks! I only played a small part of it though, so I kinda cheated ;)
ugh I love Professor Layton so much!!! this video is really good!
Thanks, glad you liked the video!
Long live, Thomas game docs you’re a very efficient public speaker and TH-cam commentator with your narration and dialogue language.
1 min in, excellent quality, less than 1000 Subs? You have just earned a sub, man.
Thanks! I really appreciate that!
I played these as a kid, and got back into them last year. It's a game series that, even when I finish, will never leave my mind. It's not one of those ones where you finish it and it's like "oh, okay. that's over". It's more like "i'm gonna do that again".
I love this series, the mechanics, story, artwork, even the music.
Great vid! I love Professor Layton even though I couldn't get a 3DS to play the rest, considering getting one just for the remaining games!
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it! At least with a DS, you can play my personal favourite, lost/unwound future. I hope you get to play the 3ds games at some point, though!
AAAAHHHHHHH! THANK YOU SO MUCH! I LOVE IT!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing video, I didn't know that the CEO of Level 5 used to write Akira Tago books!
This video took some effort I guess, it deserves way more views! Keep up the great work, you have a new sub :D
Thanks!
I love Professor Layton!!! Thank you for the information. I didn’t know most of this. I also love your voice.
Thanks!
This is brilliant! I just subscribed, TH-cam finally got my recommendations right.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it! (and that TH-cam recommended it to you, haha)
layton is my all time favorite! thank you!
Glad you enjoyed the video!
in Europe, they didn't just add subtitles in other languages but they dubbed it.
@Fede Poyo the first game too! the italian one, at least
in realtà il primo gioco non è mai stato doppiato in italiano, tutti gli altri si
Neat series! Brand new channel? I’m in!
Thanks!
your voice is so soothing and the video was really interesting and well researched, thank you for making it! (I'm sad I only just found this now haha)
Holy shit, I never really cared for this series before, but now I am interested. Good job.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video!
5:58 Australia received BOTH English versions of the adaptions, so while my copy of 'The Curious Village' was the UK dub, when i bought 'The Last Spectre' it was the US dub.
Your voice is so impossibly smooth, I think I just hit puberty. I--I mean, this video reminded me of a puzzle!
Ahaha, uh, thanks!
This was an amazing video about an amazing game series. Keep it up!!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Replaying the games now and they're still absolutely wonderful
My mom gave me the first Layton for christmas. I expected it to be nothing good, cause it was just some random thing my mom picked without knowing anything about games - boy was I wrong. I played all the titles in the series, and so did my mom - who had never touched a game console before. My favorite is the Unwound Future.
I started playing Professor Layton way after the DS boom. I'm pretty glad. I don't think I would have appreciated it at the time but I love it now! I wish they would make another series like this.
This was really interesting! I’ll definitely make sure to check out the rest of your videos :)
Thanks! Hope you like them!
I grew up playing the professor layton games. They were my favourite things to play on the DS and I fondly remember replaying the lost future from the final save point to rewatch the ending. Damn, those games were great
It's a shame only four of them still supported play on the original DS and instead began moving to the newer ones
great video my good man! i really enjoyed it.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!
European Luke sounds so much better holy shit
I saw Layton vs. Phoenix Wright before other Layton games.
Hearing American Luke was like feeling a huge amount of whiplash, it sounded a lot worse.
@@kirby1781 I had the exact opposite experience, I hated his UK voice. Sounded too girly and annoying
I always wondered why Luke's voice seemed different in the prequels/eternal diva, great video!
Thanks!
Very good video! With nearly 1000 subscribers in a month and videos of this quality, you are going to be very successful :)
Thank you so much! (crossed fingers!)
I love your style!
Thanks!
I remember always going to my grandad asking if he could help me with some of the puzzles. Good times.
Wow you did the piano playing yourself? It's gorgeous!
(I had never noticed the switch in Luke btw, untill you played them side by side! )
Why am I crying. I am so emotionally attached to this game series
I as someone who has never played heard of this watched the whole thing. I wish I did know of this I loved puzzle games when I was younger.
Great video, I didn't know about this so far
It's a very good video, I love Professor Layton series.
